Please read to learn how this organization is changing lives one student at a time. Our Jewish Life page encourages followers of the faith to congregate in our communities to celebrate the upcoming Jewish Holidays. You may want to visit these places of prayer, education and charitable work. On the cover – Gracing the cover of this issue is a watercolor piece by Linda Howe. The artwork is entitled, Peace Pond. Linda says, “As a child, I went to a small pond to see what was coming alive there. I‘d scour the perimeters and try to catch frogs. Now, decades later, I realize it's probably watching those frogs that taught me how to sit very still, so I can paint, and listen more deeply, and only move when I need to. When I look upon this scene, today, it reminds me to choose peace, that’s it, plain and simple, or 'plein air' and simple. Painting and drawing can be like Windex for my mind and places and experiences like this do teach me how to live and flow with change.” Please read her impressive bio on page 8. ON THE COVER There are endless benefits to crate training and having your dog have access to a space where they can go to decompress and relax; just like your own bedroom! You can go to your room, close the door, jump into your bed, and take a nice nap after a long morning of taking care of the kids and gardening! It’s the same for our dogs. They need space to breathe and have some quiet time just like us. Other than a place for relaxation, the crate is a great tool to use for new puppies, even older dogs alike. Having them in a secure place when they are not supervised could potentially save your dog’s life. It gives you peace of mind knowing they can’t get into trouble. If you are not able to supervise them, you still might find yourself stressing about what they are doing. The crate eliminates stress on both ends! The crate is wonderful for young puppies especially because they need plenty of sleep to grow their noggins! If puppies are lacking quality sleep without disruption, they begin to act in ways pet parents deem unfavorable. And of course, the crate helps with potty training! The crate can even be beneficial outside the home. If the dog finds his crate safe and comfy (remember, dogs are den animals!), it can assist the dog in transitioning locations; such as traveling in the car (even a plane), going to the groomers, going to daycare, or even going in for an emergency vet visit. Imagine already being stressed and not knowing where you are going, at least you know you are safe in your crate! Not only feeling safe mentally, but physical safety should also be a concern for pet parents. Crates in cars keep your dog from interfering with the driver and keep them contained in case of an accident. Plus, there is a hefty fine if you are pulled over and the police officer sees that your dog could potentially hinder the driver’s performance. Overall, crates keep our dogs out of trouble regardless of age and they keep our stress low knowing our pups are safe. It is important to start your crate training as soon as your new dog becomes a member of your family because everything is so new to them – they are going to want a place to rest and process all of the new information they’re receiving. Positive associates with the crate are built over time and should be continuously rewarded especially in the first steps, regardless of age. Sleeping in the crate at night helps but the crate should also be practiced during the day, even if you are home! Small segments of time that can be increased as you progress, work for any crate situation: just a home crate in your living room, or the crate in the car. Slow and steady wins the race. Having something to do in the crate also assists in the positive association concept: a stuffed kong, a bully stick, and a lick mat are all good examples of something your dog can engage with safely in the crate. Crate games that build enthusiasm to enter the crate are also beneficial. Most of the time, we find that people have negative feelings about crate training their dog and we try our best to educate them as to how it could be a life saver – literally! If you are interested in getting your dog started with crate training or need help with building positive associations with the crate, we are here to help! At My Dog’s Got Class, we love to teach pet parents about the benefits of crate training Crate Training There are endless benefits to crate training and having your dog have access to a space where they can go to decompress and relax; just like your own bedroom! 1. FRE EMAN, VMD, MS Several generations ago it was common to feed pets leftovers from the family dinner table as their sole diet. However, as our understanding of veterinary nutrition evolved, commercial pet foods were designed to provide a more complete, balanced, and consistent diet for our pets. It also became apparent that dogs, cats and humans all have very different nutritional needs. Dilated cardiomyopathy (DCM), a serious type of heart disease that leads to heart failure and death, was one of the first medical conditions caused by nutritional deficiency to be identified in dogs and cats. Taurine deficiency in pet food was discovered to be the cause as it was discovered that dogs and cats need significantly more taurine in their diets than humans. Recognition of this and other variations in species’ micronutrient requirements led to the development of the Association of American Feed Control Officials (AAFCO), who along with the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), ensure