The artwork is entitled Serenity. Sandy told us “My oil painting, Serenity, was inspired by dear friends of mine who were getting married last year. I wanted to give them an original painting of mine as a gift and I put a lot of thought into the subject matter. I love painting fruit and that led me to this still life as this couple relishes culinary pursuits. The classic and elegant feel in the mood of this piece also felt right for them. The subtle lighting on the fruit and pitcher created a sense of calm and serenity and also a sense of timelessness.” Please read her impressive bio on page 8. THE WARREN-WATCHUNG CONNECTION PAGE 8 JUNE/JULY/AUGUST 2022 theconnectionsnj.com Oil painting is Sandy’s medium of choice, but she also enjoys using other painting mediums, such as colored pencils and pastels. While creating fine art is her focus at this time, she actually began her career in commercial art. After attending art school in New York City, Sandy worked as a graphic designer for children’s books. She loved the design aspect but was determined to make time to create her own original art. When she began oil painting she knew she had found her medium. It was a great way to create animal portraits and she began accepting commissions. She still paints pet portraits and many of them are in private art collections around the US. Landscapes and still lifes are also subject matter she enjoys working on. Sandy has exhibited her work in the New Jersey area and you can see more of her paintings on Instagram @sandyruda. She teaches oil painting classes and workshops at the Visual Arts Center of New Jersey in Summit, as well as colored pencil and pastel classes/workshops. All levels are welcome. THE WARREN-WATCHUNG CONNECTION PAGE 10 JUNE/JULY/AUGUST 2022 theconnectionsnj.com Estate planning is not something you should do once and then disregard. It is important that your estate plans are updated frequently. When something happens unexpectedly in your life you may not be able to take the time to plan. Let me give you an example: I had a client in her 40s who recently went in for a routine mammogram. The doctor told her she had to come back for additional testing because something looked suspicious. The attending physician recommended an MRI. The MRI found anomalies requiring additional studies. The studies revealed she in fact had stage two breast cancer. The doctor spoke in technical terms expecting her to understand what the significance of the finding was. She was in shock and did not understand the significance of the findings and was left to research its implications on her own! This did little to right her world which had been turned completely upside down in an instant. I think of this when I meet clients and explain Estate Planning. I always want to ensure that I am explaining the estate plan clearly and in terms that the client understands and how it will impact their lives. This time she was lucky and made a full recovery. It makes you think. When something happens, usually bad, it happens in an instant. Estate planning should be simple to understand. I often use the term KISS. In Estate Planning K.I.S.S. stands for Keep it Simple and Secured. Make sure your estate plan is secured for your family. If something unexpected should happen your family is prepared and taken care of. My own father passed away from a heart attack back in the 90s. He was suddenly gone in an instant and because he did not update his estate plan, my family was left struggling to go on and pick up the pieces. It is common in a household for one spouse to pay the bills and manage the financial and estate affairs. Did you ever ask yourself how will my spouse manage when I pass away or become incapacitated? Does he or she know what to do? Here are some indicators that your estate plan may need critical updating: Getting older and your children have moved out of the house and/or are no longer minors. Death of a child, parent, or executor. Buying and selling new assets. Marriage or divorce. Starting or selling a business. Your beneficiary (child or other heirs) is getting a divorce or is getting married. It is important you are prepared for the surprises in life and stop procrastinating. At the law firm of Gail L. Abrams in Watchung, NJ we offer solutions to preserve your assets for your family while avoiding unnecessary taxation and headaches. We take the time to ensure you are comfortable and understand your estate planning choices. Don’t wait until something happens in an instant. Make informed decisions regarding your estate and financial affairs. The Law Offices of Gail L. Abrams offers Estate and Financial Planning including Living Trusts, Wills, Powers of Attorney, IRA Strategies, and Retirement Planning. Plan now before it is too late! Call the Law Office of Gail L. THE WARREN-WATCHUNG CONNECTION PAGE 14 JUNE/JULY/AUGUST 2022 theconnectionsnj.com Pets provide unconditional love and companionship so when they require medical care it can be very stressful. It is always heartbreaking when medical treatment options are limited by finances, but it is understandable as care becomes more involved. It is not uncommon to be faced with an estimate of several thousand dollars or more for a very sick or injured pet. Not having a plan in place ahead of time for how to pay for such a situation causes undue stress and can critically delay treatment which can literally cost a life. I used to encourage clients to have a separate savings account set aside for their pet’s medical expenses, particularly in the early days of pet insurance when the system was complicated and payouts were often unfairly low. While this is still never a bad idea, pet insurance plans have evolved to give more predictable and fair payouts and to have much broader coverage options for pet owners to choose from. Like all insurance, pet insurance is an extra expense that when all is well can seem unnecessary. That is, until the unexpected happens. An important aspect of pet insurance that should be mentioned is that it is