As summer begins, our communities come alive with outdoor dining, local events, and family fun. The Bridgewater-Somerville edition of our June/Summer issue is filled with local businesses, restaurants, activities, and services to help you make the most of the season. One of our featured sections this summer is our special Wine & Dine Directory, highlighting many outstanding restaurants throughout the communities we proudly serve. Whether you are revisiting a favorite spot or trying somewhere new, summer is the ideal time to enjoy local dining and support the businesses that make our towns unique. We are also proud supporters of Warren Restaurant Week and encourage our readers to participate in the Restaurant Passport Program and experience the wonderful restaurants featured throughout the event. Warren Restaurant Week takes place from June 12-26. Please see featured ads from participating restaurants in our Warren edition, as well as online. Summer is also the perfect time to refresh your home, complete projects, explore camps and tutoring programs, and discover new local services. Whether you are dining out, planning summer activities for your family, or looking for trusted local professionals, we hope this issue becomes your guide all summer long. The intriguing painting on the cover of this issue was painted by Danella Haro-Aguayo. Titled Old Colonial Door, this piece invites the viewer to wonder what lies beyond and the stories that could be told from what has occurred within. Danella explains she was inspired, "by my deep belief that age does not lessen value-it reveals it." Danella’s words of wisdom ring true! America turns 250 this summer! To help you celebrate this milestone, our latest Family Adventures column features an extensive guide by Joanne Kleinle. The article includes a curated list of places to visit and ways to celebrate, all while incorporating fascinating historical context. We invite you to read the full column to start planning your commemorative trips and activities. Happy 250th, America! Please read our Miles of Meaning column by Walter Yosafat of Jewish Family Services. It is a touching story of giving back to this social service agency in a way that has so much significance. Walter’s parents were Holocaust survivors, and JFS was there to provide the care, support, coordination and resources that made it possible to move to Ohio. Years later Walter donated his prized possessions-a VW Bug and Bus-to the same agency that helped his family. Please consider donating to help fund essential services for other families in need. Most importantly, we encourage everyone to continue supporting local businesses. When visiting our featured advertisers, please let them know you discovered them through The Connection Magazine. #TellThemWeSentYou! Your support helps strengthen the businesses and communities we all love. Shop Local. Dine Local. Support Local. Wishing you and your family a safe, happy, and memorable summer! THE BRIDGEWATER-SOMERVILLE CONNECTION PAGE 8 JUNE/JULY/AUGUST 2026 theconnectionsnj.com hen Knee Pain Lingers Longer Than It Should Many patients come to Performance Ortho with the same concern: their knee pain has not improved, even after weeks or months of rest, therapy, or injections. What starts as a minor issue can gradually become a daily limitation, affecting how you walk, exercise, and move through life. Chronic knee pain is rarely just about overuse or aging. In many cases, it is a sign that the underlying problem has not been properly addressed. Without the right approach, symptoms can continue to return, creating a frustrating cycle of temporary relief followed by recurring discomfort. Common Signs Your Knee Pain Is Not Resolving Persistent knee pain often presents in ways that interfere with normal activity. Patients commonly report: • Dull, achy pain even at rest • Increased discomfort during walking, climbing stairs, or exercise • Ongoing reliance on pain medication for relief Stiffness, weakness, and difficulty bearing weight are also common. Over time, these symptoms can worsen if the root cause is not treated effectively. Why Traditional Treatments Often Fall Short Conventional treatments like physical therapy and cortisone injections can play an important role early on for acute pain relief. However, they are often designed to manage symptoms rather than repair the underlying issue, which is frequently joint degeneration or chronic tendon damage. This is why many patients experience short-term improvement, only to have the pain return weeks later. At Performance Ortho, the focus is different. Care begins with a comprehensive evaluation to identify the true source of pain. From there, a personalized treatment plan is built to restore function and promote long-term healing. Focused Shockwave Therapy: A More Targeted Approach to Knee Pain Relief One of the most effective non-surgical solutions we offer is Focused Shockwave Therapy. This FDA-cleared