Aylward (Howard Pyle pupil) at the Newark School of Fine and Industrial Arts and later with Paul Bransom in Jackson, WY. Over the years his work has been influenced by artists he has admired such as Howard Pyle, N. C. Wyeth, W. R. Leigh, Carl Rungius and Frederic Remington. Doug’s art career began as an illustrator of big game animals for magazines and books. His paintings and drawings appeared in numerous periodicals such as Outdoor Life, Sports Afield and Reader’s Digest. Notable books he illustrated are Jack O’Connor’s The Big Game Animals of NorthAmerica, andClydeOrmond’s, The Complete Book of Hunting. Collectively his illustrations have appeared in over thirty-five books. Doug’s paintings are represented in the collections of The National Museum of Wildlife Art, Jackson, WY, the Glenbow Museum, Alberta, Canada, Brandywine River Museum, Chadds Ford, PA, and the Hiram Blauvelt Art Museum, Oradell, NJ among others. Having collected the works of N. C. Wyeth for many years, in 1972 Doug co-authored with his father, the book, N. C. Wyeth, The Collected Paintings, Illustrations and Murals. Additionally, he has written numerous articles about artists: Carl Rungius, Charles Livingston Bull, Philip R. Goodwin, Frederic Remington, Charles Russell, A.B. Frost and N. C. Wyeth. This recognized American Master is a local treasure, living in our own backyard in Hunterdon County. Studio 7 Fine Art Gallery in Bernardsville is proud to be hosting The Wild Bunch, North American & African Wildlife by Mr. Allen from January 26 – March 31, 2022.
