As we welcome the arrival of spring, we are delighted to present to you the latest edition of the Bernards-Ridge Connection. This issue is dedicated to celebrating the beauty of nature’s new blossoms, the excitement of new growth, and the joy of warm weather. Spring is a time of renewal and rejuvenation, and what better way to embrace this spirit than by exploring the new businesses that have recently opened their doors. Whether you are in search of a cozy café for a leisurely afternoon, a boutique filled with the latest fashion trends, a wellness center to nurture your body, or a designer to help update and brighten your home, our local advertisers have something for everyone. In addition to celebrating the arrival of spring, we are thrilled to announce that this issue will be dedicated to highlighting Woman-Owned Businesses. We want to take this opportunity to recognize and honor the incredible women who have shown tremendous dedication, passion and perseverance in their entrepreneurial endeavors. As a fellow business owner, it’s truly inspiring to see the hard work and dedication of other women in the business world. We’re honored to have them featured in this issue, and we support and stand by them in their entrepreneurial journey. Take a look at our Women-Owned Directory and see how many small businesses in our towns are owned by women. Together, we can uplift and empower one another to achieve greater success. These entrepreneurs have entrusted us with spreading the word about their ventures, inviting you to patronize their establishments. Let’s come together and show our support for them. We encourage you to take the time to peruse this issue and discover the hidden gems that await you in our community. Our Community News column features the good works of nourish.NJ. With the rise in families su ering food insecurity, this non-profit’s work is more important than ever. For nearly 40 years, nourish.NJ has been providing relief to those su ering from hunger, homelessness, and poverty. Read the column to learn more about the upcoming golf fundraiser and how to volunteer or donate. When I think of spring, words like renewal and transformation come to mind. Eileen Barna’s article, “Personalizing Your Bath or Kitchen,” comes just at the perfect time! Discover how to transform these spaces into “extensions of your personality.” Eileen describes how with a little planning and creativity, your bath or kitchen can become “personalized sanctuaries.” So, let’s get decorating! What are the cows on our cover whispering to each other? The artist, Michal Barkai, imagined just that when she named the piece, Local Gossips. She was inspired to paint these beautiful, colorful, texturized cows from a photo she took while sightseeing in Ireland. Could they be whispering about the tourists photographing them? Thank you for your continued readership and for joining us in welcoming the arrival of spring. We hope that this issue inspires you to embrace the spirit of new beginnings and explore the exciting opportunities that our community has to o er. Wishing you a season filled with joy, growth, and warm weather. Best regards, Anna Petro A Note From Our Publisher... Advisor-Focused #1 Response When Asked to Describe Janney’s Culture* *2021 Aon Advisor Experience Survey I have always been a writer. My first journal was yellow with a horse on it. It had one of those little silver keys and a lock that looked good but didn’t actually work. I write every night. Sometimes I record my thoughts about the day. Sometimes I write about my dreams. Sometimes I write stories. This year my teacher, Mrs. Plager, gave us a challenge. She invited us to participate in NaNoWrMo, a national writing challenge where we had to write every day in November. We had to give ourselves a word count goal and I decided on 13,000 words. I calculated that would mean writing one hour every day, but what should I write? I knew my story couldn’t have a specific middle and end because I needed the flexibility to add chapters. My idea came to me immediately! I would write a series of short adventures. By the middle of November, I started connecting the chapters and thinking about where I had been, where I was, and how I was going to find an end that made sense. By Thanksgiving, I hit my word count, so I revisited my adventures and edited. At the end of the challenge, I met my goal of 13,000 words and writing every day, but I didn’t feel done. I loved my story and wanted to share it. I wanted to publish my book! I didn’t know how to start, so my mom and dad helped me to research how. Before we published, we had more editing to do. I re-read and shared my story with my family. Everyone had ideas, some I liked and others I did not. Finally, I shared my story with Mrs. Plager. She loves to write herself and to teach writing. She took time on the weekends to read my book even though she was busy preparing lessons and being a mom. She used sticky notes to give me edits and feedback about what she liked. I incorporated many of her suggestions. Once the book was published, she helped me to share and celebrate the book with my school. The publishing process was interesting but frustrating! I learned about ISBN numbers, copyrights, and publishing options. We filled out forms and waited. Waiting was the hardest part. Then we formatted and added pictures. I had clear images in my head, but it wasn’t easy to get them right. My cover took so many edits! I was excited to see my proof book, but I also found mistakes that had to be fixed. I wanted it to be done, but I also wanted it to be perfect. There was