THE WARREN-WATCHUNG CONNECTION PAGE 8 FEBRUARY/MARCH 2026 theconnectionsnj.com umbar spinal stenosis (LSS) is caused by age related changes that occur to your spine. These changes cause pressure on the spinal cord and nerves resulting in pain, burning, numbness and tingling into the legs, particularly when walking or standing. Relief is often found by leaning forward (such as pushing a shopping cart) or sitting. It is estimated that over 1 million Americans experience symptoms from lumbar spinal stenosis regularly. LSS is often caused by age-related degeneration, thickened ligaments, arthritis, or herniated discs. Dr. Joseph Mejia, a pain management specialist at Performance Ortho™ explains, “Lumbar stenosis restricts movement and mobility, significantly affecting quality of life. Without treatment, it can worsen over time, leading to chronic pain and further mobility issues. Before the introduction of the MILD® procedure, patients would frequently undergo a series of spinal injections aimed at reducing pain and inflammation. Initially, these injections would show promising results, but over time, patients often experienced diminishing benefits with repeated injections. In cases where spinal injections failed, patients would typically be referred to a spine surgeon for consultation. However, many opted to live with the condition rather than risk undergoing spinal surgery.” MILD® Procedure: The MILD® procedure is an FDA cleared, non-surgical treatment that addresses the root cause of lumbar stenosis and restores mobility while relieving pain. Dr. Mejia notes, “By relieving nerve compression through a precise, targeted procedure, MILD ® provides lasting relief while preserving spinal stability. Our patients report substantial improvements in walking distance, pain reduction, and overall function.” Benefits of MILD®: • 85% Patient satisfaction rate- 7x stand longer, 16x walk farther • 100,000+ procedures performed • Minimally invasive-no stitches or implants • Outpatient procedure-no hospital stay required • Quick recovery-most patients resume activities within days • Significant pain relief-proven to improve mobility and reduce discomfort At Performance Ortho™, we specialize in advanced, minimally invasive treatments tailored to each patient’s needs. If you or a loved one is struggling with lumbar stenosis, don’t wait. Contact us today to schedule an appointment and learn how the MILD® procedure can help restore your quality of life. THE WARREN-WATCHUNG CONNECTION PAGE 10 FEBRUARY/MARCH 2026 theconnectionsnj.com or more than 100 years, families throughout the Somerset Hills have placed their trust in Holy Cross Cemetery as a peaceful resting place for their loved ones. Before Holy Cross opened in 1924, Catholic families in the area relied on cemeteries that were nearly a two-hour round trip from Bernardsville. The community needed a cemetery closer to home. In early 1923, Our Lady of Perpetual Help Church in Bernardsville began exploring the purchase of a 22-acre property owned by William and Ellen Ryan. By October of that year, the parish received state approval to establish a cemetery, and the land was officially acquired. The first burials took place on Sunday, April 27, 1924, when mourners gathered to lay to rest Miss Maud L. Drummond, Mrs. Henry Lawer (Agnes), and Miss Marion K. Boudrean. Stewardship Rooted in Tradition For a century, Holy Cross Cemetery has been more than a final resting place. It has been a reflection of the values of the community it serves. Each generation has entrusted the cemetery with preserving memories, honoring faith traditions, and maintaining a space of dignity and respect. That responsibility continues today through thoughtful planning, careful maintenance, and a commitment to serving families with compassion and understanding at every stage of need. A Peaceful Setting for Generations Today, Holy Cross Cemetery continues its mission of compassionate service to families in Somerset Hills and the surrounding communities. Visitors often share how peaceful and welcoming the cemetery feels—a reflection of both the natural beauty of the grounds and the care provided by our dedicated team. Conveniently located off I-287 and Mount Airy Road, the surroundings are embraced on all sides by forest. In spring, vibrant azaleas, forsythia, and flowering shrubs brighten the landscape, bringing the grounds to life with color. Our staff maintains the cemetery yearround, ensuring a serene and respectful environment every season. Recent improvements include the large cross at our entrance and a new informational kiosk featuring helpful resources, quarterly clean-up dates and a map. Burial Options for Every Family Holy Cross Cemetery offers a full range of interment choices to meet a variety of needs and preferences with options available for a range of budgets and family preferences. • Traditional ground plots • Two mausoleums with single and true-companion crypts • Marble and glass niches • A tranquil Columbarium Garden for cremations • Reserved space on our perimeter for individual family mausoleums The cemetery is open daily from dawn to dusk, with interments scheduled Monday through Saturday mornings. To help visitors locate loved ones, our website includes an online burial locator, and our front-entrance kiosk provides a convenient Walk-to-Site QR code. You Are Welcome Here We invite you to visit Holy Cross Cemetery to