From the kids to the grandparents, the whole family will enjoy this holiday event. Please see the article for more details. Our cover art was painted by local artist, Eric Kahn. He says his oil painting “was inspired by the impressionist painters of the 19th and 20th centuries who worked along the Delaware River towns of New Jersey and Pennsylvania.” His depiction, Winter Walking on the Bank, was the perfect choice for the holiday issue. We hope this November Holiday issue fills your heart with joy and anticipation for the festivities ahead. Whatever holiday you celebrate during this time, we wish you a winter season brimming with love, laughter, and cherished memories. Embrace the magic of this extraordinary time, and may it bring you closer to those who matter most. Happy holidays from all of us here at The Connection Magazines. The selection process was difficult given the abundance of issues created by evolving tax rules, fastpaced capital markets, and post-pandemic economic issues. The list was created by my 40 years of experience and client interactions. Interest Rates Interest rates have climbed sharply from historic lows to near-cycle highs. Cash and fixed income now has a real return. The increases in interest rates and resulting yields have created opportunities for savers and investors. Money markets now provide rates of about 5%; however, they are taxable and subject to re-investment risk. Currently, I am encouraging qualified individuals in higher tax brackets to consider using a barbell approach of short-term United States Treasury Bonds (UST) and Mid Term Municipal Bonds (Muni). Using the 1-year UST as a proxy, the yield is about 5.4%. USTs are highly liquid and are State tax exempt. On the back end of the barbell, Muni bonds can be both Federal and State tax-exempt. For example, using an effective yield of say 4%, assuming a combined tax rate of 50%, would result in a taxable equivalent yield of 8%. Duration would help manage reinvestment risk and potentially provide the opportunity for gain; in the event the Federal Reserve Bank was to eventually cut rates. Higher interest rates create the motivation to allocate a bit more of a diversified portfolio to cash and fixed income. Autos Have you tried to purchase or lease a new car recently only to receive sticker shock? Low inventory, increased prices, and higher finance rates have significantly increased the cost. When acquiring that new car, consider the increased equity in your existing vehicle, for trade-in or available fixed purchase option, if leased. Imagine helping save the planet and your wallet, via an electric vehicle (EV). Purchasers of a qualified EV are eligible for a Federal Tax Credit of up to $7,500 subject to income limitations. Further qualified EVs are exempt from NJ Sales Tax. Leasing an EV could be a smart choice in that some manufacturers will pass the federal credit, without regard to income limitations. Further, the price of EVs is expected to decline over time and the technology to advance, as such the ability to return the vehicle at lease end would be of value. Many people seek out these options when stubborn health conditions are not improving with conventional medicine or to boost their overall immune system and wellness. Did you know that the same therapies are now available to your pets? What is holistic pet care? Holistic pet care begins by considering the whole animal, including the mind, emotions, physical body, and microbiome instead of focusing on treating just the symptoms that your pet may be experiencing. Holistic veterinarians are concerned with everything that a pet is exposed to through diet, their environment, medications and supplements, household cleaners and chemicals, vaccinations, and more. All these factors can impact your pet’s health and longevity. In addition, holistic veterinarians utilize a broad spectrum of treatment options, from conventional to alternative, to maximize your pet’s wellness. Pet owners often seek out holistic options when persistent conditions such as allergies, auto-immune diseases, cancer, or common diseases of aging such as arthritis are not responding to conventional approaches. Acupuncture, for example, can decrease inflammation and improve circulation to help with a variety of health conditions, while stem cell therapy can be useful for osteoarthritis and in the repair of bone and ligament issues. Ozone therapy introduces ozone into your pet’s body to stimulate the immune system. Ozone has strong antioxidant and anti-aging effects and can assist with a wide range of conditions including cardiovascular disease, complications from diabetes, infections such as Lyme Disease, and cancer. Each of these therapies can be used in conjunction with other conventional or integrative therapies or on their own. There are many benefits to pursuing a holistic approach for your pet’s care. Some of these include a healthier immune system, an expanded range of treatment options, a reduction of pain and stress, and maximizing the quality of life and longevity of your pet. In addition to offering popular chiropractic adjustments and acupuncture to improve wellness and reduce pain and inflammation, Longevity Veterinary Cen- Longevity