THE BERNARDS-RIDGE CONNECTION PAGE 12 theconnectionsnj.com NOVEMBER/DECEMBER 2022/JANUARY 2023 As we prepare to celebrate the holidays, many pet owners naturally want to include their beloved four-legged and furry family members in the festivities. This can be great fun for all, but here are just a few tips to keep your pet safe, healthy and happy during the holidays. When You Have to Travel: Holiday travel can be stressful for pets. Prior to travel make sure that your pet has had a recent veterinary examination and is healthy enough to travel. Some pets also benefit from prescription medications to reduce anxiety and motion sickness which you may want to discuss with your veterinarian. Also, make sure that your contact information is up-to-date on all pet ID tags and with microchip registries. Most pets go missing or get injured during the holidays either by jumping out of vehicles before someone has a good handle on their leash or because doors are left open more frequently as guests come and go. Even pets that might not usually attempt to escape the home through an open door may be more likely to flee due to anxiety brought about during busy holiday gatherings. Holiday Decorations: Many holiday decorations pose a threat to pet health and safety. Glittery, sparkly and shiny ornaments are particularly attractive to cats and may be accidentally ingested. Glass ball ornaments on a Christmas tree can be easily mistaken for balls by dogs who carry or chew on them, leading to ingestion of shards of glass. Curious pets, especially cats, may be prone to investigate or knock over holiday candles, particularly when they are lit. Strands of lights and the extra electrical cords that often accompany these and other holiday decorations may also be tempting for cats and some dogs to chew on. To reduce the risk of electrical shock or fire, you should unplug these prior to leaving the home or ensure that pets are securely locked out of areas with candles and cords when not under direct supervision. When Gifts Are Exchanged: Festive gift wrap with bows and ornaments can draw attention to holiday gifts and as a result, may be destroyed or ingested by pets. Curling ribbon is particularly attractive to cats, however, if ingested can cause severe intestinal damage due to its sharp edges and propensity to get caught in the intestinal tract. Also, be careful not to leave tasty holiday treats within reach of pets. Growing up, my elderly grandmother used to wrap boxes of chocolate for each of us and put them under the tree with tags signed by Santa. Despite reminders not to do so, Grandma commonly forgot. Our family’s Westie never failed to sniff out those boxes and eagerly consume their contents. Chocolate toxicity and subsequent emergency treatment practically became an annual tradition for her. Thankfully we always got her to the ER in time, but the outcome could have been grave had we not. Later in life, while working many holiday emergency shifts as a veterinarian I found Grandma wasn’t the only one. I also found myself on more than one occasion performing surgery to repair serious bite wounds on family dogs who had gotten into fights over treats. One particular case involved owners who had purchased a three-foot-long rawhide bone complete with a big red bow for both of their dogs to share. The size of the bone was more than enough for both dogs, but the owners somewhat naively expected the dogs would actually share. Although the dogs got along extremely well on a daily basis, sharing such a high value treat was way too much to expect of them. Even in a normally harmonious home, pets should be safely separated by gates or in crates where they can safely enjoy special treats without the threat of competition. When People Food is Shared: It’s hard to resist sharing holiday meals with our furry family members when their keen noses have sniffed them out and longing puppy dog eyes look up at you from beside the table. But many holiday foods are toxic to our pets including chocolate, onions, raisins, macadamia nuts, yeast dough, and fruit pits. Given that most pets eat the same thing every day, sudden introduction of any new food can lead to stomach upset. Fatty meats and cooked bones can also be particularly dangerous and can lead to vomiting and diarrhea, pancreatitis, and even intestinal obstruction, which can be potentially life-threatening. If you really want to share a holiday meal with your pet, it is best to cook them their own lean, white meat skinless, boneless, turkey or chicken breast and serve a very small portion of this with a small amount of rice, boiled white potato or sweet potato without butter. They’ll stay healthy, enjoy their special holiday meal and most importantly, enjoy their time with you. At KIND Veterinary Care Center, we are committed to providing exceptional and compassionate lifelong care for our patients. As a full-service veterinary hospital, we offer comprehensive and convenient medical, dental, and surgical services with a personal touch. THE BERNARDS-RIDGE CONNECTION PAGE 14 theconnectionsnj.com NOVEMBER/DECEMBER 2022/JANUARY 2023 Many times, owners look online for answers to their dog’s behavioral issues asking vague questions and end up trying to solve a problem they misdiagnosed