THE BRIDGEWATER-SOMERVILLE CONNECTION PAGE 8 FEBRUARY/MARCH 2024 theconnectionsnj.com We have all heard this new word go around the dog community-but what does it mean and how does it apply to you? Enrichment is a way to strengthen your dog’s cognitive flexibility through low-stress, fun, and problem-solving-type activities. For dog trainers, this is an essential component of a dog’s set of needs especially when working on a training plan. All needs should be met first! However, it is usually missed as a necessity or is executed in a manner that doesn’t meet the specific dog’s needs. Enrichment isn’t a one-sizefits-all activity. Each breed has its niches and activities its brain needs to complete to feel content. There are 8 steps in the canine predatory motor sequence (PMS): orient, eye, stalk, chase, grab-bite, kill-bite, dissect, and consume. Certain breeds excel in specific parts of this sequence. Border collies excel in the first half, while terriers excel in the last half of the sequence. It is important to know who you’re working with so you can ‘fill their cup’! The reason we like to address the dog’s needs before making a training plan is that most of the time, especially amongst dog owners, the needs of the dog aren’t being metwhich is causing breed-specific behavior problems. We want to be fair and give the dog more opportunities to do what they need to do, and only after that do we start to implement training. Sometimes this is frustrating for owners to hear from their trainer as they want behaviors to be fixed, but unfortunately, the short way isn’t always the best way. It is important to address the root of the problem behavior, not just try to fix the symptoms of the problem. This is especially necessary for puppies and dogs that struggle with anxiety. Enrichment is sometimes looked at as something to do to pass the time or to keep your dog occupied-but we must look at it from a different perspective. It is a learning opportunity and helps us increase our dog’s mental well-being, which we all know is very important for humans-why not for our furry companions? Since genetic testing is becoming more and more popular, let’s use it to see our dogs’ makeup! Especially with mixed breeds, sometimes we are very surprised to know that a small percentage of their genetic composition is the missing piece of the puzzle when facing common behavior issues. Or, we know their makeup, but just don’t know what to do with it! We see a plentiful variety of breeds at My Dog’s Got Class and we can help you come up with enrichment activities for your specific dog. All dogs need enrichment in their lives, and there is a whole load of benefits that come with it once it’s implemented. Don’t be afraid to reach out! Please visit: mydogsgotclass.com or email Adrienne at: info@mydogsgotclass.com. Convert your old media to a digital format and enjoy your family videos on your TV. No DVDs required! It seems that there are more choices we need to make, and they have a greater impact than ever before. While listening to my chosen news programs highlight what I believe to be true, another program may highlight a different view. Every day, I speak with friends whose belief system is contrary to mine, and contrary to what I have chosen to trust as true. And yet, since I respect and admire my friends, I have to strive harder to feel secure in my assessment of situations. Reading what is available, listening to podcasts, and expanding my knowledge all have become tasks I face as overwhelming, yet necessary. My brain doesn’t want to challenge or emotionally depose everyone or everything. My generation had so many fewer choices to make. We had radio when we were children, then black and white television for the financially comfortable, and then color television for the more affluent. We watched entertainment on television. Ed Sullivan entered our living rooms on Sunday nights with comedians, magicians, vocalists, and yes, Elvis Presley, and then, The Beatles! There were sitcoms that had us believe that every family but mine lived the perfect life, and by that, I mean, all problems were solved within 30 minutes. Even the news was a watered-down version of reality. We never saw violence until the Civil Rights Movement or the Vietnam War-at least not to my memory. Riots like Kent State were excerpted to only show students holding STOP THE WAR signs, until the death of four students by the Ohio National Guard during a rally opposing the expanding involvement of the United States in Cambodia. Today, I feel that choosing a cable news station, like so many other subtle choices we make, has become a symbol of our political leanings, and once we declare allegiance to that station, it becomes a betrayal to watch anything else. We are so polarized that we almost have to apologize for our thoughts when in a group that clearly sees the world through a different lens. Moving to a new community last year taught me that I must make the choice to listen, observe body language, and read between the lines before entering a political conversation. Riding in a new couple’s car en route to a restaurant for dinner can give me insight into how they view the same world in which we live. Many meals have teetered on becoming distasteful if certain subjects arise. Choosing to “agree to disagree” has become a mantra, if not a battle cry. Families have deteriorated because of the political divide, and that actually hurts my heart. Members are choosing to believe their way of thinking is more important than another’s way of thinking. How can that be fair? How can we devalue someone close to us for not seeing something the same or even similar? Are we so certain we are right that we would, in fact, rather be right than be loving to each other? I have seen this over and over again over the past several years. It feels as if many will regret their actions when they awaken from their fever dream and have lost relationships that cannot be brought back to life. I am choosing to listen, value, and accept the rights we all have to our beliefs. Here is hoping others will do the same. It feels as if society really needs that to flourish. At least, that is how I choose to see it! SLICE OF LIFE Making Choices By Ellyn Mantell We are so polarized that we almost have to apologize for our thoughts when in a group that clearly sees the world through a different lens.

