Kate Griffin is a New Jersey-based fine artist. In 2009 she graduated from New Jersey City University with her BA in Drawing & Painting and K-12 Teaching Certification. That year she began teaching at Watchung Hills Regional High School in Warren, New Jersey, and since then has taught almost all of the art electives offered with a focus on painting at the foundations, intermediate, honors and Advanced Placement levels. Since 2019 she has been the advisor of the National Art Honor Society, which encourages art students to share their passion and talent for the arts with their school community. In 2016 she earned her Master’s degree in Studio Art from Kean University. Since then she has been regularly creating and showing work at group and solo exhibitions all over the state. As a way to focus more on her individual painting practice, Kate challenged herself to complete one painting per week for the entire year of 2024. Following themed prompts, each of her 52 paintings, 6x6” in size, explored still life, landscapes and portraits. Boots is #49. There is an indoor Orchid Range which houses a multitude of tropical and subtropical varieties native to the United States as well as a Meditation Garden over a small red footbridge that has Asian-style gardens and water features. If you come to Duke Farms Duke Farms on a Saturday, you may encounter one of their professionals offering a “pop-up class” and talking about what is happening at the Farm that day. If you start at the Orientation Center, located in a historic building that was once a hay and horse barn, you can get maps and information. There is also an app with information on all of the trails, history, and wildlife. Duke Farms’ commitment to sustainability is also evident in the cafe which is open in the Orientation Center. Chef Lauren incorporates ingredients sourced from the farm itself or local to the area. The specials are constantly changing and always fresh. They look like trading cards. Each has a grid design on one side and a color illustration on the other. These themed card decks with interchangeable designs are knit into scarves, cowls, mittens, socks, etc. Themes include Basics like Zig-Zag, Seasons such as Autumn, Locales like Paris, Sports such as Baseball, and so much more. Decks include 51 cards of 2 patterns (standard and infinity cowl) and 40 + designs. This is the vision of Jamie Lomax, who picked up knitting during Covid. She started to create designs, i.e., doodles, to keep her mind busy. One thing led to another and her business, Pacific Knit Co. was born. The intrigue is that ALL of the micro motifs are interchangeable-making the variety of customization endless. The motifs are worked in stripes in the round. Choose your colors by selecting a variety of light, medium, and dark colors. [Tip: To determine if a color is L/M/D, take a color photo of all the chosen colors and then retake the pic in black and white. This makes it so much easier to decipher.] Each motif identifies the number of rows and the number of stitches to complete one pattern. All patterns fit into a 24-stitch repeat. The number of rows for each motif can vary. (See sample below). Stack the patterns one above the other in the order of your choosing, and Vois la! You can even design your own doodle by staying within the 24-stitch guideline. So Fun! Once complete, the finished project will need to be blocked so that the colorwork will relax and any minor puckering can be corrected. Blocking is a finishing technique that uses steam or water (wet blocking) to set the project to the correct size and shape. Once dried, the finished project will be ready to wear. In addition to the decks and book, there are also expansion decks with 24 more designs. Doodle designs are ideal for using up the bits of yarn from prior projects. Note: When doing colorwork, carry the unused yarn along the back. Doodles use only 2 colors per row. Looking at mental flexibility as a muscle to be strengthened may just be the key to aging gracefully. Recognize that bending easily is an incredible strength, not a weakness! As a younger woman, I thought that determination and drive were intrinsic to success. Mentally, physically, and professionally, I believed that they made me strong and tough. Little would stand in my way of completing whatever task was set before me. If I set my alarm for 5:00 a.m. to run six miles before work, then getting out of bed and on the road was going to happen, period. Flexibility was not an option even if I awakened with a sore throat, aching back, headache, or had been up all night with a crying child. I dug in my heels and laced up my shoes. Snow, ice, rain, or wet leaves did not deter me from my goal. If the opposite of being flexible is being rigid, then I was the poster child for rigidity. It kept me on my path to whatever success I needed to achieve. The more I eschewed flexibility, the better about myself I felt. My running clothes were at the foot of my bed, shoes unlaced, daring me to even think about being flexible. No, the run must be done or I was a failure, and that was not an option. As I have aged, however, I realize that there are more variables presented in life than what I have prepared for in many ways. Being sick requires attention to my body. Power comes from taking charge and giving in when it is the better choice. Lots of things all working together nurture my soul as much as my body and mind. Exercise, eating healthy, getting enough rest and deep sleep, even chatting with friends and enjoying a meal together are all essential to a healthy mind, body, and spirit. There are no rewards for overdoing it in the gym, starvation, punishing regimens, or the like. How do we embrace that flexibility at any age positively and begin to build that muscle? Perhaps reframing a “must” to a “maybe I will” is the key. By looking at a situation from a different vantage point, we can impart a more positive view. Rather than feeling tethered to an action, which may cause untenable stress, perhaps we can weigh other options. Recognizing that success or failure is not a line drawn in black magic marker on white paper. It is more likely to be drawn in shades of gray. Building this muscle of flexibility, like all of our muscles, takes time and intention. The good news is that it can be done throughout the day while walking, conversing, or dining with friends. The goal to set may be as simple as “I will enjoy this evening with my family” with little expectation that things need to happen in a certain way. In reality, as a newly minted flexible person, you may find the ride to be as much fun as reaching the destination!
