THE BERNARDS-RIDGE CONNECTION PAGE 10 APRIL/MAY 2022 theconnectionsnj.com Living with an animal is special. You form a special bond with them, but also get to know their unique behaviors, routines, and even their quirks. When owners express concern that their pets are not acting themselves, this is always something that I take seriously. Unfortunately, it can take an advanced disease or an awful lot of discomfort for a happy-go-lucky dog to stop eating his favorite treat, playing with a favorite toy, or wagging his tail. And cats can be even more stoic. By the time owners notice abnormalities, some pets can be in the advanced stages of a disease. It’s always devastating when pets become ill, but it’s even more heart-breaking knowing that if we had just detected the disease sooner we might have been able to treat it more effectively. This is why veterinary exams should not be reserved only for sick pets. A veterinary physical exam is truly nose-to-tail. It begins with my own observations of my patient – their body language, how they move and also utilize my senses to smell, feel, and listen to them. Patients who have abdominal pain or back pain stand and move in characteristic ways to prevent themselves from exacerbating their pain. A patient’s breath may exude an odor to alert me of an infection in the mouth, but there is also a characteristic breath smell of kidney failure and another for undiagnosed or unregulated diabetics due to the production of ketones (molecules produced when insulin levels are low). Even from across the room, different breathing sounds can be heard associated with problems of the upper airway (nose, mouth, windpipe) and problems that affect the lungs. With a stethoscope, other subtleties can be heard including abnormal heart rhythms, heart murmurs which may suggest the presence of a leaky heart valve or other heart diseases, and also the rumblings of the intestinal tract which may suggest whether food is moving through properly or not. During the exam, instruments are used to look within the eyes and ears to detect other abnormalities. Palpation, the process by which veterinarians methodically feel our patients, allows us to detect lymph node enlargement, tumors in and under the skin as well as within the abdomen and rectum, but also pain, joint swelling, and abnormal movement of a joint that might suggest an injury. Ideally, the physical examination is normal and when performed routinely with bloodwork to test organ function, provides me with some comfort that all is well. When the physical examination is not normal, it may provide a diagnosis but it doesn’t allow me to determine the most appropriate tests to perform next. Thorough physical examination by a veterinarian is recommended yearly for all pets. Because pets age much more quickly than we do, twice yearly exams are recommended for those over eight years of age. Routine veterinary visits allow for collaboration with pet parents to discuss their observations and to determine the best preventative care plan for each individual pet. Early detection of disease allows us the opportunity to treat and cure, or in other cases to at least slow the progression of chronic disease, so that pets can live longer, healthier, and happier lives. And that’s what matters most. VETERINARY EXAMS: WHY THEY MATTER By Dr. Andrea S. Freeman, VMD, MS Because pets age much more quickly than we do, twice yearly exams are recommended for those over eight years of age. Palpation, the process by which veterinarians methodically feel our patients, allows us to detect lymph node enlargement, tumors in and under the skin as well as within the abdomen and rectum, but also pain, joint swelling, and abnormal movement of a joint that might suggest an injury. theconnectionsnj.com HEALTH & WELLNESS PAGE 19 The Covid-19 pandemic has wreaked havoc throughout our families, communities, and has impacted our health, safety, and well-being for the past two years. No one has been immune from this public health crisis. We have grieved the loss of loved ones and have felt the impact of Covid-19 in all aspects of our mental and physical health. We have had to adapt to a complete overhaul of our jobs and our schools. Quarantine and isolation have resulted in emotional distress, vulnerability and an increased risk for new physical and psychiatric conditions as well as an exacerbation of existing conditions. The pandemic has also led to unhealthy behaviors for many people, including increased substance use and exposure to domestic violence. We have seen a rampant increase in emotional effects from the pandemic, including depression, anxiety, anger, fear, confusion, insecurity and insomnia. Our mental health has been thrust into the spotlight and many people are seeking psychosocial support and treatment for the first time in their lives. At Psychiatric & Behavioral Health Solutions, we want you to know that you are not alone in your struggles. We are here to support you throughout this extraordinary time. Our caring team includes a psychiatrist, a behavioral health nurse practitioner, and a psychotherapist with over 60 years of collective experience in practice. While we each bring our