I am sixteen years old and currently a junior at Ridge High School. I have been taking art classes in school my whole life and I spend vast amounts of time painting and drawing. Growing up, I have always had a deep appreciation and curiosity for art, including going to art museums, painting with my siblings, or just sketching in my notebook. I also play lacrosse for my high school team and have danced competitively and non-competitively for almost 15 years in various types of dance including jazz, ballet, and contemporary. I work as an assistant dance teacher at my studio. I enjoy volunteering with the youth group at my parish, and I am a part of Ridge High School’s National Honor Society and Italian Honor Society. In my free time, I love going to the beach, reading, baking with my mom, and playing sports. I love spending time with my friends and family. Editorials... As we embark on summer and the school year comes to a close with graduation season approaching, we are thrilled to bring you a special June issue of the Bernards-Ridge Connection. This issue will honor the achievements of the talented students in our community. We have chosen stunning artwork created by students from our very own local school district on the cover. Their artwork serves as a visual representation of the creativity and potential that exists within our local young adults. In addition to highlighting these remarkable students, we want to make your graduation celebrations even more memorable. We have curated a selection of local restaurants that are perfect for hosting graduation dinners, parties and other celebratory gatherings. The businesses in our community are the heart and soul of our neighborhoods, offering unique products, services and experiences that you won’t find anywhere else. We encourage you to support these local gems and discover the hidden treasures they have to o er. In keeping with student achievement and graduation as this issue’s theme, we have chosen student- writer Maxwell Silver’s article as our Teen Voice column. It is apropos for the June issue as he discusses the highs and lows of transitioning from middle school to high school. All rising freshmen will benefit from and relate to his reflections and anticipations. In Lessons from a Life Coach, Brianna Bridges discusses, “The Key to Unlocking Your Hidden Potential.” We have all had moments when we believed we weren’t good enough. Brianna talks about how negative thoughts can hold us back from being the greatest version of ourselves. Please read her article to discover how to reframe your self-thought to achieve your highest potential. The beautiful corals on our cover remind me of sunny days spent at the beach. The oceanic cover was painted by Ava Antogiovanni, a student at Basking Ridge High School. She has titled her piece, Bleached Coral and was inspired “to depict an exquisite coral reef undergoing the process of coral bleaching.” She explains that coral “becomes starkly white as it falls victim to climate change.” When you visit any of our featured businesses, please let them know that you discoveredthem through our magazine. By doing so, you not only support these local establishments, but also help us continue to spread the word about their exceptional productsand services. Trust us to be your go-to resource for all things local and small business-related. Please join us in celebrating the beginning of summer and the remarkable local businesses that make our neighborhood shine. Wishing you a summer filled with warmth, joy and countless memories. Shapiro Financial Group is not a registered broker/dealer and is independent of Raymond James Financial Services. Asubstantial portion of today’s and future wealth is in individual retirement accounts, commonly referred to as IRAs. IRA accounts have grown, via annual contributions, rollovers from qualified plans, and compounding of investment returns. IRA accounts are titled in the name of an individual or as a beneficiary IRA. These accounts are never titled in joint ownership. IRA owners should pay particular attention to the beneficiary form attributable to the account. The beneficiary form will determine how the assets of the account are distributed, in the event of the account holder’s death. Although IRA assets are included in a decedent’s estate, IRA accounts are not administered by will or trust but rather by the beneficiary form. It is important to review your beneficiary form for life events and best to name both primary and contingent beneficiaries. There are 2 primary types of IRAs-traditional (deductible), which is funded pretax, and Roth, which is funded post-tax. In simple terms, an individual who contributes to a Traditional IRA receives a current tax deduction for annual contributions and the amounts grow tax-deferred. Distributions are taxable when taken. In contrast, Roth IRA contributions do not provide a current tax deduction, are viewed as utilizing after-tax dollars, and grow tax-deferred. However, Qualified Roth distributions are not subject to income tax. IRS rules for Qualified Roth distributions include distribution after 5 years and attainment of age 59 1/2. Hence Roth IRAs are characterized as tax-free growth. For 