I studied Fine Arts and received a bachelor’s degree in art from Skidmore College. I worked in the graphic design and editorial design fields for many years after graduating college. I returned to school at The College of St. Elizabeth earning a master’s degree in education and my NJ teaching certification. It may sound cliche, but art has always been an important part of my life. As a child I was always drawing and continue to do so, in fact I now teach Drawing at Morristown High School. I have been working as an Art Teacher in the district for almost 20 years. In my free time I paint in oils and watercolor. I am a member of the NJ Art Association, a wonderful group of artists, participating in their exhibits throughout the year. I am honored to say I have earned several awards at the NJAA shows. I live in Chatham with my incredibly supportive husband Jim and son Jimmy. We love to support local musicians and attend local shows often. Jim and Jimmy are both great guitarists, playing in their spare time when they are not protecting the health of the nation with their plumbing business, Power Plumbing! A magnificent butterfly graces our cover. It is an oil painting by Cathy Polcaro of Chatham. The many shades of blue found in the butterfly contrast beautifully with the peaches and pinks that make up the orchids. She originally painted this as a gift for her husband and says, “tropical orchids symbolize love, romance, strength and endurance while the blue morpho butterfly denotes protection and the grantor of wishes.” It is aptly titled, Blue Morpho with Orchids. America turns 250 this summer! To help you celebrate this milestone, our latest Family Adventures column features an extensive guide by Joanne Kleinle. The article includes a curated list of places to visit and ways to celebrate, all while incorporating fascinating historical context. We invite you to read the full column to start planning your commemorative trips and activities. Happy 250th, America! THE BERNARDS-RIDGE CONNECTION PAGE 10 JUNE/JULY/AUGUST 2026 theconnectionsnj.com osing a job is stressful enough. When you’re also paying alimony, the financial pressure can feel crushing, and the path to court relief is not as straightforward as many people assume. In New Jersey, modifying alimony after involuntary job loss requires more than a simple assertion that you’re out of work. Courts want thorough, organized, credible evidence that you are genuinely seeking re-employment. Here’s what that documentation should look like. Build a Paper Trail from Day One The moment your employment ends, start building a detailed record of your job search. New Jersey courts routinely scrutinize whether a payor spouse has done “enough” to find new work, and vague claims won’t survive. Create a comprehensive log, perhaps using a spreadsheet, to capture every step you take, including: • Applications submitted: Record the employers’ names, position titles, dates, and methods of application. • Résumés and cover letters: Keep copies organized by date and recipient. • Recruiter correspondence: Save all emails, texts, or call notes from staffing agencies or headhunters. • Networking activity: Document informational meetings, professional events, and LinkedIn outreach with dates and contacts. • Interview details: Log every interview along with the outcome and any follow-up. • Rejection notices: Preserve any communication indicating your candidacy was not advanced. • Unemployment filings: Retain confirmation of your benefits application and related documentation. Quantity and Quality Both Matter A recent Appellate Division decision, Lopez-Grajales v. Barrios-Godinez (Feb. 2026), illustrates both the risks and opportunities here. The payor submitted tax returns reflecting reduced income over four years and more than 70 pages of handwritten notes documenting weekly job searches. A motion judge found the effort insufficient, but the Appellate Division reversed, holding that at the preliminary “prima facie” stage, an individual need not demonstrate the precise details of every employer contact or interview. Those details, the court held, are properly explored at a plenary hearing. The takeaway? Thorough records substantially improve your odds of clearing the initial threshold, but perfection is not required to get your foot in the courtroom door. The 90-Day Rule and Timing Under New Jersey’s 2014 amendments to the alimony statute, a non-self-employed party who has involuntarily lost a job may not file for modification until 90 days have passed since the loss of employment or the inability to return to prior income levels. After that period, the court may make any relief retroactive to the date of job loss, which