Four years later, Heartworks formally became a 501(c) (3) non-profit organization and has since been able to show love and support to well over 1,400 individuals and families. Their mission: To maintain the palpable kindness and connection that our country experienced following the tragic terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001. In the words of founder, Megan McDowell, “We all experience loss and struggle in this lifetime, most people who donate to Heartworks do so because they know the power of receiving during these times and want others to be able to have an expense or helpful service covered.” The Heartworks House on Morristown Ave. in Basking Ridge, where 5 meetings a year are held, all open to the public, is where women gather to pray for and support families living through their first year of grief or illness. Heartworks offers financial support in the form of checks, meals, cleaning services, lawn maintenance, or any specifics that could possibly make that year easier in any way. It offers ways for people to reach out to those they know who are living with grief and illness. Heartworks also hosts Local Veterans Post 7858 for their monthly meetings. “Heartworkers” serve the men catered food, ensuring them that their sacrifices have not been forgotten. This monthly gesture is a way to keep in the forefront of the foundation’s mind that it is not everywhere in the world that women can gather freely together, without the fear of persecution, and to honor those who fought for this freedom. Heartworks simply could not continue to have an impact on our community without the support from donors. Donations (big and small) are all equally important and always appreciated. The annual fundraising event, “An Evening at the Cider Mill”, will be held at the Burnt Mills Cider Mill in Bedminster, NJ, on Friday, September 15, 2023, from 5:00 pm to 9:00 pm. This is an incredibly fun, informal evening with music and hard cider, celebrating a powerful mission. Tickets are just $50 to ensure that anybody who wants to attend can afford to attend. Tickets and Sponsorship Opportunities can be reserved on the Heartworks website at www.njheartworks.org. One aspect of dental care that often requires attention at a young age is orthodontics. Many parents will often be made aware their child’s orthodontic issues at a routine dental checkup or noticing some alignment issues as adult teeth start to grow in. They may also see some of their child’s classmates with braces. So when should a child see an orthodontist? Orthodontics is a specialized field that focuses on diagnosing and correcting dental and facial irregularities. While most people associate orthodontic treatment with teenagers and adults, it is crucial to be familiar with the value of early evaluation. The American Association of Orthodontists recommends that children have their first orthodontic evaluation by the age of seven. This allows orthodontists to identify any potential issues and plan appropriate intervention, if necessary. During the initial evaluation, an orthodontist assesses various factors that may contribute to orthodontic issues, such as crowding, misalignment, or improper bite. By examining the child’s teeth, jaws, and facial structure, an orthodontist can determine if there are any indications of future problems. Early detection of issues provides an opportunity for timely intervention, preventing the progression of dental irregularities and the need for more extensive treatments in the future. Early orthodontic intervention, often referred to as interceptive orthodontics, aims to address potential problems in their early stages. By taking a proactive approach, orthodontists can guide the growth and development of the teeth and jaws, correcting alignment issues and optimizing facial aesthetics. Some benefits of early orthodontic treatment include: 1. Reducing the need for tooth extraction: By intervening at a younger age, orthodontists can create sufficient space for permanent teeth, minimizing the likelihood of extraction later on. 2. Correcting bite problems: Interceptive orthodontics can address issues like overbite, under bite, cross bite, or open bite, ensuring proper alignment of the upper and lower jaws. 3. Enhancing facial symmetry: Early intervention can help guide the growth of the jaw bones, improving the overall facial appearance and symmetry. 4. Preventing speech difficulties: Correcting dental irregularities early on can prevent speech problems caused by improper tooth alignment. 5. Boosting self-esteem: By addressing orthodontic concerns early, children often have improved self-confidence and social interactions. While the optimal age for orthodontic treatment varies depending on the individual, early intervention, when necessary, can often yield the best results. The teenage years are commonly associated with orthodontic treatment, as permanent teeth have erupted by that time. However, in certain cases, by initiating treatment during childhood, orthodontists can guide the growth of the teeth and jaws more effectively. It is important to note that not every child will require treatment. In some cases, the orthodontist may recommend periodic check-ups to monitor development and determine the right time to commence treatment. Orthodontic treatment duration can vary from several months to a few years, depending on the complexity of the case. As parents, understanding when it’s time for your child to see an orthodontist is crucial for their dental health and overall well-being. Early orthodontic evaluation