treatment uses high-energy acoustic waves to stimulate the body’s natural healing response within the knee. By increasing blood flow and activating cellular repair processes, Shockwave Therapy helps address damaged tendons, ligaments, and joint structures at the source. It is particularly effective for patients whose pain has not improved with rest, therapy, or injections alone. Many patients notice meaningful improvements in pain, stability, and mobility early in the treatment process. When appropriate, Shockwave Therapy can also be combined with regenerative medicine options such as platelet-rich plasma or other biologic treatments to support longer-term outcomes. Dr. Thomas explains, “Persistent knee pain is often a sign that the body has stopped healing efficiently. Our goal is to restart that process in a targeted way so patients can recover function, not just manage symptoms.” Who Is a Good Candidate for Shockwave Therapy? Shockwave Therapy is often a strong option for patients who have been dealing with knee pain that has not responded to conservative care. It is especially beneficial for those looking to avoid surgery and return to activity safely. Patients experiencing chronic tendon irritation, early joint degeneration, or lingering pain after injury are often ideal candidates. A proper evaluation is essential to determine if this treatment is the right fit. Benefits of Shockwave Therapy • Covered by Medicare and most insurances • Precise and targeted treatment • Non-invasive with no downtime • Designed to reach deep tissue structures • No reliance on medications or injections Next Steps Performance Ortho specializes in non-surgical, evidence-based treatments designed to help patients move better and live without pain. If your knee pain is not improving, it may be time to explore a more advanced approach. We offer no-cost insurance verification and transparent pricing to make your care experience as simple as possible. Meet Your Expert: Dr. Chris Thomas Dr. Thomas specializes in interventional pain management and non-surgical orthopedic care. THE BRIDGEWATER-SOMERVILLE CONNECTION PAGE 10 JUNE/JULY/AUGUST 2026 theconnectionsnj.com or more than 100 years, families throughout the Somerset Hills have placed their trust in Holy Cross Cemetery as a peaceful resting place for their loved ones. Before Holy Cross opened in 1924, Catholic families in the area relied on cemeteries that were nearly a two-hour round trip from Bernardsville. The community needed a cemetery closer to home. In early 1923, Our Lady of Perpetual Help Church in Bernardsville began exploring the purchase of a 22-acre property owned by William and Ellen Ryan. By October of that year, the parish received state approval to establish a cemetery, and the land was officially acquired. The first burials took place on Sunday, April 27, 1924, when mourners gathered to lay to rest Miss Maud L. Drummond, Mrs. Henry Lawer (Agnes), and Miss Marion K. Boudrean. Stewardship Rooted in Tradition For a century, Holy Cross Cemetery has been more than a final resting place. It has been a reflection of the values of the community it serves. Each generation has entrusted the cemetery with preserving memories, honoring faith traditions, and maintaining a space of dignity and respect. That responsibility continues today through thoughtful planning, careful maintenance, and a commitment to serving families with compassion and understanding at every stage of need. A Peaceful Setting for Generations Today, Holy Cross Cemetery continues its mission of compassionate service to families in Somerset Hills and the surrounding communities. Visitors often share how peaceful and welcoming the cemetery feels—a reflection of both the natural beauty of the grounds and the care provided by our dedicated team. Conveniently located off I-287 and Mount Airy Road, the surroundings are embraced on all sides by forest. In spring, vibrant azaleas, forsythia, and flowering shrubs brighten the landscape, bringing the grounds to life with color. Our staff maintains the cemetery yearround, ensuring a serene and respectful environment every season. Recent improvements include the large cross at our entrance and a new informational kiosk featuring helpful resources, quarterly clean-up dates and a map. Burial Options for Every Family Holy Cross Cemetery offers a full range of interment choices to meet a variety of needs and preferences with options available for a range of budgets and family preferences. • Traditional ground plots • Two mausoleums with single and true-companion crypts • Marble and glass niches • A tranquil Columbarium Garden for cremations • Reserved space on our perimeter for individual family mausoleums The cemetery is open daily from dawn to dusk, with interments scheduled Monday through Saturday mornings. To help visitors locate loved ones, our website includes an online burial locator, and our front-entrance kiosk provides a convenient Walk-to-Site