When she was very young, her father (known in her family as Grandpa Jack) told her stories about a small mouse whom he named Georgie Creepmouse. Georgie had many adventures, and his stories were told and retold as the family grew. During her career as an elementary and preschool teacher, Gretchen found ways to work stories of all sorts into her teaching. Georgie Creepmouse’s adventures were featured each year in her preschool classes. Later, Gretchen rekindled her interest in art and began to draw the mouse character she’d met long before in her father’s stories. She studied with former Warren artist Mindy Lighthipe and refined her skills. The mouse drawings seemed to center around food, and so Gretchen decided to produce a cookbook of traditional recipes for her family. This drawing, entitled A Mouse and his Pancakes, became the title illustration for the section on breads. Currently, Gretchen is editing and illustrating her father’s stories and producing books for future descendants of Grandpa Jack to enjoy. Gretchen now lives in Warren, NJ, with her husband, her cat, and untold numbers of “creepmice.” You can contact her at creepmouse21@gmail.com. A Season of Renewal & Celebration Welcome to the Warren-Watchung edition of our April issue! As the days grow longer and the sunshine begins to warm our neighborhoods again, spring brings with it a wonderful sense of renewal. After the quiet of winter, there is a new energy in the air. People are getting outside, gathering with friends and family, and enjoying everything our communities have to o er. This season is especially meaningful to me personally. This year, Mother’s Day will be a particularly special celebration in my family, as both of my daughters have recently become mothers themselves. Becoming a grandmother has been such a joyful and emotional milestone. Watching my daughters step into motherhood and seeing the bond that is already forming with the next generation reminds me just how powerful and beautiful family connections truly are. Mother’s Day is a time to celebrate those bonds, whether it’s sharing a special brunch or dinner, finding the perfect gift at a local boutique, or giving the special women in your life a day of well-deserved pampering at one of our wonderful local salons and spas. Throughout this issue, you’ll find many local businesses ready to help you make the day truly memorable. We are also proud to feature our Women-Owned Business Directory, highlighting the incredible women who have built, nurtured, and grown businesses right here in our own neighborhoods. As a woman business owner myself, I know firsthand the dedication, perseverance, and passion it takes to build something meaningful. Supporting these businesses means supporting families, dreams, and the strength of our local community. In addition, this issue includes our Faith, Hope & Joy - Houses of Worship section, o ering readers a place to connect with churches and services during the Easter season. For many, this is a meaningful time of reflection, faith, and gathering with loved ones. Our adorable cover is graced with a whimsical painting of an endearing mouse napping atop a stack of flu y pancakes. Our cover artist, Gretchen Foss Thomas, was inspired by stories told by her father of a small mouse named Georgie Creepmouse. She titled the piece, A Mouse and His Pancakes. While there are many wonderful articles in this issue, don’t miss our Campers & Caviar column. Ms. Valentine discusses the importance of setting boundaries - something we can all reflect upon and improve at. It may be di cult, but it will be one of the best acts of selflove you can carry out! So, get outside, enjoy the sunshine, explore your community, and support the wonderful local businesses that make it thrive. Stay local - and #TellThemWeSentYou! Wishing you a beautiful spring and a very Happy Mother’s Day. All the best, Anna Petro Publisher, The Connection Magazine A Note From Our Publisher... CONTRIBUTING WRITERS Gail Bicknell, James J. Knee discomfort often stems from overuse tendon injuries, arthritis related joint irritation or lingering strains that never fully healed. These problems limit mobility, interfere with daily activities and may cause lasting damage to the structures that support the knee. Key Symptoms of Chronic Knee Pain • Dull, achy pain at rest • Pain that increases during and after walking, climbing stairs or exercise • Reliance on pain medication to get through the day Many patients also experience stiffness and weakness or difficulty bearing weight, all of which can worsen without proper treatment. Why Traditional Treatments Often Fall Short Physical therapy and cortisone injections have long been used to manage knee pain, but they often fall short over time because they do not target the underlying problems which is often joint degeneration (arthritis). These interventions often temporarily reduce discomfort without stimulating true healing. At Performance Ortho, your care begins with a clear, comprehensive plan on day one. Our board-certified surgeons, physicians, and rehabilitation experts work side by side to identify the true source of your knee pain and restore your mobility quickly and safely. “We always start with conservative options and advance only when necessary, with the hope of avoiding surgery altogether,” says Dr. Mejia. Introducing Focused Shockwave Therapy Performance Ortho’s most recent non-invasive option for knee pain relief is Focused Shockwave Therapy. This FDA-Cleared treatment delivers high-energy acoustic waves to stimulate stem cells and other natural healing factors within the knee. This treatment increases blood flow and promotes repair of injured tendons, ligaments and joint tissue. Although Shockwave Therapy can support healing in