But what exactly is a fitness chal- lenge? Fitness challenges come in many shapes and sizes. There are weight loss challenges, habit building challenges, and lifestyle challenges to name a few. As a participant you are committing to work towards one of these goals over a defined period of time. Most challenges will run any- where from three to twelve weeks. Generally speaking you will be follow- ing some type of structured format that provides a combination of exer- cise, nutrition and wellness compo- nents. Why should you consider partic- ipating in such a program? Here are five good reasons why a fitness chal- lenge may be good for you. Accountability – one of the great aspects of a fitness challenge is the accountability. The challenge will start on a specific day. There is generally more oversight during the challenge by the staff and the participants to keep everyone working together. Regular check-ins and group activities help to keep you accountable to participating. Showing up is half the battle. Support – Misery loves company. Everyone starts and finishes together. A great bond can be formed as partic- ipants are working alongside each other toward a common goal. Having others to share your successes and fail- ures with helps to keep everyone pro- gressing together. Expertise – Most challenges come with a lot of ongoing content. Nutrition plans, exercise routines, per- sonalized instruction, and habit chang- ing guidance are often all normally part of a comprehensive program. This is also often available at a more afford- able price than personal training. Making sure that you are beginning on a good foot will help to alleviate any setbacks. Setting you up for success as you begin this journey. Getting Started! – The most important part of any new fitness rou- tine is just getting started. This can be intimidating for many of us to do. Where do I begin? What exercises should I do? How do I ensure that I will get the results I am looking for? Getting started is often the toughest part. Being part of a challenge group provides a great starting point. Many of the answers to our questions have been programmed for us. It also can be far less intimidating to be part of a group than walking the path alone. Fun!!! – Being part of a challenge creates a certain level of excitement that is contagious. If you can have fun while working towards your goals you are far more likely to be consistent. Consistency equals results. There is very little downside to par- ticipating in these types of programs. They run for a specific duration of time and at a pretty economical cost consid- ering all that you get as a participant in the program. If you are looking to get started with a new fitness routine for yourself this might just be the ticket. 139 Morristown Road Bernardsville, NJ 07924 833.CITY.GYM citygymbville.com Drew Rosenzweig is the operator of City Gym.