in the first place. It is important to speak with a professional to help you dig for details so you can work as a team to tackle the issue from the root. Fear, as a blanket term, is acquired in dogs in many ways and for many different reasons. It starts even before they are born: Genetics - Poor selective breeding or natural selection can set a dog up for more challenges than usual. Maternal stress while the puppy is still in the womb -This means the puppy is floating in stress hormones. The behavior of the mother while raising the puppy - Puppies raised by a mother who is exhibiting stress-related behaviors are more likely to behave that way too. It is important to note that these issues may have developed even before you got your hands on your new puppy. Once in human care (by the new owners or by the human caretakers of the litter), the puppy should start to be socialized. A lack of socialization within the critical socialization period (puppies, 8-16 weeks old), results in even more stress towards everything new. Although socialization has the word ‘social’ in it, it does not mean playing with littermates or other puppies in the neighborhood. Trainers love to educate clients on the true definition of socialization and how to execute it properly to have a happy puppy that is neutral in all kinds of environments. Our last candidate for developing fear in puppies is bad experiences - This coincides with socialization because we can expose our puppies to all kinds of stimuli, but, if the puppy does not feel happy while experiencing these new things, we are setting them up for feeling uneasy and scared. Behaviors have roots! If you keep cutting the weed, it will still come back and grow. This analogy is not only relevant to fear-related behaviors. It can be applied to any behaviors your puppy or dog is exhibiting that you find problematic. It is important to help our dogs grow by nurturing their roots and learning how to take care of them (mentally and physically). Sometimes we think that all that plants need is ample water and sunlight, but in fact, some don’t need that at all and end up suffering because of our general assumptions. Same with dogs! They are all different and have different needs. So now maybe you know why your dog is fearful. How do you address it? At My Dogs’ Got Class, we first address emotions not behaviors. As certified dog trainers, we would first ask you to paint us a picture of your dog so we can use our skills to deduce the cause. Sometimes, the cause is rooted very deeply and it is important to address it as such. We would need as much information as possible to be able to help your dog overcome these fear-related feelings and behaviors. We always help clients ask themselves why their dog is doing something unfavorable, instead of solely addressing the problem behavior that is being displayed. Speak with a professional at My Dogs’ Got Class so we can help you help your dog! Visit mydogsgotclass. com for more information. Is Your Dog Shy, Scared, Nervous, And Anxious? What can you do? THE BERNARDS-RIDGE CONNECTION PAGE 15 theconnectionsnj.com NOVEMBER/DECEMBER 2022/JANUARY 2023 Divorce requires the consent of both spouses: FALSE If one spouse does not want to divorce, they do not have a choice if their spouse wants to dissolve the marriage. The failure of one spouse to accept the reality of the divorce can increase the costs for both parties. Courts determine alimony with a set of guidelines or a formula: FALSE A court determines alimony by reviewing the facts in conjunction with New Jersey’s alimony law and its 13 factors. Parties can privately agree in a settlement to calculate alimony however they deem appropriate, the court is not permitted to apply a specific formula. A parent can waive his or her right to child support: FALSE The right to child support belongs to the child, not to the parent. While parents may agree in a settlement agreement that there will be no child support, a court will ultimately have to determine what is in the best interests of the child should an issue later arise. All assets are divided equally in equitable distribution: FALSE There is no specific formula for equitably distributing an asset. The law provides a court with 16 factors to consider when making such determinations. Most cases go to trial: FALSE In fact, more than 98% of cases settle before trial. The court system strongly encourages privately negotiated settlements between spouses through a variety of means, including by encouraging mediation and holding settlement conferences. Parents have no obligation to pay for college: FALSE Parents in New Jersey have an obligation to pay for a child’s college education and related expenses. The law requires that a court consider multiple factors when determining a parent’s obligation to contribute to college expenses. You can provide for child support and child custody in premarital agreements: FALSE Provisions regarding child support and child custody in premarital agreements are void as a matter of public policy. Domestic violence requires physical violence: FALSE Domestic violence can include conduct that does not involve physical violence, such as harassment, stalking, threats of violence or placing someone in a situation