Metropolitan Window Fashions Purchases Reupholstery & Restoration
Metropolitan Window Fashions recently completed the purchase of Reupholstery & Restoration (“R&R”), located in the historic Madison Train Station at 2 Central Avenue in Madison. R&R was in business for 50 years before the owner, Johnny Thomas, passed away in 2023. Johnny’s daughter reached out to Bruce Heyman, owner of Metropolitan to take care of R&R customers. You can watch videos of the transition on Metropolitan Window Fashion’s Facebook page – posts on January 20th and February 27th – for the whole story.
Metropolitan is NJ’s largest window fashions retailer featuring custom draperies, motorized shades, Hunter Douglas blinds & shutters, fabric, wallpaper, and reupholstery. Metropolitan took over R&R jobs in progress and completed them with 100% customer satisfaction. The space in Madison was not ideal, so with a location in Livingston, the decision was made to close the Madison shop.
When asked about the decision to close that location, Heyman replied, “Madison is a great town and we are delighted to join the local chamber of commerce, but the space at 2 Central is really best suited for a warehouse, not a design center. We have informed all the R&R customers of our move and hope they visit us at our Livingston store or one of our other four locations.”
Custom reupholstery is a wise investment and a sustainable practice. It is hard to find quality furniture these days. If you have a quality or heirloom piece of furniture, the reupholstery process will make your furniture ‘like-new’. Metropolitan will strip down your furniture to the frame and build it back up with new foam and beautiful new fabric of your choice. Each of Metropolitan’s five locations has over 50,000 fabrics to choose from. That may sound intimidating, but their design team will narrow your choices to make it easier for you. Simply take a picture of your furniture and send an email to shop@windowfashions.com to receive a quote.
Metropolitan has been in the reupholstery business for 90 years. Heyman is the third-generation owner of a company started by his grandfather in Plainfield as Chain Decorators and moved to North Plainfield in the 1960s by his father who renamed it Fabricland.
Heyman’s comment about the name changes was insightful stating, “Staying in business for 90 years means adapting to the times. My grandfather was in the drapery and upholstery business and named his company according to his ambition to open multiple stores – which he did with locations in Plainfield, Westfield, and Somerville. My father jumped on the dress fabric boom times of the 1960s and renamed the store Fabricland to emphasize our great fabric selection. In my tenure, we have become the largest window fashions retailer in the area – and our name reflects that status.”
Metropolitan Window Fashions offers a FREE in-home decorating service and has five beautiful showrooms in Green Brook, Paramus, Livingston, Lebanon, and Branchville. This year, they are celebrating their 90th anniversary (1934-2024). They have received many industry and retail awards including the NJ Family Business of the Year and the D&WC National Retailer of the Year.
