EACH YEAR, WOMEN’S HISTORY MONTH shines a light on the often unsung contributions of women around the world. This year, more than ever, women’s contributions deserve recognition. Holding families and society together, women have done it all during the pandemic: Wife. Mother. Daughter. Teacher. Front-line worker. Caregiver. First responder. Professional. Politician — including, finally in the U.S., even Vice President. “I have seen all of the women in my life step up to work even harder — as caretakers for sick loved ones, teachers to their children, to help feed their communities and fight for social justice. Their response has left me in awe,” says Marci McGregor, senior investment strategist, Chief Investment Office, Merrill and Bank of America Private Bank. On the other hand, the financial impact of the pandemic has threatened to erase decades of economic gains and progress towards equality; many women have left the workforce, citing the pressures of juggling careers and homeschooling as a reason. Yet, as vaccination programs ramp up and stimulus plans help to boost economic recovery, women may emerge stronger and more resilient than ever, using lessons learned to re-set their financial and professional lives and continue boldly on the path toward gender equality. Below, several Bank of America and Merrill women leaders offer tips for moving forward. Q. How have you dealt with the stress of the pandemic, and what lessons have you learned? “What a rollercoaster of a year!” says McGregor. Like many women, she found that prioritizing her health was key to managing stress. “Just finding a way to get outside every day helped,” she says. Ninon Marapachi, head of Asset Manager Relationships, Investor Solutions Group, Bank of America, shares that “the recent health crisis has taught me to treasure moments with people who are close to me.” Learning to let go and “not strive for perfection” were key takeaways for Nancy Fahmy, head of Alternative Investments and Specialty Asset Management, Bank of America. And from Jen Auerbach-Rodriguez, managing director, Strategic Growth Markets, Merrill Lynch Wealth Management, comes this reaffirmation of a valuable rule to live by: “Give people the benefit of the doubt. You never know what someone is going through.” Q: Do you have tips for staying connected, proving your value and getting promoted while working remotely? “I have tried to set aside time to catch up with colleagues I used to see in the office about things unrelated to work,” says McGregor. Many women leaders point to the value of mentorship as a way of staying connected and contributing to the culture of their company. “Make the time to check in on people,” says Auerbach-Rodriguez. Fahmy also recommends “looking for opportunities to present your work at team meetings,” even via video camera. On the subject of career building, Kirstin Hill, chief operating officer, Merrill Lynch Wealth Management, Bank of America, offers this advice: “Let your managers know what you have accomplished, in a clear, simple way, allowing them to tell your story on your behalf.” Q. What financial advice do you have for women who want to step back professionally—to create better work-life balance or manage a caregiving role? “Having additional time at home, or for yourself, can be priceless,” says Auerbach-Rodriguez. Fahmy agrees: “Ensure that you can afford to take a career break. You may need to adjust your spending habits or lifestyle.” Adds McGregor, “Check in with your HR department. Many employers are offering expanded benefits to caregivers and to support their employees’ physical and mental health right now.” Q. How can all of us be better prepared financially for the next unexpected event? “Not spending all that you earn — it is important to have an emergency fund to cover at least six months of basic expenses,” says Marapachi. McGregor adds, “Pay yourself first. It sounds so simple, but being diligent about saving is the best way to prepare for unexpected events. Set it up to happen automatically.” She also recommends having “the difficult conversations about wills, financial planning and health directives before you are in a crisis.” Q. Who has inspired you the most in the last year? Health care workers and educators rank high in almost everyone’s estimation. Fahmy applauds her childhood friend, a pediatric ICU nurse: “She worked tirelessly to care for coronavirus patients while continuing to care for her own family.” And Hill celebrates her daughter’s teacher, saying “not only did she keep my daughter engaged academically remotely, but she did so with an extraordinary sense of empathy and understanding. She is one of many teachers like that.” “There are just too many choices,” sums up Auerbach-Rodriguez. Women’s contributions during the pandemic are nothing short of extraordinary. And their example provides hope for a brighter future for us all. For more information, contact Merrill Financial Karen A. Bob Jamrog, President and Owner of the Hunterdon and Central Somerset County branches has noticed customers becoming