2024, annual IRA contribution limits are $7000 plus an additional $1000 for those 50 and older. If covered by an employer-sponsored plan such as a 401(K), you will be subject to limitations on annual IRA contributions. However, annual contribution limits to employer-sponsored plans are greater. Most 401(K) plans provide an employee option to contribute pre- or post-tax dollars. For 2024, employee contribution limits are $23,000 plus an additional $7,000 for those 50 and older. The selection of Traditional IRA versus Roth IRA, or pre-tax vs. post-tax, is a complex calculation. Further eligible individuals have a taxable option to convert traditional IRA assets to Roth IRA assets. At Shapiro Shapiro Financial Group we share a unique ability to carefully evaluate these choices for our clients. In part, we will consider participants’ needs, current and projected tax rates, asset allocation, age, net worth, and beneficiary. A well-constructed retirement plan potentially includes 2 buckets of retirement income, both taxable and nontaxable. Traditional IRAs are subject to Required Minimum Distributions (RMD). Beginning in 2023, the SECURE 2.0 Act raised the age at which you must begin taking RMDs to age 73. If you have already started taking RMDs, you will continue. Traditional beneficiary IRAs have separate distribution rules. RMDs are calculated using IRS tables which increase with age and are applied to prior year-ending balances. Traditional IRA distributions are taxable and should be well-planned. If you are philanthropic, you can donate your RMD up to $100,000 to charity, effectively reducing your taxes by lower adjusted gross income. We carefully calculate and monitor RMD administration for our clients. Traditional and Roth IRAs have grown to represent a sizable portion of investors’ wealth and retirement income. At Shapiro Shapiro Financial Group, we utilize 80 years of experience and the depth of Raymond James resources to construct personalized strategies for the current investor and generations to come. As a boutique firm, we provide personalized service to our clients. We believe that efficient tax management can add meaningful longterm returns. If you can benefit from professional investment management along with advanced financial planning, I invite you to contact me directly. I welcome the opportunity to help you and your family prosper. Cadicina Law, LLC continues to serve clients in Morris, Somerset and the surrounding Northern New Jersey counties. The firm also performs complex family law mediations and arbitrations for private clients and court appointed assignments. MATRIMONIAL & FAMILY LAW Cadicina Law, LLC 36 Cattano Ave., 6th Floor, Morristown, New Jersey 07960 TEL: 973-270-9166 FAX: 973-843-6072 cadicinalaw.com Pasqua S. Cadicina, Thomas R. McConnell, Joseph P. Cadicina, Carly DiFrancisco Office Location: The Courts in New Jersey have experienced substantial delays in addressing divorce and family law matters due to a shortage of judges in many counties and some backlog from COVID while the courts were operating remotely. If you want to be divorced in New Jersey any time soon, you should strongly consider the following path: (1) Hire an attorney who is experienced in practicing family law in New Jersey; (2) Strongly consider trying to resolve some or all of the issues between the parties so that you can proceed with an uncontested divorce; and (3) If the parties are unable to reach an agreement regarding all of the issues in their family law matter, then they should utilize family law attorneys who are well-versed and in favor of Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR). Such ADR methods include mediation and/or arbitration. In mediation, the parties retain a neutral third party, who is often an attorney, in order for the neutral party to assist in resolving the issues. If the parties are unable to reach a resolution through mediation, then they can consider arbitration which involves retaining a private family law attorney to make binding decisions regarding the issues in their matter. It is extremely important that you have an attorney, mediator and/ or arbitrator with extensive family law knowledge and experience. Individuals are cautioned about simply searching for a family law attorney/mediator/arbitrator via the Internet. It is wise to use family law firms that have extensive experience, limit their practice to divorce/family law matters, and are highly recommended by people that you know. Cadicina Law, LLC has an excellent reputation in the family law community and the attorneys have received many recognitions from “Super Lawyers”, “Best Lawyers”, Martindale Hubbell, and “Best Lawyers for Families.” Please visit our website at cadacinalaw.com or contact our office at 973-270-9166 to obtain more information and to schedule a consultation regarding your divorce or family law matter. For those not familiar with the Warren Warren County Farmers’ Fair, it is a nostalgic event that happens annually, from Saturday to Saturday, the week of August 1st. Normally sandwiched between a popular hot air balloon festival on hiatus for 2024, and a large music festival in Lehigh Valley, PA, the event can easily be overlooked. It’s