The Tunnel to Towers Foundation builds mortgage-free smart homes for our most catastrophically injured veterans and rst responders. Each home is designed to address the unique needs of each individual. Smart Homes host a myriad of features such as automated doors and lighting, wid- er halls and doorways, special showers to accommodate wheelchairs, automat- ic door openers, cabinets, counters, and stove tops that can be raised and lowered, back-up generators, and central heating and air conditioning systems that can be controlled by tablets. These homes help our most severe- ly injured veterans and rst responders to reclaim their day-to-day indepen- dence. This year Bench Floors donated ooring materials and installation ser- vices to the construction of the esteemed USMC Sergeant Aaron Alonso’s smart home. Sgt. Alonso grew up in Jefferson Township, New Jersey, and felt the call to serve in the United States Marine Corps post the 9/11 attacks. On February 8, 2014, while on tour in Afghanistan Sgt. Alonso was critically injured after step- ping on an improvised explosive device. Due to injuries sustained in the blast he lost both his legs. Sgt. Alonso loves the outdoors, hunting, shing, and riding his ATV. He is looking forward to spending more time with his daughter and the ac- cessibility of his Smart Home.
