Detsy Hallock was born in Maturin, Venezuela in 1970, the youngest of four sisters to a school teacher mother and a farmer father.
She started painting for the first time in 2004, at the age of 34, after leaving Venezuela and moving to Cairo, Egypt. Although she had never previously painted, she felt a calling to paint after exposure to Egypt’s unique mosaic of desert scenes and exotic people. In Cairo alone Detsy encountered 5000 year old pyramids, ancient bustling markets and people living under customs dating back thousands of years. Through painting she was able to successfully capture the rugged individualism of Bedouins and the influence of the Nile on the lives of everyday Egyptians.
Detsy received painting and drawing instruction from Mansour Ahmed, one of Egypt’s premiere portrait painters, from 2004-2009. After moving to the United States in 2009, she honed her skills through painting classes in Summit, NJ, Washington, DC and Bedminster, NJ. She successfully exhibited her work in Cairo, Egypt in 2009, Arlington Arts Gallery in Arlington, VA in 2010/11, and The Center for Contemporary Art in Bedminster, NJ last August. Detsy was selected via juried competition to
exhibit at the Mountain Art Show in Bernardsville and the St. John on the Mountain Small Treasure show in October 2013. This past December she was again selected via juried competition to exhibit at the Metro Show in Newark, NJ.
