THE WARREN-WATCHUNG CONNECTION PAGE 8 APRIL/MAY 2022 theconnectionsnj.com A sophomore at Watchung Hills Regional High School and an artist, Lillian Palmer stepped out of her usual comfort zone and chose “Foundations of Painting” as an elective this year. Even though high school has been quite challenging for her with both the pandemic and stress in general, by making art, she has found an outlet for her stress. She loves to make up characters or just draw anything that comes to her imagination. She usually creates digital art, alcohol marker pieces, or just enjoys sketching in her sketchbooks or on whatever is available when she has a vision. Although painting was different from her usual forms of media, she took a liking to the class and was able to improve on many skills that she struggled with in the past. Lillian has been drawing and creating art pieces since she could pick up a pencil, and has been very thankful to have programs that have led her to where she is now. In middle school, she won the superlative award for the “most artistic”, and has still continued to create and make art even throughout the troubles of the pandemic. With the help of her friends, family, and art teachers, Lillian has gained more confidence in her artwork over time, and wishes to make the people around her happy by creating artwork for them. She someday hopes to be able to pursue her art career even further, and attend college to follow this passion and dream. Be sure to read the inspiration behind the artwork in the Publisher’s Message on page 6. THE WARREN-WATCHUNG CONNECTION PAGE 12 APRIL/MAY 2022 theconnectionsnj.com Living with an animal is special. You form a special bond with them, but also get to know their unique behaviors, routines, and even their quirks. When owners express concern that their pets are not acting themselves, this is always something that I take seriously. Unfortunately, it can take an advanced disease or an awful lot of discomfort for a happy-go-lucky dog to stop eating his favorite treat, playing with a favorite toy, or wagging his tail. And cats can be even more stoic. By the time owners notice abnormalities, some pets can be in the advanced stages of a disease. It’s always devastating when pets become ill, but it’s even more heart-breaking knowing that if we had just detected the disease sooner we might have been able to treat it more effectively. This is why veterinary exams should not be reserved only for sick pets. A veterinary physical exam is truly nose-to-tail. It begins with my own observations of my patient – their body language, how they move and also utilize my senses to smell, feel, and listen to them. Patients who have abdominal pain or back pain stand and move in characteristic ways to prevent themselves from exacerbating their pain. A patient’s breath may exude an odor to alert me of an infection in the mouth, but there is also a characteristic breath smell of kidney failure and another for undiagnosed or unregulated diabetics due to the production of ketones (molecules produced when insulin levels are low). Even from across the room, different breathing sounds can be heard associated with problems of the upper airway (nose, mouth, windpipe) and problems that affect the lungs. With a stethoscope, other subtleties can be heard including abnormal heart rhythms, heart murmurs which may suggest the presence of a leaky heart valve or other heart diseases, and also the rumblings of the intestinal tract which may suggest whether food is moving through properly or not. During the exam, instruments are used to look within the eyes and ears to detect other abnormalities. Palpation, the process by which veterinarians methodically feel our patients, allows us to detect lymph node enlargement, tumors in and under the skin as well as within the abdomen and rectum, but also pain, joint swelling, and abnormal movement of a joint that might suggest an injury. Ideally, the physical examination is normal and when performed routinely with bloodwork to test organ function, provides me with some comfort that all is well. When the physical examination is not normal, it may provide a diagnosis but it doesn’t allow me to determine the most appropriate tests to perform next. Thorough physical examination by a veterinarian is recommended yearly for all pets. Because pets age much more quickly than we do, twice yearly exams are recommended for those over eight years of age. Routine veterinary visits allow for collaboration with pet parents to discuss their observations and to determine the best preventative care plan for each individual pet. Early detection of disease allows us the opportunity to treat and cure, or in other cases to at least slow the progression of chronic disease, so that pets can live longer, healthier, and happier lives. And that’s what matters most. VETERINARY EXAMS: WHY THEY MATTER By Dr. Andrea S. Freeman, VMD, MS Because pets age much more quickly than we do, twice yearly exams are recommended for those over eight years of age. Palpation, the process by which veterinarians methodically feel our patients, allows us to detect lymph node enlargement, tumors in and under the skin as well as within the abdomen and rectum, but also pain, joint swelling, and abnormal movement of a joint that might suggest an injury. As a