that commercial pet foods meet the minimum nutritional requirements for each species. For years following, diet-associated DCM cases were seen only in pets fed home-cooked or other non-mainstream commercial diets. Inmore recent years, consumers have a preference for pet foods that look more appetizing to people, as well as more natural and organic to avoid antibiotics and pesticide residues. They also prefer grain-free foods to avoid gluten intake for the treatment of allergies and as a means to avoid corn - a food that is known to be genetically modified. These consumer preferences have resulted in major changes to the pet food industry and huge growth in the sale of raw diets, smaller boutique brand pet foods, and grain-free diets. But cats and dogs are not small people and dietary tolerances differ. For instance, chocolate and grapes are toxic to dogs, but not to humans. And while food allergies are not uncommon in dogs and cats, the most common food allergens for them are not grains, but are actually the most common protein sources used in pet food – chicken and beef. In July 2018, the FDA published its first warning about diet-associated DCM in dogs after veterinarians were reporting a higher incidence of the disease in dogs fed boutique and grain-free diets. In June 2019, the FDA updated its warning and provided data about the number of reports, breeds affected, and the pet food brands most involved (this information is available online). This data reported that 90% of the diets fed to affected dogs were advertised as “grain-free” and 93% used peas and/ or lentils as the grain substitute. Research is still ongoing to better understand the mechanism behind the changes to the heart muscle that occurs with these diets, but it does not seem to be due to taurine deficiency. The good news is that these changes are reversible, particularly if the diet is changed before serious heart muscle remodeling and heart failure have occurred. Thus, the general consensus amongst most veterinarians is that diets containing peas, lentils, or other legumes as the major carbohydrate sources should be avoided. Concurrently, there are also many pet owners who prefer to home-cook meals for their pets. However, even for veterinary nutritionists, it can be difficult to properly balance homecooked diets to ensure all of the necessary vitamins, minerals, and micronutrients are included. Chicken and rice-based diets, although commonly recommended as easily digestible diets for short-term feeding in pets with stomach upset, are notoriously nutritionally deficient, especially in iron and calcium. Feeding a primarily AAFCO-approved commercial diet with a smaller portion of home-cooked ingredients and a pet multi-vitamin may be the compromise for pet owners who still wish to home cook for their pets. Veterinarians recognize that each pet has different dietary needs based on their age, activity level, and the presence of any concurrent medical conditions. As such, pet owners should consult with their veterinarian when deciding upon what diet is best for their pet. At KIND Veterinary Care Center, we are committed to providing exceptional and compassionate lifelong care for our patients. As a full-service veterinary hospital, we offer comprehensive and convenient medical, dental, and surgical services with a personal touch. Food For Thought: Choosing a Healthy Diet for Your Pet Dilated cardiomyopathy (DCM), a serious type of heart disease that leads to heart failure and death, was one of the first medical conditions caused by nutritional deficiency to be identified in dogs and cats. Taurine deficiency in pet food was discovered to be the cause as it was discovered that dogs and cats need significantly more taurine in their diets than humans. PETS’ HEALTH By Andrea S. My mother wanted to give me the opportunity of a safe, quality education, but she knew that would not be possible in the Paterson Public Schools. If it had not been for Tri-County’s Scholarships, I would never have been able to receive the education and self confidence I developed at St. Gerard School and DePaul Catholic High School. I am currently on full scholarship at DeSales University where I have earned a 4.0 GPA, and plan to become a lawyer. I am grateful to Tri-County for helping me to become the person I am today.” —Jesus Delgado, Junior, DeSales University, past Tri-County Scholarship recipient Forty-one years ago, Tri-County Scholarship Fund (TCSF) was founded to improve the lives of New Jersey’s most financially vulnerable children by providing them access to the superior and safer option of values-based K-12th grade independent schools. “We believe that every child deserves access to a safe, quality education regardless of their family’s zip code or income level, “ says TCSF President, Prudence Pigott. “In many poverty stricken zip codes, the public schools are trying, but not able to deliver an environment that encourages success. There is little in the way of a positive peer group, of character development, or educational excellence. Our parents seek a better option for their children, and Tri-County makes this dream a reality by awarding partial scholarships to better, safer schools.” The majority of scholarship students come from inner-city, single parent homes with an average household income of $30,000. 