It is where they raised their son; who currently lives with his family in London. She spent over 40 years as a teacher of special needs children, mostly in the Scotch Plains-Fanwood School District. While there, she received The Council for Learning Disabilities "Outstanding Teacher" for North America award. In those days, her art forays were limited to bulletin boards and illustrations for teaching! Upon her retirement, she enrolled in art classes at OLLI-RU (Osher Lifelong Learning at Rutgers U.) and online classes while working as a private tutor and all of that changed. Her main focus is now watercolors, acrylics, and ink. Her work represented Somerset County and was displayed in the New Jersey State Senior Art Show. As we welcome the arrival of spring, we are delighted to present to you the latest edition of the Bridgewater-Somerville Connection. This issue is dedicated to celebrating the beauty of nature’s new blossoms, the excitement of new growth, and the joy of warm weather. Spring is a time of renewal and rejuvenation, and what better way to embrace this spirit than by exploring the new businesses that have recently opened their doors. Whether you are in search of a cozy café for a leisurely afternoon, a boutique filled with the latest fashion trends, a wellness center to nurture your body, or a designer to help update and brighten your home, our local advertisers have something for everyone. In addition to celebrating the arrival of spring, we are thrilled to announce that this issue will be dedicated to highlighting Woman-Owned Businesses. We want to take this opportunity to recognize and honor the incredible women who have shown tremendous dedication, passion and perseverance in their entrepreneurial endeavors. As a fellow business owner, it’s truly inspiring to see the hard work and dedication of other women in the business world. We’re honored to have them featured in this issue, and we support and stand by them in their entrepreneurial journey. Take a look at our Women-Owned Directory and see how many small businesses in our towns are owned by women. Together, we can uplift and empower one another to achieve greater success. These entrepreneurs have entrusted us with spreading the word about their ventures, inviting you to patronize their establishments. Let’s come together and show our support for them. We encourage you to take the time to peruse this issue and discover the hidden gems that await you in our community. Our Community News column features the good works of nourish.NJ. The Raritan Yacht Club is local and o ers several programs including the Learn to Sail Program. Although the sailing season is from May to October, the clubhouse is open all year long and o ers many activities and events. The vibrant flowers on our cover were painted by local artist, Marjorie St. Clair. The medium is watercolor and pen. Marjorie titled the piece, Hope Springs… and was inspired by the beauty and hope that the season brings. Thank you for your continued readership and for joining us in welcoming the arrival of spring. THE BRIDGEWATER-SOMERVILLE CONNECTION PAGE 10 APRIL/MAY 2024 theconnectionsnj.com At nourish.NJ, a Morris County-based non-profit, the heart of our work is conveyed with a promise; we will be there to support anyone who comes to us in need, 365 days a year. We provide this support by offering food, housing, health, and financial stability programs in a warm, safe environment– free of charge, no questions asked. Recognizing that hunger can be a significant barrier to well-being, our goal is to provide immediate relief. We then seek to engage with our clients through compassionate listening and dialogue to understand and help address the root causes of their food insecurity. Creating lasting solutions to hunger, homelessness, and poverty is no easy feat, but we’ve managed to keep our promise for nearly 40 years thanks to the support of compassionate volunteers, donors, and community partners in Morris County and beyond. Currently, a staggering increase in local hunger is making it more difficult than ever for us to ensure that fresh meals are available for all who need them. A record-breaking number of neighbors, especially families with children, depend on nourish.NJ for food access. The demand has increased to 1,000+ meals each day. We are determined to meet this challenge, and with the help of caring New Jersey residents, we know that we can. That’s why we are excited to announce our upcoming Golf Outing– an opportunity to make a meaningful difference while enjoying some friendly competition on the course. Whether a seasoned pro or a first-timer without experience, we invite change-makers from around NJ to join us in helping ensure that every neighbor has access to fresh and healthy food. Participants can register as an individual or as a foursome at www.nourishnj.org. On