THE BRIDGEWATER-SOMERVILLE CONNECTION PAGE 6 JUNE/JULY/AUGUST 2024 A Note From Our Publisher... Amelia Ludwig Title: Girl's Night Out My name is Amelia Ludwig. I am currently enrolled in Mrs. Wezyk’s AP Studio Art and Design class at Bridgewater Raritan High School. I will be attending Penn State University in the Fall of 2024, with a plan to double major in Art Education and Fine Arts. Recently, I received my Girl Scout Gold Award. My project focused on bringing art into a community that did not previously have the opportunity to be creative. I am a member of the National Art Honors Society, National Honors Society, and Thespian Honors Society. My work has been recognized in the National Art Honors Society Newsletter and Juried Art Exhibition. In addition, I received an Honorable Mention in AANJ’s Exhibition at Kean University. Shortly after, I had the same piece featured in the Morris Museum from March to May of 2024. I immersed myself in theater throughout high school as a dancer for the Spring Musicals and Thespian Honors Society shows. Outside of school, I take dance classes every day and perform with many dance teams throughout the year. This is my fifteenth year as a dancer, and I am excited to continue dancing and painting in the future. ON OUR COVER As we embark on summer and the school year comes to a close with graduation season approaching, we are thrilled to bring you a special June issue of the Bridgewater-Somerville Connection. This issue will honor the achievements of the talented students in our community. We have chosen stunning artwork created by students from our very own local school district on the cover. Their artwork serves as a visual representation of the creativity and potential that exists within our local young adults. In addition to highlighting these remarkable students, we want to make your graduation celebrations even more memorable. We have curated a selection of local restaurants that are perfect for hosting graduation dinners, parties and other celebratory gatherings. The businesses in our community are the heart and soul of our neighborhoods, o ering unique products, services and experiences that you won’t find anywhere else. We encourage you to support these local gems and discover the hidden treasures they have to o er. In keeping with student achievement and graduation as this issue’s theme, we have chosen student- writer Maxwell Silver’s article as our Teen Voice column. It is apropos for the June issue as he discusses the highs and lows of transitioning from middle school to high school. All rising freshmen will benefit from and relate to his reflections and anticipations. Is your ego getting in the way of having a well-behaved dog? Read Pets’ Corner, “Reasons for Your Dog’s Bad Behavior: Your Ego Vs. Knowledge,” to elucidate the idea of “learning to speak your dog’s language first, before teaching your dog yours.” Dog trainers typically teach the parents first, before training their dog. The author explains that long-lasting outcomes result from education and compassion. The vibrantly colored artwork on our cover is titled, Girl’s Night Out. It is an acrylic painting by Bridgewater-Raritan High School student, Amelia Ludwig. She says her inspiration for the piece is what her belongings usually look like after a fun night out with friends! Amelia explains, “I wanted to capture the staple feeling of girlhood with vivid colors, dreamlike shadows, extreme highlights and a skewed composition.” When you visit any of our featured businesses, please let them know that you discovered them through our magazine. By doing so, you not only support these local establishments, but also help us continue to spread the word about their exceptional products and services. Trust us to be your go-to resource for all things local and small business-related. Please join us in celebrating the beginning of summer and the remarkable local businesses that make our neighborhood shine. Wishing you a summer filled with warmth, joy and countless memories. Shapiro Financial Group is not a registered broker/dealer and is independent of Raymond James Financial Services. Asubstantial portion of today’s and future wealth is in individual retirement accounts, commonly referred to as IRAs. IRA accounts have grown, via annual contributions, rollovers from qualified plans, and compounding of investment returns. IRA accounts are titled in the name of an individual or as a beneficiary IRA. These accounts are never titled in joint ownership. IRA owners should pay particular attention to the beneficiary form attributable to the account. The beneficiary form will determine how the assets of the account are distributed, in the event of the account holder’s death. Although IRA assets are included in a decedent’s estate, IRA accounts are not administered by will or trust but rather by the beneficiary form. It is important to review your beneficiary form for life events and best to name both primary and contingent beneficiaries. There are 2 primary types of IRAs-traditional (deductible), which is funded pretax, and Roth, which is funded post-tax. In simple terms, an individual who contributes to a Traditional IRA receives a current tax deduction for annual contributions and the amounts grow tax-deferred. Distributions are taxable when taken. In contrast, Roth IRA contributions do not provide a current tax deduction, are viewed as utilizing after-tax dollars, and grow tax-deferred. However, Qualified Roth distributions are not subject to income tax. IRS rules for Qualified Roth distributions include distribution after 5 years and attainment of age 59 1/2. Hence Roth IRAs are characterized as tax-free