where they fear for their safety. Mothers always get custody of the children: FALSE The custody statute is gender-neutral and decisions regarding custody are based upon the best interests of the children in light of 16 statutory factors. However, to the extent that one parent was a stay-at-home parent while the other parent worked full time, the stay-at-home parent may have a practical advantage when it comes to residential custody. If one spouse commits adultery, it can have a significant outcome on the case: FALSE While adultery is still an existing fault-based cause of action to obtain a divorce, it will rarely impact a case beyond the initial pleading, other than a possible claim for dissipation of marital assets. Festive Inspirations For Your Best Season Ever! SHOPPING BEAUTY EVENTS PRESENTING WHERE TO WINE & DINE

theconnectionsnj.com HOLIDAY CHEER PAGE 18 Champagne, and sparkling wines, are arguably some of the most celebratory beverages on earth. Just the simple act of popping the cork on a bottle of bubbly, whether it is a bottle of value-priced Cava from Spain or a great old vintage from its namesake region in France, always seems to make the moment that much more festive. Versatile and food-friendly, these wines are the perfect starter to a great meal, great with a wide range of appetizers, and with the right menu and chef, work wonderfully throughout the dinner. Champagne, after all, is wine. Yet not all that bubbles is Champagne. So what sets these special and magnificent wines apart from the rest of the sparkling wines in the world? The first is what the French call terroir, a term that encompasses all of the elements of climate, soil, exposure, and sun that affect how grapes ripen in a specific region or vineyard. True Champagne must come from the region of the same name. It is one of the most northerly wine regions in the world - if it were in North America it would be on the same latitude, the 49th parallel, as Winnipeg, Canada. The region’s cool climate means that the grapes are naturally tart and very high in acidity at harvest. The vineyards are mainly on gentle slopes composed of layers of tertiary soils a few feet deep (washed down over millions of years from the Isle de France, a geological formation that stretches west to the English Channel that also helps moderate the worst of the Channel weather), overlying deep chalk sub-soils. The combination of the cool climate and the geology of the region are in large part responsible for Champagne’s inimitable crisp, complex, racy character. The second factor is the grapes: Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, and Pinot Meunier are the major permitted varieties. In this cool climate, they ripen differently than in warmer regions like Burgundy, California, or Oregon. The cool climate allows a long ripening with much lower sugars and higher acidities, in fact so much so that ordinary still wine made here is often so tart that it is actually unpleasant to drink. Enter the third factor, the method of fermentation, the Methode Champenoise. The magic of Champagne, the bubbles being the most obvious, is created when the wines go through a second fermentation in the bottle, a labor-intensive and time-consuming process that is required for all true Champagne. Less expensive bubblies are often made in stainless steel for their secondary fermentation - a far less labor-intensive and costly process, with a little trade-off in quality. In the world of Champagne, the big brands dominate the market, offering mostly good solid quality, but the buzz in the trade is all about the small grower, estate grown, and bottled wines. These boutique properties often sell for the same or less than the big brands and offer wonderful pure expressions of the villages and sub-regions where they are grown, rather than the “house style” of the big brands. There are also sparkling wines made all over the world that are far less expensive than those from the Champagne region - but be careful - not all rise to the occasion. Crémant, made in the Champagne methode from regions such as the Savoie (Eugene Carrel $19), Burgundy (Bruno Dangin $27) or Alsace (Barmes Buecher $37) are great affordable Champagne alternatives. Cava from Spain can be terrific but look for smaller growers like Bertha - Cava Brut Nature 2019 ($15), clean, dry, and refreshing with fine bubbles. Follow the same advice for Prosecco - we like Bele Casal from the Asolo region in northern Italy ($18), or for a fantastic dry sparkling rose try Ettore Germano Rosanna ($30), made from the Nebbiolo grape in the Barolo region. This holiday season makes it a point to add a little sparkle to your life - but don’t forget about the rest of the year! A little bubbly will make even life’s simple moments that much more special - Cheers! theconnectionsnj.com HOLIDAY CHEER PAGE 20 By Kaylynn Ebner Guest House and LULU Kids Style Bring Unique Shopping Experience to Basking Ridge Guest House Home Decor has expanded in time for its one-year anniversary. With a move to a larger space to include LULU Kids Style, the partners and sisters, Desiree Mazzarese and Stephanie Ossorio also developed a new shopping concept: The Shoppes at Finley. With plans to host pop-up events to support local businesses, The