Founded in 1960, Midland is a not-for-profit 501 (c) (3) organization comprised of The Midland School, Midland Adult Services, and The Midland Foundation. Midland’s mission is to promote personal achievement and foster independence for children and adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities by providing a range of innovative programs.
Located in North Branch, The Midland School is a New Jersey Department of Education approved private special education school, offering a comprehensive special education program dedicated to the individual, social, emotional, academic, and career needs of children with intellectual and developmental disabilities (I/DD). The school serves students ages 3 through 21 from across New Jersey. Midland also provides speech and occupational therapy, counseling, and social skills instruction. Students may participate in a variety of social and recreational activities such as Boy and Girl Scouts, Student Council, dances, and the prom. The school’s school-to-work transition program helps prepare Midland students for adult life and the world of work. Continuing social and recreational activities are available for graduates through an active Alumni Association.

Midland teachers provide individualized education through an exceptional staff-to-student ratio. Each classroom is staffed with a teacher and paraprofessional specially trained to work with students with intellectual and physical disabilities. Midland’s highly trained staff provides individualized education and related services and supports to students with communication needs, behavioral challenges, and complex medical conditions. Students may elect to continue their education during the summer in Midland’s Extended School Year program.
Midland Adult Services (MAS) provides community residential living, community and life skills training, job training and placement, as well as day and social/recreational experiences to support and enrich the lives of adults, ages twenty-one and older with I/DD. The program is available to Midland graduates and individuals who have graduated from other schools.
Midland promotes personal choice, self-advocacy, full community inclusion, and self-determination to support each participant’s goals. As such, individuals can participate in any or all of MAS programs, which include Midland’s Employment Program, Day Habilitation and Community Residential programs.
MAS Employment provides job training, employment, and placement services for adults with I/DD on campus and at area businesses.
Midland Explores is an activity and community day habilitation program that promotes choice, enrichment, and personal development for adults with I/DD. Current course offerings include art, yoga, music, daily life skills, and social skills.
Midland Community Residential program provides housing in nine (9) group homes and three (3) supervised apartments for individuals with I/DD in Somerset county.
The Midland Foundation raises funds for The Midland School and Midland Adult Services. Annual fundraising events include: Move for Midland Sponsored by PVH Corp; The Midland Golf Classic, Midland Goes to the Movies with PNC.
