We always encourage you to follow your personal style compass while acknowledging trends. Getting dressed should be fun! Let’s not take ourselves too seriously while we talk about spring trends. Here are the Top 5 trends on our radar for the season ahead. Think Pink Keep your eyes on greens, reds & jewel tones, but pink takes center stage. The soft variety is strongest for spring, but bold pops of fuchsia are also making statements. If you don’t wear pink because of your coloring, wear pink on the bottom, or grab a pink shoe or bag to keep the hue away from your face. Sheer Delight The most daring sheer styles involve wearing some knickers under a sheer skirt or dress. It’s sure to turn some heads. At T&O, we have enjoyed a few seasons of sheer fun already and learned it’s never as see-through as you’re afraid it might be. This is a fun moment to play with layers. You can strategically cover parts that you don’t want on display. Pump Up the Volume Wide-leg pants are still big from denim to trousers. It’s not as challenging as you might think and “zshooshing” helps. This is where a stylist at any boutique comes in handy. More than anything, shoes matter. Opt for a slim silhouette on the toe. If you can’t stand a wide-leg pair of pants, stick with your skinnies. You’re not breaking any laws. Ultimately, if you’re comfortable in your clothes, you’re going to look great. Try playing with volume on top instead! Tailor Made Tailored suiting keeps going strong. Never underestimate the power of a blazer or trousers to elevate your style. The big thing for spring is vest and shorts sets. Shorts are outside my comfort zone, but in an effort to not take myself too seriously, I ordered myself a set from Apiece Apart for spring. Shorts are less daunting when you’re in a heel. Then they are treated more as a skirt alternative. I’m a sucker for a set because of the versatility. You can wear shorts with heels, a cashmere tee, and a neck mess out to dinner. I throw on the vest with my favorite denim and wear it as a top. It can also be layered over a tee, under a blazer, and more. Floral Fest I am always on board with flowers, and the fashion gods agree for spring. When it comes to florals this spring, the bigger the scale, the better. Nothing is easier to wear, so go big or go small when it comes to this trend - just remember to stop and smell (and wear) the flowers. Bonus Trend: Shop Local If you’re perplexed while getting dressed, our first recommendation is to SHOP SMALL. Great service goes hand-in-hand with local stores in your community. You will always find the guidance you need when you shop small. Looking for fashion help or just a great place to find the best on-trend buys? Tea & Oranges has both! Visit them at 316 Springfield Ave. in Summit. Children's CREATIVECORNER Pairing Needles and Hooks with Yarn By Carolyn Hanson pattern stitch. The stitch count on the gauge swatch must match the pattern. Rows per inch (length) are less critical because it is easily adjusted when creating the garment by adding or eliminating rows. There is one variable in obtaining gauge and that is you. Yes, we are all different. Some of us are tight knitters/crocheters, others are loose, and yet others are just right. Tight and loose knitters/crocheters will need to adjust needle size, up or down, to achieve the correct gauge. This is why it’s important to create a gauge swatch at the beginning of each project. If the gauge does not match the pattern requirements, change the needle up one size if there are too many stitches per inch (stitches too small), or go down one size if there are too few stitches per inch (stitches too large). Continue working on the gauge swatch until the gauge is achieved. If the ball band is no longer available, another way to determine yarn weight is by “wraps per inch” (WPIs). To determine WPIs, wrap the yarn around a ruler for 1” without stretching and without gaps. Count the wraps on the ruler’s front. Compare this number to a chart like the one below. This will provide the approximate yarn weight/ type. Use this chart to help with pairing yarn with needles/hooks. Print and laminate for handy reference or take a photo. You’ll definitely want to keep this guide! hich comes first, the yarn or the pattern? Answer: Either one. The pattern will suggest the yarn weight, needle/hook (aka needle) size and gauge needed to achieve the design. Starting with the yarn, the ball band (the paper sleeve around the yarn) will identify the yarn’s weight, needle size and gauge. The objective is to match these key elements on both the pattern and the yarn’s ball band for best results and accurate sizing. Let’s look at each