is a strong incentive to document your search from day one. The Bottom Line If you’ve lost your job and are paying alimony in New Jersey, treat your job search as both a professional and a legal project. Keep meticulous records, preserve every communication, and organize your documentation so a judge can see immediately that your efforts are real. The bar to obtain a hearing is not insurmountable, but you must walk through the door with credible proof in hand. Shapiro CPAs’ caring and experienced team guides clients to a stress-free tax sea- he first taxes date back to ancient civilizations, such as the Sumerians, who recorded taxes on clay tablets. Perhaps taxes are as old as writing itself. Today, the IRS processes over 160 million individual federal tax returns annually, and the vast majority (over 93%) are filed electronically. Why are taxes so hard to understand? In 1913, the US tax code was 400 pages; now it is estimated to be 70,000+ pages. Albert Einstein is credited with saying, “The hardest thing in the world to understand is income taxes.” Benjamin Franklin coined the famous term “In this world, nothing is certain, except death and taxes.” War and taxes have always been linked to each other. President Lincoln enacted the first US income tax in 1862 to fund the Civil War. Historically, income tax rates have been raised to pay for conflict. In searching the Shapiro CPA archives (pictured), I found this 1938 personal income tax Form 1040(A). This may have been the first year our firm prepared tax returns since it was founded in 1937. One page and color-coded. The tax rate was 4%, prewar and prior to large social programs. Contrast that to top tax rates of 90% to fund WWII, 70% in the 70’s, falling to a low of 28% under President Reagan and hovering between 30-40% since. Of course, there are all sorts of taxes, not just personal income tax. There’s Sales Tax, VAT, Property Tax (NJ viewed as highest in the country), Excise Tax, Gas Tax, Estate-Death Tax, Corporate Tax, Tolls and Tariffs. What’s next...Tax on Tax? SAVOR SUMMER: SHOP, DINE & EXPLORE PAGE 18 theconnectionsnj.com CREATIVE CORNER Seeing Double-Double Knitting By Carolyn Hanson Looking for a challenge? Try using a Doodle Deck by Pacific Co to create a 2-sided, 2-color scarf. One Color Double Knitting Another use of double knitting is to create a flat pocket using straight needles. This is perfect for a small flat Afterthought Pocket as described by Elizabeth Zimmermann in Knitting Without Tears. The setup is similar for 2 colors, except that just one color is used. With this technique, one stitch is knitted and the next is slipped (passed from one needle to the next without knitting). How to Start? - Cast on an even number of stitches using a K1P1 cast on. -Knit one, slip the next stitch as if to purl and repeat; K1, slip 1 purl wise. Turn your work and repeat. Now the previously slipped stitches are knitted, and the knitted stitches are slipped. It takes 2 rows to complete a single full row of knitting. When binding off, separate the knit stitched from the slip stitches onto 2 needles, then bind off using a third needle. A pocket is the result. The effect is a flatter result from knitting in the round. Here are 2 patterns that use this technique. - Angora Baby Booties by Joelle Hoverson - Berlin Scarf by Susanne Muller The scarf is knit in the round, while the fringe is double-knit. ouble knitting is a technique that creates two knit sides of the fabric (Stockinette). There are 2 different purposes. One is to create a 2-color reversible design in stockinette flat or in rounds. The other is for 1-color while knitting in rows, instead of rounds, to create a small pocket. Two Color Double Knitting This fabric is double thick and creates reversible designs with no wrong side. It’s perfect for reversible scarves or hats. The technique requires a pair of stitches; one knitted in Color A and another purled in Color B for each stitch in the design. The knitted stitches form the front, and the purl stitches form the back, making a 2-sided design. The colors used on each side are reversible. For example, a white background with green hearts on one side and a green background with white hearts on the other. Double knitting does not have any floats, meaning extra yarn is carried on the wrong side to allow for the color changes on the front. All color changes happen between the 2 layers. How to start? - Cast on an even number of stitches using 2 colors (Color A, Color B) in an A-B-A-B pattern. - For each pair of stitches, knit with Color A and purl with Color B. To make it easier, think of double knitting as 1x1 ribbing; knit 1 in Color A, purl 1 in Color B. Both colors held