Veterinary Center’s team of integrative doctors also offers stem cell therapy, thermography, cold laser therapy, ozone therapy, homeopathy, microbiome replacement therapy (MBRT), herbal remedies, non-anesthetic dental (NAD), and options such as ovary-sparing spays for your pets. They want simplicity in all aspects of their lives. Exhausted from the lack of service and quality at big box stores and the isolation of shopping online, shoppers are flocking to smaller local businesses. And why not? A well-run, local business will offer lower prices, better quality, and superior service employing devoted sales help that will support you through every aspect of your purchase and take the time to get to know you and your sartorial needs. Additionally, shopping at a small business that specializes in a particular type of product yields significantly higher customer satisfaction and a return rate often less than 1%, as compared to online clothing returns which are 25%. Shopping online has its conveniences, but it’s far from the best option. Let’s be honest, what could be better than actually seeing the product, feeling the fabric, trying things on with the advice of a helpful sales person, combined with the one stop shopping in our in-store alteration department. No hassles of trial and error returns that inevitably come with online shopping. At Adams Fine Clothing, every customer matters. Our reputation thrives on customers sharing their shopping experience and our ability to motivate them to return often. Here are some of the fashion trends you will find at our store this season: You Autumn Know by Now Temperatures are dropping and our minds are subconsciously shifting to those fall clothes. At Adams, we’re excited to showcase our fall collection, which focuses on modern styles, versatility and comfort at great values. Suiting: Peaking Your Interest New and modern trim silhouettes suiting in shades of navy blue and gray are the most popular choices; we’re seeing a slight tweak that brings it into 2023-a peak lapel. A peak lapel of moderate width can bring a sharp sophistication to your FASHIONFLASH Falling into Fashion By David Marzano Manager, Adams Fine Clothing and Tuxedos suited up looks and set you apart in a sea of notch lapels. Sport Coats: Soft but Sexy During the pandemic tailoring took a major turn. Jackets were being made softer, with no canvas or shoulder pads. This resulted in a coat that is as comfortable as a sweater, but still looks great with a tie. And at Adams, that’s the kind of versatility we can get behind. Blue and earth tones are still popular, but this season’s most popular colors are purple and green (not together though). Pants: Darken that Denim In spring we had two words for you: Five Pockets. And we still have those two words for you this fall! Five pockets in denim or cotton twill are that perfect in between pants that look great with a chunky sweater and boots or a sport coat and dress shoes. Our favorite colors this year are charcoal gray, navy blue and chocolate brown! Sweaters: Knitted Out When it comes to sweaters, I bet you already have all the basics-merino wool, cotton, maybe even some cashmere. This season pick up something special like Royal Alpaca. A sustainably-harvested wool that accounts for 1-3% of Alpaca products worldwide, this lightweight, yet durable fabric keeps you warm when you’re cold and reverses property and actually cools you down when indoors. Whether in a ¼ zip, cardigan or classic crew neck, you’ll never want to take it off. Outerwear: Best of Both Worlds Outerwear is confusing. The styles are plentiful which isn’t the best for the modern guy. At Adams, we firmly believe a guy doesn’t need a lot of choices, he needs the right choices. There’s only two pieces guys need until it’s time to take out the topcoats: the vest and the shacket. A lightweight vest can be easily layered over a sweater or a sport coat and can be just as easily folded up and stored for those sunny fall afternoons. Since the pandemic the word “hybrid” is in everyone’s vocabulary and the shacket is the ultimate hybrid. Lighter than a jacket but heavier than a shirt, this is the most versatile casual piece for the fall. You can wear it with joggers and a tee shirt for a coffee run or wear it with jeans and flannel for a more rugged look. See for yourself the difference a special men’s clothing store can make: Adams Fine Clothing & Tuxedo 1275 Springfield Ave., New Providence, NJ

