My holistic approach to allocation is to develop 3 separate buckets—tax-deferred assets, including pretax retirement accounts, post-tax assets-Roth accounts, and after-tax savings. Many investors I meet with tend to have a larger portion of savings in pretax retirement accounts, as I reference “top-heavy”. This is in part from making annual pretax contributions to items including 401K plans, and rollovers to a traditional IRA. At distribution, this leads to higher taxable income and further these funds are characterized as ordinary income. Developing tax-free retirement funds can be challenging. Many taxpayers are limited in making Roth contributions. Many 401K plans provide the opportunity to make both pretax and Roth post-tax contributions. Although Roth contributions are not tax-deductible, for some, the tax-free compounding over time can be worth significantly more than the upfront tax deduction. Either way, pre- or post-tax retirement contributions should take full advantage of any company-matching contributions; it just makes good sense. Post Tax Savings, as the name suggests, is money saved after paying applicable income taxes from the source. This could include employment, investment income, trust income, and IRA distributions. Inheritance and Life Insurance proceeds are typically received tax-free by the recipient. By now, my readers know I do not want investors to pay any unnecessary income taxes. Carefully growing generational wealth requires skill and attention. Taxes have become more relevant given the rising markets we have experienced over the last few years. No one likes to see big gains on their year-end 1099 tax form. For the income investor, I believe an allocation to municipal bonds could provide an attractive taxable equivalent yield. Particularly in hightax states such as NJ and NY. Of course, investments in municipal securities may not be appropriate for all investors. Equity Income-type investments may receive a lower capital gains tax rate on the dividends generated. Taxable Equity accounts should manage realized capital gains as they reduce after-tax returns. Actively managed mutual funds are generally not tax efficient. I believe the vehicle of choice for many successful investors is the separately managed account (SMA). A type of SMA is a direct index approach, which is designed to help manage capital gains. A key benefit of the direct index account is that it can be funded with your existing securities. If active management does not meet your needs, passive investing, more commonly found in Exchange Traded Funds (ETFs), tends to be tax efficient. A professionally assembled Net worth statement is a great place to start. A detailed Net worth statement will illustrate how full or empty each of your 3 buckets might be. Our practice is skilled in advanced planning techniques and is equipped to manage the complex needs of successful individuals and closely held or family businesses. These conditions are largely made up of acute muscle strains, overuse tendon injuries, and arthritis related joint pain. These injuries are painful, limit movement and quality of life, while potentially causing lasting damage to the structural integrity of your tendons, joints, and muscles. Key symptoms of chronic tendon and joint pain: · Dull, achy pain at rest and inability to get comfortable · Pain which increases during and after activity · Taking pain medication just to make it through the day Why traditional treatments often fall short: Until recently, physical therapy and/or cortisone injections were considered the go-to conservative approach to treat tendon and joint pain. Unfortunately, this route often falls short as it does not combat tendon degeneration and focuses on pain reduction rather than stimulating healing at the source. At Performance Ortho, we take an innovative and comprehensive approach to your care. From the very first visit, you are partnered with a dedicated team of orthopedic specialists, including board-certified surgeons, physicians, and rehabilitation experts. Working together in one facility, our collaborative team delivers a personalized care plan to restore your mobility, relieve your pain, and help you return to the activities you love. Introducing Focused Shock Wave Therapy: Performance Ortho’s most recent addition for healing patients without surgery is non-invasive Focused Shock Wave Therapy. This groundbreaking technology is an FDA-Cleared treatment that delivers high-energy acoustic waves to stimulate stem cells and other natural healing factors to injured tissue. The shockwave is a physical sound wave, not an electrical one, used to deliver energy through damaged tissue, increasing blood flow in injured soft tissue, ligaments, joints, and tendons. Focused Shockwave Therapy is administered 1-2 times per week over 4-6 weeks. Many patients report immediate post-treatment reduction of pain as well as improved range of motion and return to function. Often, Focused Shockwave Therapy is combined with other innovative regenerative interventions like stem cell therapy, platelet-rich plasma (PRP), or prolotherapy to provide a more comprehensive and lasting approach to chronic conditions. Dr. Mejia explains, “One of the most rewarding aspects of Focused Shockwave Therapy is how quickly patients experience improvements in both pain and mobility. By integrating this therapy into our individualized care model, patients not only achieve faster relief but also lasting improvement in function. From chronic tendon injuries to arthritis, and plantar fasciitis to shoulder pain, Focused Shockwave Therapy is a versatile, non-surgical solution that aligns perfectly with our treatment philosophy to avoid surgery whenever possible.” Benefits of Shockwave Therapy: · Short treatment time · Precise & targeted application · Non-invasive, no adverse effects · Deep tissue treatment · No medication · Covered by Medicare Next Steps: At Performance Ortho, we specialize in non-surgical, evidence-based treatments that change lives. If you’re struggling with chronic pain, it’s time to explore Focused Shockwave Therapy at Performance Ortho Performance Ortho. If insurance coverage is a concern, Performance Ortho Performance Ortho offers no-cost insurance verification and transparent pricing. Meet Your Expert: Dr. Joseph Mejia Dr. Mejia is a triple board-certified specialist in Pain Management, Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation, and Sports Medicine. But for many in Somerset County, the idea of “home” is far from reality. Some individuals and families face financial hardship, housing instability, or a lack of support systems. For them, the holidays can be a time of isolation and uncertainty. That’s where HOME of HOME of Somerset County steps in. Founded in 1992 as the Interfaith Hospitality Network (IHN), the organization rebranded in 2021 as HOME: HOME: Housing Outreach Multifaith Empowerment. This name reflects our expanded mission: to provide shelter, support, and empowerment to those experiencing homelessness. HOME