Thursday, July 18th, participants will gather at the Knoll Country Club/ West in Boonton, NJ for a round of golf that gives back to the community, the format of which will be best ball. Registration and a luncheon reception will take place prior to tee-time at 1PM. In addition to the luncheon, each foursome will receive access to their own golf cart, refreshments throughout the course, a banquet-style awards dinner, and a gift bag. Whether you prefer to register as an individual or with a foursome, we hope that you’ll grab your favorite clubs and join us this summer to help ensure that fresh meals are available for all who need them. Phyllis Blythe opened Blithe Travel on Lincoln Blvd. in Middlesex in April 1964 then moved it to Main Street in Bound Brook across from Loree’s Drug Store. Half of its business came from corporate accounts like GAF and Union Carbide. “But with the movement to create travel departments in-house, our focus shifted to leisure travel – especially cruises, destination weddings, and larger family gatherings,” commented co-owner, Phyllis Blythe. “As we celebrate our 60th anniversary this year, Mom and I are so grateful for the continued support of our long-time clients (and later generations) who trust us with their dream getaways. Our highest priority is to make unforgettable experiences for each individual whether it be an exotic adventure or a simple warm weather retreat,” says co-owner Kendall Blythe. “Over the years we have built strong relationships based on our knowledge and expertise and that has kept people coming back and sending referrals. SHOPPING, DINING, BEAUTY & EVENTS PAGE 16 theconnectionsnj.com CREATIVECORNER Organization Inspiration for Your Stash (Part 2) By Carolyn Hanson know that my stash, etc, will carry on without me.] Now that the area is organized, let’s set goals…. 1. Complete Works in Progress (“WIP”) before starting a new project; and 2. Shop from your stash first. Reality: Seasonal changes, gifting desires, need for something new, the latest trend.…all of these things draw us to put aside the existing project and start another. Solution: Split your time between a WIP and a new project. • Pick a day or time of day to work only on WIPs. Working an hour or more per day/week on a WIP will move it to the completed list in time. Completing projects is a great feeling! • Place a WIP project and a current project into separate project bags beside your favorite chair. Include the needles/hook, pattern, and notions needed. Now they’re ready for quick access or grab-and-go when traveling. • When ready for a new project, consult your spreadsheet first (Part 1). • Switch out patterns if you find something better suited for the yarn. • Go to your yarn bins, and shop from your stash first. You’ve already purchased yarn that you love, so incorporate it into your next new project. Revisit your project spreadsheet annually. If the same WIPs are still on the list, ask yourself…Is it time to start over, donate, sell, or toss? Do the same for bins. In a perfect world, we would work on one project at a time, finish each, and have zero stash. That used to be me. I need my stash now for creative inspiration. I consult my stash with every new project and get a rush when I’m successful in incorporating stash yarn. And a bigger rush when I complete a WIP! FYI. the VNA Rummage Sale at the Far Hills Fairgrounds will be collecting unwanted items in April. This is the perfect time to find a landing place for what you no longer need. Then, go shopping the first week in May. If you have never attended, it’s an experience worth your time and money. Bring a friend, shopping bags and comfortable rain boots. Just a quick recap…. In February, I spoke about how to organize new and unfinished projects, and extra unassigned yarn into bins and project bags. We created a spreadsheet to document all projects. Lastly, we identified and purged unwanted yarn. Now, let’s address patterns, books, needles, hooks, tools, and notions. [The volume at this step is shocking.] Patterns and Books: Patterns published in magazines and books are often available at your local library. If the library carries your knitting and crochet magazines, consider recycling your collection. Magazine access is free through Flipster and can be printed at home. Patterns are also available through Ravelry.com. Do the same with books. Once you’ve made the pattern, ask yourself, “Will I be making this again?” If not, ask yourself if it can be sold or purged. Needles and Hooks: Make a list of all your needles/hooks including size, length, and type (straight, cable, DP). Recycle duplicates. If you have multiple projects that use the same size needles, keep what’s necessary. I no longer use my 16” straight needles. They are useless when traveling (too long) and put too much pressure on my wrists. I still use DPs (double