THE BRIDGEWATER-SOMERVILLE CONNECTION PAGE 6 theconnectionsnj.com APRIL/MAY 2023 Spring is here to make our days better, brighter, and warmer. Be sure to take the time to enjoy the warm sunshine, smell the roses, and shop local! When the new issue comes out, I love to sit on my porch on a beautiful spring morning with my coffee and read about all the wonderful businesses-delicious restaurants, stores with quality and unique merchandise, and shops with superior service. Because these establishments are LOCAL, they are able to provide us with personalized service and attention. We are lucky enough to live in an area that has the ability to provide a wide array of small businesses waiting to serve us and welcome us into their stores! In this issue, we are proud to celebrate WOMEN-OWNED BUSINESSES! We take our hats off to these female entrepreneurs, armed with strength and determination, to work hard and sail through tough times, to see opportunities to launch new businesses. Take a look at the Women-Owned Directory and see how many of the small businesses in our towns are owned by women. Please join me, as a female business owner, in honoring and supporting them. Give yourself a spring treat; visit the Mansion in May at Three Fields in Mendham. It is a must-attend event, showcasing forty-four of the area’s top interior and landscape designers. Mansion in May runs through the entire month of May. To learn more, read the article, “Premier Interior and Landscape Designers Come Together for Mansion in May 2023 at Three Fields”, by Barbara Gallo. Check out our Community News column to discover how America’s Grow-a-Row is helping so many people less fortunate than us. They expect to serve more than 100,000 people this year through their produce donation, volunteer, and education programs. Please consider donating or volunteering; read the article to find out how you can help. And remember-giving is so much more rewarding than receiving. Our cover symbolizes the epitome of spring. This beautiful watercolor piece was painted by Ethan Szeman, a student at Somerville High School. I love the combination of purples and greens he chose to use. THE BRIDGEWATER-SOMERVILLE CONNECTION PAGE 8 theconnectionsnj.com APRIL/MAY 2023 Ethan Szeman is a current student in Mrs. Conklin’s National Arts Honor Society at Somerville High School. He has always been inspired to create art. He says that, “I use art as a way to express myself as well as my interests.” Ethan experiments with many different mediums when capturing his artistic ideas, but he mostly gravitates towards using digital or watercolor. Along his artistic journey, he’s been most inspired by Johannes Vermeer, a painter during the Baroque Period that mostly focused on domestic scenes of middle-class life. He’s responsible for works such as Girl with a Pearl Earring and The Milkmaid. Ethan’s favorite quote is from the very famous artist Pablo Picasso, “Painting is just another way of keeping a diary.” In the future, he is envisioning that he will be in school for art and continuing to express himself through his artistic pieces. Ethan will continue to showcase his ideas and to grow his ongoing portfolio. THE BRIDGEWATER-SOMERVILLE CONNECTION PAGE 12 theconnectionsnj.com APRIL/MAY 2023 Now and then something comes across that just pulls on your heartstrings and moves you to action. This is the case with an article recently appearing in The Washington Post. It’s about an organization of volunteer crafters who complete un nished projects for other crafters who died before its completion. When a crafter/maker dies mid-project, this tangible, handmade expression of love could get lost, donated, or thrown out. Loose Ends helps to get the project nished as intended and given back to be cherished. Loose Ends is organized and managed by 2 friends residing on opposite sides of the country who generously give their time and skill to help grieving families by matching un nished projects with a volunteer Finisher. They now have gathered over 4500 volunteer Finishers from 38 countries and all 50 States to help in the effort. Through these volunteers, a maker’s project can be enjoyed by their families. VOLUNTEERS Since all handcrafts are accepted by Loose Ends, all crafter skills are needed, including knitting, crochet, quilting, mending, spinning, weaving, tatting, embroidery, etc. Becoming a volunteer is as simple as completing an application at www.looseendsproject. org. Provide your location (State), skills, and the types of projects you would like to complete. This information is used to match a Finisher with a project. HELP FOR AN UNFINISHED PROJECT Having an un nished project completed by a volunteer Finisher is at no cost to the family. However, certain criteria must be met: 1. The originator of the project must be deceased or no longer able to nish the project due to illness or disability. 2. The project must be partially begun. 3. The project and its materials must be free of moths and moth eggs. No contaminated yarn or rotting materials. 