Shoppes at Finley will be the area’s go-to shop to find unique gifts and experience new vendors. “I’ve been fortunate to have friends who are local business owners support me with Guest House and now LULU Kids, so paying it forward is our goal with The Shoppes at Finley,” says CEO and owner, Mazzarese. Guest House serves shoppers who are looking for something different when styling their home or buying gifts. The 750-square-foot store is filled with unique bookends, beautiful coffee table books, modern pieces for entertaining, elegant candleholders and candles, fine bone china, and sophisticated home decor. “The idea is to offer eclectic, unique, sophisticated items that you wouldn’t find in a big box store,” says Mazzarese. “I’m constantly looking for new brands and collections to add.” Throughout Guest House, you’ll find items at price points from high-end buys to less-expensive pieces. Now, shoppers can also head to LULU Kids Style for stylish kids’ clothing and accessories. “As moms of two kids each, we wanted a place that moms could go to for their kids’ gifts or birthday parties they were attending, that was local enough to fit into their busy schedules,” says Ossorio, co-owner, LULU Kids Style. LULU Kids Style features modern brands like Suburban Riot, Vintage Havana, and Chaser Kids that use recycled materials, organic cotton, and soft fabrics. LULU Kids Style also has colorful stationary items for tweens and lots of accessories like stickers, hats, clothing patches, and bags. The expansion of Guest House with LULU Kids was a natural evolution for Mazzarese and Ossorio. Mazzarese had been doing marketing and communications when she decided to open the store in September 2021. A little while later, she and her sister got the idea to offer more. “We were just chatting about how much fun it would be to have a kids store with clothes and accessories you wouldn’t find in every store, especially since there are no places to shop for kids in the area,” says Mazzarese. Offering fun, functional, and stylish clothes for kids was really important to Ossorio. “I’ve also been drawn to fun, unique buys. And now as a mom with kids in the Bernards School District, I wanted to offer things that are comfortable yet stylish— and that you don’t see everywhere,” she states. A few months later, the sisters used a back section of Guest House for the new kids’ offerings. “We saw shoppers gravitating toward that section because there’s nothing like it in the area,” Ossorio states. The section has expanded with a permanent footprint in the store. Guest House and LULU Kids Style are located at 52 S. Finley Avenue in Basking Ridge, with online stores at guesthousenj. com and lulukids.style. theconnectionsnj.com HOLIDAY CHEER PAGE 23 Starting with a partnership, the Schultz family now owns 100% of the business upon the retirement of the Blausteins in 2021. The Schultz family has a rich history in the industry that spans 4 generations. The first founding generation originated in Berlin, Germany in 1913. Fearing the rise of Hitler and the Nazi movement, the second generation fled to the United States and settled in Newark, New Jersey on Bergen Street. The store was moved to the Short Hills area in the early 1960s where it remains to this day run by the third generation, Robert and Christine Schultz, and their son Ashley of the fourth generation. Being in business for over 100 years gives a clear perspective of changes in the style and mindset of the consumer. From stoles and capelets worn with gloves; Persian Lamb coats with matching hats; the glamorous fox coats of the 1980s; the Schultzes have SEEN IT ALL and DONE IT ALL. Styles come and go and sometimes return. Black tie affairs are few and far between, if not non-existent. Work attire has gone from “casual Fridays” to “casual every day”. To stay competitive in the fashion industry, a successful company needs to “roll with the trend”. The luxury outerwear business has evolved into just that. The Schultz’s showroom which once consisted of only full-length coats that were of a serious nature to be worn with a gown has now transformed into jackets and kneelength garments to be worn with jeans or leggings. Vibrant colors and combing of materials are what is in vogue today. Cashmere, leather, goose down, alpaca, shearling, as well as traditional furs curated in modern colors and silhouettes, dominate demand in the market today. The Schultz & Blaustein clientele continued to search for statement outerwear garments to join their winter wardrobe. The styles may change, but that fact remains true today. Longevity such as this does not happen by chance. The Schultz Family excels in customer service and providing the best quality for a fair price. They have purchased or have been recommended for future service by over a dozen furriers who have retired over the years. The service end of their business has grown to over 9000 coats in storage. All work is performed on sight by old-world craftsmen. The company prides itself on its creativity and design insights when restyling outdated garments. Bring in an old, tired garment and watch as it is reimagined into something current and relevant. Whether it be to purchase a new item, remodel an old coat, have something