Crystal Zhang is our cover artist. She attends Bridgewater-Raritan High School where she is currently enrolled in an AP Studio Art Class. I love the way she combined many shades of blue and rose to create the forms on the canvas. Her painting is entitled, Aromatic. Crystal’s inspiration for the piece was, “…strong light…hard edges and fascinating color complexities, especially in skin tones.” We thank our readers who love reading our PRINT magazines and also thank those who can easily navigate the vast DIGITAL space to enjoy the issue. She says, “Art has always been a creative outlet for me because it allows me to express ideas that are difficult to articulate with words. Creating art is a liberating and fulfilling experience that has greatly shaped this portion of my life.” Her favorite mediums to work in are acrylic paint and alcohol markers because of their flexibility and versatility. Crystal is especially interested in using her art to spread a positive message to others or shed light on social movements and other important topics. THE BRIDGEWATER-SOMERVILLE CONNECTION PAGE 8 theconnectionsnj.com JUNE/JULY/AUGUST 2023 Now that the warmer weather is upon us, fleas, ticks, and mosquitoes abound and these pose health risks to both pets and people. Here are some things you should know about minimizing these risks. Fleas and Ticks: Fleas and ticks are vectors for a number of diseases that can affect both pet and human health. While we are most aware of them in the spring and summer months, in reality both fleas and ticks can be a year-round problem. They are often able to survive freezing temperatures for extended periods of time and survive even better when they spend the colder months in garages, homes, or living and feeding on wildlife or our pets. Milder winters allow for the survival of many more of last year’s fleas and ticks. Fleas cause annoyance and skin irritation at minimum, but some pets (and people too) can have a serious allergic reaction to flea saliva, which is injected while feeding, and can cause severe itching and hair loss. Feeding fleas also transmit a number of infections from parasites, such as tapeworms, to the more serious bacteria, Bartonella. Bartonella can result in illness, swollen lymph nodes and anemia in pets. Up to 40% of cats have been exposed to the bacteria; however, most do not show any signs unless they develop other immune-compromising disease. These cats can still transmit the bacteria to people, a condition called Cat Scratch Fever, which can result in serious complications in young children and immunocompromised adults. Ticks can transmit even more serious diseases including Lyme disease, Ehrlichiosis, Anaplasmosis, and Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever (RMSF). Tick prevention in our pets is an important factor in reducing risk of infection to our pets and to human family members as well. Mosquitoes: Although usually considered a nuisance, mosquitoes pose a serious health risk to dogs and cats since they transmit heartworm disease. Heartworm disease is present in all 50 states and because mosquitoes easily get into homes, even indoor pets are at risk. Immature worms injected into the blood stream from the bite of an infected mosquito spend the first three months in circulation before establishing themselves in the pulmonary artery, the large blood vessel through which blood travels from the heart to the lungs. There the worms will spend the next 2-4 months growing into mature adults and it is only after this time (5-7 months post-mosquito-bite) that they will be detected on a heartworm test. As adult worms they will mate and produce offspring to be distributed in the pet’s bloodstream where they can be picked up by feeding mosquitoes and passed on to other animals. Both dogs and cats may be affected, although cats tend to have a more aggressive immune response to the infection which can result in a limited number of worms developing to adulthood. This immune response can be so strong that it can cause sudden death in otherwise healthy cats. Historically, heartworm disease has not been particularly common in the Northeast U.S., leading to the misconception that heartworm prevention is not necessary if you live in New Jersey. Because rescue animals are commonly moved around the U.S., the risk of heartworm disease remains ever-present. The delay between when animals are infected and when they test positive further complicates matters since pets that test negative may go undiagnosed for some time, further allowing for mosquitoes in the area to become infected and spread the disease. Heartworm preventatives are widely available by prescription and are extremely safe, effective and typically cost between $6-8/month. Treatment of heartworm disease can cost several thousand dollars, and the treatment itself is also potentially life-threatening. Thankfully, there are many safe and effective options available for flea and tick control as well as heartworm prevention. Products applied topically to the skin, collars, and oral preventatives – many with tasty flavors that are easy to administer - now make flea, tick and heartworm prevention safe and simple. It is best to discuss these with your veterinarian to determine the preventatives best suited to your pet. Products sold through veterinarians tend to be safer and more effective than