experience its peaceful surroundings for yourself. If you have questions or would like to learn more about interment options, our office is always here to help. And it’s not because I’m a carefree 30-yearold bachelor looking for love in the desolate wasteland that is the NJ dating pool. It’s because of one very specific thing I see. Picture this, you’re at a nice restaurant, made a reservation months ahead of time. You’re at the bar, sipping a $35 martini (another gripe of mine, but I digress)... You see a couple walk in, the lady in a great dress and heels, full hair, and makeup. Her date? Looks something like Mr. “Old Me.” And you can’t help but think… Are they going to two different restaurants? I call this “The Great Mismatch.” One partner is dressed up, put together, and the other is… there. While I HOPE you’re not wearing hoodies and Lulu’s, men today think it’s ok to wear their everyday wear to date night, when in reality, it’s showing subtle signs of disrespect for your partner and the effort they put into their own looks. And who wants a relationship like that? But I know this is an argument I can’t make alone. So I’m calling in help. For this edition, I interviewed four special ladies in my life about what they look for on date night, asking them all the same questions. Here we go! A) What piece of clothing can a guy wear that instantly improves his style? B) What’s your perfect date night ‘fit’ for a guy? C) What are some style red flags you look out for on a date? Ok Ladies, take it away! C- 29, Registered Nurse, Hoboken (Engaged) FASHIONFLASH They Don’t Sell Hot Dogs Here By David J. Marzano Manager, Adams Fine Clothing A) I love when a guy is smart with layers. A nice dress shirt with a quarter zip, if it’s well fitted, it elevates a casual look. B) Perfect date night fit: nice pants and a clean dress shirt or quarter zip. I don’t like jeans and sneakers. I want to feel they put in an effort to look nice for me. C) Red flags - sweat shirts. I think you can put in more effort for a date night than a sweatshirt. If you want to be comfy, swap a sweatshirt for a sweater. It still gives cozy vibes but classier! C- 26, Speech Therapist, NJ (Married) A) A nice jacket goes a long way. It’s like the cherry on top of an outfit, so I like when people put extra thought into it! B) Perfect date night fit would be a combination of smart/casual! Dark jeans dressed up with a nice sweater or button up is a great look. C) Stains! Why is that still in your closet?! S- 31, Teacher, South Jersey (Single) A) Accessorizing and knowing how to do it well! B) Jeans and a sweater or flannel. Shoes matter too— they can be sneakers, but they can’t be run down, dirty work out shoes. C) Hats. Whether it’s something overly formal, or overly casual like you just came from the gym. No shorts or toes. F- 28, CBCP, NJ/NYC (It’s Complicated) A) Anything without a drawstring or elastic waist is impressive nowadays. B) You know I love a Chelsea boot. But specifically, a dark button down, grey tailored pants, and dark Chelsea boots. I’m a sucker for a good coat, too. C) FLANNELS. I HATE FLANNELS. Save it for the farm! And sneakers? My grandmother would clutch her pearls. Thanks Ladies! So on your next date night, don’t be afraid to put on those elevated dressy pieces! It’s ok to dress up, and in my mind (and these lovely ladies’ minds as well), putting time into your appearance is crucial. It shows you care and always will. So now if you’re reading this and realize you don’t have those date night essentials, come see your friendly neighborhood clothiers at Adams. We’ll get you kitted up. theconnectionsnj.com SHOPPING, DINING, BEAUTY & EVENTS PAGE 16 t has been a long winter. It has been a long school year-already. This time of year, we could all use a little magic. There is no better way to feel the magic than to lose yourself in a good musical. Great singing and performances immerse you in a story with an imaginative set, great costumes, a talented cast, and songs that you can’t help but sing days after you leave the theater. I know of two amazing productions from award-winning programs right in our backyards that the whole family can enjoy. Watchung Hills Regional High School in Warren will present the contemporary production, “The Lightning Thief: A Percy Jackson Musical” March 12-14th, and Ridge High School will perform the classic musical “Mary Poppins” March 5-7th. The drama department at Watching Hills Regional High School chose “The Lightning Thief: A Percy Jackson Musical” for its contemporary feel. Based on the wildly popular novel by Rick Riordan, the plot follows the adventures of Percy Jackson, a half-blood son of a Greek God. He sets out on a quest to retrieve Zeus’ stolen master lightning bolt after discovering his newly discovered powers that he cannot control. His quest takes him to the Underworld and back, requires him to solve a riddle of the Oracle, and makes him come to terms with the father who abandoned him. The story is full of humor, theatrical effects, and is set to an energetic rock score that is played by a four-piece rock band right on the stage. The play is sure to capture the imagination of the young and the young at heart. The content is family friendly, but probably best for children age 8 and up. Tickets to the performance in the modern and comfortable Watching Hills Performing Arts Center can be purchased at https://whrhs.booktix.com/. Ridge