a place that makes visitors feel like they have traveled back in time before cell phones and selfies were a thing that consumed people. In fact, until a few years ago, online tickets and credit card machines at the gate were unheard of. The organizers are like a family that has its ups and downs, but when a storm hit the Fairgrounds two weeks before the 2023 event, they all pulled together. Family, friends, neighbors, and local businesses worked as a team to get the Fairgrounds dried up, cleaned up, and prettied up for its 85th year. The event has roots back to 1859, but the Warren County Farmers’ Fair Association was officially created in 1937. This year the Warren County Farmers’ Fair is celebrating its 86th year. If you are quick at math you might be saying, “That math doesn’t add up.” That’s because of 2020. (Do we really want to talk about that year?) Only positive things grew out of the experience for the Warren Warren County Farmers’ Fair. The year the Fair shut down, local balloon pilots and organizers saw CONNECTION COMMENDS no reason to let indoor restrictions stop this outdoor activity. Long-time sponsor, Warren Community College in Washington, New Jersey, hosted the event, with the blessing of the Fair Directors! The College highlighted its expansive Drone/Robotics/AI program at the Fair. They welcomed the balloon festival for what was thought to be a smaller, onetime event to bridge the gap in years and keep the Fair on people’s minds. This bold move, however, expanded the Fair. Today, Warren Warren County Farmers’ Fair boasts three hot air balloon festivals. Two of the three events happen on the grounds of Warren Community College and help promote Warren UAS - a program that prepares students for high-paying jobs in multiple industries. The Warren County Farmers’ Fair Warren County Farmers’ Fair has changed with the times. Over the years, the Fair has reduced its focus on agriculture, perhaps due to less farming and more demand on farmers for time. They have added related events like truck pulls and demolition derbies. Car and truck shows complement the tractor pulls that run multiple days during the week. They have added musical entertainment with both rock and country performances. They have invested substantially in building the Kids’ Corral, where children enjoy shows, crafts, entertainment, and more, all at no charge to visiting families. Organizers have done all of this while keeping admission low and affordable-and with free parking! Much like the addition of the hot air balloon festival, all these events provide something appealing to all types of people. Visitors travel from hours away now, starting new family traditions. By expanding its offerings while staying true to its agricultural roots, the organizers of the Warren County Farmers’ Warren County Farmers’ Fair have been able to continue to deliver 86 years of Family Tradition! They look forward to seeing you from Saturday, July 27 to Saturday, August 3, in the town of Harmony, in beautiful Warren County New Jersey. This summer isjam-packed with great opportunities to expose your family and friends to the arts - for free! Whether it is comedy, musicals, or dancing and live music under the stars- it is right in your backyard and a wonderful way to enjoy a summer evening outdoors with family and friends. “Without our traditions, our lives would be as shaky as a fiddler on the roof!” So says the beloved family musical, Fiddler on the Roof Fiddler on the Roof. One tradition that is going strong is the Plays Plays in the Park at the amphitheater in Pleasant Valley Park in Basking Ridge. In its 37th year, this long-standing tradition of presenting open-air theater free of charge is continuing with Trilogy Repertory Company’s productions, Fiddler on the Roof Fiddler on the Roof and Shakespeare in Shakespeare in Hollywood. The series is funded by donations, Bernards Township Parks and Recreation, and a grant from the Somerset County Cultural and Heritage Commission. Fiddler on the Roof will be performed on July 11, 12, 13, 18, 19, and 20. This classic musical is sure to enthrall people of all ages with its endearing story set in a Jewish village in pre-revolutionary Russia. A poor milkman, determined to find good husbands for his five daughters, consults the traditional village matchmaker. His daughters have their own ideas on the subject. Its messages about struggle and tradition versus change are still relevant today. What will really captivate the audience, though, is the music. Songs like “Matchmaker, Matchmaker,” “If I Were a Rich Man” and “Do You Love Me?” will have you smiling, tapping your feet, and humming the tune for days afterward. No one does it better than the award-winning Trilogy Repertory, with its talented cast, live orchestra, and the direction of Jaye Barre. On July 26, 27, and August 1, 2, and 3, the fun will continue with Ken Ludwig’s Shakespeare in Hollywood. Produced by Peter Curley, this hilarious farce is a tale that finds two characters from Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream, Oberon, king of the fairies, and Puck, his right-hand man, lost in time on their way back to the Arden forest. They find themselves smack-dab