85% of scholarship students are racial and ethnic minorities. With a 41year proven track record, Tri-County points to a winning formula of shared commitment: TCSF provides partial scholarships, the partner schools offer discounted tuition, and parents sacrifice to pay their share. All are invested in the students’ success. As a result, the students feel believed in and make the most out of the educational opportunity. “By awarding scholarships and educational opportunity, Tri-County breaks the cycle of generational poverty,” says Pigott. “Providing access to a quality education makes all the difference. 100% of our scholarship students graduate from high school. For centuries this region quietly produced wines from the Gamay grape, consumed locally and in bistros and restaurants from the Mediterranean to Paris. In villages of the region, the completion of the harvest was celebrated with the barely fermented new wines or “nouveau” Beaujolais. In the 1970s, this celebration caught on outside the region, first in Paris, then around the world. By law the wines could not legally be released until the 3rd Thursday of November, so racing to become the first to sell them became all the rage. In the beginning, this was a huge boon to the growers. “Nouveau Beaujolais” short fermentation period allowed producers to clear their inventory and get paid in months rather than years. Nicknamed “Chateau cash flow”, this caused production to soar, but quality suffered. When the bubble burst and the infatuation died off, it left a bad taste in the mouths of many consumers. But therewere a handful of growers who never signed onto the Nouveau craze. They believed that traditional winemaking, quality over quantity, was essential and moved “back to nature” with organic, biodynamic, and natural grape growing and winemaking. Today many more are following the trend. The top wines from these growers are highly sought after by connoisseurs and top Sommeliers and are now found on the lists of some of the best restaurants in the world. There are several levels of Beaujolais production, mainly driven by the unique soils and terroir. Beaujolais AOC is a lighter, fruitier wine mainly from vineyards in the south. Moving north is the Beaujolais-Villages AOC, with steeper hills, higher altitude, and soils composed of sandstone, schists, granite, and some limestone. The wines are a step up in terms of the body while maintaining a fresh, fruit-driven nature. The best sites are the hillside vineyards surrounding the ten “Cru Villages”, with more structure and complexity than simple Beaujolais – sometimes more reminiscent of their Pinot Noir based cousins to the north. The best can age for a decade or more, yet most are medium-bodied, accessible when they are young, and work with food much like Pinot Noir, pairing with poultry, game birds, grilled meaty fish, and lighter meats like pork or veal, burgers, steaks and chops. Lighter Beaujolais and Beaujolais Villages are also great summer reds, served with a slight chill. Prices range from $10 - $15 for simple Beaujolais, and from the high-teens to the mid $30s for the top producers and Crus, making them quite a bargain. With a series of excellent vintages on the market, it is an excellent time to explore a region on the move. Cheers! Less than an hour’s drive away, Lambertville and New Hope offer a wide variety of activities for families of varying ages and interests. Late summer and early fall are ideal times to explore the natural beauty and diverse cultural opportunities offered in these quaint little towns. Lambertville is known as the “antique capital of New Jersey” and there are plenty of antique stores to satisfy everyone from the bargain browser to the avid collector. There are also many eclectic specialty stores that beckon visitors inside. One such place is the Magic Glass Studio, located at 63 Coryell Street. This is a hands-on experience where customers can create a oneof-a-kind glass piece at this unique studio. For the outdoor enthusiasts, bring your bicycles and ride the scenic rail trail or bike to nearby Frenchtown. Hikers will enjoy Bowman’s Hill Wildflower Preserve, located two miles south of New Hope on Route 32. Wildflowers and native plants and trees surround walking trails through 100 acres of woods and meadows. Tubing and rafting rides on the Delaware can be found at Delaware River Tubing in Frenchtown or Bucks County River Country, located eight miles north of town on Route 32, which also provides canoeing and kayaking trips. Those with small children or older grandparents might consider a ride on the New Hope & Ivyland Railroad which boards at 32 West Bridge Street in New Hope. The restored 1920s steam engine passenger train takes you through historic Bucks County, evoking the Golden Era of steam railroading. Passengers may get off at Lahaska Station and return to New Hope. Previously known as Coryell’s Ferry, New Hope offers 200 years of History. Museums, cobblestone roads, quaint cafés and an overall fervor are just some of the hallmarks of New Hope. Shoppers will not want to miss the Golden Nugget Outdoor Flea Market located a few miles south of Lambertville. The Golden Nugget is open from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., Wednesdays, Saturdays, and Sundays. The emphasis is on antiques, but there are plenty of dealers selling collectibles, art, pottery, jewelry, and clothing. All of this activity will surely make a person hungry! There are many wonderful restaurants, some with Delaware River views, along the tree-lined streets. For breakfast and lunch, try Full Moon Café, Giuseppe’s for good, homemade pizza, and Hamilton’s Grill Room for an excellent seafood dinner.