QR code. You Are Welcome Here We invite you to visit Holy Cross Cemetery to experience its peaceful surroundings for yourself. Perhaps taxes are as old as writing itself. Today, the IRS processes over 160 million individual federal tax returns annually, and the vast majority (over 93%) are filed electronically. Why are taxes so hard to understand? In 1913, the US tax code was 400 pages; now it is estimated to be 70,000+ pages. Albert Einstein is credited with saying, “The hardest thing in the world to understand is income taxes.” Benjamin Franklin coined the famous term “In this world, nothing is certain, except death and taxes.” War and taxes have always been linked to each other. SAVOR SUMMER: SHOP, DINE & EXPLORE PAGE 16 theconnectionsnj.com CREATIVE CORNER Seeing Double-Double Knitting By Carolyn Hanson Looking for a challenge? Try using a Doodle Deck by Pacific Co to create a 2-sided, 2-color scarf. One Color Double Knitting Another use of double knitting is to create a flat pocket using straight needles. This is perfect for a small flat Afterthought Pocket as described by Elizabeth Zimmermann in Knitting Without Tears. The setup is similar for 2 colors, except that just one color is used. With this technique, one stitch is knitted and the next is slipped (passed from one needle to the next without knitting). How to Start? - Cast on an even number of stitches using a K1P1 cast on. -Knit one, slip the next stitch as if to purl and repeat; K1, slip 1 purl wise. Turn your work and repeat. Now the previously slipped stitches are knitted, and the knitted stitches are slipped. It takes 2 rows to complete a single full row of knitting. When binding off, separate the knit stitched from the slip stitches onto 2 needles, then bind off using a third needle. A pocket is the result. The effect is a flatter result from knitting in the round. Here are 2 patterns that use this technique. - Angora Baby Booties by Joelle Hoverson - Berlin Scarf by Susanne Muller The scarf is knit in the round, while the fringe is double-knit. ouble knitting is a technique that creates two knit sides of the fabric (Stockinette). There are 2 different purposes. One is to create a 2-color reversible design in stockinette flat or in rounds. The other is for 1-color while knitting in rows, instead of rounds, to create a small pocket. Two Color Double Knitting This fabric is double thick and creates reversible designs with no wrong side. It’s perfect for reversible scarves or hats. The technique requires a pair of stitches; one knitted in Color A and another purled in Color B for each stitch in the design. The knitted stitches form the front, and the purl stitches form the back, making a 2-sided design. The colors used on each side are reversible. For example, a white background with green hearts on one side and a green background with white hearts on the other. Double knitting does not have any floats, meaning extra yarn is carried on the wrong side to allow for the color changes on the front. All color changes happen between the 2 layers. How to start? - Cast on an even number of stitches using 2 colors (Color A, Color B) in an A-B-A-B pattern. - For each pair of stitches, knit with Color A and purl with Color B. To make it easier, think of double knitting as 1x1 ribbing; knit 1 in Color A, purl 1 in Color B. Both colors held in the back when knitting and both colors held in the front when purling, but only knitting or purling with the appropriate color. There is usually a chart showing which color is used for the knit stitches; the partner stitch uses the other color to purl. D CigeLaw@gmail.com

SAVOR SUMMER: SHOP, DINE & EXPLORE PAGE 20 theconnectionsnj.com ooking for an unforgettable summer of family fun? The Somerset County Park Commission has you covered with incredible parks, exciting events, and outdoor fun for all. Discover endless ways to enjoy nature, stay active, and connect with your community while enjoying a diverse range of programs and events through Labor Day. Below is a brief highlight of park facilities and programs. For a full listing, visit somersetcountyparks.org/ or follow us on Facebook and Instagram. Outdoor Physical Fun Hikers and bikers can find great paths throughout the county, from Natirar Park to Washington Valley Park to the Sourland Mountain Preserve, for participants of all abilities. If you prefer more level routes, most County parks have paved paths for safe strolls and rides. For those seeking a guided experience, the Park Commission has three monthly Nature Walks through the Great Swamp led by Environmental Education Center Naturalists. Tweens and teens looking to learn more about horses and riding can sign up at the Stable at Lord Stirling Park. There are programs to learn grooming and horse care, horseback riding, and more. Anglers of all ages can take advantage of the dozens of trout stocked fishing spots along the various branches of the Raritan River, as well as in Colonial Park’s