Born and raised in New Jersey, she frequents parks and coastal regions, to observe and photograph nature. As a student, Andrea achieved balance between art and science by choosing art electives throughout her scientific education. It was not until years later, after teaching biology in graduate school, working in the pharmaceutical industry and eventually changing course to stay home and raise her children, that she truly cultivated her painting skills. Andrea paints in oil, acrylic and watercolor media. Her works range in style from representational to abstract and include such genre as butterflies, birds, marine life (including turtles, sharks, bony fish, mollusks and fossils), botanicals, still life, coastal landscapes, folk art, seasonal and whimsical scenes. The artist maintains an in-home studio and an online art & gift gallery. Her artwork and products are available for purchase online at www.agfineartgallery.com as well as a sampling that is available in-store at The Rebecca Collection in Bernardsville. Beyond painting, she also enjoys photography, scenic drives, ballet and yoga, but most of all, spending time at home with her family. This year, elections dominated, Mother Nature roared in the Sunbelt, and parts of the world were disrupted by terrible wars. Here at home, in the safety of NJ, we deal with new reporting regulations, tax sunsets, and the prospect of a soft economic landing. New Reporting Regulations Beneficiary Ownership Information (BOI) filing is a new requirement under the Corporate Transparency Act (CTA). For most, this information needs to be reported by January 1, 2025. Most corporations, LLCs, LLPs and other entities who file documents with the Secretary of State are required to report. “Beneficial owners” of a reporting company under the Act include any individual who owns or controls at least a 25% share or any individual who exercises substantial control over the reporting company. Penalties for non-reporting are stiff, as it is administered by the Financial Crimes Enforcement Network (FinCEN). Many small businesses will need to file. Tax Sunset The Tax Cuts and Jobs Act of 2017 (TCJA) is the most talked about financial sunset this year. We can help you bring it into focus. TCJA are temporary tax law changes. A little proactive planning can be rewarding for individuals, families, and businesses. TCJA reduced income tax rates and expanded estate and gift tax exclusions. The Act also established the qualified business income deduction and fixed the alternative minimum tax. On the flip side, it eliminated the state and local taxes (SALT) deduction (ouch in NJ and NY). By the time you read this article, the election will have been decided, and we will hopefully have some clarity on the fate of this expiring tax law. Your planning window is now. Buckle your seatbelts and prepare for landing! After the inflation spike and the inverted yield curve, economists predicted negative growth or a recession. In September, the Federal Reserve Bank began to cut interest rates, to the cheers of the financial markets. In the interim, economic growth has proved to be resilient. Many factors will determine if a recession or more inflation can be avoided, as we cross our fingers for the Goldilocks outcome of a soft economic landing. Make it a Stress-Free Tax Season The caring and experienced team at Shapiro CPAs guides clients to a stressfree tax season. We have provided proactive individualized tax management as well as timely and accurate tax preparation since 1937. Each member of the Shapiro CPA team is experienced and equipped to manage the complex needs of successful individuals and closely-held businesses. Our integrated services have the added benefit of a single point of personal contact with efficient and stress-free tax reporting done electronically by our offices. As soon as the last of the Thanksgiving leftovers are put away, sparkling lights start to pop up all over town, illuminating the streets and lifting our spirits. You do not have to have to be Clark Griswald or have him as your neighbor to enjoy a great light display. There are many amazing light shows in the area - many free of charge - that are the perfect place to take the family, go with friends, or enjoy a romantic date night and soak up loads of holiday cheer. One of my favorites is The Holiday Lights The Holiday Lights Spectacular at the Essex County Turtle Back Essex County Turtle Back Zoo. Every year since 2006, the Turtle Back Zoo has opened its doors and hosted this pop-up event throughout December displaying its holiday finest. It is the perfect way to celebrate the season. During The Holiday Lights Spectacular, The Holiday Lights Spectacular, the zoo is illuminated with over 100,000 lights turning the paths and displays into a winter wonderland. In addition to the 50 winter and animal displays throughout the zoo, visitors can also tour the indoor reptile house and the marine touch tank. Of course, the little ones can also take a ride on the zoo train or the endangered species carousel. The Holiday Lights Spectacular is open 5-9 pm Friday-Sunday, November 22-24, Friday, November 29-Wednesday, December 6th, and Friday, December 6-Tuesday, December 31st. It is closed on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day. There is no admission fee, but they encourage you to celebrate the spirit of the season by helping others and bringing donations of non-perishable food, new toys, and/or gently used coats. Check out the website at https://turtlebackzoo.com/ for more information and a listing of special events like appearances by Santa, food trucks and more. A little further from home, there is an opportunity to view a drive-through lights display at Diggerland Diggerland in West Berlin, NJ West Berlin, NJ. The cost is $36.99 per vehicle. More