High School is going in a different direction with the classic “Mary Poppins.” This stage adaptation is based on P.L. Travers book and the Walt Disney classic movie of the same name. It is an irresistible story of a magical Nanny who “pops in” to spark a family’s imagination and help them to reunite and find each other again. Its message is timeless and so is the famous score. Numbers like “Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious,” “A Spoonful of Sugar” and “Practically Perfect” will have you dancing in your seat and singing along. There are also amazing theatrical effects that might include Mary Poppins flying through the air! The Ridge High School drama program is constantly ranked as one of the top in the state and has been nominated for, and won, several Rising Star awards from Paper Mill Playhouse. The Performing Arts Center is a state-of-the-art facility which has comfortable seating and a sunken pit for the live student orchestra. Tickets are available at https://ridgepac.bernardsboe.com/. So bring a little magic into your life. See a musical. It might help you to believe that-in the words of Mary Poppins-everything is possible, even the impossible! Anhelina Rozghon and her dance partner Artur Solomovych, based in New Jersey, are doing exactly that as they continue to rise on the national stage. Specializing in the Latin American program of ballroom sports dance, the duo has competed in 21 competitions across the United States, steadily building momentum and recognition. Their commitment has translated into strong results, including multiple victories, with five wins achieved in just the past five months, marking a clear surge in competitive success. A major milestone came this year when Anhelina and Artur transitioned from the Amateur Division to the Professional Division — a move that quickly proved wellearned. Before turning professional, the pair reached the final at the U.S. National Amateur Championship, confirming their standing among the top amateur competitors in the country. Just five months later, they made their debut at the Professional National Championship, where they once again reached the finals — this time in two professional categories. The rapid progression from amateur finalists to professional national finalists underscores the effectiveness of their disciplined approach and relentless work ethic. Their success is rooted in structure: consistent training, strict routines, and a long-term mindset focused on growth rather than shortcuts. Competition after competition, they have demonstrated that persistence and preparation can produce results at the highest levels. Anhelina Rozghon and Arthur Solomovych represent the growing presence of elite competitive ballroom talent in New Jersey, showing that dedication and consistency can lead to national recognition. They can vary in size and shape-think round, pentagonal, hexagonal or triangular orientation. They can be basic or elaborate. What is a granny square? It’s a crocheted motif that starts at the center and is worked outward in rounds. Each round uses a different color. A classic granny square is worked in clusters of double crochet with chains in between and double clusters in the corners to form a square. With each additional round, the granny square increases in size. The effect is a lacy looking square that resembles a quilt block. It is easily mastered by beginners, which makes it a popular first project. Granny squares are made separately; so it’s a great carry-along project. Once the squares are complete, they need to be arranged into the shape of the project and then stitched together to make just about anything. Each square needs to have the same number of stitches on each side And then there are the bags! The “Granny Square Beach Bag” by Catherine Neil is 5-14’ squares, 4 sides, and a bottom with crocheted handles. This one was made with scrap cotton yarn. Try adding a square to a baseball cap for fun. There are so many ways to embrace this trend! And of course, shawls and scarves. My “Catch the Wind” design uses 3 different motif sizes that fit together when assembled, i.e., four small squares equal one large square which equals two rectangles. The shawl used 3 different motif types. The large motif begins as a circle design…the small square is solid. The rectangle is a leaf motif woven into a border. Proud to share that this shawl went down the runway at Vogue Live NYC, January 2026. Patterns available on Ravelry. for easy assembly. First the squares are stitched together in column and then the long side or the columns are stitched. A favorite simple blanket is “One Big Granny Square Throw and Afghan” by Churchmouse Yarns and Teas. It’s literally just one giant granny square in the classic design. It can be made with variegated yarn with a long repeat, meaning the colors change after many yards. It gives the appearance of frequent color changes, however, the yarn does all the work. When it reaches the desired size, you’re done. No assembly required. Looking for cardigans? The latest trend is granny squares with a bit of faux fur in one round of the square. This cardigan uses only 16 large motifs, 4 for each sleeve, back, and front. After the squares are assembled, the entire garment is trimmed with an edging for a finished look. Granny squares are just as pop CREATIVECORNER Granny Squares Forever By Carolyn Hanson Book our Private