It is not just the chestnuts roasting on the open fire or Jack Frost nipping at your nose that is getting us into the holiday spirit. The German Christmas Market is coming to town! From Friday, December 1st through Sunday, December 3rd, the Sussex County Fairgrounds will be transformed into an Alpine village bursting with local artisans selling their wares, festive entertainment, and lots of hearty food and drink to ward off the chill. Whether or not you celebrate Christmas, this is the perfect way for any family to kick off the holiday season. So many of the holiday traditions that are held dear all over the world-from decorating Christmas trees with ornaments and tinsel to using Advent calendars and singing Silent Night-originated in Germany. Even dear old Santa Claus made his first appearance there! The traditional Weihnachtsmarkts-or Christmas markets - that are found throughout Germany leading up to Christmas embody the flavors, traditions, sights and sounds of the season. In 2001, a handful of dedicated volunteers had a vision. They wanted to bring one of these traditional Christmas markets to life in Sussex County and the German Christmas Market German Christmas Market of New Jersey was born on the boardwalk of Lake Mohawk in Sparta. It has grown every year since with more vendors, more food, and more entertainment. For the past three years it has been held in the Sussex County Fairgrounds. There is something for everyone at the German Christmas Market. As soon as you walk on to the grounds, you are transported to a winter wonderland. Music fills the air together with the smells of warm inviting food. The beautiful hills of Sussex County are the backdrop for the traditional small wooden red and white huts that are reminiscent of the markets that are held every year in most German villages and attract tourists from around the globe. The German Christmas Market German Christmas Market hosts over 150 vendors who are each carefully vetted by the committee for quality and to make sure that there is not overly duplicative merchandise. Many of the vendors offer imported goods from Europe that cannot be found anywhere else like the vendor with pottery from Spain. Some vendors offer handmade goods like the local artist who sells woodcarved furniture. If shopping is not your thing, there is still so much to see and do at the German Christ- German Christmas Market. You can wrap yourself in a blanket and hop on a horse-drawn carriage. Be sure to visit the enormous display hosted by the Pocono Mountain Railway Club. This impressive exhibit of model trains fills an entire room and will transport even the most jaded adult into the magical world of the Polar Express. For children, there are pony rides and a petting zoo. This year, for the first time, there will be a carousel for kids of all ages to enjoy. Of course, Santa and Mrs. Claus are scheduled to return so it is a great opportunity to get that holiday card photo. Mrs. Claus and her elves will be riding around the market and will host a story time for the kids. There is a wide range of entertainment from local and professional musicians in the Performance Hall throughout all three days. Check out the entertainment schedule on the website for more information. The German Christmas Market German Christmas Market is still 100% run by a committed band of volunteers. It is a nonprofit foundation with the express purpose of creating a community event that celebrates the Christmas holiday and raises funds to give back to the community. Since its inception, it has donated almost half a million dollars to local charities! In the spirit of the season, you can know that your support of the event will help those in need in our local community. For more information on vendors, events & schedules, check out the market website at www.germanchristmasmarketnj.org. It will be open Friday (12/1) and Saturday (12/2) from10 am -9 pm and Sunday (12/3) from 10 am-5 pm. PAGE 27 THE BERNARDS-RIDGE CONNECTION NOV 2023-JAN 2024 theconnectionsnj.com Whether it is with the other parent, a grandparent, another family member, or a local child welfare agency, there is nothing worse than being in a legal battle regarding who gets to see and care for your children. Keep Your Custody Lawyer Fully Informed Your custody lawyer needs to know all there is to know about you, your children, and others involved in the case. They need contact information for the key people who interact with your children, including medical providers, educators (past and present), principals, school counselors, caregivers, people living with or frequently visiting them, concerned neighbors, friends and their parents, and supportive family members. Second, the attorney needs a firm handle on the children’s schedules, including when they are with you, the other parent, or a caregiver; when they attend school, camp, or child care; and when they see the doctor or dentist. Finally, your lawyer needs to have all pertinent documentation, including three years of medical and school records; a calendar of associated visits and calls; and e-mails, phone logs, and letters to and from other adults regarding the custody and general well-being of the children. You must also provide all documents and information regarding this case and any other custody, divorce, or abuse action involving you and/ or the others involved. Put Your Best Foot Forward Custody evaluations are critical. Divorce courts give considerable weight to an evaluator’s recommendations. It is important to know what to expect and to prepare accordingly. DO: • Arrive on time for the custody evaluation interview. • Dress neatly and conservatively. • Be honest. The custody evaluator will likely seek to verify your statements. If the evaluator uses psychological testing, answer honestly. The tests are designed to detect untruths and defensiveness. • Be sincere. The custody evaluator can usually detect embellishment and insincerity. • Listen to the evaluator’s