in the middle of a Hollywood set in the 1930s. As Puck would say, “Lord what fools these mortals be!” as chaos ensues including mistaken identities, mismatched couples, romances gone awry, and a dizzying swirl of characters running amok - all making for laugh-out-loud fun for the whole family. These shows are presented on an outdoor stage in Pleasant Valley Park. They begin at 8 pm. Seating is on a first-come, first-served basis, on a sloping lawn in front of the stage. Bring lawn chairs and blankets, snacks, and bug spray (this is New Jersey in the summer after all!). Although the park is well-lit, it is helpful to have a flashlight for when you are exiting, and, if you have little ones, glow necklaces help to make them easy to spot!! How about live music? If you love live music, you do not have to pay a fortune for tickets at PNC or MetLife. Check your town’s Parks and Recreation website. Most towns sponsor live music from really talented cover bands. If your town does not, chances are that one of your neighboring towns does. These open-air concerts are a great date night, get-together with friends, or a place to let the kids run around, dance, and burn off some energy before dropping into bed! Like the Plays in the Plays in the Park, you should come early with your own chair or blanket and bring your own refreshments. Although there might be an ice cream truck stopping by, there are not likely to be any other vendors. Check with the sponsoring Parks Department for details. So scope out dreamy, midsummer entertainment offered by our local towns. Young or old, single, part of a couple or a family, you should get out there this summer and enjoy our area’s tradition of free outdoor theater and music! SUMMER FUN & FINDS PAGE 26 theconnectionsnj.com Leaving middle school comes with many mixed emotions, mostly good ones about moving on to high school, but also some I’m not excited about. The first bad thing about leaving middle school is that high school is WAY bigger so it will be harder to navigate from wing to wing. Middle school only had 3 main hallways. This has me worried about being late to my classes. I tend to stroll and that may not work out for me. The overall size of the school is like nothing I’ve known so I’ll have to learn. I will probably miss half of my classes just trying to find them at first so I hope the teachers are lenient in the beginning. I mean, WHRHS’s campus is 85 acres big (I looked it up). I’m not entirely certain what WMS’s footprint is (couldn’t find that one) but it certainly isn’t 85 acres. There are a lot of good teachers that I have gotten to know over the years and I’m even more excited for the new ones I have yet to meet. I will miss some teachers and some I will NOT. Not going to name any names but there are some I didn’t like and I’m sure some that didn’t like me, but that’s normal, after all. A good thing about leaving middle school is it allows you to branch out and meet new friends too since multiple districts go to our Regional High School. In my opinion, I think the middle school is more strict. In high school, I’m hoping it’s less rigid than I’m used to in the past. Moving up to high school has me planning how not to lose contact with some of my friends, learning to steer my way through a new building, finding lunch since there are multiple cafeterias-the usual stuff. In middle school you generally can see your friends more often, even just in the hall passing between classes, and have fun with them in lunch. I know texting and calling exists in high school, but it’s not the same when you aren’t having a lot of in-person conversations. There are also a lot of good things about stepping up to High School. The prospect of making new and unique friends from the surrounding towns with different backgrounds sounds great. The differences in each of these districts will offer more varied opportunities for in- and out-of-school activities. Although it’s a really big step in my education, I feel proud to be graduating and taking with me all I’ve learned in my last 9 years of school. The uncertainty of what’s to come is a little scary but I think it will be exciting when I get there. The variety of clubs and sports offered in the Freshman Orientation night recently really opened my eyes to all I’ll have to choose from. I signed up for 4 things already! With that, I leave optimistic about the next chapter and the path to achieve my goals-whatever they may be. I’ve watched my brother for 4 years make his way and support me when I needed it. But his path is off to The Ohio State University. I’m so proud of him and can’t wait for my first visit. Who knows-maybe I’ll end up there too. Go Buckeyes! Maxwell is a graduating 8th grade student at the Warren Middle School. He enjoys biking, skiing and runs track. He is a whiz at gaming, loves Nutella, pizza & hippos and is always there for a great one-liner that will leave you laughing. He is a rising Freshman in the WHRHS Class of 2028. THE BERNARDS-RIDGE CONNECTION PAGE 28 JUNE/JULY/AUGUST 2024 theconnectionsnj.com Everyone is entitled to their day in court, but what if nothing can be gained by going before a judge? What if you can’t win? What if a trial will cost tens of thousands of dollars or more? In many divorce cases, reaching a settlement is your best option, but you must be prepared to be reasonable. With that in mind, here is a tongue-in-cheek list of ten things you should do if your goal is to ruin any chance of a settlement. In other words, in NO WAY SHOULD YOU DO ANY OF THE FOLLOWING THINGS. 