most overthe-counter products. THE BRIDGEWATER-SOMERVILLE CONNECTION PAGE 10 theconnectionsnj.com JUNE/JULY/AUGUST 2023 Wellness Made Simple Our Services Individualized Counseling Nutrition Plan Session Pantry/Kitchen Home Allergen Detective (Virtual) MRT Food Sensitivity and Intolerance Testing Package Brand + Media Consulting Erica Fand MS, RD, CDN erica@jewelednutrition.com Published Articles: Citykiddies, Enjoy Life Foods Mindbodygreen Packages By Ellyn Mantell The aging process is known to cause dysfunction of so many organs and modalities, and loss of hearing is certainly one of the more serious. Not only does hearing loss affect our ability to communicate, but it also affects our ability to participate in social situations. Hearing loss is also considered a contributor to dementia and Alzheimer’s disease. Research suggests that wearing hearing aids slows down the deterioration of this vital sense. I can remember having audiological evaluations years ago, when I knew I was losing the endings of words. I was scrambling to catch up, stumbling over the present words, as I was trying to grasp the last spoken. My brain felt like it was racing, and yet, according to the audiologist, I “wasn’t ready” for aids. Today, we know there is no “ready for aids” because by not wearing them, we lose even more acuity. At this moment, I embrace my ability to wear my hearing aids, and I appreciate how much larger the world in which I can communicate has become. My rst aids, a few years ago, were quite basic, and perhaps what I needed in order to train my ears and auditory nerve (the nerve that connects the inner ear to the brain and carries sound and balance information) to accept the ampli cation they provided. Recently, however, I knew more was necessary, and my audiologist helped to pair me with a set (binaural, or both ears) that is amazing. These state-of-the-art hearing aids adjust to the world around me without my even realizing, or actually doing anything to make that happen. Admittedly, I was frightened of dealing with the technology that would connect my hearing aids to my phone. I assumed it would feel daunting and disorienting. However, once I opened my mind and allowed the audiologist to walk me (okay…slowly) through the process, I left feeling empowered. I no longer need air pods to speak on the phone, or listen to books on Audible, one of my favorite hobbies. If you are thinking that I actually sound like it is working out well to wear hearing aids, something that always seemed to be a burden, you are right. I will, however, caution you that hearing will de nitely improve, but may never bring one to “perfect hearing”, as glasses may bring one to “perfect vision.” But I can tell you that these tiny ampli ers/microphones are truly amazing, and if this is as near “perfect” as it gets, I am a happy girl! And may I add, there is no magic time to seek the assistance of an audiologist. If you feel you should do it now, then do it now. Better hearing means a much-improved quality of life. The best part is that the next time someone asks, “Can you hear me now?” You will be able to answer, without a doubt, “Yes, I can!” How’s Your Hearing? SENIOR CORNER Better hearing means a much-improved quality of life. The best part is that the next time someone asks, “Can you hear me now?” You will be able to answer, without a doubt, “Yes, I can!”

Without you, we would not be here celebrating our 55th year. Chicken Holiday opened at the Bridgewater location in 1968. What makes our chicken stand out from our competitors is a number of things. Every piece of chicken is hand-breaded on the premises. We use larger chickens averaging 3-1/4 to 3-1/2 lbs. Our chicken is cooked to order in a deep-fry pressure fryer using cholesterol-free, zero trans-fat oil. Advantages to pressure frying is the chicken cooks at a faster pace keeping the moisture in the chicken, which prevents the oil from getting in. Our cooking technique has been often imitated, but you can be sure it will never be duplicated. Another signature trademark is our BBQ pork spare ribs, which are also done from scratch on the premises. We boil the ribs, then cut and trim them. Next, they are marinated in our own sauce before being BBQ’d on the grill. Not to be outdone are our buffalo wings. The wings come already breaded with a spicy, peppery kick to them, and served dry and crunchy with hot sauce, bleu cheese, or ranch on the side. If you like your wings mild, enjoy them just the way they are. For those who like them hot, we give you extra sauce on the side. We also offer chicken ngers or nuggets. A variety of seafood items are also available like shrimp, sh, clam strips, and scallops. Our menu offers a wide variety of affordable meals, ranging from individual lunches and dinners to family packages and party plans. Every order gets the same personal attention-whether it’s 2 pieces or 200 pieces. We also offer side dishes to complete your meal such as french fries, mashed potatoes, mac & cheese, corn on the cob, deep-fried vegetables, mozzarella sticks, potato skins, coleslaw, potato salad, macaroni salad, and many more. Check out our full menu and coupons at chickenholidaybridgewater.com. We also have coupons in The Connection Magazine and many other local advertisements that are delivered to your home. So take a holiday from cooking and let us plan