There is a reason phrases like “What a headache” and “Such a pain in the neck” exist – because they’re relatable! We all experience headaches and neck pain to some extent or another, but no one has a significant solution. Sure, we can throw medications at many headaches with some degree of success. There are even those in the third standard deviation who need surgery. But what about the other ninety percent or more of the population that just accepts ongoing pain and discomfort as part of life on this earth? We can all relate.
Enter NUCCA care, a chiropractic subspecialty that is an acronym for “National Upper Cervical Chiropractic Association.” Providers trained in NUCCA, also known as “NUCCA Doctors” have traditional Chiropractic training, but the subspecialty bears little resemblance to traditional Chiropractic care. One major difference is that the NUCCA technique does not involve any of the twisting, cracking, or popping of someone’s neck or back that often comes to mind when you envision traditional Chiropractic care. Rather, every NUCCA patient undergoes pre- and post-treatment x-rays and biomechanical assessment of their head and neck. This assessment measures the patient’s specific misalignment and confirms the treatment necessary to realign the bones supporting the skull as intended. It’s not easy work, but it’s also not guesswork.
There is a saying in the world of neurosurgery (where I’m from) that operating on the brain and spine is “a game of millimeters, not inches.” Similarly, moving the bones in your neck a couple of millimeters in the right direction can yield profound results. And what NUCCA Doctors have carefully studied and realized over the years is how to do away with the back cracks and gently move the bones that matter – the highly mobile ones that balance the weight of your head on top of the rest of your spine.
NUCCA sounds pretty cool, huh? It’s not a fix-all solution, but there are many conditions that patients have found significant relief from after being under a NUCCA Doctor’s care:
- Post-Concussion Syndrome
- Headaches & Migraine
- Neck & Back Pain
- Dysautonomia & POTS
- Trigeminal Neuralgia
- Chiari Malformations
- Tinnitus, Stuttering, Brain Fog
- Fibromyalgia
- Joint Pain
- Sciatica & Disc Herniations
- Numbness and/or tingling
- TMJD (Jaw pain or clicking)
By no means is that list comprehensive or mutually exclusive in terms of treatment options. Just as a tradesman doesn’t show up to a job with one tool in his toolbox, you shouldn’t be limited to a single means of finding relief from the symptoms that steal your quality of life. That being said, we do have a knack for helping patients who have been through the gamut with every specialty under the sun before finding us.
