A Pure Plein Air Artist. I received my first paint set when I was 8 years old, and have been painting ever since. In later years, I chose to study Architecture, where I received my formal training in art. My passion is for pure Plein air art and I’ve spent most of my life living in and enjoying the beauty of the Northeast. I am proud to be a Finnish American, born in New York City in 1961, and have been married to my wife Allison for over 20 years. Today we live in dual residences in both Bedminster and Millville, NJ.
Allison and I share a love of nature. During frequent hikes and canoe trips we have seen some breathtaking landscapes. This has inspired me to spend the past ten years specializing in painting landscapes in an impressionist style as a pure plein air artist. Painting on location has many challenges, which also present opportunities. Plein air is unique because each scene is impacted by weather conditions, the movement of clouds, velocity and direction of the wind, time of the year, and the angle of the sun. These shifting components combine to create the atmosphere of a scene and allow the artist to experience all the variations that can be painted. I have found there are beautiful scenes throughout the day and under various conditions.
For me, the Plein air artist’s goal is to discover the nuances and convey the feeling of the space.