Identify existing projects: those with yarn and pattern and add to the spreadsheet 2. Identify yarn without patterns - Use Ravelry, pattern books, etc. to locate possible patterns and add to spreadsheet 3. Collections - Keep collections of the same yarn or manufacturer together 4. Odd Balls - Create several labeled bins by needle size, such as: 1-4 (lace, baby, sock, fingering), 5-7 (sport, dk), 8-9 (worsted, aran), 10 +… (bulky, super bulky). - Reorganize the yarn in the Temporary Bin by needle size. Find the needle size on the yarn’s ball band. Needle size roughly identifies the yarn’s weight. [Organizing by needle size allows you to easily match a pattern to available yarn.] Once all is organized and labeled: - Stack bins and place in a dry area away from humidity and odors - Keep a copy of the spreadsheet in the storage area for easy reference. Take a photo with your phone for reference during future shopping sprees - Maintain the spreadsheet, adding and deleting entries as projects come and go Sell/Donate/ : - Sell yarn on eBay, Etsy, Facebook Marketplace and Ravelry. Make sure yarn is free of odors and damage. Sell for 1/2 - 3/4 of purchase price plus shipping costs. - Donate yarn to local groups that knit for charity, rummage and garage sales. - Toss damaged goods, bits and bobs. This is Part 1 of a two part article. Stay tuned for Part 2 in the April issue! Oh, we love to collect yarn. We impulse buy at shows, festivals, closeouts, vacations, new shops and sales in the hopes that the perfect project materializes. I have purchased a few skeins, “just because.” I refer to it as inspiration. Speaking for myself and the size of my stash, there is much waiting for the “perfect project” or let’s be honest, “any project”. Recently, a dear friend, M, asked if I could help her organize her yarn closet. The space included bins, project bags, shopping bags and a closet organizer, all now emptied onto every surface in preparation for a true Marie Kondo culling and organization. KIDZ CONNECTION PAGE 20 theconnectionsnj.com Somewhere in this magazine is a FAKE AD SPOT IT & email your answer to info@theconnectionsnj.com Include your Name, Town & Phone Number Subject Line: FAKE AD OR Go to theconnectionsnj.com to play ONLINE TikTok, Instagram, Snapchat, Messages, WhatsApp…where do I start? These main applications are driving people insane, and they don’t even realize it! It’s pushing people to want to be like everyone else (instead of being who they really are) and has them focusing on their social lives more than their off-screen real lives. “Is my hair nice?”, “Do I look good?”, “Is my outfit trendy?” These are things that many teens ask. Don’t even get me started on makeup. People show teens these worthless products in cool packaging, and put them on the internet. Teens see how sellers make the product look so amazing and how “magically” the product works. Why do teens want the stuff everyone else is getting? Don’t they want to be different from every other girl? The answer is, actually “NO.” Many want to be like every other girl -but better. Buy more, change yourself, and be a better person because of it. Hurry up - start with makeup, then get to the outfits. Get the sweatshirt for $100 and shorts for $68. We feel pressure. We are easy targets for marketing agencies on social media platforms. The one who can show off with the most expensive things is going to be looked up to by others. “Wow, she’s so cool. Look at all this stuff she has.” Ads on TikTok, for example, really get our attention. You can be scrolling through and see this girl wearing a super cute shirt. You look in the comments, and all you see is, “Your shirt is so cute; where did you get it?” “How much is that shirt?” Then you find out it’s $180. Do you want to buy it? Yes! Teen girls will do anything to have something cute that they know other girls want. It’s all they see on social media. Instead of going outside, they write their brains out on a screen! You go to your friend’s posts on some platforms and you think