The Connections Bernards Ridge Edition April/May 2022

theconnectionsnj.com HOME & DESIGN PAGE 62 Metropolitan Window Fashions, a 3rd Generation family business, is delighted to announce the opening of two new stores in 2022. Both were established businesses whose owners coincidentally decided to retire this year. Metropolitan purchased Window Expressions in Lebanon on January 1st and The Fabric Yard at 55 South Maple Avenue in Basking Ridge on February 1st. When Bruce Heyman, the owner of Metropolitan, was approached by the owners of the Fabric Yard, his initial reaction was that it was too close to his flagship store, Metropolitan Window Fashions at Fabricland in Green Brook. “We already have many customers in Basking Ridge, but I know how customers like to shop in their own downtown. I respect people who want to patronage local stores. After looking at the store closely and their selection of high-end fabrics, I thought it would be a nice addition to our other stores. We will be working on adding new displays in the near future.” With their stores in Green Brook, Paramus, Livingston and now Lebanon and Basking Ridge, Metropolitan is NJ’s largest independent retailer of custom window fashions. Heyman, whose grandfather started the business in Plainfield in 1934, commented on the new location. “Even though we offer a free shop-at-home service, many customers prefer to visit our showrooms to see full-size displays. All of the existing staff at The Fabric Yard is staying with the company. The offerings will remain the same, with an emphasis on custom draperies, reupholstery, blinds, shutters and motorized shades from Hunter Douglas”. Metropolitan’s store in Green Brook is only nine miles away and has a large selection of in-stock curtains and drapery hardware along with thousands of in-stock fabrics and notions. The Fabric Land Sewing School offers sewing classes for kids and adults. Metropolitan’s stores display beautiful fabrics and custom window fashions of all styles. Most locations have the designation of Hunter Douglas Gallery dealer – the highest level possible. According to Heyman, “Hunter Douglas is the industry leader in quality, style, service and innovation. They only sell through independent retailers; you cannot buy their products on-line, or at a Big Box store.” Metropolitan offers a selection of over 50,000 fabrics to choose from for drapery or reupholstery projects. If that is not enough of a selection for you, you can bring in your own fabric and they will still work with you. When asked about the numerous awards bestowed upon his company including NJ Family Business of the Year and National Retailer of the Year, Heyman responded, “awards are nice, but we simply want our customers to be happy. That is why we are here – this is a service business. Our philosophy is simple - be kind, be patient, listen and always do the right thing. We will always do the right thing… for our customers, our associates and our community.” In addition to their five stores, Metropolitan offers a FREE in-home decorating service for custom draperies, blinds, shutters, motorized shades and reupholstery.
