Remembering Those Lost, Celebrating Survivors; Candlelight Vigil Marks Domestic Violence Awareness Month
Safe + Sound Somerset, a non-profit organization exclusively dedicated to serving those whose lives have been impacted by domestic abuse, will mark Domestic Violence Awareness Month in October with its 28th annual Candlelight Vigil on Thursday, October 6, 2016.
The candlelight vigil will be held at 7 p.m. at North Plainfield Community Center, 614 Greenbrook Rd, North Plainfield. A Safe+Sound Somerset client will share her courageous and inspiring story; community leaders will talk about the ripple effect of domestic abuse on family and friends; our neighborhoods; and the workplace.
To bear silent witness to the tragic consequences of domestic violence in our communities, we will walk through a display of life-size silhouettes representing the 36 individuals who have been murdered in domestic abuse-related incidents in Somerset County since 1976.
October is National Domestic Violence Awareness Month, a time to raise awareness about domestic abuse to break the cycle of abuse and let survivors be heard. Every nine seconds a woman is abused in the United States; in Somerset County alone, at any given moment, there are 42,000 individuals suffering in domestic abuse relationships. You can be the agent of change in our community by standing up and saying no more to break the cycle of violence. For more than 35 years, Safe + Sound Somerset has been providing comprehensive domestic violence services including a 24-hour call or text hotline, emergency shelter, transitional housing, crisis intervention, supportive counseling, legal advocacy and domestic violence response teams. Join the staff and volunteers of Safe+Sound Somerset at the Candlelight Vigil to remember those who have lost their lives and celebrate those who have overcome many obstacles to proudly proclaim “I am a survivor.”