allows for timely intervention, minimizing the severity of potential problems and optimizing treatment outcomes. HEARING HAPPENS IN THE BRAIN CONNECTIONS HAPPEN IN THE HEART Our technology works with your technology — your brain — to focus your hearing. Call today to learn how you can stay connected with life! 908.388.1064 Q: When someone speaks, I often miss nuances, like tone. Could this be hearing loss? A: That’s an interesting question! Hearing loss shares symptoms with other conditions, though. Let’s look at what hearing loss is and consider another possible culprit. Hearing Basics Hearing is complex. It’s more than just your ears taking in sound. Your nerves and brain actively partner with your ear in a delicate dance to accomplish hearing. Here’s how it happens. Area 1: The Ear-Your outer ear collects sound waves, which travel down your ear canal and cause your eardrum to vibrate. The vibrations are passed to your middle ear, where three tiny bones amplify the vibrations and send them to your inner ear. In your inner ear, the vibrations become waves in a fluid-filled cavity. The waves jostle tiny hair-like cells, which convert the wave information into electric impulses. Area 2: The Auditory Nerve-Your auditory (hearing) nerve carries all those electrical impulses as nerve signals to the part of your brain that processes what you hear. Area 3: The Brain-Your brain pinpoints where the sound is coming from, focuses on it, separates out background noise, determines whether it recognizes the sound, and identifies whether it’s speech, music, or something else. Hearing Loss Hearing loss is anything that does go wrong in that first area-your ears-such as earwax buildup, an ear infection, or damage to any of the tiny structures. A standard hearing test from a hearing care professional will determine whether you have hearing loss. Common symptoms are: • Trouble understanding people on the telephone • Difficulty following conversations with two or more people • Asking people to repeat themselves • Turning up the TV so loud that others complain • Problems understanding speech in background noise • Thinking others mumble • Trouble understanding children and people with higher-pitched voices But the symptom you mentioned-missing nuances like the tone of people’s speech-is more often a symptom of something else. Auditory Processing Disorder Auditory processing disorder (APD) has a lot in common with hearing loss-but many (not all) people with APD pass a hearing evaluation with flying colors! What’s going on here? This is where that third area you use for hearing, the brain, comes in. With APD, something interferes with the way your ears and brain coordinate. You might hear sounds loud and clear-your ears are doing their job-but something keeps your brain from processing the sounds effectively. How common it is? It’s hard to even pin down an estimate, because providers use different diagnostic standards. We don’t understand the causes of APD very well, either, but it tends to be linked with ADHD and dyslexia. Symptoms of APD Certain symptoms point more strongly to APD than to hearing loss, for example: • Difficulty remembering directions spoken aloud • Mishearing words or sentences • Sensory overload in noisy environments • Problems picking up nuances in speech • Inability to appreciate music It’s not about intelligence-someone might remember written directions very well but misremember spoken ones them. It’s about how the sounds are received and processed. If you’re an adult with APD, you may well have had it your entire life, but it went under the radar. Many adults with APD don’t even realize they’ve developed coping strategies. An audiologist diagnoses APD in adults through a series of listening tasks, then develops a treatment plan that could include: • Speech-language therapy, especially auditory training • Brain-training techniques to improve processing skills • Computer-assisted-programs • Counseling or art/music therapy There’s No Easy Answer As you can see, a lot must happen for you to successfully hear and understand a sound. Your symptom-missing nuances in speech-is just one symptom to consider. Detox your body • Restore your health ADVANCED FREQUENCY Energy Spa Our Frequency Modalities remove the roadblocks (free radicals and toxins) which are keeping our cells from functioning optimally. This allows oxygen to saturate our cells and helps our cells to max out energy output. This restores order and optimal health. Re Charge Your Life! Would You Like To Be a Super Human? There are alternatives that can improve and restore optimum health that are non-medical and holistic. Advanced Frequency Energy Spa, in Whitehouse Station, is a new cutting-edge center bringing health and wellness to our area. Upon opening in June, owners Michael and Trish Mahoney wanted to help their customers restore their energy, improve their health, and recharge their life. If someone is looking for more “spring in their step “or for a chance of joy once again, they have come to the right place. A sanctuary offering state-of-the-art technologies, popular on the west coast, is now available in NJ. The minute you walk in, you can feel the energy and peace. Upon entering the “Quiet Room” you step into a scalar field generated by a 24-unit Energy Enhancement System™ (EE System™). The EE System™ generates multiple bio-active life-enhancing energy fields, including “scalar waves” which can allow cell regeneration, improve immune function, reduce inflammation, provide relief from pain, detoxify the body, elevate mood, and assist in