rarely accepted directly by veterinarians. The advantage of this is that there is total freedom in where you seek veterinary care. This does require pet parents to pay for services when rendered and to make their own claims for reimbursement, but it also keeps the cost of veterinary health care down. If veterinarians had to employ office staff members to process insurance claims the price of veterinary care would surely increase. In selecting a pet insurance plan, first focus on finding the best possible coverage for accidents, illness, and injury. Routine, preventative care is the aspect of care for which one can budget, but planning for the unexpected is when insurance matters most. If you and your pet are lucky, you won’t need insurance for broken bones, toxin ingestion, or the like, but as your pet ages, they may develop a chronic condition such as arthritis, diabetes, or cancer. In addition, no insurance company will cover a pre-existing condition, so getting insurance early in life when your pet is healthy or as soon as you adopt an older pet, will help you to maximize the benefits. Pet insurance plans that pay out a percentage of a vet bill are best since they eliminate the guesswork of predicting reimbursement in contrast to a nebulous diagnosis-based payout system. Seek a percentage-based plan with the highest reimbursement percentage and the highest policy maximum then settle on a reasonable deductible you can afford. Focus first on coverage for accidents, illness, and injury and add preventative care coverage only if it doesn’t make the monthly premium unreasonable. Otherwise, plan to budget for preventative care. In addition, choosing a company with easy and fast claim filing and processing is a must. Ask questions about this when selecting an insurance carrier. No one wants to spend hours making a claim, have to request medical records from the vet every time, or wait forever for reimbursement. Thankfully now that online platforms and smartphone apps are standard, in many instances making a claim has become as easy as snapping a picture of a veterinary bill and submitting it right from your smartphone with reimbursement automatically deposited into your bank account in some instances within a matter of days. Pet insurance programs like these are definitely a solid investment in your pet’s future. THE PRICE OF QUALITY VETERINARY CARE: IS PET INSURANCE WORTH IT? Pet insurance plans have evolved to give more predictable and fair payouts and to have much broader coverage options for pet owners to choose from. Pet insurance plans that pay out a percentage of a vet bill are best since they eliminate the guesswork of predicting reimbursement in contrast to a nebulous diagnosis-based payout system. Chef Joe Murphy has decided to give our towns the opportunity to be recipients of his many talents as a world-renowned chef for over 25 years right here in New Providence. Chef Joe Murphy is a Brooklyn native and a lifelong New York City chef who has been through many of the great kitchens in the city, including LaCote Basque, Lespinasse, Park Avenue Café, GothamBar andGrill, Jean-Georges, and has traveled the world with Dean and Deluca as a global pastry chef. While working for Jean-Georges Restaurant he received 3 Michelin stars and 4 stars in the New York Times. In 2006 Chef Murphy was awarded Top Ten pastry chefs in America and won the Chopped Sweets Contest on the Food Network. A graduate of the Culinary Institute of America with a degree in baking and pastry, Joe honed his professional skills gaining experiences needed to further his cooking and baking techniques. After traveling the world with many fine restaurants, Joe has been planning this new venture for over two years. At a time when the pastry/ bakery business has been struggling, Chef Joe Murphy saw a need in our local community that was not being met. The concept is a local American bakery offering only fresh ingredients every day. Bakehouse by Joe Murphy will feature sandwiches, seasonal soups, quiche, pastries, and more all with a healthy twist using products from local N.J farmers. Items such as vegetables, herbs, apples, honey, and more are brought in on a daily basis. Vegan options will be available in addition to specialty coffees from New York. Chef Murphy is excited to be presenting an “American bakery” which promises to be something our area has been missing for a long time. Examples of flavorful menu items are whole wheat croissants with toasted baked grains, the best brownies onehas ever experienced, and strawberry shortcakes with “real” whipped cream. Vegan options such as a Vegan chocolate donut, warm butternut squash, and goat cheese tartine. Steel-cut oatmeal and avocado toast with sesame and feta topped with olive tapenade on fresh-baked ciabatta bread made by Joe makes this dish a real favorite! Joe’s goal as always is to make foods as delicious as possible using actual fresh ingredients. He believes, “in maintaining a balance of elements in whatever you are making using naturally sweetened foods”. This concept will serve to reduce the number of sugars in the food. Birthday, wedding cakes, and other specialty items will be available to order. Bakehouse by Joe Murphy will welcome local students as well as professionally trained chefs as employees. A sous chef with over 12 years of experience as well as a former head pastry chef will be on board to assist Joe with training personnel. Joe has helped raise money for various organizations such as Autism Speaks, The Wounded Warriors Foundation, City Meals, and The James Beard Foundation. He was awarded The Lifetime Achievement Award by the U.S. Pastry Competition recognized for being a Mentor, Educator, and Promoter in the pastry field. Joe lives in Scotch Plains with his supportive wife and two children. theconnectionsnj.com EAT, DRINK & CELEBRATE PAGE 23 Now that the pandemic restrictions are mostly lifted, in the world of social dancing, things have been moving forward at a great speed. Because of so many canceled travel