4. The project must not smell of mothballs or mold. If the deceased was a smoker, they will do their best to match the project with a tolerant Finisher. The family then completes an application at www.looseendsproject.org. The Loose Ends team then matches a project to a nearby Finisher. At that point, the family works directly with the Finisher. The project owner is responsible for all shipping costs to and from the Finisher, along with extra materials and any available instructions. A Little Something Extra…Some of the Finishers shared the idea that they mark the spot where the family member had stopped with a small heart or other marking. I think that is such a thoughtful and warm gesture from a stranger. It is so gratifying to complete a project for a grieving family. I remember feeling helpless when my aunt was dying. My uncle showed me a sweater that she had started for her unborn grandchild. I was able to ask if she would like me to nish it for her. I felt so honored when she said, “Yes”. It gave us both joy and later a welcomed surprise gift to her daughter…lots of tears over that one. WHAT ELSE CAN BE DONE? If your loved one has crafting supplies like fabric, yarn, needles, etc., that are in good condition, think of donating them to a local Thrift Shop or Goodwill. Another option is Gemma Fabrics in New Hope, PA at www.gemmafabrics.com. Gemma Fabrics is a secondhand fabric and yarn thrift store in Bucks County, PA. They accept any sewing, knitting, crocheting, and other ber arts supplies for resale. Loose Ends is organized and managed by 2 friends residing on opposite sides of the country who generously give their time and skill to help grieving families by matching un nished projects with a volunteer Finisher. It gives us a chance to examine our lives and resolve to make some things better. How can we experience the feelings of satisfaction that come from helping others? How can we increase connections to those who may be facing isolation as well as meeting other volunteers who are helping to make the world a little brighter? Since 2005, Jewish Family Service of Somerset, Hunterdon and Warren Counties (JFS) has been engaging volunteers of all ages to get involved with families and isolated seniors. Participating in the Senior Friendly Visitor program “has been very rewarding to me. I have gotten as much personal satisfaction as I hope I have provided to my seniors over the past several years,” says Cathy Siegel, a retired occupational therapist and member of the Board of Trustees of JFS. A client in the Senior Shopper Program said: “There is not enough room to describe how highly I would praise my volunteer. Brie y, she is a lifeline. I look forward to her weekly visits. She brings food and joy”. Another client in JFS’ Family Mentor Program told us (my volunteer) “was a wonderful companion. We shared many good conversations. She was very helpful when I had bad days.” Volunteers consistently give feedback like “JFS’ program strength is that they provide responsive staff to support volunteers. I appreciate that a quali ed, experienced social worker is there for me – and for families.” You can check out all of our volunteer opportunities— both virtual and through grocery shopping for a senior by checking out our website: www.Jewishfamilysvc.org, or speci c opportunities: Senior Grocery Shopper: jewishfamilysvc.org/senior-shopper.php Senior Friendly Visitor: jewishfamilysvc.org/senior-mentor.php Family Mentor Program: jewishfamilysvc.org/family-mentor.php JFS is a nonpro t, nonsectarian social service agency serving the needs of individuals and families in Somerset, Hunterdon and Warren Counties since 1980. JFS is committed to serving the needs of the entire community and offers a continuum of programs and services. Licensed clinical social workers provide individual, couples and family counseling as well as geriatric assessments, supportive counseling and case management services for home bound elderly. The Family Mentor Program recruits, trains and matches volunteers with vulnerable young families or with elderly persons for friendly, supportive, in-home visits. theconnectionsnj.com SHOPPING, DINING, BEAUTY & EVENTS PAGE 16 With proper care, cleaning, and storage, a fur coat can last for decades before being repurposed and upcycled. Common sense and some TLC can keep a fur in peak condition for many years. Furs don’t like heat, friction and cramped spaces. But they do thrive on the following: • Fur Storage. Nothing shortens the lifespan of a fur like keeping it cooped up in the closet during the hot summer months. Home storage – even using air conditioning or cedar closets will not protect your fur from drying out or from dust, dirt, and insect damage. A cedar closet absorbs moisture and will dry out the leather. Professional fur vaults are specially designed environments with carefully controlled humidity and temperature. When furs are not professionally stored, though the fur may not appear to be damaged, the natural oils in the leather may dry out. When the oil diminishes it can prematurely age the garment and leave it more vulnerable to rips and tears. • Fur Cleaning. Furs should be cleaned annually by a fur specialist – never by a dry cleaner for clothes. While fur may not look dirty, it needs freshening to remove particles of dirt on the fur and to keep it soft. The cleaning process – putting oils back into the fur and leather – prolongs its longevity and enhances the luster of the fur. • Fur Care. Avoid shoulder-strap hand bags on a consistent basis as the strap will rub the fur and create bald patches. Avoid getting perfume and hairspray on the fur. Do not treat a fur with mothballs. • When Fur Gets Wet. Most furs can handle some rain and snow. Shake it out and hang it in a well-ventilated room. Never hang the fur near direct heat. Resist the temptation to use a hair dryer on the fur and do not use a brush or comb on the fur. Should the fur get thoroughly soaked, professional treatment by a fur retailer is required. • Closet Space Needed. During the winter, give your fur ample closet space with