sophisticated in their recent purchases by requesting a broader range of services from the “painter,” such as color consultation, wallpaper removal, carpentry and cabinet painting. CertaPro Painters services include pressure washing, wallpaper removal, cabinet painting, epoxy garage floors, deck staining, interior and exterior painting and staining and light carpentry. With business hours from 9:00am – 5:00pm Monday through Friday (although often providing estimates and executing projects on offhours and weekends), Jamrog continually strives to live by and run the business by the “golden rule” we all learned back in our school days, which is treating others the way in which you would like to be treated. “We approach each project with the idea that we are painting this customer’s home as though it were our own home,” he says. What sets CertaPro Painters apart from other companies? They are built on quality, not just the quality of the paint job but the overall experience, says Jamrog. They begin every job by setting up the estimate then providing a detailed proposal clearly defining the scope of work and corresponding costs associated with each aspect of the project. Crews then show up with the production manager previewing the project with the paint crew and customer. In most cases, they do not take deposits, yet have the customer sign the proposal and do not accept payment until the project is completed. CertaPro Painters warranties their work for two years to ensure the customer is satisfied. In the day and age of Covid, there has been what Jamrog believes is a pent-up demand that has been having a positive impact on their business. “However, there is a negative impact as well: with Covid there has been a significant fear and uncertainty created and as a result, this has had an impact on how we deal with our customers,” he explains. “We try to provide a sense of normalcy and routine into their schedules in this ongoing environment of uncertainty.” He and his wife, Kim are firm believers in “paying it forward.” “I have been blessed throughout my career to have had mentors and people that have helped me succeed therefore we believe it our responsibility and mission to help our team members succeed and grow in their respective roles and responsibilities,” he fondly says. When he isn’t helping folks create the homes of their dreams, he enjoys golfing and landscaping his own property! theconnectionsnj.com HOME & DESIGN PAGE 28 There are several design trends for the coming year that really stand out and some can be attributed to living in a pandemic for almost two years! Color is always an important trend in design. This year shades of green have emerged again. Vivid emerald, oceanic blue-greens and gentle gray- greens are some of the colors you’ll see in home design. Scientists have found that green hues alleviate stress, decrease heart rate and refresh our senses. Any wonder that this color has become more popular this past year? You’ll see these fresh greens in paints, fabrics and kitchen cabinets. Benjamin Moore’s 2022 Color of the Year, October Mist #1495, is a gorgeous muted sage that creates a serene, spa-like vibe used alone, but can also be a beautiful neutral backdrop for an array of other colors. Indoor foliage is another way to bring green into your home this coming year. According to the National Gardening Association, houseplant sales in the U.S. have increased more than 50% in the past three years. Living plants connect us to the outside, bring nature in and, most importantly, convert carbon dioxide into new oxygen and help purify the air. Plants also increase the humidity in the air through a process called transpiration, which may help alleviate winter’s dryness. Well-chosen plants complement any décor. From a small potted plant on your work surface to a collection of large floor plants in a family gathering space, nothing adds more energy and life to a room than living plants. Natural materials such as stone, wood and found archaeological pieces are always organic and classic in interiors. 2022 will bring us some beautiful new woven options in bamboo, wicker and rattan. The edgy, hard lined industrial look in furniture is being replaced with more rounded forms and curves. Chairs, sofas, tables and lighting fixtures in woven natural materials add a casual, lived-in elegance to any room. Even the addition of a few important accessories can update and refresh a room. You’ll likely see fluting and reeding as well as flat fronts and smooth doors on cabinets. Possibly springing from the recent interest in traditional ship-lap, flat fronts on furniture and kitchen cabinets may move to the background, while milled groove details will be seen in storage options all over the home. A wonderful way to add interest to a large wall is to add texture through flat slats or three dimensional lines. Repurposing our homes to support multiple functions is a dilemma many of us have faced in working from home. You may not have heard of Crittall-style partitions but you’ve most likely seen them. Originally introduced by