points) rather than 2 sets of circular needles for socks, sleeves, and gloves. Copy the list onto your phone. Then when shopping you’ll know what’s needed and what’s not. Crochet hooks tend to go missing. I’m sure I have 3 of each size in different locations and still can’t find what’s needed. Tools: These specialty items have unique jobs, such as ball winder, swift, knittyknotty, I-cord maker, lace blocking wires, blocking board, looms, utility lights, etc. If they are no longer useful, then purge them. Notions: Stitch markers, bobbins, stitch counters, scissors, rulers, labels, needle protectors (those cute little caps for the ends of needles). Set up several project bags with a set and purge the rest. Finally, “Project Bags.” “Project Bags.” Keep the best, and purge the rest. I may give some to my daughter, who is now a crocheter!!! So happy! [Now I Reality: Seasonal changes, gifting desires, need for something new, the latest trend.…all of these things draw us to put aside the existing project and start another.

New Menu Selections Offered 15% Off Any Lunch Entree To Go (11am-4pm, Mon.-Fri. ONLY) “On a day when the wind is perfect, the sail just needs to open and the world is full of beauty.” The philosopher Rumi said this in the thirteenth century, but it still holds true today. There is no better way to get away from it all and enjoy New Jersey’s beautiful coast than on a sailboat. Sailing is a sport that can be enjoyed by people of all ages and abilities and is something the whole family can do together. If you are looking for a true “staycation” to enjoy with your whole family, look no further than the Raritan Yacht Club. It is family friendly, affordable and makes the joy of sailing accessible to everyone. The second oldest yacht club in the United States, it was founded in 1865 and sits on the Raritan Bay in Perth Amboy. Raritan Bay is only 14 miles from Sandy Hook- a 3 hour sail- but it is quiet with no bridges, locks, or canals to clear, making it the perfect place for beginners to learn to sail or for experienced sailors to race or just enjoy a beautiful day. The Raritan Yacht Club is proud of its legacy and rich nautical history, but it is in no way stuffy or exclusive. Its beautiful waterfront clubhouse is open year round with a full service galley and outdoor seating overlooking the bay. Members get together regularly in the outdoor seating area on the bay or in the clubhouse for live entertainment and game night or for special events like the annual pig roast or shrimp boil. The members love to sail and want to share their love of the sport with others. It’s that simple. To that end, they offer lots of options for members and non-members to learn about the sport. For juniors, they offer a Learn to Sail Program that is open to nonmembers. Classes run in 2- three week sessions, four days a week, from 9:30-3:30pm for kids ages 7-18. Classes start the last week in June and run through the first week in August and cost only $775 for a 3 week session. For more information, contact Gary Myer at garyamyer@gmail.com. They also have an Advanced 420 Racing Program for juniors to continue race training serving as a bridge to high school and college racing. The juniors attend three regattas (two away) and have a practice regatta at the Club. You are never too old to pick up the sport. Raritan Yacht Club offers a training program based on US Sailing’s First Sail Program which is open to members and nonmembers. On any given Wednesday during the season, racing teams are always looking for crew. Going out for a sail and joining in the fun is another great way to learn and to meet great people. One of the most popular programs the Raritan Yacht Club runs is the Boat Share Program. If you do not want the expense or commitment of owning a boat, you can join the Shared Boat Program where, for an annual fee in addition to the cost of membership, you can have access to one of a fleet of five Colgate 26 or a Catalina 250. It is a perfect program for people looking to build experience on a vessel that is capable and safe in a wide variety of conditions. The rentals are available from early May through late October. The best way to fully experience the Club is through membership. There is a special level of membership available for people ages 21- 33 called the Corinthian membership. There is no initiation fee or galley/bar minimum spend and the annual fee is reduced, but they have full access to all membership privileges. If you are curious about what Raritan Yacht Club is all about, email membership@ryc.org. Someone will get back to you and help to arrange an opportunity for you to see the club- maybe come out and join in a race or spend an evening watching the bay. Although the season is from May through October, the clubhouse is open and there are events and activities all year long. It is