element. Yarn weight is the thickness of the yarn. It ranges from lace (thin) to super bulky (thick). Suggested needles (knitting) and hooks (crochet) are identified by their diameter from thin (<1 mm) to thick (> 1”). Yarn and needles need to work together. Thin yarn uses small/thin needles. Thick yarn uses large/thick needles. Using a thin needle with thick yarn will generate a stiff fabric. Using a thick needle with thin yarn will generate a stitch that is loose and shapeless. Gauge is the number of stitches per inch (horizontal) and rows per inch (vertical). Gauge is critical when making anything that goes around the body (e.g., mitten, hat, and sweater) because stitches per inch are the measurement used around the body (width) to determine size. Achieving the required horizontal gauge will ensure that the finished item will meet the chosen size. This measurement must be verified before beginning the project by making a gauge swatch, a 4” x 4” square using the recommended W

Yes, your child participates in a variety of activities. The magic of camp, however, is found in the things that happen while participating in all the camp has to offer. Step Out of Your Comfort Zone – Camp is full of a range of new experiences like trying a new sport, zipping down a zip-line, living in a bunk with other campers, or, if not at a sleepaway, learning a new skill, craft, or hobby. Summer should be all about letting your kids step out of their comfort zone and maybe even reinvent themselves. Independence – Just going to camp and being away from their parents helps children trust their judgment and prompts them to do things independently. From getting on the camp bus each morning to picking their own activities for the day to choosing their food at mealtime, each day presents opportunities for small steps towards independence. Limiting Screen Time – Many camps don’t allow for smartphones or any personal electronics. Children put their screens away and communicate face-to-face when participating in activities. They get to practice communication skills that often get lost in texting or on social Confidence Building – When children pass a swim test to the next level, get a bullseye in archery, or make a new friend, they are building confidence. Each success makes them feel good about themselves. Camp is full of confidence-building moments all summer long. Strong Friendships – Camp is a supportive environment where children are together in a non-academic environment and where the focus is on fun and connecting with others. CAMPCONFIDENTIAL Summer Camp is MagicalDon’t miss the upcoming Camp Fairs! Build Resilience – At camp, kids may be confronted with tough situations like getting over homesickness or not passing the deep-water test at first. Dealing with hard things like these and knowing they are ok is a valuable life skill for all children. Building resiliency is an important skill that all kids need to possess to be able to handle life’s challenges. Reinvent Yourself – If your child is known as the shy, quiet kid at home, camp offers the chance to reset and be whoever they would like to be. Now is the time to plan an amazing summer for your child. Come to a camp fair to explore a great variety of summer camps. It’s a free opportunity for NJ families to meet directors from traditional day camps, sleep-away camps, or specialty camps like sports, adventure, travel, academic, arts/performing arts, STEM, robotics, nature, and more. Come to some or all of the fairs to understand your options. Like all social media, though, it comes with risks. Let’s dive into what makes Snapchat cool, the dangers you should know about, and tips to stay safe while keeping your Snap streaks alive. What’s the Hype? Snapchat isn’t like Facebook (thankfully). It’s about sending goofy pictures that disappear in 24 hours. Add some filters, crazy lenses, effects, and boom – you’ve got a Snap. It’s simple, fun, and fleeting. Plus, there’s Snapstreaks (daily Snaps with friends) and Snapmap (real-time location sharing), which makes you feel super connected. It is not all sunshine and rainbow filters, though. While the photos disappear, the risks don’t. What You Should Know 1. Screenshots Are Forever Snap says your photos vanish, but if someone screenshot them, they’re saved. Sure, you get notified, but then what? That photo could be shared, edited, or used in ways you didn’t expect. Yes, there IS software that takes screenshots secretly. 2. Stranger Danger Random friend requests? No thanks! Some accounts might be fake or hacked, leading to creepy messages, spam, or worse. Always know who is Snapping with you. 3. Snapmap Oversharing Snapmap shows where you are in real time. This is cool when you’re meeting up with friends, but risky if someone hacks your account or if the wrong person is watching. Pro tip: Use Ghost Mode to keep your location private. 