1. Ignore your experts’ advice. What do they know about the value of your business or how a judge will assess your total income/cash flow? What does an accountant know about taxes, or how the IRS may address the creative accounting practices you or your business have employed? What does the custody expert really know? 2. Ignore your lawyer’s advice. What do they know? If your lawyer tells you to take the deal on the table because it’s a huge win, disregard it. If they tell you that you may be forced to pay your spouse’s legal fees, roll the dice. If your attorney says they are willing to try your case, but you should consider settlement because it will be more cost-effective, don’t believe it. What does your lawyer know about the law or the judge? 3. Ignore the facts of your case. Trust your ability to spin the facts in a way that doesn’t make sense. Plus, how can they prove you’re lying? 4. Ignore what the neutrals are saying. What do the Early Settlement Panelists know? What does the mediator know? When the judge has a settlement conference and gives directions, what do they know? Assume that people who have no “horse in the race” are aligned with your spouse or their attorney, have been bought off, or are just plain ignorant. 5. Ignore the law. It doesn’t apply to you anyway. 6. Misrepresent things. Do this even when the other side has documents to disprove virtually everything you are saying. 7. Try to bully your spouse. Believe that the imbalance of power that existed during the marriage will allow you to bully your spouse into an unfair settlement. Assume that your spouse’s attorney won’t protect them. 8. Take the position that you would rather pay your lawyer than your spouse. Ignore the fact that this tactic usually ends with you paying both. 9. Pretend your spouse never spent a second with the kids. Believe s/he has no right to do so in the future. Make false allegations of neglect or abuse. Ignore research that says that it is typically in the children’s best interests to spend as much time as possible with each parent. What do the “experts” know about your kids? While you are at it, bad mouth your spouse to or in front of the kids. 10. Take totally unreasonable positions. Implement any or all of the above tactics. On top of that, negotiate backwards. Put deals on the table, and then reduce what you are offering. Negotiate in bad faith. In all seriousness, reaching a divorce settlement can be difficult even with a great attorney and a reasonable approach. Don’t make it harder by falling into any of these ten traps. When your dog is doing something that is bothering you, do you ask yourself, “How do I get him to stop?” or do you ask, “Why is he doing that?” Many pet owners subconsciously get into the habit of wanting to stop behaviors without thinking about the ‘why’ behind them. By addressing problem behaviors with “how to stop it” instead of “why is it happening”, we may let the problem behavior brew into something more complex. This, in turn, makes the problem even more difficult to tackle. If problem behaviors are first addressed with a “why is this happening” mindset, the situation can be tackled at its root. If we address our dogs’ behaviors with knowledge and compassion, we have a higher likelihood of successfully changing the problem behavior. If we let our ego take over, we may blame the dog for behaviors that we might have inadvertently caused by creating the environment for them. For example, we may think that our dog is stubborn or difficult when in reality there could be a combination of underlying circumstances leading to the issue. It could be, among other things, a health or wellness issue, stress or fear, too many distractions, unclear criteria, our lack of management, or even our misunderstanding of their body language. When we fail to consider this handful of circumstances, we get frustrated and our pride takes over as a defensive response. It is important to catch ourselves in this moment and consider the dog we have in front of us. Did we unintentionally set him up to fail? Have we practiced in these conditions? Did we manage the environment to the best of our ability? These are just a few questions to ask before becoming frustrated. Being aware of our own impulses, weaknesses, and emotions can be the first step to changing our dog’s behavior. I start with how we ask our dog certain things. Is it a command or a cue? Is it a question, request, or suggestion? All of these imply certain conditions; what have we done to meet them? Next, how do you view your training? Is it obedience or leadership and caretaking? Does your dog have agency and choice to help with learning through positive reinforcement and environmental management or is it “do it or else”? What about respect? Do they know what that is or does trust and safety sound a bit better? Dog training starts with people training.
