The Connections Bernards Ridge Edition Sept 2020

theconnectionsnj.com HOME & DESIGN PAGE 52 This pandemic is driving you crazy, but your outdated, non-functional “kitchen”, ”home office”, “master bathroom” is put- ting you over the edge. But, is it really a good time to undertake a major renova- tion? The answer is YES! You’ve got the time now to do it and most designers and con- tractors are safely managing projects using new health protocols. So here are 10 things to expect as you embark on your home transformation during COVID-19. 1. Virtual Meetings – You can choose to do your first meeting in person or via Zoom/ Skype with your contractor or designer. If you are meeting via Zoom, make sure that you email ahead some dimensions of the room and pictures of the space for discussion. 2. Site Measurements – Eventually, actual site measurements will need to be taken by your designer or contractor. This can be done safely by sanitizing hands and wearing masks. 3. Visiting Showrooms – A lot of light- ing, hardware, and fixtures can be found online, but nothing beats feeling and see- ing things in person at a showroom. Most showrooms require appointments now in order to avoid too many customers at one time. You may have a limited time slot de- pending on the showroom, so ask if there is a time limit before you start shopping. 4. Lead Times – Lead times for materials such as cabinetry and fixtures are more vari- able so ask for lead times before ordering, order early and be flexible with your timeline. 5. On-Line Sign Off – Signing contracts can be done in person or by email so face- to-face meetings can be minimized. 6. Construction Zone – Ideally the area that is being remodeled will be sectioned off with plastic and have its own entrance. If this is not possible, the area will be sec- tioned off as good as possible and a desig- nated entrance should be used exclusively for workers during the day. 7. Alternate Space – Since you are home a lot more now, you definitely need to create a functional, alternate space while remodeling, such as a mini “kitchen” in the laundry room, or a makeshift office in your bedroom. Being able to cook a meal or keep yourself organized will help you keep your sanity during construction. 8. Wear Masks – If you need to go into the construction area, both you and the contractor should wear a mask, and do not allow your children or pets into the area. 9. Limit Workers – The schedule for your project will allow a limited number of workers at your home at any one time so that they can social distance while working. Masks will be worn when social distancing is not feasible. 10. Sanitize Site – At the end of each day, your contractor will sanitize any high touch surfaces, like doorknobs, before they leave to help keep your family safe.