no exposure to bright light, which can cause fur to oxidize and change color. • Broad Shouldered Hanger. During the fur-wearing season, a fur needs to hang on a broad-shouldered hanger – no wires! A fur retailer can provide one. • Fur Needs Breathing Room. Fur needs air circulation to prevent its leather side from drying out. Never cover fur with a plastic bag. If it must be covered for a short period of time, use a loosely woven cloth bag so the fur can breathe. • Enjoy Wearing Your Fur! KIDZ CONNECTION PAGE 26 theconnectionsnj.com By Joanne Kleinle Get Ready for an Adventure- in New York’s Central Park! As winter fades away and spring approaches, I can’t help thinking of Mary Poppins grabbing the hands of the Banks children and heading out for a glorious day in the park to “ y a kite.” We are so fortunate to have so many public parks in our area where we can do just that on a gusty spring day. Even better, if you are looking to make your day in the park into a real “stay-cation,” you should pack up your family and head into New York’s Central Park. This massive 843-acre oasis in our backyard is world famous and for good reason. It has something for everyone from history buffs to architecture a cionados to geologists to people (and dogs) just looking to run, row, or enjoy a relaxing afternoon with nature. You could easily spend days just walking through this beautiful park, climbing on the incredible rock formations, and looking at the beautiful bridges and sculptures throughout. If you have a family in tow, though, you might want to be prepared and have a few interactive activities in your back pocket to keep the crew from getting restless. For a full listing of all that the park has to offer, including fees and special events, you should explore the website at www.centralparknyc.org. Here are my family favorites: (These are also great ideas if you are entertaining people from out of town who want to explore New York City in a whole new way.) The most famous spot in the park might be the Central Park Zoo, and for good reason. The zoo is not large-it can be done in half a day if you do not linger. It has an amazing collection of animals from tropical, temperate, and polar zones that rival zoos that are much larger- including the best penguin exhibit that I have seen anywhere! Be sure to note the sea lion feeding times as you enter. You do not want to miss it! The zoo also includes a children’s zoo with sheep, goats, a pot-bellied pig, and the only cow in Manhattan. If you have Mary Poppins on your mind, no trip to the park would be complete without visiting the historic carousel. Located mid-park around 65th Street, the carousel has more than 50 individual horses. Call 212-439-6900 for hours, fees and info. One of the park’s lesser-known gems is the Swedish Cottage. Nestled on the West Side of the park around 79th Street, this fairytale-like cottage hosts one of the last marionette companies in the United States. The troop will be performing “Wake Up, Daisy!,” a modern take on Sleeping Beauty, every Friday, Saturday, and Sunday at 11 am and 1 pm through June. Tickets must be purchased in advance at cityparksfoundation.org. Your kids will love it-and you will too! After the performance, head over to the East Side of the Park around 75th Street to the Conservatory Water. This is a scene from another famous children’s tale- E.B. White’s Stuart Little. From April through October, you can sit and watch the remote-controlled, wind-powered sailboats cruise around the water or take part in the action and rent one for yourself-no mouse required! While you are there you can take a look at the Alice in Wonderland statue and let the kids’ (and your own) imaginations roam as you take in the beauty of the statue and imagine the fanciful story. Just a quick walk will take you to The Lake in the middle of the park between 71st and 78th streets. Since the mid-nineteenth century, New Yorkers have used this lake as a way to get away from the chaos of the city. The Loeb Boathouse has a cafe and restaurant where you can sit and look out at the peaceful lake. In April through October, you can rent a rowboat to take yourself around or hire a gondola for an intimate guided tour of The Lake. If you head north to 106th Street on the East Side, you will nd Harlem Meer. Here you can nd a pond stocked with largemouth bass, pumpkinseed sun sh, bluegill sun sh, and chain pickerel in the middle of Manhattan! Fishing poles are available for rent at no charge and you can pick up bait at the Charles A. Dana Discovery Center. While there, you can also “rent” lawn games or discovery kits with kidsized binoculars, a hand lens, and colored pencils. There is no fee for rentals, but a deposit is required. There are also “discovery journals” available-free of charge. These are just a few of the adventures awaiting you and your family in Central Park. Check out the website to learn more about the history, the architecture, and even the rock formations that are second to none. The website can also direct you to guided and self-guided tours, concerts, events, and camps that are offered in the park. It is a beautiful Spring Day-don’t just y a kite. Take advantage of all Central Park has to offer- it is only a train ride away! This massive 843-acre oasis in our backyard is world famous and for good reason. PAGE 27 KIDZ CONNECTION theconnectionsnj.com It has been said…”While we try to teach our children all about life, our children teach us what life is all about”. -Unknown Blooming Hearts Child Development Center opened in 2013 with a