Mia Murphy, our cover artist, is a senior at Ridge High School. Her art is titled Innocent Soles and is inspired by her memories of making her first friends on the school playground. Her use of chalk pastels was chosen to “evoke a sense of nostalgia…to transport the viewer back to those bittersweet sunlit days on the blacktop.” The medium evokes the “soft textures and vibrant colors” she was trying to create. THE BERNARDS-RIDGE CONNECTION PAGE 12 JUNE/JULY/AUGUST 2025 theconnectionsnj.com orking with your co-parent to address parenting time issues in the summer can present a host of challenges. We have represented New Jersey parents in countless disputes about how to share in the summer or in special summer events. It’s best to plan ahead, or you risk reaching the judge’s bench too late. Here is what parents need to know about common summer parenting time disputes. Summer Camp Considerations Many New Jersey parents send their children to summer camp. It’s smart to discuss camp with your co-parent as early as possible so that if you disagree, there is time to pursue mediation or, if necessary, ask the court to determine the outcome before summer begins. Is there a dispute about whether your child should go to camp or which camp they should attend? Courts often give preference to established camp traditions, unless there is a special circumstance such as a drastic change in tuition, a safety issue, or other consideration that suggests it would not be in the child’s best interests to return to their previous camp. When considering the cost of camp, keep in mind that day camps during working hours are typically considered “work-related childcare,” while overnight camps are typically considered extraordinary expenses. If your child is likely to attend camp post-divorce, it’s wise to address how these expenses will be shared in your divorce settlement agreement. Summer Travel In New Jersey, parents are commonly entitled to up to two weeks of vacation with the children during the summer and school recesses. Again, the sooner co-parents can communicate about their summer travel plans, the less likely to be a conflict. One way to address this is to memorialize in your divorce settlement agreement that, in the event parents want to exercise parenting time at the same time during the summer, one parent has preference in even years, and the other in odd years. Early communication of travel plans ensures that you and your co-parent square away all necessary details in advance: the exchange of passports, notarized consent for travel letters if needed, itineraries, and contact information. If one party opposes the choice of destination, then the amount of notice given to that party may come into play if a judge has to make the call on whether to permit the travel. Family Visits and Events Visits from out-of-town family members and special family events often take place during the summer. With so many competing opportunities — from summer programming to travel, and everything in between — it’s important to stake your claim to these dates and communicate about special plans in advance. When Disagreements Persist Addressing summer parenting time conflicts early often sets you up for success if you must bring the issue to a judge for determination. New Jersey Family Court judges prioritize summer experiences that enrich children’s lives while allowing them to maintain relationships with both parents and tend to favor parents who demonstrate good faith efforts to resolve conflicts before court intervention. This can blunt the definition between the face and neck, especially from the side profile. Fortunately, there are a variety of treatment options, ranging from non-invasive to surgical, that can significantly improve the contour. Non-Invasive Option: Kybella In younger patients with minimal fat under the chin, injectable treatments like Kybella may be ideal. Kybella contains a compound that breaks down fat, which the body then naturally absorbs. It’s FDA-approved for treating submental (under the chin) fullness and typically requires 3–5 sessions spaced 4–6 weeks apart. The procedure takes 15–20 minutes in the office, requires no special prep, and patients can resume daily activities right after. Some swelling is expected as the fat breaks down, but this gradually subsides, resulting in a slimmer profile. If fat extends beyond the chin or is more significant, however, Kybella may not be effective on its own. Minimally Invasive Option: Neck Liposuction and ThermiTight Neck liposuction is a widely used method for reducing fat and improving contour. It’s performed through a small incision under the chin, typically under local or general anesthesia. After injecting the area with a saline solution, a thin rod connected to a suction machine removes excess fat. In younger patients, the skin often retracts well after fat removal. In older individuals, loose skin may persist. In such cases, ThermiTight, a radiofrequency device, can be used through the same incision to heat the underlying skin and stimulate collagen remodeling. This promotes