A successful career designing fine bridal and fashion jewelry allowed her to express her creativity while building decades of experience in craftsmanship, composition, and design. In recent years, Joan has returned to painting with renewed passion. Working primarily in watercolor and gouache, she also enjoys exploring oils, acrylics, colored pencils, and pastels. Her paintings draw inspiration from nature, botanical subjects, architecture, moments of quiet whimsy, and everyday scenes that leave a lasting impression. Joan is an active member of New Jersey Arts, West Essex Arts, Ringwood Manor Arts, and the Livingston Arts Associations regularly exhibiting her work throughout the region. Her paintings have received recognition in local and statewide exhibitions, including the New Jersey Conservancy's native bird exhibition at Jersey City's SMUSH Gallery, an Award of Excellence for her architectural watercolor Budapest, and multiple honors in both the Essex County and New Jersey State Senior Citizens Art Exhibitions. But what happens when the words chosen to describe that plan turn out to mean different things to different people? A recent, unpublished New Jersey appellate decision, Fuller v. Fuller, offers an instructive real-world example. The couple divorced in 2007, and their marital settlement agreement included a fairly standard clause: As each child approached their junior year of high school, the parents would meet to discuss potential colleges and costs, with expenses capped at roughly the cost to attend Kean University, a relatively affordable private school. The agreement assumed the children would take out loans, with the parents covering costs only after financial aid was applied. Dispute Arises Over Student Loans Years later, in 2018, the parents entered a consent order clarifying that the children would first apply for financial aid, including “reasonable student loans,” and Dad would cover whatever college costs remained after that aid was applied. The children began taking out loans, with dad co-signing. By 2019, Mom raised concerns about the size of the debt, and Dad suggested she could “feel free to help.” By 2023, each child owed roughly $50,000 in loans, and mom’s attorney argued dad had improperly shifted the entire financial burden onto the children. Dad’s side countered that he had already paid close to $50,000 toward college costs. Mom then went to court, claiming Dad had willfully violated the consent order. The trial judge disagreed, finding the order’s language clear and unambiguous. She appealed and lost again. Key Takeaways The Appellate Division’s reasoning offers a useful lesson for anyone entering a settlement agreement: courts generally will not rewrite a contract or hand one side a better deal than they actually negotiated. When the language is clear, judges must enforce it as written. This holds true even if one party later regrets the wording. A hearing to interpret disputed language is only available when there’s genuine ambiguity, not just dissatisfaction with an outcome. Here, Mom never proved the loans were actually “unreasonable,” offering no expert testimony comparing interest rates or loan terms to what was otherwise available. The case underscores a common theme in divorce planning: many parents want their children to have “skin in the game” when it comes to college costs, and it’s common for settlement agreements to reference federal student loans specifically, often capped near $5,500 per year. But using vague terms like “reasonable” can leave room for future disputes if they are not defined up front. If parents want to cap loan amounts, restrict loan types or guarantee a particular division of costs, the agreement needs to say so explicitly. The takeaway for anyone drafting or relying on a settlement agreement is simple: precision now can prevent costly, and often unsuccessful, litigation later. In fall, when the traffic has died down, the sand has cooled, and the crowds have headed home, it is the perfect time to pack up your family and friends and head back down to the Shore to explore the historic lighthouses. A great way to plan your adventure is to participate in the annual Lighthouse Challenge, which is held on the third weekend of October each year. This year, the Challenge includes sites on the Atlantic Coast from Sandy Hook to Cape May and the Delaware Bay and River Coast from Cape May to Paulsboro. Eleven lighthouses, four light saving stations, and one museum participated. Although the sites are open to everyone, if you pay a small entry fee of orget about what the calendar says. Labor Day might have passed, but there are still miles of gorgeous shoreline that we have in New Jersey. Without the traffic or the crowds, fall is a great time to explore the historic lighthouses that pepper our coastline. They are open every day, but if you are up for a challenge, pack up the car and spend the weekend of October 17th and 18th as part of the annual Lighthouse Challenge. Summertime at the Jersey Shore is filled with lazy days on the sand, frolicking in the surf, boardwalk rides, games, and, of course, funnel cake. There is not much time to appreciate the tall structures that have illuminated and protected the beaches for $10 you can join the Challenge and collect a souvenir at each site you visit. If the idea of visiting historical sites seems daunting to you because you have young children, do not fret. The website has a page on “How to Do the Challenge with Kids and Survive” that was created by a mom and preschool teacher. It includes creative ideas like keeping a total number of steps at each lighthouse, then adding them up and competing to see who can come the closest at guessing the total. Another idea is to come up with fun questions to ask the volunteers, like how many bricks the lighthouse is made of or what some shipwreck stories are. (Kids love a good shipwreck story!) Of course, another idea that always works is having food in the trunk and opening it up for “trunk snacks” after each tour. Allowing the kids to snack between sites makes the time in the car go much more quickly! These and more ideas are included on the website below. They will keep your kids engaged, energized, and learning while, most importantly, having a fun family day, This year the Challenge is celebrating America 250 and honoring Sandy Hook Lighthouse, which was the only New Jersey Lighthouse standing during the Revolution. Each participant will be given a map of colonial NJ with pockets on the map where each site is located. You can collect a wooden coin at each site visited to complete your map. The lighthouses at Sea Girt, Barnegat, Barnegat Light, Navesink Twin Lights, and more are all participating in the Challenge, but they are open to the public and host tours and special events throughout the year. Before you stop by, here are a few things that’ll make the process easier for both of us. Have an idea. You don’t need to know exactly what you want, but having a starting point helps. Maybe it’s a color you like, a specific cut you’ve seen, or a suit from your favorite movie. Any reference gives us something to get the conversation moving in the right style direction. If you’re shopping for a wedding or any event where you’ll be eating, have something beforehand. Clothes fit a little differently after a meal, and it’s better to know how your suit will feel after dinner than halfway through the reception.