more editing and more waiting. Finally, my book, My Not So Normal Closet, was published! It is available on Amazon and Barnes and Noble in the U.S., Germany, France, England, and many other places. I was proud and excited. Publishing a book has been my dream! If you love to write, my advice is to be patient, be prepared to edit, and find people who love writing as much as you do to help you reach your goal. My book would not be a reality if it wasn’t for Mrs. Plager’s support, my mom’s patience, and all the family and friends who believed in me. Cassie is a 5th grade student at ALT Elementary School. She is an avid skier and swimmer but learning to care for and ride a horse are tops on her list. She has always dreamed of publishing a book - her family and friends are proud of her accomplishment. Shapiro Financial Group is not a registered broker/dealer and is independent of Raymond James Financial Services. An integral part of a well-designed financial plan is tax management. Each tax season investors look back at the monies paid for taxes and search for better methods to save. Tax efficient investing at Shapiro Financial Group, involves proactive planning, execution, and monitoring. Utilizing 80 years of experience and the depth of Raymond James resources, we seek to construct personalized strategies to minimize taxes for the current investor and for the generations to come. While capital gains are taxed at lower rates than ordinary income, they should be managed. Actively managed mutual funds are not tax efficient and are best served in retirement accounts. Mutual funds pass investors net gains, not losses, and even in years in which the fund may experience a decline in value. A separately managed account (SMA) for stocks or bonds provides the benefits of direct ownership. This includes the opportunity to harvest losses and control capital gains. Tax loss harvesting for fixed income has been timely given the rapid rise in interest rates. Investors have benefited from rising stock prices, some with outsized gains or concentrated positions. Some examples are large positions in mega technology stocks, concreted positions from employment, and embedded gains from an SMA. The sale or diversification of these positions can result in significant tax liabilities. At Raymond James, however, there are Direct Index tools available to help qualified investors. Direct Indexing attempts to maximize after-tax wealth in an SMA. An advantage of the Direct Index is that it can be funded using your existing stock portfolio, cash, or other approved assets. Portfolio managers use active tax loss harvesting techniques to offset realized gains in the portfolio. Tax-managed strategies such as Direct Indexing can help alleviate tax liability, minimize capital gains, and plan for future events. By now, my readers and clients can recognize my affection for tax-free income. When considering marginal combined Federal and State rates, investors would lose more than half of their taxable interest to taxes. A well-constructed professional municipal portfolio includes consideration of credit quality, duration, issuer, call protection, and current cash flow. Here are a few tips. After the expansion of the alternative minimum tax (AMT) exemption, investors should consider the added yield from selected municipal bonds that pay interest subject to AMT. Further, avoid deep discount municipal bonds, which are typically lower than current coupons and may create taxable original issue discount (OID) income. Our practice is skilled in advanced planning techniques. Sophisticated financial plans commonly utilize trust(s) to achieve goals. The step-up market value adjustment at the time of death remains a valuable resource. A common error is funding trusts during one’s lifetime with highly appreciated assets. The beneficiary assumes the donor’s basis, thereby missing out on the stepped-up tax basis adjustment, subjecting the beneficiary to additional capital gains. The current estate and gift tax exemption of $13.61M per person provides relief and opportunity to many. However, this window may close at the end of next year. The exemption is scheduled to revert to prior levels of $5M indexed for inflation. We help clients, along with their legal counsel, design and implement sophisticated financial plans to maximize and retain wealth while minimizing taxes. As a boutique firm, we provide personalized service to our clients. We believe that efficient tax management can add meaningful long-term returns. THE BERNARDS-RIDGE CONNECTION PAGE 14 APRIL/MAY 2024 theconnectionsnj.com When heading to court in a divorce, it’s important to be informed about the process. In the Beginning The party who filed first (the plaintiff) puts on evidence first. Evidence usually comes in two forms: testimony and documents. The plaintiff can choose which witnesses appear and in what order. Sometimes the plaintiff even decides to call the defendant as their first witness. Plaintiff’s Testimony If you’re the plaintiff, your initial testimony will be conducted by your lawyer. It’s your lawyer’s job to cover every salient fact that needs to be placed into evidence. That initial examination may be your only chance to tell your side of the story. At the same time, you must present the court with any relevant documents to support your case. Cross-Examination Next, your spouse’s lawyer gets to ask questions in what is called “cross-examination.” Cross-examination allows the opposing side to test your credibility or show documents or other evidence that may appear to contradict your account. It is often pointed and