This compliment reveals more than you might think. When a potential buyer views a home, they spend crucial moments standing outside the entrance. As they wait for their real estate agent to open a lock- box and unlock the door, it’s a perfect opportunity to notice the condition of the door and trim, walkway and porch. This first impression can’t be over- estimated, because it’s a pre- view of the maintenance of the entire home. All of these questions can be useful in evaluating how visitors (and potential buyers) might react to your home: When considering the door, does a buyer see visible weathering or damage to the finish, handle, or lockset? Any warping, flaking, or signs of water penetration on the door or trim? Are the colors and metallic accents coordi- nated and reflective of the current style? Does the door seem strong and sturdy, giv- ing the buyer a sense of safe- ty and security should this become their own home? Is the front walkway level, clean, and free of weeds? Are plants attractive, healthy and in scale? Plants and trees should be trimmed away from contact with the home. Looking at the porch, are the steps even, and masonry and railings in good repair? It’s a great idea to powerwash to remove cobwebs, stains, and dirt. A new light fixture is a nice final touch. Don’t hesitate to ask neigh- bors, friends, or your real estate agent to refer profes- sional contractors who can help you make improvements for your own enjoyment and/or prior to listing your home for sale. A new, high-quality, and sparkling entrance sets the tone for the showing to come. A seller who makes an invest- ment in their home’s entry sig- nals that the entire property is properly turned-out and ready for a new owner. A Door Story By: Johanna Wiseman home & design PAGE 28