definitely worth a look. SHOPPING, DINING, BEAUTY & EVENTS PAGE 20 theconnectionsnj.com It is important to me that every day be acknowledged as having value, particularly as time passes more and more quickly each year. It is easy to forget that within each twenty-four hours, much happens or has the potential to happen all around the world, and personally in my world. Slowing down enough to recognize the value of each day is one of my resolutions, and to that end, every day is truly a holiday! My daily calendar this year is so much fun because it celebrates such things as Whipped Cream Day (January 5th) or Lego Day (January 28th) and dozens of obvious or obscure items to be considered. Each morning, as I get my coffee and breakfast together, I rip off the previous page and look with enthusiasm at what is being honored for that day. I typically smile and go on with my puzzles, catching up with the news. But every once in a while, I stop and think about a time in my life the featured holiday brings to memory. National Pizza Day (January 7th) brought back memories of treasured dinners with my father, who adored pizza. His favorite place for the cheesiest of them all was down the shore in Neptune, New Jersey, and we were known to drive the hour to Mom’s Kitchen late at night for a slice…okay, for an entire pie. The oil dripping down my hands as I took my first bite, burning the roof of my mouth mercilessly, slurping an ice cold soda, swirled in my mind. The image of my father, who we lost at a very young 45 years old, as alive and vibrant, pulling the stringy mozzarella from his cheek, brought tears to my eyes, and I felt a thrill flutter in my chest for a moment. Celebrating Cloud Day (January 21st) was surreal because the clouds of late have been quite amazing. High and puffy, white tinged with hints of pink or gray, animals and continents, fruit and amorphous visions all dance in the skies at different times and at different points throughout the day. How did the calendar creator know such images would appear, disappear, and reappear before my eyes on a regular basis? February 2nd is Tater Tot Day and that reminds me of being a young mother, desperately trying to entice my daughters to stop playing long enough to eat dinner. “Tater Tots, Girls,” I would yell with fingers crossed that they would find the salty treat worthy of putting down whatever had their attention. I reminded myself of the commitment I made to “never eat off their plate” as my number one homage to watching my weight. Now I think about the joy I have when we are all in the same place, eating the much more sophisticated foods they enjoy. Tater Tots are replaced by sushi, sashimi, and the like. “When did all of this change?” I ask myself. One of my favorites is February 7th, Send a Card to a Friend Day. I love this because I am blessed with many friends, some I see regularly and some, from time to time. But it also reminds me of my friends I have lost, and how I wish I could send them a card. If this day has reminded me of nothing else, it has pointed out that today is the day to do what is in my heart, not to wait. Somehow, I know in the deepest part of me, that nothing is more important, and I am grateful my calendar reminded me of a loving holiday. THE BRIDGEWATER-SOMERVILLE CONNECTION PAGE 23 APRIL/MAY 2024 theconnectionsnj.com An integral part of a well-designed financial plan is tax management. Each tax season investors look back at the monies paid for taxes and search for better methods to save. Tax efficient investing at Shapiro Financial Group, involves proactive planning, execution, and monitoring. Utilizing 80 years of experience and the depth of Raymond James resources, we seek to construct personalized strategies to minimize taxes for the current investor and for the generations to come. While capital gains are taxed at lower rates than ordinary income, they should be managed. Actively managed mutual funds are not tax efficient and are best served in retirement accounts. Mutual funds pass investors net gains, not losses, and even in years in which the fund may experience a decline in value. A separately managed account (SMA) for stocks or bonds provides the benefits of direct ownership. This includes the opportunity to harvest losses and control capital gains. Tax loss harvesting for fixed income has been timely given the rapid rise in interest rates. Investors have benefited from rising stock prices, some with outsized gains or concentrated positions. Some examples are large positions in mega technology stocks, concreted positions from employment, and embedded gains from an SMA. The sale or diversification of these positions can result in significant tax liabilities. At Raymond James, however, there are Direct Index tools available to help qualified investors. Direct Indexing attempts to maximize after-tax wealth in an