unique experiences to the practice, we all believe in the importance of providing holistic, comprehensive care in a safe and nurturing environment. We pride ourselves on providing non-judgmental, compassionate care and will take the time to get to know you as a person and your unique needs and strengths, and not just individual symptoms of a disorder. Our personalized therapeutic approach ensures that you are comfortable with the treatment plan and are working towards your individual goals. We offer evaluation and management of psychiatric conditions for children, adolescents, adults and elders, both in person and via telehealth. We offer a variety of treatment options including lifestyle changes, medications, individual and group therapy, including solution focused, cognitive behavioral and psychodynamic therapy. theconnectionsnj.com HEALTH & WELLNESS PAGE 23 By Dr. Vince Sferra, Natural Medicine & Rehabilitation Allergy seasons have many suffering from a stuffy, runny, or congested nose, itchy and watery eyes, scratchy throat, sneezing, sniffling, coughing, and overall fatigue. If you are looking for non-pharmacological treatment options to help relieve your allergies without feeling drowsy, dizzy, or having an impaired motor function, and dry mouth, it’s time to explore alternatives to conventional allergy medications. Seasonal allergies develop when the immune system overreacts to allergens in the environment. When the immune system overreacts, it, along with our nervous system, releases histamines and other chemicals causing these allergy symptoms. Spinal misalignments and spinal joint stiffness along with irritated nerves around the spine can reduce neurological function, impede the effectiveness of our immune system, and cause an increase in allergy symptoms. Chiropractic care reduces the stress on the spine and nervous system which can help the nerves and as a result, the immune system, function more effectively. You may already know which triggers from the environment make your symptoms worse, but you may also have a genetic predisposition to experiencing allergy-like symptoms. Therefore, a neurological exam by a functional medicine doctor will help them investigate what triggers and causes your symptoms in order to develop an individual treatment plan specific to your needs. Physical exercise can get your blood pumping and enable you to move allergens through the bloodstream quickly. Stagnant allergens can settle in the sinuses and cause inflammation. Physical therapy treatment can open those sinuses for better drainage which means less pressure in your face, fewer headaches, and the ability to breathe through your nose again. Learning exercises to strengthen your diaphragm muscles may also help you breathe better. Diaphragmatic breathing not only strengthens your diaphragm but is also a great stress-reduction technique. Biofeedback therapy can be used to manage your rate and method of breathing and your body’s response to stress. Stress can wreak havoc on the immune system making your allergies even worse. Learning ways to detox your body will also help to speed up the elimination of allergens through the kidneys and skin. The body has its own natural daily cleansing process to eliminate or filter out allergens and toxins through the use of the liver, lungs, kidneys, colon, intestines, and skin. Certain food can help reduce allergy symptoms, by reducing inflammation and boosting your immune system. Supplements and probiotics may need to be added to complement a healthy diet to further help support the immune system during allergy season. By having good nutrition and learning how to detox our homes for a healthy living environment thereby exposing ourselves to the least amount of environmental toxins, we will enable our body to do its detoxing job well! Acupuncture is another non-pharmacological treatment option that addresses the underlying imbalances within the body causing allergic reactions. Acupuncture supports the nervous and immune systems, can help decrease inflammation, and increases blood flow to help detoxify and eliminate allergens in the body. If you are seeking to alleviate seasonal allergy symptoms, there are many drug-free options to help you manage your symptoms. New Jersey’s Premier Outdoor and Indoor Gourmet Catering Company Working in a deli to pay his way through college, Kevin Smith, the owner of The American BBQ Company discovered his love of the food service industry. After graduating with a degree in Economics from Rutgers University, and after a brief stint in sales, he returned to his first love. In an attempt to exploit the underserved niche of outdoor catering, The American BBQ Company was born. Since 1996, The American BBQ Company has specialized in gourmet catering events of all types and all sizes. A highlight of the early years was the town wide Millennium Celebration in Kevin’s hometown of Madison, where over 3,000 happy guests were served. American BBQ prides itself on using only the finest products and presenting an attractive buffet. Unlike many companies, American BBQ utilizes actual chafing dishes, not inexpensive wire racks. The cold foods are presented on ice for freshness