homeowner, one can come in and talk to an employee about needing a new door or replacing windows and they can help you pick out what you need and also install it. Customers typically already have their own contractor, so in that case the contractor will work with them and find out what they would like and then order it from Jaeger Lumber. Allen says the best part of his job is getting to see remarkable transformations. “Seeing jobs where contractors have used our materials in building a home or remodeling a room that was nothing before, and turn it into an amazing living space is very rewarding,” he says. “I always say, it feels good to know that Jaeger Lumber helps build New Jersey!” By Katrina Musto JAEGER LUMBER 908-686-0070 www.jaegerlumber.com Commends Connection Headquartered in Union and employing over 150 people throughout their seven locations, they work directly with contractors, homeowners, and architects to provide them with all their building material needs. Is Your Estate Plan Updated for 2022? Custom Drafted Estate Plans To Fit Your Individual Needs Gail L. Abrams Attorney at Law 908-753-4155 7 Johnston Drive, Watchung, NJ A Will is not just for the very rich. Everyone over the age of 18 needs at least a simple Will to protect his or her family and assets after he or she passes away. A Will informs the state of New Jersey and your family how you want your assets distributed when you die. Other reasons for doing a Will include naming individuals who will control the distribution and manage those assets for your family after you are no longer here. It is especially important for younger couples that have minor children to name a guardian who will take care of your minor children if you should die. In addition, if you have minor children, you could create an Education Trust for your minor children so they will be provided for if you should pass away unexpectedly. If you die without a Will or die “Intestate”, the State of New Jersey will step in and appoint an administrator to oversee the distribution of your assets and will dictate who will care for your minor children. This can be costly and time-consuming for your family and you have no say over how your assets are to be handled or distributed after you are deceased. Most people believe that they do not have enough assets or property to make up an “estate,” to create a Will. However, the facts are that if you have assets or property over $10,000 ($20,000 if it goes to your spouse) you will be subject to a full probate administration through the State of New Jersey. In addition to simple Wills another solution that the Law Of ce of Gail L. Abrams located in Watchung, New Jersey provides is to establish a Living Trust for ease of probate to your heirs when you pass away. Many people do a Living Trust if they have disputes within the family or they have real estate outside of the state of New Jersey. Out of state real estate would require another probate proceeding to occur without a Trust. Having a Living Trust avoids multiple probate proceedings. Additionally, many single people do a Living Trust because it helps organize their affairs so when they pass away, their heirs know where all the assets are located. In addition to creating a Will or Living Trust everyone should have supplemental documents such as a Living Will, a Power of Attorney for Health Care, and a Power of Attorney for Assets to protect them and their assets should they become ill and unable to care for themselves or their property. Many financial institutions do not accept a Power of Attorney for Assets unless it has been previously led with them. They may not accept a Power of Attorney for Assets that is more than three years old. A new one would have to be prepared. This is a complex area of law and these documents should only be prepared by a quali ed estate-planning attorney. Gail L. Abrams has been in practice for 25 years and specializes in Estate Planning. We are offering virtual consultations. No need to meet in person. No contact meetings can be arranged. You can contact her of ce at (908) 753-4155 to discuss your situation or e-mail her at gabrams@sia nancial.com. EVERYONE NEEDS A WILL L ’ V By Gail L. That may seem a bold statement, but I believe it is true for many reasons. Loneliness and solitude lead to depression, loss of appetite and weight loss, and a generalized feeling of despair. When we are very young, our entire world is our family. Our parents and siblings provide all we need, and that continues until we enter a childcare community. In today’s world, most likely, that is daycare, preschool, or a group babysitting situation. From there, we enter school, and our social needs are met for decades. Today’s young adults may spend close to another decade on their education before entering the work world and may do so having amassed an incredible number of personal contacts with whom they have interacted. Our careers typically involve socializing, even if we are working remotely, as so many are doing in the Covid-era. Zoom meetings, conference calls, work lunches all involve some sort of social interaction. Even as we lament this time and we feel like it is taking us away from a “never-ending attempt to finish our work”, it is still social involvement, which many find nourishing. Raising a family is