growth. For 2024, annual IRA contribution limits are $7000 plus an additional $1000 for those 50 and older. If covered by an employer-sponsored plan such as a 401(K), you will be subject to limitations on annual IRA contributions. However, annual contribution limits to employer-sponsored plans are greater. Most 401(K) plans provide an employee option to contribute pre- or post-tax dollars. For 2024, employee contribution limits are $23,000 plus an additional $7,000 for those 50 and older. The selection of Traditional IRA versus Roth IRA, or pre-tax vs. post-tax, is a complex calculation. Further eligible individuals have a taxable option to convert traditional IRA assets to Roth IRA assets. At Shapiro Shapiro Financial Group we share a unique ability to carefully evaluate these choices for our clients. In part, we will consider participants’ needs, current and projected tax rates, asset allocation, age, net worth, and beneficiary. A well-constructed retirement plan potentially includes 2 buckets of retirement income, both taxable and nontaxable. Traditional IRAs are subject to Required Minimum Distributions (RMD). Beginning in 2023, the SECURE 2.0 Act raised the age at which you must begin taking RMDs to age 73. If you have already started taking RMDs, you will continue. Traditional beneficiary IRAs have separate distribution rules. RMDs are calculated using IRS tables which increase with age and are applied to prior year-ending balances. Traditional IRA distributions are taxable and should be well-planned. If you are philanthropic, you can donate your RMD up to $100,000 to charity, effectively reducing your taxes by lower adjusted gross income. We carefully calculate and monitor RMD administration for our clients. Traditional and Roth IRAs have grown to represent a sizable portion of investors’ wealth and retirement income. At Shapiro Shapiro Financial Group, we utilize 80 years of experience and the depth of Raymond James resources to construct personalized strategies for the current investor and generations to come. As a boutique firm, we provide personalized service to our clients. We believe that efficient tax management can add meaningful longterm returns. THE BRIDGEWATER-SOMERVILLE CONNECTION PAGE 10 JUNE/JULY/AUGUST 2024 theconnectionsnj.com When your dog is doing something that is bothering you, do you ask yourself, “How do I get him to stop?” or do you ask, “Why is he doing that?” Many pet owners subconsciously get into the habit of wanting to stop behaviors without thinking about the ‘why’ behind them. By addressing problem behaviors with “how to stop it” instead of “why is it happening”, we may let the problem behavior brew into something more complex. This, in turn, makes the problem even more difficult to tackle. If problem behaviors are first addressed with a “why is this happening” mindset, the situation can be tackled at its root. If we address our dogs’ behaviors with knowledge and compassion, we have a higher likelihood of successfully changing the problem behavior. If we let our ego take over, we may blame the dog for behaviors that we might have inadvertently caused by creating the environment for them. For example, we may think that our dog is stubborn or difficult when in reality there could be a combination of underlying circumstances leading to the issue. It could be, among other things, a health or wellness issue, stress or fear, too many distractions, unclear criteria, our lack of management, or even our misunderstanding of their body language. When we fail to consider this handful of circumstances, we get frustrated and our pride takes over as a defensive response. It is important to catch ourselves in this moment and consider the dog we have in front of us. Did we unintentionally set him up to fail? Have we practiced in these conditions? Did we manage the environment to the best of our ability? These are just a few questions to ask before becoming frustrated. Being aware of our own impulses, weaknesses, and emotions can be the first step to changing our dog’s behavior. I start with how we ask our dog certain things. Is it a command or a cue? Is it a question, request, or suggestion? All of these imply certain conditions; what have we done to meet them? Next, how do you view your training? Is it obedience or leadership and caretaking? Does your dog have agency and choice to help with learning through positive reinforcement and environmental management or is it “do it or else”? What about respect? Do they know what that is or does trust and safety sound a bit better? Dog training starts with people training. SUMMER FUN & FINDS PAGE 22 theconnectionsnj.com Perhaps for many, there is no choice…they want both. And I understand that. However, there are times, perhaps many, when I need to decide what is more important, because both may not be possible at the same time. Rather than digging in my heels, I take a giant step back and look at the bigger picture. Regardless of how thin we slice something, there are always two sides to it, and either, or both, have merit. We all see things differently based on our life experiences, our expectations, and our vision of the world. In most situations, we can accept that reality. But there are times when emotions take over, and they propel us to choose a viewpoint and stand by that choice. Standing for our beliefs may make us right, but will it make us happy? For the most part, unless I would be untrue to my moral compass, I choose happy! That may mean accepting someone else’s view on something, rather than trying to have them lean into mine. That may also mean saying I am wrong in my understanding of a situation. Recognizing I have a choice