4. Data Collection Snapchat collects info about you, from what you like to where you’ve been. That’s shared with advertisers and even third parties. Keep this in mind every time you Snap. How to Snap Safely Here’s how to keep the fun and ditch the drama: • Be Honest About Your Age Snapchat has a minimum age of 13, but realistically, it’s better for older teens. Don’t lie about your age – it helps filter ads and limits creepy content. • Control Your Settings Adjust your privacy settings so only friends can see your Snaps and stories. Turn off location sharing or use Ghost Mode to keep your Snapmap safe. • Think Before You Send Once you hit send, it’s out there. Even if it disappears in 24 hours, someone could screenshot it or misuse it. If it’s not something you’d share IRL, don’t Snap it. • Don’t Add Random People Treat Snap like real life – don’t talk to strangers. Adding random users can lead to spam, inappropriate messages, or worse. • Involve Your Parents (Sometimes) Yeah, I know – cringe. But sit down with them to set up your privacy settings. After that, you’re free to roll your eyes and walk away when they ask how to add a filter. Bottom Line Snapchat is all about fun and connection, but it’s up to you to stay safe. Use it wisely, protect your info, and keep your Snapping drama-free. Stay safe, and happy Snapping! TEEN VOICE Cyber Awareness: Staying Safe While Snapping By Adithya Bharath S

PAGE 25 KIDZ CONNECTION theconnectionsnj.com have a friend whose family is from Sweden. When I see her in the rain, snow or cold, she is outside with her kids. Her family says, “There is no such thing as bad weather, only bad clothing.” This philosophy has gained popularity as American families are learning about Scandinavian parenting techniques. If dressed appropriately, being outside in most kinds of weather is actually the healthiest thing you can do. So get outside! There is a lot to do in this area, even in winter and into the muddy months of spring. You can start with the jam-packed calendar of activities at the Environmental Education Center on Lord Stirling Road in Basking Ridge. The crown jewel of the late winter calendar at the EEC is its Maple Sugaring program. The program is fun and informative for all ages. Starting at the Center, the group takes a short half-mile hike to the Maple Sugaring shack where a naturalist explains the history of maple sugaring that began in the Northeast centuries ago with the Native Americans and the Colonists. The program also includes a demonstration of how the trees are tapped with both modern and historical sap-collecting methods, as well as showing the boiling process that produces delicious local maple syrup. The 60-minute program is offered every Saturday and Sunday in February at 12pm and 2pm. Tickets are $6 for seniors and students and $7 for adults. They are available at the EEC and it is recommended that you arrive 30-40 minutes early to purchase the tickets. There is a lot to do while you wait! One tip-wear warm clothing and boots or other appropriate footwear. The trails are likely to be muddy or covered in snow. If you have a Scout troop, you can contact the center about forming or joining a scouting group. Want to learn a little more about nature and meet some people while getting some exercise outdoors? Walking outdoors has been proven to benefit both your mental and physical health. Join one of the EEC’s “Woodland Walks.” This weekly walking group for adults is offered every Tuesday in February from 9-10am. A naturalist takes the group on a walk on the trails at a moderate pace with occasional breaks. The cost is $24 for the 4-week session for seniors, $28 for adults. There are loads of opportunities at the EEC for kids of all ages to get outdoors and connect with nature. The Young Explorers Club on Monday mornings is for infants through age five with a caregiver. KinderNats is on Mondays after school for kids ages 5-7. Swamp Kids is the perfect after-school activity on Thursdays for kids, ages 8-10, who love the outdoors. Older kids, ages 11-13, will love the Trailblazers program on Wednesdays. There are also one-day programs like Animal Tracks that take kids out on the hiking trails with a naturalist in search of animal tracks. All programs require registration. See the website at www.somersetcountyparks.org/environmental-education-center/pages/educational-public-programs-february-2025 to register and get more information on fees and available programs.