ponds. And, of course, the County’s five award-winning golf courses are open daily all summer long. Come on out for 18 holes, take some lessons at the Neshanic Valley Learning Center, or sharpen up your game at our pitch and putt courses. If you’re up for racquet sports, visit North Branch Greenway Park’s pickleball courts or take up tennis at the Green Knoll or Colonial Park Courts. Family Fun Bring the whole family for a day-long outing at Colonial Park’s mini golf course, take a paddleboat out on the Pond, settle down for a picnic, and then watch the kids cool off at the splash park! And don’t forget the dog park for your canine companions. Warrenbrook Pool is another great place for the family during the hot summer days. Toddlers and babies can splash in the wading pool while older kids and adults enjoy the pool and water slide. The pool makes a great location for a family picnic, as do the set-aside picnic areas around the playground in Duke Island Park. The Best Community Events of the Summer The Park Commission has a full schedule of fun summer events. The season kicks off in June with the famous Rose Day Festival at Colonial Park’s Rudolf W. van der Goot Rose Garden. This is followed at North Branch Park by the best Independence Day fireworks show around, including live music and food trucks. The weekly Summer Concert Series also features food trucks and live local bands rocking tunes from throughout the ages at Duke Island Park. Rent an Event or Party Space If you’re looking for a summer party location or a great venue for a family reunion, the picnic pavilions at Colonial Park, Duke Island Park, East County Park, and North Branch Park are ready for your reservation. Each pavilion has barbecues, tables, covered spaces, convenient parking, and can be reserved in advance for your exclusive use. Make some arrangements today to set your summer park plans in place. We’ll see you there! L SOMERSET SPOTLIGHT Summer in Full Bloom: Exploring Somerset County Parks Looking for an unforgettable summer of family fun? SAVOR SUMMER: SHOP, DINE & EXPLORE PAGE 22 theconnectionsnj.com he average person has 60,000 thoughts a day. And 80% of them are negative. That’s roughly 48,000 negative thoughts per day. I wish that were a typo! I assure you, to our dismay, it isn’t. Worry. Self-doubt. Catastrophizing. Replaying conversations at 2 a.m. Assuming the worst over a delayed text. Beliefs that you’re behind, not enough, too much, not ready, not capable. Our 48,000 negative thoughts raise a larger question: how many of them have we mistaken for facts? Because maybe that is where the real problem begins. Not in having negative thoughts, but in believing every single one of them. A thought, repeated often enough, can stop feeling like a passing thought and start becoming a belief. And beliefs, especially unconscious ones, shape exactly how we see ourselves, what we expect, and how we move through the world. You have to wonder: how often are we calling something who we are when it may just be a mental habit we’ve worn for too long? Like a beloved but outdated coat hanging in the closet, some thoughts have been with us so long they feel like part of our identity, when in truth, they may simply be old patterns that no longer fit and are ready to be donated. Neuroscience tells us that repeated thoughts strengthen neural pathways. What we often think, we reinforce, and what we emotionally rehearse, we become familiar with. In some cases, even the body becomes conditioned to the chemistry of stress or fear. The first step is not fighting your thoughts but noticing them. There is something quietly revolutionary about simply becoming a witness to your own mind! Watching a thought arrive the way you might watch a stranger walk into a room, with curiosity rather than alarm. Notice when the mind says I’m behind. Notice how fear turns into a story. Notice when an old thought shows up dressed as truth. Because awareness creates distance, and distance creates choice. One of the most powerful practices is to name the thought as it appears. That’s worry. That’s self-doubt. That’s catastrophizing. That’s an old pattern looking for somewhere to land. In naming it, you stop merging with it and move from being inside the thought to simply observing it. And once you can observe it, you can let it pass. Some thoughts are like people at a party, you don’t have to invite them into a deeper conversation! And here is what I want you to hold onto: you are not failing if the old thoughts keep returning. Some of them have been with you longer than certain friendships, longer than cities you’ve lived in, longer than versions of yourself you’ve already outgrown. Of course, they don’t disappear overnight! The goal is to stop letting every thought cast a vote on who you are. New ways of thinking will feel strange before they feel like home, and then one day, almost without noticing, they simply will. That part, I promise, is not a typo either.