to yourself, “She’s so pretty; I wish I were her.” You don’t think about how many pictures she took before editing that “perfect picture” with filters, or how much makeup she has on to hide her insecurities, or if that picture was photoshopped. Instead, many girls flush their self-esteems down the toilet thinking, “Why don’t I look like that?” “Hey! Check my snap!” “What’s your Snap score?” “Check my story.” “Ewww, she sent me an ugly snap.” One mean cyberbullying comment may ruin your whole day. Some are supposed to help you connect with your friends, but the problem is that you may get too attached to replying, and you can put that over what’s important. Boys are affected by social media, too. It’s easy to turn to social media for the best sneakers and how to get the fluffiest hair! It’s easier to be who everyone else wants you to be, not who you actually are meant to be. Wait, do you even know who you really are? There’s so much pressure to figure it out right NOW. Who are we? The answer is to pick up the device to figure it out. Remember everyone is different in some way…even twins. Different personalities, hair, eyes, and more. You can’t be just like someone else, even if you try your hardest. The truth is, even if you looked exactly like another person, you would probably end up wishing you were just your own, unique, true self. You would realize that you’re good at who you are, and you don’t have to change. Be who you are, and don’t look at your phones to figure it out for you! Isla is in 8th grade at Warren Middle School. She enjoys skiing, lacrosse, volunteering and babysitting. We welcome her first contribution to our editorial family. THE BRIDGEWATER-SOMERVILLE CONNECTION PAGE 22 FEBRUARY/MARCH 2024 theconnectionsnj.com The demands on caregivers are enormous-particularly when the patient is a family member or dear friend. For many, suddenly they are drafted into a position where there is no preparation, no training, and no ability to set boundaries or say “no” when too much is expected of them. I have seen this countless times and recognize that wanting to care for someone isn’t the same as being able or even capable of so doing. As society ages, more and more is expected from a support system. Hospitals and rehab facilities as well as sub-acute nursing homes are understaffed and unable to provide what was considered bare minimal care. Suddenly, spouses, children, and siblings are called upon to do everything for the patient short of charting the meds. Cleaning the room, doing IV infusions at home, and reporting important information are now expected. The guilt is enormous for those unable to keep it together. Setting boundaries may be the key to being successful when a loved one is in extremis. Perhaps the caregiver must let the medical center or facility personnel know of physical or emotional limitations; the caregiver may need to bring along their own source of support; asking for a social worker or patient advocate to provide guidance may be a window into these limitations caregivers frequently feel. Loving a parent, spouse, sibling or child doesn’t mean one is comfortable or even capable of all that may be expected. Post-hospitalization may be a roller coaster for a period of time. The feelings of elation when the patient is released may soon morph into the reality that much aftercare is required. That will hopefully be ameliorated by skilled visiting nurses, physical and occupational therapy, and speech therapy. But if more is required, speaking up-and loudly-may be necessary. In that case, reaching out to the physician, their assistant, or office manager to navigate the return home may be an important tool to assist in recovery. Please remember that although much is expected of caregivers, we can say we need more help. Say it loudly and proudly because your goal is to support the one you love…and that is what this time of life is all about! The feelings of elation when the patient is released may soon morph into the reality that much aftercare is required.
