Crown Veterinary Specialists started as a mobile surgical unit with the dream of helping critically ill animals. It is now a thriving veterinary practice housed in a state-of-the-art facility for treating injured or sick animals. Dr. Wendy E. Ross, DVM, DACVS, a seasoned veterinary surgeon and founder of Crown Veterinary Specialists, started the practice as a mobile service in 2002 but quickly saw the need to expand. “I had more surgeries than I could handle in the mobile unit and I wanted to offer other medical specialties. So, I started looking for a permanent site,” she states. The group now has an emergency room open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week (including holidays) for treating dogs and cats needing emergency and critical care. The experienced emergency room staff treats pets quickly and with compassion. Crown Veterinary Specialists has an inhouse lab that handles diagnostic testing quickly and efficiently. The group also has advanced radiology equipment such as digital radiology to capture X-ray images (sometimes without sedation), CT, endoscopy, ultrasound, and a new MRI machine. “Before we acquired the MRI, families would have to travel outside the area to get an MRI for a pet,” says Dr. Ross. Pets with chronic conditions can also receive many types of care through the practice. • Three on-site surgical suites follow strict sterility protocols and ensure animals receive top-notch care. CONNECTION COMMENDS • A fully equipped intensive care unit is overseen by a board-certified critical care specialist. Pets with infectious diseases are kept in an isolation room. • Cardiology care such as diagnostic testing and procedures is provided by a board-certified veterinary cardiologist. • Dermatology services help pets get relief from fleas, allergies, skin infections, autoimmune skin issues, and more. • Integrative care and acupuncture are used to complement traditional care with other approaches to pain management. • Internal medicine specialists treat the stomach, kidney, bladder, breathing, endocrine, and other problems. • Neurology specialists treat brain, nerve, and spinal cord problems. • Oncology specialists treat patients using surgery, chemotherapy, and radiation therapy. • Ophthalmology services include vision care and treatment for eye diseases. • Rehabilitation protocols help pets recover from surgery or injury with techniques like hydrotherapy, treadmills, acupressure, and trigger point release. Even after 15 years, the practice continues to grow and expand. Dr. Ross said, “We are getting to the point that we need more room so we can serve more patients.” A large expansion is slated to be completed later this year.