is empowering; recognizing I am not losing, and I am winning, is the goal. Having adult children has been my road map for growth in this area. They may very well see things differently than I do. We are of a different generation and have had many life experiences that have shaped each of us. They have created their world in their image, just as my husband and I did at their age. My goal is not to teach them my ways at this point. I am most grateful they have the patience to teach me theirs. Acceptance of this has helped us to be closer than ever, I believe, because there is no tug of war, no “I am right…you are wrong.” Each generation believes they are “reinventing the wheel” and that makes them feel powerful. They also believe they know the “right way” or perhaps the “only way” to do things. We can all learn from each other if we want to learn, and not simply be right. Perhaps the most important acknowledgment of all at this point in life is that every day is a gift, and I want that gift to be placed in a lovely box and wrapped in beautiful shiny paper, reflective of happiness. There is little I can do to change the world. Those days are long gone. I recognize that. I want my little corner of the world to be a better place, however, and I can do that by choosing to not fight so hard to be right- rather to be grateful I can be happy. SLICE OF LIFE Choosing Happy Over Right By Ellyn Mantell Perhaps the most important acknowledgment of all at this point in life is that every day is a gift, and I want that gift to be placed in a lovely box and wrapped in beautiful shiny paper, reflective of happiness. SUMMER FUN & FINDS PAGE 23 theconnectionsnj.com For those not familiar with the Warren Warren County Farmers’ Fair, it is a nostalgic event that happens annually, from Saturday to Saturday, the week of August 1st. Normally sandwiched between a popular hot air balloon festival on hiatus for 2024, and a large music festival in Lehigh Valley, PA, the event can easily be overlooked. It’s a place that makes visitors feel like they have traveled back in time before cell phones and selfies were a thing that consumed people. In fact, until a few years ago, online tickets and credit card machines at the gate were unheard of. The organizers are like a family that has its ups and downs, but when a storm hit the Fairgrounds two weeks before the 2023 event, they all pulled together. Family, friends, neighbors, and local businesses worked as a team to get the Fairgrounds dried up, cleaned up, and prettied up for its 85th year. The event has roots back to 1859, but the Warren County Farmers’ Fair Association was officially created in 1937. This year the Warren County Farmers’ Fair is celebrating its 86th year. If you are quick at math you might be saying, “That math doesn’t add up.” That’s because of 2020. (Do we really want to talk about that year?) Only positive things grew out of the experience for the Warren Warren County Farmers’ Fair. The year the Fair shut down, local balloon pilots and organizers saw CONNECTION COMMENDS no reason to let indoor restrictions stop this outdoor activity. Long-time sponsor, Warren Community College in Washington, New Jersey, hosted the event, with the blessing of the Fair Directors! The College highlighted its expansive Drone/Robotics/AI program at the Fair. They welcomed the balloon festival for what was thought to be a smaller, onetime event to bridge the gap in years and keep the Fair on people’s minds. This bold move, however, expanded the Fair. Today, Warren Warren County Farmers’ Fair boasts three hot air balloon festivals. Two of the three events happen on the grounds of Warren Community College and help promote Warren UAS - a program that prepares students for high-paying jobs in multiple industries. The Warren County Farmers’ Fair Warren County Farmers’ Fair has changed with the times. Over the years, the Fair has reduced its focus on agriculture, perhaps due to less farming and more demand on farmers for time. They have added related events like truck pulls and demolition derbies. Car and truck shows complement the tractor pulls that run multiple days during the week. They have added musical entertainment with both rock and country performances. They have invested substantially in building the Kids’ Corral, where children enjoy shows, crafts, entertainment, and more, all at no charge to visiting families. Organizers have done all of this while keeping admission low and affordable-and with free parking! Much like the addition of the hot air balloon festival, all these events provide something appealing to all types of people. Visitors travel from hours away now, starting new family traditions. By expanding its offerings while staying true to its agricultural roots, the organizers of the Warren County Farmers’ Warren County Farmers’ Fair have been able to continue to deliver 86 years of Family Tradition! They look forward to seeing you from Saturday, July 27 to Saturday, August 3, in the town of Harmony, in beautiful Warren County New Jersey. SUMMER FUN & FINDS PAGE 26 theconnectionsnj.com Mark your calendars! This summer isjam-packed with great opportunities to expose your family and friends to the arts - for free! Whether it is comedy, musicals, or dancing and live music under the stars- it is right in your backyard and a wonderful way to enjoy a summer evening outdoors with family and friends. “Without our traditions, our lives would be as shaky as a fiddler on the roof!” So says the beloved family musical, Fiddler on the Roof Fiddler on the Roof. One tradition that is going strong is the Plays Plays in the Park at the amphitheater in Pleasant Valley Park in Basking