SMA. An advantage of the Direct Index is that it can be funded using your existing stock portfolio, cash, or other approved assets. Portfolio managers use active tax loss harvesting techniques to offset realized gains in the portfolio. Tax-managed strategies such as Direct Indexing can help alleviate tax liability, minimize capital gains, and plan for future events. By now, my readers and clients can recognize my affection for tax-free income. When considering marginal combined Federal and State rates, investors would lose more than half of their taxable interest to taxes. A well-constructed professional municipal portfolio includes consideration of credit quality, duration, issuer, call protection, and current cash flow. Here are a few tips. After the expansion of the alternative minimum tax (AMT) exemption, investors should consider the added yield from selected municipal bonds that pay interest subject to AMT. Further, avoid deep discount municipal bonds, which are typically lower than current coupons and may create taxable original issue discount (OID) income. Our practice is skilled in advanced planning techniques. Sophisticated financial plans commonly utilize trust(s) to achieve goals. The step-up market value adjustment at the time of death remains a valuable resource. A common error is funding trusts during one’s lifetime with highly appreciated assets. The beneficiary assumes the donor’s basis, thereby missing out on the stepped-up tax basis adjustment, subjecting the beneficiary to additional capital gains. The current estate and gift tax exemption of $13.61M per person provides relief and opportunity to many. However, this window may close at the end of next year. The exemption is scheduled to revert to prior levels of $5M indexed for inflation. We help clients, along with their legal counsel, design and implement sophisticated financial plans to maximize and retain wealth while minimizing taxes. As a boutique firm, we provide personalized service to our clients. We believe that efficient tax management can add meaningful long-term returns. THE BRIDGEWATER-SOMERVILLE CONNECTION PAGE 25 APRIL/MAY 2024 theconnectionsnj.com Serving the community since 1980, Jewish Family Services, or JFS, is a leading non-sectarian social service agency whose doors are open to the whole community. JFS serves clients of all backgrounds, races, religions, ethnicities, cultures, socio-economic backgrounds, genders, sexual orientations, ages, and physical abilities. It works with clients to address problems, explore alternatives, develop new insights, and find solutions. They offer a continuum of services including the Betty & Arthur Roswell Counseling Center, Holocaust and senior services, family mentors, career counseling, community outreach and education, the Lee Family’s Expanding Horizons program for neurodivergent youth and young adults, and more. JFS relies on its volunteers to get things done. Here are just some of our testimonials so you can understand the impact volunteering can make: A client in the Senior Shopper Program said, “There is not enough room to describe how highly I would praise my volunteer. Briefly, she is a lifeline. I look forward to her weekly visits. She brings food and joy”. Another client in JFS’ Family Mentor Program told us, “(My volunteer) was a wonderful companion. We shared many good conversations. She was very helpful when I had bad days.” Volunteers shared that, “The staff is responsive and supportive of volunteers” and “I appreciate that a qualified, experienced social worker is there for me – and for the families they help.” You can check out all of our volunteering opportunities on our website and click “Volunteer” at the top of jewishfamilysvc.org jewishfamilysvc.org to become a part of the magic of our community. Last year, JFS celebrated services “Across the Lifecycle” at our sold-out Jazz Club. We are going to keep the momentum going with another unforgettable night of entertainment. We’re celebrating the magic of our community with magician Michael Chaut, founder of New York’s longest-running Off-Broadway magic act “Monday Night Magic.” Join us Thursday, May 16 at 7 PM, in Bound Brook for Kosher desserts, drinks, and magic while raising much-needed funds for individuals and families in our community. The rapidly increasing cost of living and ongoing social challenges are making it difficult for our neighbors of all backgrounds and faiths to meet everyday needs. Your support is critical to help us to meet the increasing requests for emergency support, mental health counseling, therapeutic groups, and more. If you are interested in learning more about JFS or would like to get involved, please consider following us on Facebook at www.facebook.com/JFSofSHW, calling (908)725-7799, emailing Admin@JewishFamilySvc.org or visiting our website at www.JewishFamilySvc.org.
