This can blunt the definition between the face and neck, especially from the side profile. Fortunately, there are a variety of treatment options, ranging from non-invasive to surgical, that can significantly improve the contour. Non-Invasive Option: Kybella In younger patients with minimal fat under the chin, injectable treatments like Kybella may be ideal. Kybella contains a compound that breaks down fat, which the body then naturally absorbs. It’s FDA-approved for treating submental (under the chin) fullness and typically requires 3–5 sessions spaced 4–6 weeks apart. The procedure takes 15–20 minutes in the office, requires no special prep, and patients can resume daily activities right after. Some swelling is expected as the fat breaks down, but this gradually subsides, resulting in a slimmer profile. If fat extends beyond the chin or is more significant, however, Kybella may not be effective on its own. Minimally Invasive Option: Neck Liposuction and ThermiTight Neck liposuction is a widely used method for reducing fat and improving contour. It’s performed through a small incision under the chin, typically under local or general anesthesia. After injecting the area with a saline solution, a thin rod connected to a suction machine removes excess fat. In younger patients, the skin often retracts well after fat removal. In older individuals, loose skin may persist. In such cases, ThermiTight, a radiofrequency device, can be used through the same incision to heat the underlying skin and stimulate collagen remodeling. This promotes tightening over 1–3 months and can lead to a noticeable improvement in the neck’s appearance. Surgical Option: Neck Lift For more advanced cases involving significant fat and skin laxity, a surgical neck lift is the most comprehensive option. It begins with liposuction to remove excess fat, followed by tightening of the deeper neck muscles with sutures. This helps eliminate vertical bands that may appear with movement. Since cutting skin in the center of the neck leaves visible scars, excess skin is removed via incisions behind and sometimes in front of the ears. Through these incisions, both the skin and underlying muscles are pulled tight and secured, and the remaining skin is trimmed and carefully closed. This dual-layer correction offers dramatic, long-lasting results. Choosing the Right Option Deciding which procedure is best for you can be challenging. That’s why it’s important to consult a surgeon who offers the full range of treatments and can tailor a plan to your needs. In our practice, we provide all of these options and help patients navigate the benefits and limitations of each. Whether you’re looking for a quick fix or a lasting transformation, we’re here to help you make an informed choice and achieve a refreshed, confident appearance.