many chronic tendon and joint conditions, it is especially powerful for persistent knee pain that has not responded to rest therapy or injections. Many patients experience immediate reductions in knee pain along with improved stability and range of motion. This treatment can be paired with other regenerative medicine procedures like stem cell therapy, platelet rich plasma (PRP) or prolotherapy to enhance long-term outcomes. Dr. Mejia explains, “One of the most rewarding aspects of Focused Shockwave Therapy is how quickly patients experience improvements in both pain and mobility. By integrating this treatment into our individualized care model, patients achieve faster relief along with lasting improvements in function. Focused Shockwave Therapy is a versatile, non-surgical solution that aligns perfectly with our treatment philosophy to avoid surgery whenever possible.” Benefits of Shockwave Therapy • Covered by Medicare and most insurances • Precise and targeted application • Non-invasive with no adverse effects • Deep tissue treatment • No medications or injections Next Steps Performance Ortho specializes in non-surgical, evidence-based treatments that change lives. If knee pain is affecting your mobility or quality of life, it is time to explore Focused Shockwave Therapy. If insurance coverage is a concern, we offer no-cost insurance verification and transparent pricing. Meet Your Expert: Dr. Joseph Mejia Dr. Mejia is a triple board-certified specialist in Pain Management, Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation and Sports Medicine. THE WARREN-WATCHUNG CONNECTION PAGE 10 APRIL/MAY 2026 theconnectionsnj.com The donor spouse cannot reclaim the assets once transferred to the trust. That trade-off can be part of the strategy, especially when anticipating tax law changes. Each spouse can create a SLAT for the other but be careful to avoid the so-called “Reciprocal Trust Doctrine,” which if successfully advanced by the IRS, could render the trusts ineffective. If you are in need of assistance with these or other estate planning and wealth administration topics, please do not hesitate to contact our law office for immediate assistance at info@norris-law.com or 908-722-0700. High-net-worth individuals and families often find that basic wills and beneficiary designations fall short of assuring tax efficiency, asset protection, and multi-generational wealth transfer. Concerns about avoiding unnecessary estate taxes, protecting assets for children, and seeking structures beyond a simple trust often point to the need to explore more advanced planning strategies. FAQ #1: How does a Dynasty Trust work? A Dynasty Trust is designed to hold wealth and pass it across multiple generations while minimizing transfer taxes. Instead of passing outright to heirs, assets remain in a trust that can benefit children, grandchildren, and beyond. Owned by the trust rather than any individual, assets may also receive a layer of protection from creditors or certain legal claims, such as divorce proceedings. Typically irrevocable, these trusts require their own tax identification number and filings. They can be managed by a family member, a professional trustee or bank, or a combination of both, if the donor believes the beneficiary may not handle the money appropriately. Federal estate and gift tax exemptions are currently historically high (up to $15 million per person). In some states the length of trusts is limited; in others, they Complex financial lives require complex planning. can continue for generations. In New Jersey, dynasty trusts (always irrevocable and perpetual) can last indefinitely. FAQ #2: How do a Charitable Lead Trust and a Charitable Remainder Trust differ? Both structures combine philanthropic goals with financial planning, but reverse who benefits first. • Charitable Remainder Trust (CRT): The individual or family receives an annual payment from the trust for a defined period; the remaining assets go to charity at the end of the period. • Charitable Lead Trust (CLT): The charity receives income for a set term; the remaining assets pass to heirs or other beneficiaries. With this timing difference, tax treatment and planning uses vary. CRTs can combine income tax deferral with philanthropic goals; CLTs can accomplish wealth-transfer strategies and accelerate large income tax charitable deductions. FAQ #3: How does a SLAT work? A Spousal Lifetime Access Trust (SLAT) is an irrevocable trust created by one spouse to benefit the other. Assets transferred into SLAT are generally from the donor spouse’s taxable estate, plus future appreciation. During the beneficiary spouse’s lifetime, distributions may be made to that spouse and other beneficiaries, typically descendants, indirectly supporting the household. Afterward, remaining assets can be passed on to children or other chosen beneficiaries. THE WARREN-WATCHUNG CONNECTION PAGE 11 APRIL/MAY 2026 theconnectionsnj.com s the ’25 tax season is nearly complete, ‘26 is upon us. Current implementation and expansion of the One Big Beautiful Bill Act (OBBBA) and mid-term elections are front and center. I hope your tax season was stress-free, though of course some will require extensions. Individuals are enjoying the benefits of the OBBBA, including a more generous standard deduction, along with the supplemental senior standard deduction. This continues the trend of fewer taxpayers itemizing deductions and instead claiming the standard amount. This reduces the benefits of mortgage interest and other itemized elements. In turn, this diminishes the tax benefits of homeownership, adding to the affordability issue. Which is most acute for first-time buyers. Not surprisingly, many clients inquire how best to structure finances to help the next generation