tightening over 1–3 months and can lead to a noticeable improvement in the neck’s appearance. Surgical Option: Neck Lift For more advanced cases involving significant fat and skin laxity, a surgical neck lift is the most comprehensive option. It begins with liposuction to remove excess fat, followed by tightening of the deeper neck muscles with sutures. This helps eliminate vertical bands that may appear with movement. Since cutting skin in the center of the neck leaves visible scars, excess skin is removed via incisions behind and sometimes in front of the ears. Through these incisions, both the skin and underlying muscles are pulled tight and secured, and the remaining skin is trimmed and carefully closed. This dual-layer correction offers dramatic, long-lasting results. Choosing the Right Option Deciding which procedure is best for you can be challenging. That’s why it’s important to consult a surgeon who offers the full range of treatments and can tailor a plan to your needs. In our practice, we provide all of these options and help patients navigate the benefits and limitations of each. Whether you’re looking for a quick fix or a lasting transformation, we’re here to help you make an informed choice and achieve a refreshed, confident appearance. Depression affects roughly 21 million Americans and about 280 million individuals worldwide. About a third of these individuals would meet the criteria for treatment-resistant depression. The medical profession is starting to prioritize these conditions and offering patients options for treatment of the various conditions that affect them. The Johnson and Johnson pharmaceutical company has developed a medication called Esketamine. Esketamine is administered in a spray that is called Spravato. Spravato is FDA-approved to treat depression. The current theory is that Spravato treats depression by blocking receptors in the brain which are classified as N-methyl-D-aspartate or NMDA receptors. Blocking these receptors causes the release of glutamate, which is a regulatory neurotransmitter that can affect mood. This treatment has been known to have some side effects such as nausea, dizziness, sedation, dissociation, and an increase in blood pressure. Therefore, it should only be administered in a medical office with monitoring and under the supervision of a psychiatrist or physician. Spravato has been shown to be effective in treating individuals with treatment-resistant depression. Although it was initially recommended that Esketamine be used together with other antidepressant medications, the FDA has recently approved the Esketamine nasal spray Spravato to be used as a monotherapy or by itself for treatment-resistant depression. If you haven’t found something that works for you yet, maybe a call to Providence Medical & Infusion Center might be the answer. Sit with one of their doctors to determine the best plan for you. theconnectionsnj.com PAGE 16 DINING OUT HEALTH & WELLNESS choice would you feel better having? · Fried chicken/T-bone steak with macaroni and cheese, ice cream, and cake for dessert or... · Salad with broccoli, mushrooms, chickpeas, carrots, walnuts, lentil soup, and fruit for dessert? Sure, that steak makes some people’s mouths water. Maybe you won’t have the same excitement if you choose the salad. Here’s the scenario. At rst, it was mentally painful for me to go to a steakhouse with 20 people and order a cauli ower steak and salad for dinner. But guess what? Here are a few of the pleasures a er that painful decision. You feel amazing that evening, the next day, and for the rest of your life because you made food your medicine, not the other way around. Believe it or not, a er 30 or more days, your taste buds begin to change, and all the healthy foods start to taste better. You’re fueling your body with healthier choices. (By the way, it’s OK to enjoy cake and certain pleasures once in a while; I’m not against that... I’m just citing an example.) Here’s another bene cial example. I have worked with various training methods in martial arts to increase strength and resiliency over the years. One is rolling on various surfaces like grass, sand, cement, and wood, or weighted steel rings around your arms, slamming into your muscle tissue and bones over time. At rst, there is a little pain, but it goes away a er a while. But here’s the interesting phenomenon that took place. I recently had a bad fall from a ight of stairs with steel rings on my arm. Yet there were no bruises or pain from that fall. A er that, I spoke with a cardiovascular surgeon who explained that all those minor hits over time create microscopic tears in your muscle - bers, and they become stronger and more resilient over time. Most of us are afraid of pain because we don’t realize that there are many lessons to be learned from embracing pain for future pleasure. THE ART OF LIVING By Barry Farber, Diamond Minds e Pain/Pleasure Principle All humans have one thing in common. We are fundamentally guided by the “pain-pleasure principle”, which means we are motivated to seek pleasure and avoid pain. is