your next meal or party. Party plans are available for any special occasion such as home or of ce parties, birthdays, weddings, reunions, graduations, picnics, BBQs, and more. We are open 7 days a week: Sunday-Thursday, 10:30am-8:00pm and Friday & Saturday 10:30am-9:00pm. We are also open most holidays on an abbreviated schedule, so please call ahead for the hours. We cook to order so we do recommend calling your order in advance for a speedy pick up or feel free to dine in. 691 E. THE BRIDGEWATER-SOMERVILLE CONNECTION PAGE 23 theconnectionsnj.com JUNE/JULY/AUGUST 2023 CigeLaw@gmail.com Spring has sprung! While spring is a reminder of how change can be beautiful, sometimes we are not ready for the change that the seasons bring for our dogs. A majority of the time, these changes for dogs are environmental and can cause skittish reactions to holiday decorations, unfavorable behaviors around guests, or dif culty understanding any of our schedule changes. A lot of the time we overlook how these transitions can affect our furry companions. Some dogs are very sensitive to certain types of environmental change and genetically, some may have an even harder time based on their breed. For example, a herding dog around children could pose problematic behavior or a bulldog breed in the heat could just have a hard time participating in certain activities. Depending on the particular change that is happening, we will determine the best mode of action or preparation needed to set the dog up for success. The challenges in environmental change that springtime brings could put dogs in a stressful state of mind especially if you don’t know what is bothering them. The more of these little stressors that occur over time could lead to a reaction that may seem to come out of nowhere. It is important to look at what is changing in our dogs’ environment at the start of each season so we can better prepare ourselves to help our dogs adjust. For springtime especially, more people are spending time outside - as well as their dogs! However, even such a simple thing could be a trigger for our dogs because they just got used to walking or doing outside activities in the winter with fewer people and dogs to worry about. This could possibly be termed as a lack of neutrality when it has to do with excessive excitement or heightened fear around the increase in people and dogs outside. A change in behavior like this can show that your dog needs your assistance in managing their emotions. It is very important to consider your dog’s emotional state of mind when reacting to triggers in order to be able to properly tackle the issue. Aside from simply having more people outside enjoying the emerging beautiful weather, these people may also be looking very different. Some may have hats, some may be moving at different speeds (jogging or walking), some may have wheels (bikes or skateboards), some may have a backpack because they’re walking to school, some may have a walker or a cane, and even just being different in size (women vs. men vs. children), etc. could affect our dogs’ reactions to them. On top of that, there are various other dogs also enjoying the outdoors with their owners. All dogs are different! They all have different personalities, preferences, past traumas or experiences, and learned behaviors that lead to not inherently getting along with every dog they encounter. It is important to know these things about your dog so you can help them tackle day to day stressors and strengthen your bond together. To dogs, people aren’t just people, and other dogs certainly aren’t just other dogs. If your dog seems to be having big feelings when seeing people or dogs outside or even just passing by your yard, let My Dog’s Got Class help you dissect what’s going on so we can help create a management, training, and desensitization plan for you! Seasonal Changes Could Bring Behavioral Changes A lot of the time we overlook how these transitions can affect our furry companions. Some dogs are very sensitive to certain types of environmental change and genetically, some may have an even harder time based on their breed. PETS’ CORNER By Polina Semenoff, CPDT-KA

See www.ckibbnj.org for our calendar and more about CKI. Over the past year, Congregation Knesseth Israel in Bound Brook has been celebrating their 100th Anniversary. Events kicked off in June of 2022 with a carnival held on the front lawn. Current and past members of the synagogue enjoyed a day in the sun with a BBQ and other refreshments, games, a DJ, and live music provided by CKI’s Cantor Roffman. In February, congregants, friends, former members, and Hebrew school alumni took part in a reunion Shabbat morning service and socialized afterward at a Kiddush luncheon. The nal anniversary celebration was an elegant evening Gala in June of 2023, with music and dancing, hors d’oeuvres, and a dessert buffet. The synagogue’s past was on display with photographs, a slideshow, and historic items. These three events were facilitated by a grant received from the Jewish Federation of Somerset, Hunterdon, and Warren Counties. Bound Brook has one of the oldest known Jewish communities in New Jersey, and in the past many of the town’s residents, shopkeepers, and professionals were members of the congregation. Currently, members of CKI live in Bound Brook and many other towns in the surrounding