cleaned, or stored for the summer, or simply sew a button, the Schultz family welcomes all. theconnectionsnj.com HOLIDAY CHEER PAGE 27 If you’re in the mood for a trendy personal gift, head to Downtown Bernardsville and pay a visit to The Rebecca Collection. Easily accessible (across from the movie theater, with ample parking nearby), the store has been in town “forever.” Just ask owner, Sharon Markowitz about her loyal following of customers and she will tell you all about who comes in with their children, who is getting married, and who needs to order a custom-made gift basket for a friend or relative. “Customers come in with their babies to show us how much they’re growing up,” she said, adding, “we have always treated our customers like family.” The store is named after her mom, Rebecca, who “everyone loved” and in keeping with the family tradition, Sharon’s daughter, Bari, works with her and manages the day-to-day operations. “Bari used to work in advertising and never thought she would end up here but did and loves it. She’s a mini-me!” Bari does all of the social media and marketing and will one day take over the store. “It is our happy place. People come here and they just want to feel good and by coming here, even just for a few minutes, it makes them happy,” Sharon noted. A good portion of Sharon’s day consists of helping customers and creating gift baskets. Sharon noted that all her inventory is “picked out with love. You might have a great product but need the passion behind it.” she remarked. The inventory is always changing, which gives the store an exciting and fresh feel. She is constantly re-inventing herself with what type of inventory to have in the store. During Covid, she noticed a ton of young people with babies moving into town and also people re-decorating their homes since they spent so much time there. “People’s perspectives changed. Now parents who thought they would never have another baby did, or people who never thought they would get married, did.” Sharon hears all of her customers’ stories and “kids who bought t-shirts from me as a kid are now graduating college and coming back to buy adult items!” she laughed. “Peoplewant to feel better after going through so much these past few years. There have been some good stories, some bad stories, and people just feeling anxious,” she noted. “They want to come in and just feel good and take care of themselves.” Open seven days a week with gifts for everyone: home accessories, pampering items, chocolates, decorative pillows and signs (Bedminster, Morristown, Bernardsville, etc. signs), children’s, men’s, women’s clothing, accessories, and more. Sharon locally delivers (and ships nationwide) custom-made gift baskets for every occasion and finds many realtors enjoy popping into the store to pick up a decorative basket once their clients close on a home. With party favors, holiday orders, and their concierge service, people love to call The Rebecca Collection for their opinions on gifts, and life in general. theconnectionsnj.com HOLIDAY CHEER PAGE 28 By Jason Chupick You’re Not in Kansas Anymore to focus on curation and personal styling this Holiday season! Upon entering You’re Not In Kansas Anymore boutique this fall, shoppers will be greeted with a revamped showroom and an explosion of color and fun. Merchandising at this Chester mainstay is done so one sees the cohesiveness in collections that encourages the choice of an entire outfit – for perfect extra color. You could categorize the boutique’s collection as edgy while also being accessible, approachable, and not ephemerally trendy. A number of factors are adding up to the renewed buzz for “Kansas” lately: perhaps the change of seasons, the anticipation for a Holiday season with the cautious return to gatherings, parties, and the office. Talk to regular customers and you’ll find women seeking unique pieces–You’re Not In Kansas Anymore is one of those places that comes to mind when people say “where did you get that?” It is so important to have style - not trends in clothing and accessories - that will stand the test of time. Owner Barbara Chupick helps women style their outfits in the most flattering styles and colors for all occasions. A lot of the store’s stock is sourced from small design houses, generally from new young designers. “I have a special place in my heart for emerging designers. I helped so many students put together their portfolios when I was a teacher, and many of them went on to design careers after attending schools like FIT, Parsons, and Pratt.” As covered by an earlier edition of Bernards-Ridge Connection, You’re Not in Kansas Anymore reacted and adapted to the fashion industry’s disruption during COVID-19, and continues to run on a more nimble model – working with designers on shorter runs which makes for exclusive displays and staying in touch with clients via its email newsletter (the store’s favored mode of communication). Containing first looks, snippets about trends and pop culture, and invitations, Chupick boasts of an extensive list of loyal readers to her weekly note. Clearly, people want clothing and jewelry that make their lives the way they wish they were. Store hours: Thursday - Saturday, 11:00 am -5:30 pm. Sundays, 12:00 pm - 5:30 pm.