perhaps the most social time of life for many. Our children are our social conduits, introducing us to many of our contacts. Arrange a playdate for one’s daughter, and it involves social interaction. Plan to carpool to a baseball practice, and more social interaction. Granted, texting and emailing take the place of a true conversation, but there is a social interaction, and one knows someone is at the other end of the message. Those incredibly busy and demanding years seem endless, and it feels as if we will never slow down and then… Suddenly, we are seniors, and unless we go out of our way to interact with others, it can be a very lonely existence. In our personal experience, our very social Mom (my Mom-in-law) was living in a beautiful apartment by herself after our Dad died. Her voice was still perky, but she was losing weight, less aware of her schedule, just not “herself.” When we moved her to Chelsea at Warren, we saw a change for the better, even if it took her a while to see it herself. From the beginning, she began to play cards, join in Happy Hour, look forward to meals, participate in various activities. She wanted to be a part of things, be with people, and share, as she had always done. It is my belief that all this involvement has added years to her life, and good ones, at that. Not every family can provide such a home for their senior loved one, but I believe that regardless of where Mom or Dad is living, be sure to provide socialization for them. It will lift their spirits to talk with others about “the good old days” or “the kids” (who are in their 70s) to find commonality, revive interest and nurture them. You may even see a change in their overall wellness, and a desire to live a fuller life. SOCIALIZING SO IMPORTANT FOR SENIORS Senior Corner Perhaps never in our lives it is as important to socialize as when we are in our later years. That may seem a bold statement, but I believe it is true for many reasons. Loneliness and solitude lead to depression, loss of appetite and weight loss, and a generalized feeling of despair. Suddenly, we are seniors, and unless we go out of our way to interact with others, it can be a very lonely existence.

NJ Lic. No. #4446 908-756-0017 www.HigginsFuneralHome.com established 1868 Over the past many years, I have had the privilege of meeting many families concerned for the care of their loved ones and most frightened of the prospect of applying for Medicaid. Without a doubt, the actual application process is enough to send one’s blood pressure soaring. However, as complicated and as difficult as it is, their primary concern is always caring: “once I get past this what will happen to mom/dad” “will they continue to get cared for properly” “will they be left penniless without any options for services” “will their needs be met with compassion and dignity” Of course if there is a spouse the concerns are two-fold. How will the spouse survive financially after spending down? Where will he/she live and can they maintain their lifestyle choices? Medicaid for the ABD (aged, blind, disabled) truly is the solution to this dilemma. Ideally everyone wants to remain at home and if appropriate Medicaid will provide home care services. Of course, the level of care would be higher in a nursing facility but for the right person with the right program in place, this ideal placement can very well be a reality. Unfortunately, when someone requires 24/7 care their only option may be long term care (either a nursing home or an assisted living). But rest assured wherever one chooses for care-your loved ones will be taken care of and Medicaid will cover medical expenses. Another common question: Why Medicaid? I already have Medicare? While the 2 words sound similar the programs offer very different services. Medicare is an entitlement to those that paid in and are eligible for this insurance. While many health care professionals accept Medicare insurance, Medicare does not provide long term care services. Here comes Medicaid to the rescue! And as long as the individual continues to meet the Medicaid criteria they can remain on this program for life. Medicaid offers an array of benefits for the community and most importantly will cover full costs at a Nursing Home as well as an Assisted Living. (The applicant’s income is always turned over as the cost share.) MEDICAID DONE RIGHT: This all sounds amazing for one needing this assistance, however in order to qualify you must go through the very grueling and tedious Medicaid application process. This requires a 5-year financial look back that is very detailed and many other verifications are needed as well. The financial process is the most daunting and most involved. Many accounts may have been forgotten as they have since been closed but these too are subject to verification. The process must be done properly and the Board of Social Services can and will ask for verification to be submitted within a specified time period. Deadlines must be met or the application will be denied. While it’s reassuring to know care is available it is important to meet the very strict criteria imposed by the state. Please look ahead for future discussions to address many of the issues relating to this process. Please visit us at www.applicationpros. com or call for any questions you may have.