belief that ‘’Play is a child’s work”. The staff echoes this daily in their education and care of the children. Taking these values and implementing them, the staff is able to not only establish “a homey environment where children would feel comfortable and loved”, but also to incorporate tools such as Creative Curriculum to further their vision. The curriculum is modified as necessary to provide each child with the most stimulating, hands-on, learning experience possible. Safety and protection are our number one priority. Our daycare is equipped with security and burglar alarms, webcam in every room and a sprinkler system throughout the whole building. Care is provided for children ages newborn to 13 years old. There are a limited number of spaces available for special needs children as well. We provide AM and PM snacks. Weather permitting, the children are able to enjoy our beautiful, outdoor play-space to run off that extra energy. All of our programs are age appropriate and the small class sizes allow us to setup learning stations and computers that will help increase their experiences and stimulate new thoughts and ideas for creative learning. Our staff of teachers are experienced, certified, and trained in first aid and CPR. Each member of our staff has completed the mandatory screenings which include background checks, finger printing and references. Ongoing training throughout the year is provided for the teachers to keep them on the cutting edge of the best practices in childcare as well as education for today’s ever-changing world. During the summer, a variety of summer camps programs are offered. Each week every camper will enjoy water play and cooking activities as well as special “visiting” field trips! The Lizard Guys, Magician, pony rides, and a clown are always a huge hit! We also offer additional programs the children can be registered for at an additional cost which include Swimming Lessons (Hillsborough Racquetball Club), Karate (onsite instruction), and Amazing Athletes (on-site instruction). Again, these programs will only be available to those who register for them, and there is an additional cost. There is busing provided to and from Sunny Mead, Auten Road, and Triangle Elementary Schools. Please visit us on our Facebook page Blooming Hearts Child Development Center. theconnectionsnj.com HOME & DESIGN PAGE 30 Excitement is building for the opening of the 20th Mansion in May at Three Fields in the Borough of Mendham, New Jersey. The designer show house and gardens will feature the design inspirations of 44 of the area’s leading interior and landscape designers. Occurring bi- or triennially since 1974, Mansion in May has been the premier show house event for design and architecture, featuring the most historic and iconic mansions in New Jersey. More than 20,000 visitors are expected to tour Three Fields throughout the month of May. Beautifully situated on almost 36 acres of pastoral, rolling elds, Three Fields features many architectural elements, including tall, steeply pitched tile roofs punctuated by dormers, wood casement windows (originally shuttered), and French doors that opened to the formal gardens, ponds, and elds beyond. The 9,000 squarefoot stone, brick, and tile-roofed French manor-style home was designed by New York architect, Greville Rickard, for Benjamin Duncan Mosser and his wife, the former Florence Willets Mosford. Designed and built between 1929 and 1930, Three Fields was described in Architecture magazine in the early 1930s as being “in the French style,” to evoke the feeling of a long-established, rambling Norman-style country farmhouse, rustic and yet also somewhat formal in style. The facade, made up of several conjoined units—as if the house had been added to over the years—as well as roofs with built-in bumps and sags, all served to further project the romantic look of an elegant, long-established country residence. Visitors to Three Fields will have the opportunity to tour the mansion individually or on a private guided tour and experience the interior designers’ unique transformations in their speci c spaces. A tour of the gardens will provide visitors with the pleasure of spending time among beautifully landscaped outdoor spaces lled with owering plants, relaxing seating, dramatic sculpture, and inspiring artwork. Browsing in the boutiques at Three Fields and dining in the café will enhance their visit while supporting a worthwhile cause in support of the community it serves. Chosen by the Women’s Association for Morristown Medical Center for its signature fundraiser, the proceeds of this month-long event will bene t the expansion and modernization of the Institute of Bioskills Training and Innovation at Morristown Medical Center. Mansion in May 2023 will be open to the public daily from May 1-31 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. For tickets and information on group and individual private tours, please visit www.mansioninmay.org. theconnectionsnj.com HOME & DESIGN PAGE 31 When contemplating a new design or renovation, most clients focus on paint colors, ooring, and furniture; however, when planning any room, window treatments should never be an afterthought. Window treatments can provide security and privacy, increase energy ef ciency and add immeasurably to the design impact of the room. In terms of privacy, window treatments control light and create a barrier between your personal space and the outside world. Think of how exposed you feel in a hotel room at night with the interior lights on and the curtains open! Curtains