After high school, Richard enlisted in the Air Force and spent time in Europe where he took advantage of visiting many world-renowned art museums, an art education in itself. Upon completion of his service, he was able to study illustra- tion and graphic design at the Massachu- setts College of Art. Some of his freelance clients in Boston were Little Brown Pub- lishing, The Boston Globe and The New England Aquarium. Moving to the New York City area in the 90s enabled Richard to study oil painting at The Art Students League. It was a dream come true to study with nationally- known masters where the walls seemed to breathe centuries of painting tradition. Never one to be satisfied too long with the same thing, Richard stowed his brush- es for a time, taking to the idea of writing a book. It all started with one of his fan- tasy-themed paintings. The result was “The Gift of the Quoxxel,” a humorous illustrated fairy tale (available on Ama- zon). The idea of bookmaking seemed appropriate for some other material Richard had done during his time in Berlin. The result became “The Baker Flight Coloring Book – Life in Berlin with the 6912th,” a humorous memoir of mil- itary life during the Cold War. It was released on Amazon in 2019. Richard is a member of The Salmagundi Club, NYC, The Art Students League, NYC, and The Center for Contemporary Arts in Bedminster.