Frances Henry Crittall in England in 1860, these slim profile steel frames with glass panels divide space but keep interior spaces open to light. Both modern and industrial they provide separate areas in which to work and live. Still charming after so many years, versatile and high in style, the partitions can be used in family living spaces, kitchens and even as shower enclosures, Crittall-style partitions are highly functional and the look is on point for traditional, transitional or contemporary homes. Whether your home needs a better use of space, a few new pieces of furniture or some fresh color, 2022 will be the year to turn the house you love into the home you love to live in. "We selected Marie Young as our Real Estate agent when we wanted to sell our home after considering several others, and we are thrilled we did! Professionally, Marie stood out among her peers from the first meeting in terms of how well she prepared, her knowledge of our neighborhood, understanding of the pricing, integrity, accessibility, follow-through, work ethic and attention to details. She didn't delegate to others on her team. When another agent left our garage door open and lights on in the house when we weren't there, she left her home at night and personally went to our home to secure it! Way above the call of duty!! She is simply the best! And we would use her again if we ever move again! You would make a mistake not to select her in Bernards Township for sure!!" -- ZILLOW TOP TEN THINGS TO DO WHEN SELLING YOUR HOME: ©2022 Coldwell Banker Realty. All rights reserved. We start by assessing what we can do to help our dogs understand us better. Sometimes frustration from both parties in the relationship stems from not speaking the same language… and it’s true because we don’t! As humans, we may find it difficult to get our dogs to understand us when we speak in a language that they do not. So, at My Dog’s Got Class, we try to help people learn how to speak the language of dogs. The most useful tool in dog training is something that every dog parent has in their toolbox; it’s our own bodies! Dogs learn and understand things more visually than auditorily; so when trying to get your dog to do something, we recommend thinking about what your body is saying first. In group classes at My Dog’s Got Class, when we teach something new to the dog, we always start off silently. We make sure that the dog understands our hand/body cues first before we add the verbal cue. In teaching ‘Down’, for example, we lure the dog into position nose to toes first, over and over. While doing this we make sure that our hand cue looks the same when there is a lure in it, and when there is not so when the time comes to remove the lure, our hand cue has not changed. Then, we practice many times without the lure to make sure the dog really understands that hand cue. Once the behavior is patterned with the hand cue, we can then add the verbal cue. The reason we wait to add the verbal cue is to ensure the dog completely understands the hand cue and then it can be paired with the auditorial cue. If the understanding of the hand cue is not present, the connection to the verbal cue cannot be made. Once the connection between visual and verbal is made, the next step would be to start removing the visual cue. If the connection does not happen, this is when we find ourselves repeating verbal cues and getting frustrated. We can simply remind the dog with our visual cue for success! Another way our bodies are a useful tool in training is for ‘Recalls’. As humans, it is a simple instinct to run after someone or something that we are trying to catch; however, dogs are very aware of spatial pressure. If we run after them in hopes of trying to catch them, we often find ourselves initiating a chasing game. This is because when we run after them, we increase our spatial pressure onto them. Instead, we should run the other way or shuffle backwards while facing them. This encourages them to follow us and come play our game instead. The backing up of our bodies decreases the pressure and actually makes them want to come towards us! Once they are on their way to us we can start getting our treats ready to reward them when they get to us. There are many other ways we use our bodies in training whether it be for visual cues or for spatial pressure. For ‘Stay’ we use a stop sign hand as a visual, for example, but for jumping we would use spatial pressure. Come to a group class to learn more tips on how you can use your body as a tool for training! Our current class schedule can be found on our website: www.mydogsgotclass.com If we run after them in hopes of trying to catch them, we often find ourselves initiating a chasing game. This is because when we run after them, we increase our spatial pressure onto them. Instead, we should run the other way or shuffle backwards while facing them. We make sure that the dog understands our hand/body cues first before we add the verbal cue. In teaching ‘Down’, for example, we lure the dog into position nose to toes first, over and over.