information can be found at https://diggerlandusa.com/ special-events/holiday-light-show/. Arguably the biggest light show in the area is hosted by the residents of Dyker Heights Dyker Heights in Brooklyn. This festive neighborhood community decks its halls yearly, with each private residence donning thousands of lights for a magnificent display. It is free of charge to walk through the neighborhood, but traffic and parking are tight. Go during the week for the easiest access. Another option is to take a bus tour from Manhattan. It takes about 4 hours and there are restroom facilities on the coaches. See https://www.dykerheightschristmaslights.com/ for more information and pricing. For more information on the event go to https://www.timeout.com/newyork/ things-to-do/dyker-heights-christmas-lights. About an hour and a half in the other direction is Koziar’s Christmas Village Koziar’s Christmas Village. It began with William Koziar decorating the farm, its paths, and its buildings for his wife and children to enjoy back in 1948, but it has expanded to become what the Pennsylvania Travel Council has deemed one of the top ten travel attractions in Pennsylvania Pennsylvania. Display World Magazine has also voted it Best Outdoor Christmas Display in the World. With over a million lights and beautiful Christmas displays, it is something that should not be missed. See https://koziarschristmasvillage. com/ for hours and more details. Whether you celebrate Christmas or not, these beautiful light displays will light up your heart this winter. You don’t have to blow out your fuses or fall from the roof to see some lights and get in the spirit of the season, check out one (or more) of these magnificent displays and have yourself a merry little Christmas. Carriage Ride Through Central Park Shaded Brook in Evening Cooks Corner CREATIVECORNER Amigurumi - Crocheted Stuffed Toys By Carolyn Hanson I’ve had many requests for help after beginners purchased these adorable kits and were unsuccessful in getting past the first few steps. Here’s what works: - Everything is included: hook, all yarn needed in just the right amount, plastic safety eyes, yarn needle for embroidery, QR code access to video instruction, and stuffing. They even start the project for you. (The hardest part for any beginner.) Plus cute packaging. - The short videos (15 - 60 seconds) can be repeated continuously, as needed. Estimated 3-8 hours to complete. - The yarn is a soft poly-spun material that does not split and is easy to use for beginners. - The medium size hook (4.0 mm, size G) has a cushion handle and is comfortable to hold. Here’s what I have found: - Though the videos are detailed, they don’t explain the need to create and maintain the necessary tension. This skill requires practice which is not emphasized. Instead, it’s presented as if it’s interconnecting blocks that just fit together. Legos anyone? - The videos break down each movement into so many steps that you’re not sure what you’re doing. Imagine being shown how to crack an egg and add it to the cake batter in 5 easy steps. - Written instructions seen in the video are minimal and are not the primary method of instruction. They are a guide to creating the toy, not to teach crochet. There is a pdf of written instructions, but I have not seen them. - There are 30 or more videos to complete the project. - The kits are produced in China. The spoken English is translated from another language. - Cost - $30. For an endless supply of amigurumi patterns, go to ravelry.com. My recommendation? Take a class. migurumi is a Japanese art form that uses crochet or knit to make small stuffed toys. The term comes from two Japanese words, “ami,” meaning crocheted or knitted, and “nuigurumi,” meaning stuffed doll. The appeal is the small size (~ 4 inches tall), whimsical nature, and quick completion. The toys are everywhere on the internet. Patterns can be found online and in stores. Some are available as kits and promoted as ready to go (started for you) and easily completed by anyone 12 or older with no prior knowledge of crochet. Hmm. Sounds too good to be true? Let’s examine. What is crochet and knitting? Both are ancient crafts. Crochet uses a hook and yarn to generate a series of loops, which become a chain, which is then built upon to form a fabric of stitches. Crochet fabric is dense and firm. Knitting, on the other hand, uses 2 pointed needles and yarn to create an interlocking fabric that is flat and stretchy. Knitted fabric is used in textiles. The crocheter must use both hands to generate the necessary tension to form the loops. To stand upright without support, amigurumi toys must be crocheted tightly for stiffness. This requires controlling the yarn to create the necessary tension. Controlling tension is the key skill needed in crochet. A

While there are many helpful tips out there, they might be drowned out by the overwhelming amount of misinformation coming from people with no expertise. Menswear is no different. In 2024, anyone can put on an ill-fitting suit, make a lot of content, get some followers, and call themselves an expert on tailoring. But 90% of them are full of it. This is incredibly frustrating both for me as a professional clothier AND for you as a consumer. While they may be coming from a good place, their research is lacking and the views of these self-proclaimed “experts” are confusing and oxymoronic. So I implore you to log off Instagram, close Tiktok, and let your friendly neighborhood clothier break down how to master your suit fit in 2024. If I’ve ever fit you for a suit you’ve probably heard me say, “Let’s start from the top.” Getting the top right is the most important fit aspect in a jacket. Everything else (sleeves, coat waist, seat, etc.) a good tailor can alter. So when you’re trying on a