painful, and every witness must be prepared to be challenged. Redirect and Re-Cross Your attorney then gets a second chance to ask you questions, with limitations. The questions must pertain to subjects on which you were cross-examined. The goal is to clear up any misunderstandings or ambiguities. The other side can then “re-cross” you on subjects discussed during re-direct. Once the witness has been thoroughly examined, it’s time for a new witness. The same rules apply to all future witnesses. Direct examination of a key witness can go on for hours or even days, which means you may have a long wait before your lawyer gets a chance to cross-examine your spouse and even longer until you can set the record straight with your own testimony. Defendant’s Turn Once the plaintiff’s attorney has concluded, the defendant gets to present his or her case by calling each of their witnesses. The presentation of the defendant’s case is similar to the plaintiff’s, with direct examination of the witnesses followed by cross-examination, re-direct, and recross. Rebuttal If subjects come up in the defendant’s case that the plaintiff never discussed, the plaintiff can recall witnesses for the purpose of rebuttal. Trial Issues Cases frequently focus on equitable distribution, which can be unwieldy because people own complex assets, as well as alimony and custody. Experts may be necessary. In these proceedings, both sides are supposed to share their exhibits with the other side before the trial. It is usually productive, if not imperative, to sit down with your attorney in the days before a complex hearing to review what you will have to tell the court and to try to anticipate how the other side will respond. With big airy windows and a warm, welcoming vibe, this modern hair studio has attracted clients seeking out exceptional hair coloring results and the latest styling techniques. Owner Angela London says her passion for hair coloring and styling started as a child. “My mother and aunt are hair stylists, so I grew up in the industry,” Angela says. As a teenager, she started assisting at her mother’s salon in Colombia, and by age 20, she opened her own salon there. Angela moved to the United States in her mid-twenties, determined to continue her career in the beauty industry. She quickly learned English, got her NJ hairstylist license, and took classes at the Artistic Academy of Hair Design. She continued her education at L’Oreal Professionnel SOHO Academy and Vidal Sassoon in New York. Training at these top academies solidified for Angela that she wanted to shape her career as a professional colorist and specialist in balayage, a technique where the stylist free-hand paints highlights onto the hair. “I always knew I wanted my path to be a hair colorist. That’s what I really love and am passionate about,” says Angela. Angela worked at several salons in the area and in March 2023, she opened the Angela London Hair Studio, with a special focus on hair coloring. The team is known for creating beautiful and complex blondes and brunettes as well as doing fashion colors and color correction. To achieve these looks, Angela feels the client–stylist connection is extremely important. “We welcome all new clients and offer free consultations,” she says. “It’s very important that we listen to clients to learn about their needs so we can guide them with the best options for achieving the look they’re after.” The hair studio also offers other services like cuts, treatments, texturing, and even services for children. “I want the community to have a place in town where they can bring our toddlers, children, and teens for cuts. Many other places don’t allow kids.” Having her studio be a part of the Mendham community is important to Angela. She raised her daughter here and adores it. “It’s such a welcoming, supportive community. I just love it here,” she states. For Angela, the icing on the cake of being a hair studio owner is connecting with her staff. The team is composed of young, passionate, talented hair colorists and stylists. They all love to help clients and enjoy refining their hair styling and coloring skills. Angela loves sharing her knowledge with her team. “I love to help other people grow,” she says. “I want to pass on the legacy of what I have learned: If you work hard, are passionate about your art, and focus on it, you can make your dreams come true.” To learn more about Angela London Angela London Hair Studio, visit www.angelalondonhairstudio.com or call 973-434-2121. From your suits to your polo shirts, embrace the lighter colors and soak up that sunshine. Suiting Up: Not So Seriously Wearing a suit doesn’t have to be a pain or something you’re forced to do. Every year the suit gets easier to wear for guys, with unconstructed jackets (no heavy interior canvas) still reigning supreme.Color-wise, we always like to lighten up as well. Medium blue and grey are always the most popular, but this spring you’ll also see some earth tones as well in shades of brown, olive, and sage. FASHIONFLASH Spring Style Scoop By David Marzano Manager, Adams Fine Clothing and Tuxedos Polos: Not Just for Golf Polos are your best friend this spring. Why? Because you can wear it with ANYTHING. Suit? Check. Jeans? Check. Shorts? Check. Material-wise, we love lightweight cotton, performance blends, and even dressier linens and silks. Start with a neutral color and you’ll be shocked at how much they go with. Pants: Get Dusty Gone are the days of “go to hell” pants. This season we’re focusing on what we call “The Dustys” in soft colors. Shades of lavender, orange, and baby blue make a