and shades provide privacy and security~both psychological and physical. Sheers allow light to pass through but help reduce glare and give a moderate amount of privacy. A shade you raise or lower can allow you both complete privacy and light control. Blackout shades or curtains can keep bedrooms dark enough to sleep comfortably, particularly if the natural light cycle doesn’t mesh with one’s personal sleep schedule. Covered windows also reduce sun damage from UV rays and help control excessive heat. In winter, you might love and appreciate having the sun stream into a room midday to warm it up, but that same room in midsummer will probably require your air conditioner to work overtime! In terms of energy ef ciency, window treatments can be an invaluable investment. Older homes and sometimes even newly built homes often have windows that aren’t airtight. A well-designed window treatment can help in eliminating drafts and ultimately reduce heating bills. Fabric treatments also absorb sound which can make a room you relax in quieter and more restful. And then there’s the aesthetic side of a beautifully designed room with appropriate window treatments! The right fabric, pattern, or texture can pull an entire room together. Woven woods add visual interest and lots of texture, whereas fabrics can add softness and serenity to a room. A room can be made visually harmonious with treatments that match and blend or be elevated to spectacular with dramatic draperies or shades. When I work with clients with a beautiful view they want to emphasize, I’ll use fabrics to enhance the view by using a complementary pattern or a simple, neutral fabric that won’t detract in any way. If the view out a window is less than desirable, sheers or a shade can add beauty to the room by diminishing the view. And in some rooms, the window treatment itself is the focal point. One of my favorite solutions is beautifully textured linen (or linen-look) panels or Roman shades with a statement trim~a timeless, classic, and elegant window treatment. Depending on the style of your home, the use of the room, and what you’re trying to accomplish, there are multitudes of options from light ltering, woven and custom fabric shades to valances, stationary panels, and full oor-to-ceiling or traversing draperies. If you’re not sure which window treatment is best for your home, consult an interior designer. Ready to update the heart of your home? I’d love to talk with you! theconnectionsnj.com HOME & DESIGN PAGE 32 We all love to talk about real estate, don’t we? Let’s cover some current housing topics. From the social sphere, the Cocktail Pool is the latest outdoor entertainment trend. Smaller than a standard pool for swimming, Cocktail Pools are less costly by virtue of their size, and create a very desirable feature for homeowners with limited outdoor space. They can be customized with heat and jets, from a “pool” to a “spool” (spa + pool) and though the expense would be higher, the range of use can then be expanded. Imagine being able to enjoy a summer soak chatting with friends over drinks. Then later, having the option to turn on the heated jets for private hydrotherapy and relaxation. A Cocktail Pool is an attention-grabbing feature that might really enhance a home’s appeal when it’s time to sell. What if a pool is an unattainable luxury when you are desperately trying to nd a home you can afford? Across New Jersey, leaders are looking for solutions to today’s housing crisis. Limited inventory of available homes is one piece of the puzzle. The Property Ladder is a metaphor beginning with rst-time buyers in rentals/starter homes, and progressing through ownership of various properties  tting a person’s life-stage and needs. Many older homeowners want to downsize their living situation by reducing square footage or yard size. They may be looking to move from multi-story to one-level living. When they can’t nd homes to meet that wish, they don’t leave, which keeps property unavailable to the next generation of home seekers. Affordability is another large component of the housing crisis. Did you know that builders are now 3-D printing homes to address that challenge? New technology is at work in Texas, in a community near Austin. Their modest-sized, quick-delivery dwellings are designed to be low-cost and sustainable. Supply-chain and material expense issues are minimized by the concrete-dependent style of construction. Aspiring homeowners who are priced out of the market would welcome smaller homes that they can afford. Homeowners wanting to downsize would have additional options. The builders hope their project is scalable and can be imported to other states. Because our zoning laws in New Jersey are very restrictive, perhaps a trial community would provide the opportunity to examine the concept and its feasibility. Accessory Dwelling Units, or ADUs, represent limited-size extra places to live on the lot of an existing home. ADUs can be garage apartments, cottages, attached dwellings, or other styles. Depending on what a municipality will allow, ADUs can be rented out, age-restricted, or reserved for relatives only. Very few towns in New Jersey have zoning ordinances permitting ADUs. Obviously, the idea of added housing is controversial and raises the question of overcrowding. Each municipality will have to weigh the pros and cons of housing evolution as our lawmakers propose changes to increase the number and variety of affordable homes. Now you’re ready to join the housing conversation at your next neighborhood gathering.
