I am seventeen years old and currently a senior at Ridge High School. I have been taking art classes my whole life and have loved to draw ever since elementary school art classes. Growing up, art has constantly been a huge part of my life and a safe haven to escape to. Whether it’s creating new paintings, sketching in my notebook, making meaningful gifts for family and friends, or visiting art museums, I always leave room to express myself creatively. I play soccer for my high school and am a part of Ridge High School’s National Honor Society. I am a trained dancer of 14 years in several styles at Gotta Dance and am also a part of my school’s Peer Leader program. I work as a club attendant and lifeguard at PENDRY Natirar as well as a caretaker for children at the Basking Ridge Presbyterian Church. In my free time I enjoy going to the beach, spending time with friends and family, writing and reading, performing on stage, and playing sports. I hope you enjoy all that the Bernards-Ridge edition of our June issue has to o er! With summer beginning and graduation season upon us, it’s the perfect time to celebrate and support our community. Whether you’re shopping for gifts, planning a celebration, or simply enjoying all that the season brings, be sure to check out our Shopping, Beauty & Events section for inspiration and ideas. Patronize our local restaurants, not only for graduation parties and celebrations, but also for casual summer dining. Think of it as a fun night o from cooking in the heat! Your Guide to Summer Dining makes it easy to find an amazing, new local restaurant. In honor of this exciting season, we are proud to feature cover artwork created by talented high school students from our local school districts. Choosing from among the many incredible submissions was no easy task! Each selected artist shares the story behind her work in a short bio—be sure to read about what inspired their creativity. Mia Murphy, our cover artist, is a senior at Ridge High School. Her art is titled Innocent Soles and is inspired by her memories of making her first friends on the school playground. Her use of chalk pastels was chosen to “evoke a sense of nostalgia…to transport the viewer back to those bittersweet sunlit days on the blacktop.” The medium evokes the “soft textures and vibrant colors” she was trying to create. Another talented teen from Ridge High School is the author of our Teen Voice column. Adithya Bharath writes about all the types of fake information you may encounter online and the di erence between misinformation and disinformation. His advice on this timely topic will be helpful for both teens and adults! Anyone can make a di erence—why not start this summer? Summer is a season of renewal and possibility, making it the perfect time to give back and get involved in your community. HOME of Somerset County (Housing Outreach Multifaith Empowerment) is making a powerful impact by supporting individuals and families in need. Read our Community News article and visit homescnj.org to learn more about their inspiring work and to discover how you can be part of the change. As always, when you visit a business you discovered through The Connection, let them know you saw them here and #TellThemWeSentYou! Wishing you a joyful and meaningful start to summer!