offers: • Emergency shelter, including meals and basic services • Transitional support, such as counseling, life skills, and case management • A compassionate team of staff and volunteers from local interfaith congregations Together, we help individuals and families rebuild their lives and rediscover what it means to have a place to call home. community can help, please reach out. Contact HOME at 908-704-1920 to learn more or get involved. Let’s ensure that more people in Somerset County can truly be home for the holidays — not just in spirit, but in reality. Homelessness is rising — even in affluent Somerset County. At HOME’s office at 98 West End Avenue in Somerville, staff regularly meet people who have been sleeping in cars for days, weeks, or months. The need is urgent, and the response must be immediate. In 2024, HOME provided shelter every week of the year: • 65% of those weeks were hosted by local congregations • 35% required hotel stays — a costly but necessary option as hosting capacity declines Hotel costs are increasing, and every dollar donated helps offset these expenses and supports vital services like food security, basic health care, and transportation. How YOU Can Help This holiday season, you can make a meaningful impact: • Give Funds: Your donation directly supports shelter, meals, and essential services. • Give Time: Volunteers are the heart of HOME — your time and talents are deeply valued. • Give Space: HOME urgently needs new hosting congregations. Your chicken will be just as cuddly without toppling over.] There are many variations in size and construction. The original Emotional Support Chicken pattern (2023) was knitted. A crochet version was added in 2024. There are now variations with wings and legs, smaller versions, even chick size. There are crochet chicks made from 2 granny squares. The design gives the impression of wings. Don’t forget to name your chicken and make it personal. Annette has created names such as Lindsey LoHEN, BEAK-on-say, and CHICK-Kira. An attorney friend gifted one to a new judge and called her Ruth Bader GinsBIRD. There is just something about an Emotional Support Chicken that makes it comforting to young and old. It’s a gift you didn’t know you needed. Find the patterns on Ravelry at: www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/emotional-support-chicken. Kits are also available from: www.theknittingtreela.com Granny Square Chick: www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/granny-square-chicken e all need a little support now and then. Could an Emotional Support Chicken be the solution? I’m not speaking of a live chicken, but the DIY kind (do it yourself). This one does not require legal considerations such as Fair Housing, City Ordinances, Travel Restrictions, or Documentation. This kind travels well and is even accepted by TSA and fellow passengers. Believe it or not, this is a thing. The trend to knit or crochet a chicken has been going strong since 2024. Annette Corsino of The Knitting Tree, L.A., designed the pattern based on an earlier version by the late Beverly Galaskas, called Henrietta and Family. Annette designed the pattern during COVID when we were all locked down and searching for a cozy home craft. The pattern became so popular that the shop conducted KnitAlongs (a group activity where many knitters each work on the same pattern at the same time) and has since sold over 30,000 copies worldwide with availability in 5 languages - English, Danish, German, Portuguese, and Spanish. The step-by-step instructions are easy to follow, including many progressive photos and a video tutorial. Choose a main color and a contrasting color for the breast and tail stripes, then a bit of red and yellow for the comb, wattle, and beak, respectively. The chicken is knit flat in several sections: tail, body including neck and head, beak, wattle, comb, and base. The shaping uses short rows. A short row is a row that is not fully knitted; the work is turned before reaching the end of the row and then goes back to the beginning of the row. This creates a rounded shape. All is explained in the video tutorial. Stitch all together, add safety eyes or buttons, and Polyfil stuffing. Finish with a hug. [Note: Add a bit of weight for balance and stability. Fill a 4” x 4” pouch with beans W

Somerset Street, Raritan 908-210-9588 iving in a part of the country where many people are retired, it is natural to look at me and assume I am one of them. Although I have my hair dyed to a shade closest to my natural color, wear clothes that are considered “hip”, workout every day to maintain stamina and muscle tone, I am an older woman. Equally to the point, I no longer always receive a paycheck for the effort I put forth in my endeavors. And yes, that could be the end of the discussion. However, despite my lofty age, I choose to think of myself as vital, engaged and having much more to contribute to society than ever before in my life. Perhaps that emanates from the reality I almost died several times in my forties, lost over twenty years of my life suffering from bowel issues which were, thankfully, resolved by my ileostomy. Making up for lost time may be a piece of what drives me, but continuing to be relevant is the over arching thought in my mind, each and every day. The places I now put my energies are varied and extremely satisfying! They are curated from opportunities available to those of us of a certain age. Please understand that I am not unique. These opportunities are omnipresent. This summer, I facilitated a fourweek, ninety-minute class at Osher Lifelong Learning on the campus of Florida Atlantic University on “Being a Woman in 2025”. I will facilitate it again in March, changing the year to 2026. It will bring different challenges to the table, I assume, including understanding and adapting to artificial intelligence. The beauty of the experience was becoming intimately involved with amazing women who had much to share and were comfortable doing it in the safe space we created. Additionally, every Thursday morning, I travel to the high school of the incredible young lady I mentor through a program entitled Take Stock in Children. We meet during her lunch time and discuss her goals, thoughts, and dreams. The program provides all she needs to be successful in her high school career, positioning her to obtain a two-year scholarship, (which has the potential to be a free ride all four years) to a college in Florida. She has the opportunity to become the woman she desires, and I am so proud of her! Society needs young people determined to reach and exceed their potential. I am equally proud of the friends I have recruited to join me as mentors. We share the amazing feeling of doing for another what will help them do for others. There are many more commitments I have made to fulfill myself at this stage of life. Perhaps you, too, have a calling to spread your wings. If so, I encourage and support you…there is no time like NOW! SLICEOFLIFE You Must Be Retired! By Ellyn Mantell L