is understandable. Nobody goes around looking for painful experiences, right? Well, maybe we should. at’s not to say we need to go out and actively search for ways to experience pain. Pain happens to us all, whether it’s an actual physical injury, depression, loss, mental anguish, or needing to make a di cult choice. We need to learn to deal with pain when it inevitably appears in our lives. I was having a conversation with my son when he brought up research. He found that the brain releases dopamine when one has pleasure from drugs or alcohol, but then the brain makes us pay for the pain with depression, withdrawals, and feeling miserable a erward. en he mentioned the Seesaw Metaphor. “If you indulge in pleasure rst (like drugs, alcohol, etc.), dopamine is released, and you’re riding high on the seesaw, but there’s always the pain from withdrawal when your body then craves that dopamine chemical and you go low on the seesaw. Alternatively, you can experience ‘pain’ rst (working out, running, ice bath, reading, getting your mind to do something di cult), and be low on the seesaw, then your brain/ body rewards you a erward with the release of dopamine.” According to recent data, nearly 50% of Americans claim to actively try to eat healthier, with many citing healthy eating as a top priority. However, barriers like cost and time constraints o en hinder their e orts, with a signi cant portion still consuming fast food regularly. So, what is painful about how we eat? It has to do with the choices we make. For instance, let’s say you’re deciding on what to have when you’re out for dinner. What

Ultraviolet (UV) rays from the sun cause skin damage, as well as pose a significant threat to eye health. The best protection for your eyes? Sunglasses with 100% UV protection. Q. Are 100% UV Protection sunglasses really that important? A. Yes! Regardless of the season, it’s crucial to wear “100% UV-rated” sunglasses. Wearing sunglasses without 100% UV protection poses a serious health risk. Sun exposure can increase the risk of developing eye damage, eye growths, cataracts, and certain eye cancers. Fortunately, protecting yourself from the sun is straightforward: simply look for the 100% UV protection label. Q. How do UV rays damage our eyes? A. The American Academy of Ophthalmology (AAO) wants you to know that selecting sunglasses that block 99-100% of UV-A and UV-B radiation is the best way to protect your eyes from the sun’s damaging rays. • UV-A: Can hurt your central vision. It can damage the macula, a part of the retina at the back of your eye. • UV-B: The front part of your eye (the cornea and the lens) absorbs most UV-B rays, but these rays may cause even more damage to your eyes than UV-A rays. Q. Can my eyes get “sunburned”? A. During the summer months, UV exposure is more intense, so wearing 100% UV protective sunglasses is very important. Similar to a sunburn on our skin, too much UV exposure can cause an eye condition called keratitis. It is like a temporary sunburn on the front of your eye, where the cornea gets damaged. It’s painful, but it’s something we can avoid by taking precautions. Q. How do I know if I am making the right choices protecting my eyes? A. If you are worried about potential UV damage, have an eye condition or have any questions about which sunglasses are right for you, visit an ophthalmologist or eye care professional for a comprehensive eye exam. What’s more, be sure to shop at an optical shop with experienced opticians to help you make the proper sunglass selection for your needs. Tips on Choosing Sunglasses • Only buy glasses marked 100% UV protection. Look for labels indicating 99-100% UVA/UVB protection or UV400. • Darker lenses don’t protect better. While very dark lenses may look cool, they do not necessarily block more UV rays. Color doesn’t matter. • Amber, green, or gray lenses do not block more sun but can improve contrast, making it easier to see objects, especially in sports like golf or baseball. • Polarized lenses cut glare, not UV. They can make your eyes more comfortable by reducing the glare coming off reflective surfaces like water or pavement and can make driving and activities like water sports safer, easier, and more enjoyable. • Bigger is better. The more coverage from sunglasses, the less sun damage inflicted on the eyes. Consider buying oversized glasses or wraparound-style glasses, which help cut down on UV entering the eye from the side. • Wear a hat. A broad-brimmed hat can help shield your eyes from the sun’s rays. • Be a smart shopper. Make sure to buy from trusted sources. Inexpensive sunglasses that look like they’re from a big brand might be fake and won’t protect your eyes from the sun’s harmful rays. 400 Main Street, Bedminster • 908-781-2020 Teaneck Eye and Laser Center • 201-833-8333 How to Protect Your Eyes Against Harmful Summer UV Rays Wear 100% UV Protection Sunglasses! Finding out what you can do to prevent arthritis from developing, or reduce its progression, all through natural and lifestyle-based approaches, will help you stay strong and ensure a