in the back when knitting and both colors held in the front when purling, but only knitting or purling with the appropriate color. There is usually a chart showing which color is used for the knit stitches; the partner stitch uses the other color to purl. D June 12-26 eeKS TaSTe of Warren Two Weeks to Dine! It describes the dedication of our farmers-then and now. FFA stands for Future Farmers of America (not to be confused with the FAA or Federal Aviation Administration, which regulates our hot air balloons). This youth group is molding not just our future farmers but future leaders through agriculture education in our local high schools. Check out how the local programs come together in the FFA building. View beautiful landscape exhibits and learn more about the program and their yearly efforts in the classroom. Also visit the 4-H exhibits and attend one of numerous competitions and presentations throughout the week. Help with the 4-H and FFA fundraising efforts by supporting sales of plants, ice cream sandwiches and milk shakes, produce and activities. The Fair is a place where local farmers display antique tractors, animals, hay and more. Locals enjoy participating in the various tractor and truck pulls for spectator viewing. Other main arena events include Bullride Mania Rodeo, Demolition Derbies, and the Action Sports Show featuring BMX, FMX, and MC stunts showcasing some of the most skilled riders in the world! (Additional tickets may be required) Farmers and gardeners can submit their fruits and vegetables, herbs, flowers and more in the Home and Garden building. Many also display canning, handwork, arts and crafts. The Hot Air Balloon Festival has been a favorite addition since 2001. Watch balloon launches, take a tethered ride or full flight and appreciate the beauty of Warren County’s stunning farmland from the air. Access to view the balloons is included in the low Fair admission price: $10 for adults, $5 for children ages 6-12, and free parking, making it one of the most affordable events around. T HEMCaOgNaNz iEnCeTs I O N By Stacia McDonough, President of Independence for Veterans This year, as we celebrate the 250th anniversary of our great nation, “from sea to shining sea,” it is a milestone that also coincides with what would have been the birthday of my late husband, John E. McDonough, a truly extraordinary gentleman. This momentous occasion is made possible by the service, unwavering patriotism, and inconthose who have served, my profound gratitude for them transcends the limitations of mere words. What follows is a small glimpse into the life of an altruistic Renaissance man who inspired my John E. McDonough, a decorated Vietnam veteran, and Sergeant in the United States Air Force, chose to enlist even though he had earned a full football scholarship to Oklahoma State University, which would have exempted him from the draft. During his time “In Country,” he was stationed in three renowned hot zones: Saigon, Nha Trang, and An Loc. To cope with the daily weight of war, John trained in Tae Kwon Do in the evenings with the Korean ROC Army, our allies, and achieved his black belt in just one year—an impressive accomplishment, given that it typically takes at least three. He consistently went above and beyond to support and protect the men in his unit, the 21st Tactical Air Support Squadron, even at great personal risk. Years later, I received a call from one of his fellow airmen who told me that John had saved his life. True to his nature, John had never mentioned it. His humility was as exceptional as his courage. Citations, the Air Force Outstanding Unit Award with a “V” device for valor, and the Republic of Vietnam Gallantry Cross with Palm. In 2008, following his untimely passing, John was posthumously inducted into the Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Holmdel, New Jersey, where a poignant photograph of him from his time in Vietnam remains on permanent display. The contributions of our former servicemen and women are immeasurable. Debts that can never be repaid. We may not all agree on our nation’s policies, however, after having the privilege of working alongside veterans for more than two decades, I graciously request we unite on this: the kindness, compassion, and dignity they have so rightly earned. On any given night, there are approximately 40,000 homeless Veterans sleeping on the streets in the U.S. Proceeds from fundraising will be used to supply permanent housing for our homeless Veterans at no cost to them. Kindly join us in honoring those who served to protect our great nation and our freedoms. Our Veterans should never have to sleep on the streets or go hungry. Please consider joining us!