great versatile pair of pants that don’t scream “Look at me.” Dress Shirts: Perfect in Pastels Perfect in Pastels Looking into your closet I bet you have a lot of blue and white shirts. Nothing wrong with that. But this season give your outfit a springtime lift with a pastel pink or lilac shades. Want to subtly stand out this wedding season? Throw on a pastel shirt with your suit and try to keep track of all the compliments you’ll get. Lavender and Sage: Calming Candles or Seasonal Sportcoats? Lavender and sage have always been important spring colors. But this year they’ve taken center stage as your new favorite sport coat. We find they work best when they’re the lead singer of your look. There is no better way to get away from it all and enjoy New Jersey’s beautiful coast than on a sailboat. Sailing is a sport that can be enjoyed by people of all ages and abilities and is something the whole family can do together. If you are looking for a true “staycation” to enjoy with your whole family, look no further than the Raritan Yacht Club Raritan Yacht Club. It is family friendly, affordable and makes the joy of sailing accessible to everyone. The second oldest yacht club in the United States, it was founded in 1865 and sits on the Raritan Bay in Perth Amboy. Raritan Bay is only 14 miles from Sandy Hook- a 3 hour sail- but it is quiet with no bridges, locks, or canals to clear, making it the perfect place for beginners to learn to sail or for experienced sailors to race or just enjoy a beautiful day. The Raritan Yacht Club is proud of its legacy and rich nautical history, but it is in no way stuffy or exclusive. Its beautiful waterfront clubhouse is open year round with a full service galley and outdoor seating overlooking the bay. Members get together regularly in the outdoor seating area on the bay or in the clubhouse for live entertainment and game night or for special events like the annual pig roast or shrimp boil. The members love to sail and want to share their love of the sport with others. It’s that simple. To that end, they offer lots of options for members and non-members to learn about the sport. For juniors, they offer a Learn to Sail Program that is open to nonmembers. Classes run in 2- three week sessions, four days a week, from 9:30-3:30pm for kids ages 7-18. Classes start the last week in June and run through the first week in August and cost only $775 for a 3 week session. For more information, contact Gary Myer at garyamyer@gmail.com. They also have an Advanced 420 Racing Program for juniors to continue race training serving as a bridge to high school and college racing. The juniors attend three regattas (two away) and have a practice regatta at the Club. You are never too old to pick up the sport. Raritan Yacht Club offers a training program based on US Sailing’s First Sail Program which is open to members and nonmembers. On any given Wednesday during the season, racing teams are always looking for crew. Going out for a sail and joining in the fun is another great way to learn and to meet great people. One of the most popular programs the Raritan Yacht Club runs is the Boat Share Program. If you do not want the expense or commitment of owning a boat, you can join the Shared Boat Program where, for an annual fee in addition to the cost of membership, you can have access to one of a fleet of five Colgate 26 or a Catalina 250. It is a perfect program for people looking to build experience on a vessel that is capable and safe in a wide variety of conditions. The rentals are available from early May through late October. The best way to fully experience the Club is through membership. There is a special level of membership available for people ages 21- 33 called the Corinthian membership. There is no initiation fee or galley/bar minimum spend and the annual fee is reduced, but they have full access to all membership privileges. If you are curious about what Raritan Yacht Raritan Yacht Club is all about, email membership@ryc.org. Someone will get back to you and help to arrange an opportunity for you to see the club- maybe come out and join in a race or spend an evening watching the bay. Although the season is from May through October, the clubhouse is open and there are events and activities all year long. It is definitely worth a look. theconnectionsnj.com SENIOR LIVING PAGE 32 When we were toddlers, we learned to fall and then, almost, bounce back to our standing position. Aaah, the good old days! Now, those of us in our 70’s fear falling for very good reason. Not only do we not bounce back to our standing position, but we have the potential to not bounce back at all. I am reminded that nearly a decade ago, I was in a rehabilitation facility due to a serious health issue, and was told that they were extremely concerned about my balance. That was when I was in my 60’s. The aging process has continued, regardless of how many times I remind myself. I do all I can to stay strong and healthy. If I was facing balance issues ten years ago, I can only imagine that my center of gravity is now at greater risk. Recently, I was chatting with a gentleman who was preparing to lecture to women in a club to which I belong. Having attended a lecture by him only a year ago, I remembered him walking across the stage, turning to the audience, turning to the screen, and moving spryly on the stage. Discussing this year’s program, he told me that he will remain in a chair. He now moves very gingerly and will remain stationary throughout the lecture. He went on to say he gets dizzy easily, and I asked if he had positional vertigo. He responded