afford their first home. Perhaps the increased state tax itemized deductions will slow this trend, particularly in the tri-state area. A valuable deduction for businesses is the immediate expense provisions. This should serve to increase investment across the board. For successful pass-through business owners, the 20% Qualified Business Income deduction can result in significant savings, as the deduction is typically against the taxpayer’s marginal (top) tax rate. Business and individual taxpayers should focus on how the new positive tax provisions of the OBBBA will be implemented Whatever the administration or tax policy, we stand ready to help our clients plan and adapt to the best possible financial outcomes. and how best to leverage them in the future to achieve business and personal economic goals. Although the provisions of the OBBBA were made permanent, the reality, of course, is that no tax provision is truly permanent. Any current tax law change will require the support of President Trump and the Republicans who control the House and Senate. However, this is a slim balance of power. This majority will be tested in the upcoming midterm elections. Under House of Representatives (House) rules, a simple majority vote is required to pass legislation, and all seats are up for election every 2 years. One-third of Senate seats are up for election every 2 years. Republicans currently hold a 219 to 213 advantage in the House and a 53 to 47 advantage in the Senate. Using history as a guide, the upcoming midterm elections have not been kind to the incumbent president. According to The American Presidency Project, Univ CA, since 1982, the party that controlled the White House in the last eleven 4-year mid-term elections has lost a cumulative 233 House seats and 32 Senate seats. Since 1982, only 1 Republican and 1 Democratic president gained seats, respectively, the last was in 2002. Opinion, if prior history is to repeat itself, the party that controls the executive branch will have difficulty maintaining the majority in both arms of Congress. If bipartisan support is needed, passing significant tax legislation would be unlikely. I cannot recall many financial issues with the support of both Democrats and Republicans alike. DON’T RISK LOSING PRICELESS MEMORIES! A La Mode, but about bringing people together through clothing. What I loved finding out was that their inspiration came not from celebrities, Tik Tokers or Couture brands; but from the people and world directly around them. For Roxie, her older sister’s style helped inspire her to seek a look of her own; for Sarah, her mom works in print media. Praise for the sustainability and shelf life of print media-something obviously front and center for a magazine like this. Drawing inspiration from their everyday lives, and a chance encounter with “The Anchor” (one of the oldest student newspapers in the country) inspired them to forge their own. In closing, I asked them where they wanted to see fashion go. And in their answers the two core values of A La Mode were made loud and clear. 1) This is for everyone. 2) Sustainability is paramount. Let’s break that down. 1. Fashion is for everyone; without it we lose the power of individuality and we stop caring. You don’t need a lot of money or access to the latest runway pieces to be “A La Mode”. Sometimes all you need is a piece you love, confidence and a smile! 2. There’s so much junk out there. From cheap fabrics bleeding microplastics into your skin to state-sized landfills filled with clothing less than a year old, sustainability must be upheld if we want to keep this little place called Earth spinning. In short, buy less, buy better and wear them well. Sometimes people are stubborn, I’m stubborn! (I’m Italian American with an Aries Zodiac; I truly can’t help it.) But the time we lower our veil of stubbornness is the time we get truly inspired. And talking with Roxie and Sarah was truly inspiring. If you get anything from this article, or from A La Mode itself, I think it should be this. Don’t knock Gen Z, they care more than you think, and work just as hard as we do. And that fills me with hope for our future and will hopefully fill pages of magazines for years to come. rowing up in the late 90’s (don’t google how old that makes me), 90% of my entertainment and learning came from print. TV and computers were luxuries. Nowadays the average household has a minimum of 3-4 screens per person. And that’s disheartening. It’s easy to read these opening sentences and assume that the primary culprit is Gen Z. But boy was I proved wrong when I met Roxie and Sarah from A La Mode. What is A La Mode? A La Mode is an exclusively print fashion magazine available only through Watchung Hills Regional High School. It is produced, shot and printed by high school students, with Roxie and Sarah at the helm. What began as a dream in 2023 for these entrepreneurs, has now become a reality with a staff of 30-50 students producing a full-fledged publication-with no backing from the Board of Ed. Talk about hustle! The thing I love about A La Mode’s concept is that it’s so much more than a magazine. Roxie and Sarah have used their platform as a way to foster community events in their high school. They have advertised their thrift shop fundraiser, in which students bought gently used clothing, which was a huge success, and got students excited to experience the sustainable side of fashion. I don’t know about you, but I can’t stand people who don’t care. Their brush-off attitude is exactly the kind of thing frying our brains. So, during my brief chat with Roxie and Sarah, I was surprised and delighted to see how much they cared not only about STYLE. PRINT. PURPOSE Fashion, Sustainability and the Power of Print By David J. Marzano