balancing the right and left hemispheres of the brain to increase energy levels. This stunning technology, developed by Dr. Sandra Rose Michael, Ph.D., DNM, DCSJI, uses specialized equipment to generate energy fields that can promote healing by energizing the mitochondria. “It’s all about the mitochondria in our cells,” explains Trish. “The mitochondria are the power plants of our cells, creating that electric spark that energizes the cells in our bodies.” Mitochondria make our energy from food, oxygen, and water. As we age, the mitochondria make less energy and are blocked by free radicals and toxins. This is aging. Scalar frequency energizes the mitochondria, restoring that youthful vigor, energy, and health. “An 84-year-old client, Mary, initially came in requiring a cane,” says Trish. After spending time in the energy spa, she proudly hung it on the reception desk and demonstrated how she could walk comfortably without it. She proudly exclaimed, “I no longer need it!” as Mary has improved the quality of her life. “What a beautiful thing! This is our mission. Who wouldn’t want more energy and independence?” How does this work? By being exposed to scalar waves. Clients enter the “Quiet Room” and sink into one of 24 comfortable lounge chairs, listen to calming frequency music, and relax. Nap or glance at one of three high-definition 86” screens displaying nature scenes of far away vistas, or be still, quieting the mind, recharging for your day. Energized mitochondria can do all sorts of great things for the body. Exposure to the EE System™ can significantly increase your energy, mental clarity, enhanced health, and overall well-being. Studies have shown that scalar frequency increases the length of telomeres, which are attached to chromosomes. Short telomeres are associated with inflammation, disease, and shorter lifespans. Longer telomeres are associated with good health and longer life spans. Scalar frequency increases their length and improves your life! The EE System™ has been recognized by dozens of medical, scientific, and professional conferences around the world. Packages are available. Be sure to inquire about special pricing for Vets, First Responders, and Seniors. Closed Sundays and Mondays, Advanced Frequency Energy Spa is open Tuesday-Friday, 10am-6pm, and Saturdays, 8am-3pm. 431 Route 22 East Whitehouse Station, NJ 08889 (888) 460-4050 advancedfrequencyenergyspa.com COMMENDS CONNECTION By Katrina Musto

Think about a few of these intriguing correlations between physics and psychology. First is Isaac Newton’s first law-identified as the law of inertia. It states that an object will remain at rest or in uniform motion in a straight line unless compelled to change its state by the action of an external force. Many couples and parents try to initiate changes in their partners or children, respectively. This often ends up in frustration because they fail to create change in others. The object, in this case, your spouse or child, will maintain the same behavioral trajectory unless there is an external force causing them to want to change. People will change their behavior given an incentive or meaningful reward to do so. People will also change their behavior if they experience meaningful distress or to avoid distress. The force you need to utilize is to set up consequences, either positive or negative, instead of using just words to try to convince them to change. A second physics concept is that an object in motion tends to stay in motion. In your life, if you are consistently taking productive steps toward happiness, success, and self-fulfillment, it is likely that you will continue to experience positive outcomes. Contrarily, if you are consistently using poor judgment, treating others poorly, cutting corners, and acting irresponsibly, your trajectory will continue to take a negative path. So, to stay on a positive path, be consistent with positive steps. To alter a consistently negative path, make appropriate changes. Third is when two objects interact, they apply forces to each other of equal magnitude and opposite direction. If you are at odds in any of your relationships, having the same conflicts repeatedly, you are probably two forces that have equal oppositional postures. You need to recognize this history of oppositional or passive resistant behavior in each other and find a “force” or means of communication to attract one another instead of opposing. A fourth physics concept is that two objects cannot occupy the same space at the same time. Well, two thoughts cannot occupy the same brain at the same time. So if you experience obsessive thoughts, repeatedly negative, self-denigrating thoughts, or excessive worry, you need to focus on something external-outside of your brain. The external deflection precludes and replaces the negative thoughts inside your head. Focusing externally is also a great coping mechanism for stress and overwhelming feelings. Finally, the physics principles associated with convex and concave mirrors are analogous to perceptions. The convex mirror bulges, which makes the object appear diminished in size, while the concave mirror creates an enlarged image. Neither are accurate representations of the image. As in convex and concave mirrors, people will often minimize or magnify situations in their life as a way of dealing with both small and large problems. This causes them to misjudge the reality of the situation and make problem-solving decisions based on their distorted perceptions. Our physical world certainly overlaps with our psychological world.