and the buffet is shaded by its own tent. The genuine linen tablecloths complete this attractive display. The friendly, attentive staff brings everything needed to cook and serve, including their own grill. A variety of menus are available or you can feel free to customize your own. The packages run the gamut from traditional backyard menus like The American BBQ Package featuring juicy BBQ chicken, sweet Italian sausage and peppers, and the fan favorite St. Louis style ribs to the upscale Custom Affair featuring filet mignon, grilled swordfish, grilled jumbo shrimp, and Caribbean jerk chicken breast. An array of themed events are available such as The Texan, featuring BBQ beef brisket and pulled pork; The Southern, featuring fried chicken, brisket, corn bread, and sides such as biscuits and gravy, Southern Style potato salad, and collard greens. You may wish to consider the Pig Roast Package, The American Clam Bake, the Latin American BBQ, or the Oktoberfest Package or so many more! Special menus for St. Patrick’s Day, Christmas, Superbowl etc. are also available. All of the packages come with your choice of fresh salads and sides. You can round out your event by adding beverages, a variety of tantalizing appetizers and wonderful desserts. As if that were not enough, The American BBQ Company offers a full menu of “traditional” catering for your year-round enjoyment. Choose from a variety of chicken, beef and pork dishes along with pastas, salads and more! A visit to the website at americanbbqco.com will leave your mouth watering. theconnectionsnj.com EAT, DRINK & CELEBRATE PAGE 29 Luxury cruising began in the nineteenth century, primarily as a means of transportation. Those grand luxury liners were fashioned to appeal to the upper classes offering all the lavish amenities and accommodations expected by the aristocracy and industrialists of that bygone era. Yet they also carried second and thirdclass passengers as well as the steerage class usually carrying immigrants to the new world. But today’s luxury cruise ships are usually smaller and cater to the savvy traveler. The crew to guest ratios, stateroom amenities, choices of the finest wines and cuisine, distinguish them as modern-day first-class vacations. In the next four issues, I will highlight the vast choices available in this luxury class. In future issues, I will highlight Explorer Class cruises, offering exotic locations such as the Galapagos, the Arctic, the Antarctic, just to mention a few. Then onto Yachting, from a charter of a vessel for a private, custom-made adventure, to your choices of reserving a stateroom on a superyacht with a planned itinerary and specific departure dates. Finally, I will highlight the fastest growing sector of this market, the river cruises. So, let’s begin with what is usually the first foray into the luxury cruise market. The cruise lines we recommend are Azamara, Silver Seas, Seabourn, Oceania, and Regent Seven Seas Cruises and Cunard. All of which offer a myriad of choices and itineraries, as well as the length of the cruise. From the standard seven-day cruise to a world cruise, or any portion thereof, your choices are unlimited. Regent Seven Seas Cruises offers what I feel is the most comprehensive inclusions on the seas. These include free and unlimited shore excursions, unlimited beverages, including fine wines and spirits, specialty restaurants, unlimited Wi-Fi, air travel, business class in certain categories of stateroom booked, round trip airport to cruise transfers, gratuities, and even laundry services! As well as pre and post-cruise hotel accommodations, depending on the category chosen. Regent is the gourmand’s choice - All to make this a truly luxurious vacation!! Oceania Cruises is my choice for those interested in a full immersion foodie experience. They are the first line to introduce cooking classes onboard. And as an optional excursion, the Chef will accompany the guests to the markets of the intended port, where you will go shopping at local markets, farms, and vineyards, to assemble the ingredients which you will later prepare yourself for the dinner that night. The French have an expression for this, Cuisine du Terroir. Experiencing the flavors of a specific place. Azamara with its smaller ships able to port at more unusual locations, make this line perfect for those looking for a destination-intensive itinerary. But a truly luxury experience includes an expert to assist you to plan your voyage. Helping you navigate which itinerary or cruise line to make your vacation exactly what you are looking for is only the beginning. Managing all the moving parts by a professional experienced travel consultant can greatly add to a more pleasant experience like: entry requirements for foreign countries, such as visas or health and vaccine documentation; what kind and how much insurance you need; assistance in selecting the right shore excursions for each port, and the list goes on and on. Our highly motivated and knowledgeable travel consultants are here to help. So give us a call, we would love to hear from you. We can be reached at 908-234-2500 or stop by our office located at 115 Morristown Road in Bernardsville.