Ridge. In its 37th year, this long-standing tradition of presenting open-air theater free of charge is continuing with Trilogy Repertory Company’s productions, Fiddler on the Roof Fiddler on the Roof and Shakespeare in Shakespeare in Hollywood. The series is funded by donations, Bernards Township Parks and Recreation, and a grant from the Somerset County Cultural and Heritage Commission. Fiddler on the Roof will be performed on July 11, 12, 13, 18, 19, and 20. This classic musical is sure to enthrall people of all ages with its endearing story set in a Jewish village in pre-revolutionary Russia. A poor milkman, determined to find good husbands for his five daughters, consults the traditional village matchmaker. His daughters have their own ideas on the subject. Its messages about struggle and tradition versus change are still relevant today. What will really captivate the audience, though, is the music. Songs like “Matchmaker, Matchmaker,” “If I Were a Rich Man” and “Do You Love Me?” will have you smiling, tapping your feet, and humming the tune for days afterward. No one does it better than the award-winning Trilogy Repertory, with its talented cast, live orchestra, and the direction of Jaye Barre. On July 26, 27, and August 1, 2, and 3, the fun will continue with Ken Ludwig’s Shakespeare in Hollywood. Produced by Peter Curley, this hilarious farce is a tale that finds two characters from Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream, Oberon, king of the fairies, and Puck, his right-hand man, lost in time on their way back to the Arden forest. They find themselves smack-dab in the middle of a Hollywood set in the 1930s. As Puck would say, “Lord what fools these mortals be!” as chaos ensues including mistaken identities, mismatched couples, romances gone awry, and a dizzying swirl of characters running amok - all making for laugh-out-loud fun for the whole family. These shows are presented on an outdoor stage in Pleasant Valley Park. They begin at 8 pm. Seating is on a first-come, first-served basis, on a sloping lawn in front of the stage. Bring lawn chairs and blankets, snacks, and bug spray (this is New Jersey in the summer after all!). Although the park is well-lit, it is helpful to have a flashlight for when you are exiting, and, if you have little ones, glow necklaces help to make them easy to spot!! How about live music? If you love live music, you do not have to pay a fortune for tickets at PNC or MetLife. Check your town’s Parks and Recreation website. Most towns sponsor live music from really talented cover bands. If your town does not, chances are that one of your neighboring towns does. These open-air concerts are a great date night, get-together with friends, or a place to let the kids run around, dance, and burn off some energy before dropping into bed! Like the Plays in the Plays in the Park, you should come early with your own chair or blanket and bring your own refreshments. Although there might be an ice cream truck stopping by, there are not likely to be any other vendors. Check with the sponsoring Parks Department for details. So scope out dreamy, midsummer entertainment offered by our local towns. Young or old, single, part of a couple or a family, you should get out there this summer and enjoy our area’s tradition of free outdoor theater and music! theconnectionsnj.com HEALTH & WELLNESS PAGE 31 The weather is nicer, plants are blooming, and we’re all more active. This is how we’re meant to live-active and well. However, the wellness component evades many of us more than we like to admit. It’s never too late for you to put an end to the drowsiness, aches, and pains that hold you back and make your wellness a priority. Here at Vital Brain & Spine, even our oldest patient (over 100 years old!) saw remarkable improvements. We take our cars to the shop for an oil change before the engine seizes. We straighten up the house before there is no room left to walk. But many of us have a hesitancy to view healthcare as something with viable preventative options. We often just see the doctor as a means of correcting a problem that’s already reared its head. Yes, we help many individuals find relief from an array of neurologic and autonomic symptoms. Improving your structural alignment, however, reduces strain on the nervous system and thereby also helps individuals optimize their whole body function. While NUCCA care focuses narrowly on treating a single part of your body (aligning your head and neck), the downstream effects of that treatment are broad. Some of the positive results of NUCCA care include: • Improved blood flow in and out of your brain • Reduced wear and tear (arthritis) on your joints • Decreased muscular strain • Improved balance by addressing musculoskeletal and vestibulocochlear root causes Addressing these areas has profound effects on our quality of lifeeven if you are not actively symptomatic. Many new patients report relief of subtle symptoms they never realized they had until they were gone. The gentle, non-cracking chiropractic subspecialty of “NUCCA” uses image-guided biomechanics to restore symmetrical nerve and muscle function. The process of healing that follows can have a significant range of effects like reduced blood pressure and heart rate, improved balance, or deeper sleep. Getting started under NUCCA may be the thing that helps you break your cycle of discomfort and get back to the active lifestyle you desire. Want to know more about the potential for your life under NUCCA care? Schedule a free consultation with us so we can go over your history and symptoms, answer your questions, and ultimately help you decide if NUCCA care is right for you.