Dining Room for all your SPECIAL EVENTS! theconnectionsnj.com SHOPPING, DINING, BEAUTY & EVENTS PAGE 20 n the musical Annie, we are told, “You are never fully dressed without a smile!” Although I am happy to smile any time, I break out in a bigger one upon hearing that phrase. I suppose I brighten because it is my mantra, and I remind myself frequently that people are attracted to warmth, interest, and yes, a smile. It automatically messages everyone that this person is approachable and may become a friend. Additionally, it makes our faces look so much more attractive as the corners of our mouths are lifted toward the sun. Moving into an already developed community in Florida after living almost my entire life in New Jersey offered many challenges-not the least was making friends and becoming part of the social fabric. Why would people want to engage? Why would they want to connect with me? Why would they stop and have a conversation? I returned to the basics and that included reminding myself to smile upon entering a room. I believe it is human nature to smile back when presented with a toothy grin. How can we not? Parents know firsthand how compelling their baby’s first smiles become. The excitement is overwhelming, as we tell ourselves they are happy, recognize, and want to connect with us. Regardless of how many tell the young parent it is only gas that makes that bubbly smile, it is infectious. It hardly matters the cause. It is our reaction, and then their reaction to us, that keeps the “smile cycle” growing. Making eye contact as we engage that smile is one of the first steps toward social development. If there is one gift that is free, universally recognized, encourages connection, and is easy to read, it is a smile. Frown or look disappointed and that, too, is comprehended. We are creatures who, by and large, read facial expression. A warm reaction is natural, perhaps even a hormonal response, to how the face glows when smiling. Traveling anywhere in the world, a smile is understood and may be a key to ascertaining the information we are seeking. Ask a stranger for directions, the best restaurant in the neighborhood, or where to shop, and wearing a smile virtually ensures their willingness to be helpful. Corners of the mouth turned upward seem to create a pact that because you are nice to me, I will be the same for you. I recognize there are times when smiling is simply impossible, and we all know that being disingenuous is unacceptable. We simply cannot and should not be untrue to ourselves or others. I hope those days are limited, and the worthy days of giving the gift of a smile to others brings you the gift of happiness as well. I SLICEOFLIFE The Best Gift to Give! By Ellyn Mantell

F R EE F I R S T S ES S ION if you live here, you should be exceptional, and if you’re struggling, that’s a personal failure. The competition doesn’t just come from school, either. Social media turns every achievement into something public. Acceptances, scores, internships, awards - they’re all posted, liked, compared. It creates the feeling that everyone else is moving forward while you’re standing still, even when that’s not true at all. What I wish adults understood is that pressure doesn’t always motivate. Sometimes it paralyzes. When everything feels high stakes, it becomes harder to take risks, harder to rest, and harder to enjoy being young. New Jersey teens aren’t lazy or ungrateful; we’re just stretched thin. This is not a call to lower standards or stop caring about education. It’s a call to rethink what exactly success looks like. Maybe success should include sleep. Maybe it should include time to breathe. New Jersey is proud of its students, but pride shouldn’t come at the cost of our mental health. We deserve to be more than just impressive statistics. Siya is a junior at Watchung Hills Regional High School. She loves singing, photography, and spending time with family. rowing up in New Jersey, you get used to hearing the same things over and over: best schools, top rankings, great opportunities. Adults say it like a compliment, like it automatically makes our lives easier. But being a teenager from New Jersey often feels less like an advantage and more like a constant race you didn’t even sign up for. In New Jersey, being “average” isn’t really an option. Everyone seems to be taking endless AP classes, juggling clubs, sports, jobs, and somehow still being told they should be doing more. It’s normal to compare schedules the way people compare resumes. If you’re not overwhelming yourself, it can feel like you’re falling behind, even when you’re exhausted. What makes it harder is how the stress is normalized. Being tired all the time is treated like a personality trait. Saying you slept four hours is almost a flex. When someone admits they’re overwhelmed, the response is usually, “Yeah, same,” not because we don’t care, but because we don’t know what else to say. Burnout has become part of the culture. A lot of this pressure comes from good intentions. Parents want stability. Schools want high achievement. New Jersey prides itself on success. But somewhere along the way, success became defined by constant productivity instead of actual learning or happiness. There’s an unspoken expectation that TEEN VOICE Being a Teen in New Jersey Means Having to Always Be “Ahead” By Siya Gokhale In New Jersey, being “average” isn’t really an option...