questions and answer directly and succinctly. If you’re unsure, ask for clarification. Provide additional documentation that is requested promptly or explain your concerns about being able to obtain the requested information. • Demonstrate empathy, appropriate guideline setting, support for the relationship between your children and their other parent, appropriate interaction with your former spouse, and that you are sheltering your children from conflict. DO NOT: • Speak badly of your spouse/partner or their family unless the custody evaluator specifically asks you to enumerate perceived problems. Do not prep your children to criticize the other parent. • Make threatening comments about your spouse/partner or anyone else. • Harass the evaluator by phone or in person. • Allow a new spouse or significant other to get involved in the dispute. Custody cases are long and emotional. It’s OK to show emotion. Relax and let the best aspects of your personality shine. Present yourself as reasonable and demonstrate that you place the concerns of your children first. Custody evaluators recognize that people are under stress and take this into account. By communicating effectively with your lawyer, and focusing on what is best for your children, you can, with confidence, resolve the matter at hand. Far Hills Country Day School (Far Hills) is a Preschool through Grade 8 Independent School nestled in the hills of Somerset County, New Jersey. Sitting on an expansive 54-acre campus, with woodlands, a Ropes Course, a Mountain Bike Trail, and a pond provides students with opportunities to learn beyond the walls of the classroom. Students also have access to athletic fields, a state-of-the-art performing arts center, and cutting-edge science and STEAM labs. This extension of the educational environment fosters independence and contributes to excellence in academics, emotional self-awareness, and distinction in the arts and athletics. Falcon Pride Point: At the pond, students study cattails, milkweed, and duckweed in situ. Athletics and physical education focus on building a strong body and strong character by teaching how to win gracefully and lose with honor. The Ropes Course encourages teamwork and sensible risk-taking—important preparation for life’s challenges ahead. Falcon Pride Point: Far Hills is the only school (Preschool-Grade 8) in the area with an on campus Ropes Course and Mountain Bike Trail. STEAM Lab- The Learning Commons is a brand new addition at the heart of our campus and is a space that connects the five subjects of STEAM—science, technology, engineering, arts, and mathematics. This classroom is a spot where not only the students can collaborate with their peers, but also our teachers can collaborate with one another. Our STEAM curriculum is designed to impact students throughout their Far Hills experience and provide them with foundational skills to achieve success far beyond their Grade 8 year. We are motivating our students to embrace collaboration and engagement through not only the technology in the space, but also through the flexibility of the CONNECTION COMMENDS learning environment. Falcon Pride Point: Through this one space, students can build, code, and work on apps, robotics, engineering, and various cross-curricular projects. One day a student could be presenting, building a robot the next day, and working on their grade-level capstone the day after that-all in one space. Has your child thought like an engineer today? Our dedicated and passionate teachers employ research-based strategies, including mind, brain, and education science, keeping the students’ learning at the center of all they do. The deep connectivity between Far Hill’s students and their teachers lasts well into their young adulthood. Falcon Pride Point: Every year, an average of 32 graduates come back to visit their teachers. The arts are a point of pride at Far Hills. Our program provides students with a comprehensive studio experience in both 2D and 3D formats and an award-winning music curriculum that encourages students to create, perform, respond, and connect to music. Falcon Pride Point: Students will perform or present to an audience 86 times while at Far Hills. Social and emotional learning permeates everyday life at Far Hills. Students cultivate life skills— practicing mindfulness, uncovering their strengths, developing empathy, learning conscious decision-making, and building skills that help them communicate, manage stress, and motivate themselves. Falcon Pride Point: Far Hill’s students graduate prepared to confidently lead and achieve. No two students at Far Hills are alike, nor is their individual path as they learn and grow. At Far Hills, students are known and loved. Our small class size allows teachers the opportunity to differentiate their instruction to meet the needs of each child where they are to develop their unique strengths and challenge them in their areas of growth. Far Hills graduates move on to attend the finest boarding and day schools in the country. When they arrive, they are not only prepared, but they exhibit strength of character and confidence in all areas of the secondary school experience from the classroom to the fields to the stage.