area. The congregation’s origins go back to the 1920s when it was established as “The Jacob H. Schiff Congregation.” By 1923, members of the Women’s Social Circle had raised money for a down payment toward the purchase of an existing house and property at 229 Mountain Avenue. In 1953, the congregation adopted two new names: the “Bound Brook Jewish Center” and “Knesseth Israel,” and in 1954 construction of a new building on the property began. In the early 1980s the building was expanded to include a chapel, new of ces for the Rabbi and temple administrator, a youth lounge, and additional restrooms. The congregation was Orthodox from the 1920s until the 1960s when it joined the Conservative movement. Currently, CKI is not of - cially af liated with any of the movements, and its members come from a variety of Jewish traditions and backgrounds. CKI is an egalitarian congregation that welcomes all who are part of a Jewish family, including interfaith families. The members of the congregation, led by Rabbi Stephen Wylen and Cantor Eddie Roffman, fondly call CKI their “Mighty, Little Synagogue,” and gather regularly for Shabbat worship, Jewish Holiday celebrations, educational programs, dinners, and social events. Guests are always very welcome to attend services and events. Shabbat services are held Fridays at 8:00 pm throughout the year. Saturday morning services followed by lunch and Torah study with Rabbi Wylen are usually scheduled once a month. Monthly continuing education programs include book discussions and classes on a wide range of cultural and historical Jewish topics. The full calendar of services and events can be found online at www.ckibbnj.org, along with more information about the synagogue. CKI takes pride in the wide range of services provided to the membership while keeping dues among the lowest in the area. They believe that temple membership should be within everyone’s reach, and there are special introductory dues rates for new members, as well as reduced dues for seniors and for young adults up to age 30.CKI is located at 229 Mountain Avenue in Bound Brook. Please email info@ckibbnj.org or call 732-469-0934 for more information about the synagogue’s events, services, or membership details. Marla Lecin serves as the Publicity Chairperson for CKI. KIDZ CONNECTION PAGE 26 theconnectionsnj.com By Joanne Kleinle Battling the Boredom Blues The days are getting longer. The sun is getting stronger. School is letting out soon… now what do we do? The family vacations, camps, and pool memberships that you have likely already lined up will ll up most of the days. As any experienced parent knows; however, no matter how much you plan, there is no guarantee that you will not hear the wail of “I’m bored!” every once in a while. The solution? Be prepared and stash a few ideas for some fun day trips in your back pocket- just in case. If your kids (or you!) like to explore, there is a little-known treasure that is only about an hour away-Lost River Caverns. Located in Hellertown, PA, these caverns were an active limestone quarry for a brief period in the late nineteenth century. Since then, the beautiful rock formations and hidden passages have served as everything from a place for bootleggers to store their wares during Prohibition to a place to hold dances. The caverns have a consistent temperature of 52 degrees. The natural air conditioning offers relief on the hottest of summer afternoons or something active to do on a rainy afternoon. One large “room” was even dedicated as the “Crystal Chapel” and was a site for over 100 ceremonies from 1949 until 2009. There are 30-45 minute tours daily from 11 am until 4:30 pm. You must reserve ahead on weekends and holidays- and remember to bring a sweater! A little closer to home, there is the perfect activity to bring a little peace and relaxation to your day while working off some nervous energy. Everyone knows the fun that can be had at the Turtle Back Zoo. The zoo is on a beautiful park complex. What is less known is that there are Swan Paddle Boats available for rent. The Paddle Boat Launch is located on the shore of the Orange Reservoir. There is a fee for a two-person or four-person boat. The boats are shaped like swans and you paddle your way around the scenic reservoir. Tickets can be purchased with cash or credit at the Boat Hut. They are not available in advance. Just a note-children under two and pets are not permitted, and the boats do not operate in certain weather conditions like high winds, heavy rain, or lightning, so plan accordingly. How about those summer nights? If you are feeling a bit nostalgic and want to give your kids a taste of a simpler time-how about a drivein movie? This is something the whole family can experience together. Family Drive-In Movie nights are offered free at Billian Legion Park, 548 East Main Street in Bound Brook. Space is limited and registration is required so go to the website at downtownboundbrook.com/ events to get more information and to register. Just over the border in New York, there is the Warwick Drive-In. It is a vintage drive-in movie theater with three screens showing six different movies each nightwith movies that cater to every age. Check out the website at www.warwickdrivein.com/ for more information. If you are game for a short road trip, the Cowtown Rodeo is definitely worth it!
