The family-owned business had occupied its former North Plainfield storefront for 50+ years, but owner Bruce Heyman says it was time for a change: “We’re not your grand- mother’s fabric store any more.” The new 9,000-sq.ft. location combines two businesses – Metro- politan Window Fashions and Fabricland – under the one roof, and the large showroom better represents the store’s current mix of 75% window fashions and 25% fabric. But, that doesn’t mean the store is changing what Central, NJ shoppers love about Fabricland: a great selection and top-notch cus- tomer service. Heyman states, “Customers in our area are very nostalgic about Fabricland,” founded by his grand- father Philip Heyman, then owned by his parents Gertrude and Jay Heyman, and now owned by Bruce. This special store is one of the largest fabric stores in the Garden State and is the only one in the area to offer all four types of fabric (apparel, upholstery, drapery, and quilt) as well as sewing machines. In addition, Fabricland offers sewing lessons for children and adults. “No one else does what we do. It’s a unique business,” says Heyman. The new showroom highlights all these offerings as well as its core business of window fashion includ- ing custom treatments, readymade items, and fabrics for sewers to make their own. Heyman says Fab- ricland’s custom window decorat- ing business is hot, driven by the store’s numerous options and the skill of their consultants for narrow- ing down the field. “When it comes to in-home dec- orating, we have more than 70,000 fabrics available to us. The job of our decorators is to narrow down 70,000+ fabrics to a handful of options for clients to choose among,” Heyman says of this free service. “Listening is key when we match fabric, style, and price to a customer’s taste. Really, our job is guidance.” Among the options are Hunters Douglas blinds, shades, and other window coverings. In fact, Fabricland is said to be the largest Hunters Douglas dealer in NJ. Motorized options are especial- ly popular right now. The custom window treatment design process happens very quick- ly. “You call the store and we have a decorator out to your home with- in the next few days,” says Hey- man, who says the store makes sure customers are pleased with the workmanship and materials before considering a job “done.” For more information, or for a free in-home decorating consulta- tion, contact Metropolitan Win- dow Fashions at 877-722-1100 or visit windowfashions.com.
