In the context of tax law, a sunset is an expiration date. The Tax Cuts and Jobs Act of 2017 (TCJA) made significant changes to U.S. tax law which are set to expire or sunset after the 2025 tax year. This type of finite tax change results in a political solution to what is an economic problem. By using a sunset provision, the projected reduction in tax revenues is only modeled by the Congressional Budget Office (CBO) until the sunset date. The CBO projects the 2024 Federal deficit to be about $2 trillion or 7% of gross domestic product (GDP). It is much easier to borrow than to repay. These temporary tax law changes make proactive planning rewarding for individuals, families, and businesses. The TJCA reduced taxes and expanded estate and gift tax exclusions. It also established the qualified business income (QBI) deduction and expanded bonus depreciation. On the flip side, it eliminated the state and local taxes (SALT) deduction (ouch in NJ and NY.) Shapiro CPAs specialize in closely held and family businesses which are organized as a pass-thru entity for income taxes. This includes S-elected corporations, limited liability corporations, and partnerships. These entities incur one level of taxation at the shareholder/partner level. The QBI deduction was enacted to bring the owners of pass-through entities into closer parity with reduced corporate tax rates. This permits up to a 20% deduction of QBI subject to limitations. Extension of this deduction, which can be sizeable for shareholders, is advisable to permit smaller businesses to compete. Pass-thru businesses may also take advantage of NJ and NY workaround provisions to permit the deduction of state income taxes. The sunset of reduced tax rates and the QBI deduction may lead to increased levels of small business sales. The 2024 estate and gift tax exemption of $13.61M per person provides relief and opportunity to many. This window, however, may close at the end of next year and the exemption may revert to prior levels of $5M indexed for inflation. If you wish to provide a greater legacy for your family or have philanthropic motivations, the $18,000 annual gift tax exclusion and the gift of appreciated securities to charity have made this easier to implement. Parents and grandparents may find accelerated 529 gifts appealing, utilizing the 5-year election allowing up to $90,000 in 2024. One potential strategy for larger estates is a spousal lifetime access trust (SLAT). Using a SLAT, married couples can harness the benefits of the current gift tax exclusion while also receiving income distributions. Navigating the tax laws and creating a strategy to benefit from a wide range of potential tax environments takes considerable time, coordination and decision-making. Even better, check out a festival celebrating the harvest-Applefest Applefest! One of the largest and most popular in the region happens every year just over the New York border in Warwick, New York. This year’s Applefest Applefest will take place on Sunday, October 6th from 9am-5pm. What began back in 1989 as a local fall festival has grown to be an attraction that draws over 30,000 visitors from all around the area. The Hudson Valley is well known for its extraordinary variety of apples. This festival showcases fall’s best fruit. Admission is free to Applefest Applefest and there is something there for the whole family. Try an Apple Pie Baking Contest (with slices for sale- so judge for yourself!), visit over 200 craft vendors, dozens of food vendors, 50 local non-profit exhibitors, a farmer’s market, a children’s carnival and live music and entertainment on several stages all throughout the day. Applefest takes place in the streets and parks of downtown Warwick so you can easily walk to village shops, restaurants, and businesses. The event is hosted by Warwick Valley Chamber of Commerce and all proceeds benefit the Chamber and about 50 local non-profit organizations. Place a special stitch marker into your project and every time you reach that marker, flex your ankles, toes, neck, or legs. Spread your knitting activities throughout the day rather than 3 hours straight. (Ahem!) Stretch your hands in the opposite direction of your knitting position. 5. Raise the Pattern. Clip patterns to a binder cover and stand it vertically to avoid looking down. 6. Switch to Circular Needles. Straight needles put more strain on wrists as the project grows. Circular needles use a cable with short needles on each end placing most of the weight onto the cable reducing strain. 7. Pair Needle Type with Yarn. Slippery metal needles pair well with yarn that clings like wool or fuzzy yarn. Slippery yarns pair well with needles that grab like bamboo. Test your needle/yarn combo by sliding the live stitches back and forth across the needle. Gliding easily means less friction and less strain. 8. Pair Needle Tips with Yarn. Pointy needles are best for dense gauge projects with small stitches. Blunt needles are best for loosely plied yarn reducing yarn splitting. 9. Diversify Projects. Work on different projects with different gauges during your knitting week (e.g., alternate between cotton and wool projects.) 10. Add Movement. Stand and walk after 20 minutes. Try marching in place while knitting and chatting. Trifecta-steps, knitting, and socializing! Stay healthy and happy knitting! I never thought that knitting/crochet could be hazardous to my health. How could relaxing and knitting while watching Netflix cause such havoc to hands, arms, neck, and back, resulting in surgeries, deformities, and physical therapy (PT)? Cumulative repetitive movement is how. Unfortunately, knitting is not the only cause. Add typing, looking down at phone screens, sitting, and improper posture. The hours add up. In addition to speaking with my PT, I came across Carson Demers’ Knitting Comfortably - The Ergonomics of Hand Knitting. Carson is a PT and a knitter. His book provides insight into our body’s vulnerabilities and stresses caused by repetitive habits including the impact of poor posture, the ergonomics of our tools, and ultimately improvement through self-care. Cumulative Repetitive Movement or Cumulative Trauma Disorder is a repetitive strain injury over months or years (ahem!) of overuse. We think of knitting as a harmless activity. After all, we’re just sitting/lounging/slouching, legs crossed, head down, knitting in one position …for hours… without a break. Ouch! Here are a few of Carson’s suggestions for self-care: 1. Posture Matters. Sit up straight. Shoulders down and back. Chin back. Feet flat on the floor when sitting. Place a pillow behind your back if sitting in a deep seat. Put a book under your feet to reach the floor. 2. Raise your Arms. Using a pillow on your lap to raise your arms brings your knitting into view while reducing neck strain. Knitting without looking down is ideal. 3. Yarn Choices. Wool fibers have a natural spring called crimping which causes less tension to make a stitch, unlike cotton, or