healthier lifespan with an increased quality of life. If you are looking for a drug-free way to treat arthritis, or help prevent it from developing, a functional medicine doctor can help you enjoy healthy joint function. Functional Medicine is a dynamic approach to assessing, preventing, and treating complex chronic diseases, such as arthritis. By utilizing innovative laboratory testing, we can uncover triggers and in- flammatory responses for arthritis. These specific blood markers of inflammation are not routinely tested but can assess the hidden ‘drivers’ of arthritis. Arthritis is almost always preceded by a period of declining function and health in one or more body systems. For all of us, such dysfunctions are the result of lifelong interactions with our environment, lifestyle, and our genetics. The good news is, with new healthy lifestyle choices and behaviors, many chronic diseases are very manageable and sometimes even preventable! Even people with a genetic predisposition to arthritis can learn to maintain healthy lifestyle choices to reduce their risk, defer the onset, or at least better manage the progression of this condition. The genetic tendencies a person has towards any given disease could, in large part, be influenced by their environment and lifestyle. Unhealthy lifestyle choices such as a lack of exercise, poor diet, and inadequate, stress-tempering techniques to relieve chronic stress can all lead to the development of chronic disease or increase the progression of it. A functional medicine doctor committed to bringing their patients to greater health, focuses on patient education, therapeutic lifestyle choices, and integrative therapies that support the person’s own genetic expression of health. While many people understand the benefits of a healthy lifestyle, they lack the skills and dedication needed to sustain these good habits. Finding a doctor who can provide appropriate interventions and encourage healthful behaviors by educat- ing you with nutritional counseling, physical reconditioning, and stress-tempering techniques to start and maintain these healthy lifestyle habits, will help you prevent arthritis, preserve your function, and stay strong for life. Dr. Sferra is board certified in Chiropractic Medicine and Chiropractic Neurology, a Certified Clinical Nutritionist and is a Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist certified by the National Strength & Conditioning Association. He is the founder and Clinic Director of Natural Medicine & Natural Medicine & Rehabilitation. For more information visit www.NMRNJ.com, or call 908-252-0242. You need to evaluate how you are using your time, as it is limited. But it is not all about how you are using your time to potentiate happiness; it is your perception and interpretation as to how you are using it. Moments of joy can be a fleeting feeling, while unpleasant experiences can be prolonged. Einstein said that “the rate at which time passes depends on your frame of reference.” The true value of how you use your time is your ability to recall times past to use that information to shape your present and your future. Being mindful of how you are spending your time now and making existential decisions as to how to use your time in the future is important. Factors such as attention, emotions, and memory affect our perception of time. In that sense, our perception of how we spend time can be subjective, making time fly or having periods of boredom that are seemingly endless. The present is the time to evaluate your time. With whom are you spending it? Are you spending enough of it on enjoyable activities? Is your time rigid or fluid? Does time run your life, or do you set limits and controls over how you spend your time? Keep in mind a quote by Bil Keane, the well-known cartoonist. “Yesterday’s the past, tomorrow’s the future, but today is a gift. That’s why it’s called the present.” Dr. Michael Osit is a Licensed Psychologist practicing in Warren, and author of The Train Keeps Leaving Without Me: A Guide to Happiness, Freedom, and Self Fulfillment (2016), and Generation Text: Raising Well Adjusted Kids In An Age Of Instant Everything (2008). MIND THE MIND By Dr. Michael Osit Tick-Tock-Not TikTok How Do You Spend Your Time? ime is one of the most precious commodities for every one of us. You can’t create more of it, replace it, regain it once it is gone, predict it, or change it. It is continuous and never stops, and we have no control over it other than how we use it in the moment. It can’t be destroyed, but it certainly can be wasted. You cannot find the time to do something; you can only make the time to work out, clean your garage, or spend time with a loved one. Our very existence is governed by the continuous progression of time. It is an integral part of our lives. In many ways, we measure our lives from one point in time to another, such as birthdays, anniversaries, and scheduled appointments. How do you use your time? Do you spend excessive hours on social media such as TikTok while the clock in your life is going tick-tock? Like T
