Even if your eyes feel healthy and your vision seems fine, problems can develop without symptoms. Many eye diseases present no early warning signs. Regular eye exams can detect subtle changes before they progress, helping to protect your vision for years to come. What An Eye Exam Can Reveal Comprehensive eye exams do more than check if you need glasses or contact lenses. They can reveal signs of health concerns, such as diabetes and high blood pressure, and help detect early signs of age-related eye conditions like cataracts, glaucoma, macular degeneration, and diabetic retinopathy. Why Regular Eye Care Is Important According to the American Academy of Ophthalmology (AAO), one in six Americans aged 65 and older has vision impairment that cannot be corrected with glasses or contact lenses. The risk of eye disease increases with age, yet many adults do not receive regular eye care. Why Patients May Delay Eye Exams Many people delay eye exams because their eyes feel fine, life gets busy, or medical visits feel intimidating. We often hear patients say, “My eyes feel fine, so why come in?” However, as we age, subtle changes can develop without pain or obvious warning signs, making routine eye care crucial for protecting vision.