that he did. We discussed spotting himself when he turns by fixing his eyes on a spot to steady himself. For many of us who get up at night to use the bathroom, that is a key to being steady on our feet. A minute to fix our eyes on a spot on the wall or lifting our feet to a level where they can be seen without looking down may make the difference between falling and returning safely to our bed. Tricks of the trade? Just one of many we should learn. I know that when I am among my peers, of all the fears that seniors mention, falling is a universal concern. Bones become more porous as we age and they become more vulnerable to fractures. Tendons and ligaments stretch and lose their collagen and elastin, making them more vulnerable to tears. The inner ear which is the center for balance, becomes less reactive and eyes register movement more slowly. All of this sets the stage for a fall. Additionally, leaving something where it shouldn’t be left seems to occur more often, as our minds seem to work harder to stay focused. If there is an antidote, it is staying as fit as possible without putting ourselves in danger. Weight training is wonderful for our osteoporotic bones as long as the weights are manageable and don’t cause us to be off balance. Sitting in a chair is very strongly suggested, since anchoring ourselves there allows us to focus on lifting without sliding or tipping over. Group workouts encourage participation, and the support of each other is invaluable. Having a cup of tea together after class helps with socialization, which is always a plus for seniors who may live alone. Denial never got anyone anywhere! Rather than denying that we need to be more mindful, let’s put our energy into getting stronger and more aware of our surroundings at all times. Stand tall, near a chair, find a spot on the wall, lift one leg and count to five, lower to the ground; lift the next leg, and do the same. Give yourself a hand because you have just performed an important exercise that will go a long way to supporting your body, regardless of your age! I know that when I am among my peers, of all the fears that seniors mention, falling is a universal concern. SENIOR CORNER Fear of Falling By Ellyn Mantell

theconnectionsnj.com SENIOR LIVING PAGE 34 It is important to me that every day be acknowledged as having value, particularly as time passes more and more quickly each year. It is easy to forget that within each twenty-four hours, much happens or has the potential to happen all around the world, and personally in my world. Slowing down enough to recognize the value of each day is one of my resolutions, and to that end, every day is truly a holiday! My daily calendar this year is so much fun because it celebrates such things as Whipped Cream Day (January 5th) or Lego Day (January 28th) and dozens of obvious or obscure items to be considered. Each morning, as I get my coffee and breakfast together, I rip off the previous page and look with enthusiasm at what is being honored for that day. I typically smile and go on with my puzzles, catching up with the news. But every once in a while, I stop and think about a time in my life the featured holiday brings to memory. National Pizza Day (January 7th) brought back memories of treasured dinners with my father, who adored pizza. His favorite place for the cheesiest of them all was down the shore in Neptune, New Jersey, and we were known to drive the hour to Mom’s Kitchen late at night for a slice…okay, for an entire pie. The oil dripping down my hands as I took my first bite, burning the roof of my mouth mercilessly, slurping an ice cold soda, swirled in my mind. The image of my father, who we lost at a very young 45 years old, as alive and vibrant, pulling the stringy mozzarella from his cheek, brought tears to my eyes, and I felt a thrill flutter in my chest for a moment. Celebrating Cloud Day (January 21st) was surreal because the clouds of late have been quite amazing. High and puffy, white tinged with hints of pink or gray, animals and continents, fruit and amorphous visions all dance in the skies at different times and at different points throughout the day. How did the calendar creator know such images would appear, disappear, and reappear before my eyes on a regular basis? February 2nd is Tater Tot Day and that reminds me of being a young mother, desperately trying to entice my daughters to stop playing long enough to eat dinner. “Tater Tots, Girls,” I would yell with fingers crossed that they would find the salty treat worthy of putting down whatever had their attention. I reminded myself of the commitment I made to “never eat off their plate” as my number one homage to watching my weight. Now I think about the joy I have when we are all in the same place, eating the much more sophisticated foods they enjoy. Tater Tots are replaced by sushi, sashimi, and the like. “When did all of this change?” I ask myself. One of my favorites is February 7th, Send a Card to a Friend Day. I love this because I am blessed with many friends, some I see regularly and some, from time to time. But it also reminds me of my friends I have lost, and how I wish I could send them a card. If this day has reminded me of nothing else, it has pointed out that today is the day to do what is in my heart, not to wait. Somehow, I know in the deepest part of me, that nothing is more important, and I am grateful my calendar reminded me of a loving holiday. Slowing down enough to recognize the value of each day is one of my resolutions, and to that end, every day is truly a holiday! SLICE OF LIFE Everyday is a Holiday By Ellyn Mantell