Manager, Adams Fine Clothing and Tuxedo The thing I love about A La Mode’s concept is that it’s so much more than a magazine. A tiny symbol represents the days lived by a person; their accomplishments, goals, failures, dreams, nightmares, and/or reprehensible actions. Most of us have a choice-free will to act in a way that makes us feel pride, happiness, success, love. Defining ourselves is a desire, and it becomes a guideline for our actions. When I think about the importance of the dash, one specific day consumes my heart and my head. It was June 29, 1969, a hot Sunday, the day we buried my father. I was still in shock, having watched with horror as he unexpectedly died, crumbling to the bed, a big man reduced to a pile on the blanket, just the morning before. His funeral was at 11:00 a.m. that Sunday morning. Herman Aron Finkel, forty-five years old. The sign on the door to the chapel where our service was to take place specified the dates of his birth and death. There was nothing to denote the dash of his life, of course. He was a husband, a father of three daughters, a brother, cousin, uncle, and friend. My family held each other tightly. My father’s dash left us with no guidance, no direction, just days of living. The dash was not hinting at what was to come. It probably never does properly highlight the agony of such loss. Arriving early at the funeral home, I noticed the sign on the door to another service, which began at 9:00 a.m. It was for a boy named Marc. His dates said he was twenty-three years old, and his death came from a motorcycle accident. Although he was half the age of my father, his dash was the same size. What had he done in the period between his birth and death? His family’s dreams crashed with that accident, but where was that mentioned or acknowledged in the symbolic line between his birth and death? I noticed a third door, a man whose funeral was at 1:00 p.m. He was ninety years old, twice the age of my father, close to four times the age of Marc. Didn’t he deserve a longer dash line? As I grow older, I am more mindful of the enormous responsibility of the symbol, that of representing one’s life. My thoughts bring me to my own dash. How will I be remembered by my family and those for whom I have cared so much in my lifetime? I want my life to have a deeper meaning to feel honest and impactful, have gravitas and value. I want people to have learned from me, to have been seen by me, to have felt my concern and adoration for them. A lofty goal, yes, but one I absolutely and intentionally embrace! My path is about family, friends and community and making an impact that glows with tolerance and empathy for others. It feels comforting to know the road I want to have traveled by the end. Let living our best lives count all the wondrous days between the dash! theconnectionsnj.com SENIOR LIVING PAGE 24 ike so many diseases or conditions, dementia treatments are evolving. Living in south Florida, we interface with countless people who are either experiencing the decline of acuity or caregiving a loved one. Early recognition is, of course, critical to taking advantage of preventative options, and it is now considered more important than ever to live a healthy lifestyle. This appears to be one of the best weapons. My darling father-in-law died at 91 years old of Alzheimer’s Disease in February 2013, and losing the man we knew and loved long before he died was terribly painful. Recently, however, we lost a lifelong friend who was only in his mid-seventies and had suffered the most horrific decline for over ten years. We were shocked when we began to notice changes when he was in his sixties. How could that be? His diagnosis of primary progressive aphasia and Alzheimer’s Disease dealt a blow to all of us who knew and loved this brilliant athlete and remarkable human being. If there was nothing to add to this story, I would not be writing this column. But there is much to encourage us, and that is what I wish to highlight. Granted, I would love to shout from the rooftops that there is a medical cure for Alzheimer’s Disease and all degenerative neurological disorders. Sadly, I cannot do that. But I can tell you that there are countless studies, trials and reports that are surfacing, and as a fervent fundraiser for Alzheimer’s research, I do believe that day is coming. What I can share with you, on good authority, is that there is a link to staving off many of the symptoms of Alzheimer’s and other forms of dementia. That link is with healthy lifestyle habits. Although this will not come as a shock, it is clearly a statement to take seriously. Eating clean foods 80% of the time, exercising regularly, doing puzzles or other acuity challenges, reducing stressors on the body and mind all add up to making a great difference in mental decline. Perhaps a step beyond “use it or lose it”, filling our minds and bodies with good common sense approaches can prove invaluable. At a rally for a recent Alzheimer’s Association fundraiser, our community hosted a remarkable couple as our keynote speakers. Only in their early seventies, Dave and Claire are experiencing firsthand the effects of the disease. Dave has been suffering for the past three years and has given credence to the philosophy that to control the disease is a multi-pronged approach. He and Claire are living a very clean and healthy lifestyle; in addition to daily workouts both physically and mentally, he is taking advantage of the newest combination of meds available, and he is sharing his journey with all who are interested…and there are many of us! We were grateful for the opportunity to see an optimistic couple who have embraced their future with hope, support, love and commitment to travel the road together, wherever it leads.