coat for the first time, focus on these four areas to determine if it’s a good fit. Shoulders- The shoulders should hug your own and end right where your shoulders do naturally. A poorly fitted jacket will have the dreaded “shoulder divots” which are all too common on the red carpet. Collar- The collar should gently hug your neck without any excessive gapping and lay cleanly across your back. FASHIONFLASH The Suit, 2024 AD By David J. Marzano Manager, Adams Fine Clothing and Tuxedo Chest- A tailor can reduce and sculpt the chest, but s/he cannot make it bigger. If your lapels are popping open like Bruce Banner mid-Hulk transformation, you might want to size up. Length- A coat can be shortened slightly, but not lengthened. Like a good lawyer, you want your jacket to do one thing, cover your a$&. Trousers are pretty simple, and if you nail these two aspects, your tailor can handle the rest. Hips- Trousers that fit your hips properly should have pockets that lay clean without flaring out. There should be no excess/ drooping fabric on the sides or back. Rise- The distance from your crotch to the top of your waistband. If the rise is too high, you’re getting a wedgie. If it is too low, then you’re MC Hammer. Both are inadvisable. “BUT DAVE!” you might shout into these pages, “What if I constantly struggle with fit issues and feel like I can never find anything that works for me?” Well, dear readers, let’s dive into why becoming a “custom guy” is your best bet. If you frequently encounter major fit problems, you essentially have two choices: 1. Buy an off-the-rack suit and face the daunting task of extensive alterations. This can end up costing you a fortune. Think about the money spent on the suit itself, plus all the tailoring required to make it fit. 2. Go custom! For less than the combined cost of an off-the-rack suit and its alterations, you can have a suit made to your unique measurements and preferences right from the start. Taking your specific fit issues into account, creating a unique pattern saves you—and your tailor—time and frustration. In short, investing in a custom suit means you’ll get a perfect fit without the headache of constant adjustments. Plus, you’ll have a garment that truly reflects your style! theconnectionsnj.com HOLIDAY CHEER PAGE 28 s the holidays approach, my mind starts to wander to all the great celebrations ahead. Each holiday-with its own traditions and, of course, great food and celebratory feasts! This is precisely when my tastes start to lean towards classic grapes and regions. Here are some of my favorite “best buys” for the season-delicious, affordable wines that won’t break the bank. Cheers! Champagne - You can’t go wrong with Champagne. No other beverage makes any occasion more special than popping a bottle. True Champagne can only come from an area of delimited vineyards just north and east of Paris, but they can be pricey. Marie Weiss Brut Champagne, Marie Weiss Brut Champagne, $40, is my “go-to” everyday Champagne for the holidays. It’s a delicious, complex Champagne that drinks way above its modest price tag. Dry and focused, with lovely brioche and green apple notes, minerality, and a fine mousse. It is everything you could ask for in a bubbly twice its price! Burgundy - Located in central eastern France, the Burgundy region produces some of the finest expressions of Chardonnay and Pinot Noir in the world. The moderate continental climate, ancient marine soils, and long history of winemaking all combine to create the perfect environment for these two grapes. While the best Burgundy can be very expensive (into the tens of thousands of dollars per bottle for top wines like Domaine de la Romanee Conti), there are also great values to be found too. You can’t go wrong with Bourcier Martinot’s Bourcier Martinot’s Macon Blanc 2022, $22. It gives many a Chardonnay from the more prestigious Cote d’or or the Sonoma Coast a run for their money, at a fraction of the price. Beautiful yellow fruits and pear and apple notes are joined by zippy minerality, and a fresh, long finish. This wine offers classic Burgundian character at a minimal price. Domaine Arlaud Bourgogne Rouge Roncevie $49.99 - Domain Arlaud is located in one of the finest terroirs in the world for the Pinot Noir grape. This overachiever comes from grapes grown just a stone’s throw from a Grand Cru Vineyard in Gevrey Chambertin. It’s as good as many a Gevrey that sell at twice the price. Simply an outstanding wine, you can drink it now with decanting or cellar it for a decade or more. Cabernet Sauvignon - Bedrock’s Sonoma Bedrock’s Sonoma County 2022 -This world class red wine grape makes some of the finest wines in the world, with Bordeaux and California being at the forefront of quality. With many Napa Cab prices in the stratosphere, I am looking elsewhere for value. Bedrock’s Sonoma County 2022 offers great Cabernet fruit, depth, and power at a terrific price! Crafted by Morgan Peterson, son of famed Ravenswood founder Joel Peterson, this wine is simply a joy to drink. Loaded with deep, plush plum and cassis fruit, moderate tannins, and just a hint of oak, it will be perfect with anything from Turkey to a roasted Prime Rib of beef. At $50, it’s a pretty good deal too! After dinner is the time to sit back by the fire, binge on holiday sweets, and enjoy a soul-warming dram. You can’t go wrong with Port, especially Kopke’s 10-Year Tawny, $33, Kopke’s 10-Year Tawny, $33, from the oldest Port house in the world. Founded in 1638, they are the pros when it comes to aged, ready-to-drink Tawny Ports. The 10-year is ruby brick in color, with aromas of kirchy dried cherry, spices, caramel, and dried fruits. Best of all, it is sweet and delicious on the palate. You can open it, enjoy a glass, and put the stopper back in. It will last for weeks or longer.