plans, weddings, cruises, and celebrations of all kinds, people seem to be feverishly pursuing all that they have taken for granted. If these two years have taught us anything it is that life is precious and must not be wasted. “At the Arthur Murray Dance Centers of Central NJ, serving the three locations of Green Brook, Highland Park, andManalapan, we have seen a great influx of folks returning to social gatherings – many of which involve dancing!” says Michelle Garced, Co-Director of the schools. “In addition to teaching couples looking to learn their first dance for their big wedding day, we have many couples that want to learn how to dance who are parents of the bride or groom or even the wedding party itself” she added. Garced also tells of how many Golden Agers have waited to learn for many years and now feel it is time for them to check “learning to dance” off their bucket list. Many of our students decide to make dancing their new hobby and some even perform or go on to dance at a competitive level!” She and her husband and partner Emilio have been teaching for over 45 years. In fact, their Highland Park location is celebrating its 40th year of business. The Manalapan location is hitting its stride in its 5th year and the Green Brook location, approaching 25 years in business, has just moved. The new location, literally across the highway, is now in the Westbound direction on Route 22 in the Green Brook Plaza. “The benefits of learning to dance are numerous.” Garced continued. “Some of the main rewards to be had are weight loss, increased flexibility and overall fitness, overcoming shyness, improved self-confidence, as well as improved posture and balance. We have so many wonderful students who report that their friends and relatives have told them how much more youthful they appear! Besides the health and physical benefits, dancing helps to turn back the clock by way of released endorphins and positivity resulting from that fantastic sense of accomplishment, the mental stimulation from having to learn something new and especially the feeling of being part of a wonderful community!” The Arthur Murray Franchised Dance Centers is a world-wide company now in its 110th year. All of the staff are award-winning, internationally certified professionals. Their famous “Three Point System” of teaching has held up as a tried and true method guaranteeing success to every level of students’ ability. Garced happily brags about some of their youngest stars as well as some who are well into their 80’s and 90’s! You can come with or without a partner. The inn is open year-round, 7 days a week and sits high above the Delaware River, a few miles from the popular tourist destinations of New Hope, PA and Lambertville, NJ. Guest room accommodations offer comfort and luxury: gas fireplaces, whirlpool tubs, outdoor and indoor seating. Breakfast is a treat - gourmet quality, and freshly made each morning, served in the dining room, on the veranda, or delivered graciously to your guest room. Start with freshly baked muffins or scones, followed by fresh fruit or homemade granola. Main entrees could be Gran-Marnier French toast, eggs Florentine, garden-vegetable omelets, or fresh berry pancakes. All are served with specialty bacon or sausage and garnished beautifully. By design, there are no televisions in the guest rooms, but this leaves time for conversation, reading, music, board games, and a stop at the pasture fence to feed the adorable sheep. There are many activities and sites to see in the area, from biking, hiking, walks in the charming, country towns, specialty shopping, wineries, museums, art galleries and more. Dining options range from fine cuisine to casual pubs, with river views, lively in-town bars, unique restaurants, farm to table, and amazing menu selections. People come to Woolverton Inn from near and far, for various reasons, but everyone hopes to relax and get away from their busy lives. Woolverton is an ideal place for couples, friends, and family to spend quality time together, reconnect, or celebrate a special occasion. The idyllic setting of the inn is also perfect for a marriage proposal or honeymoon. (Staff will gladly helpmake your stay romantic, with fresh red roses, sumptuous chocolate truffles, and champagne ready on arrival.) Expecting parents can plan a timely “baby-moon” to rest up before the big day. In-room massages are available to help you relax and feel pampered. Woolverton Inn is a full service “destination” wedding venue, hosting elopements, micro-weddings, and spectacular large affairs for up to 200 guests that blend a casual country feel with elegance and grace. Local companies might send their leadership teams for creative planning sessions, training workshops, off-site meetings, and team building. PAGE 31 KIDZ CONNECTION theconnectionsnj.com By Jill Stolz THE CANADIAN ROCKIES: BANFF & LAKE LOUISE If you are looking for an outdoor vacation spot for this summer, consider a trip to the Canadian Rockies, a picture-perfect postcard of breathtaking scenery, cool mountain air and unlimited outdoor activities. Located where Alberta and British Columbia meet at the Continental Divide, Banff is an hour and a half drive from Calgary, the capital of Alberta and home to the famous Calgary Stampede. A popular skiing destination in the winter, especially heli-skiing, I heartily recommend coming in July or August when the snow is just melting and the coldmornings turn sunny and warmby the afternoon. It stays light until after 10 p.m. in the summer, allowing for more leisurely activities as the days stretch out before you. Banff is a bustling ski town, much like Park City, with a downtown consisting of eclectic cafes and restaurants, shops, boutiques and sporting goods stores. The town is anchored by the baronial Fairmont Banff Springs hotel, which was modeled after a Scottish castle. It is a complete resort, offering world-class golf, tennis, horseback riding, bicycle rentals, and even a bowling alley. There are a number of restaurant options as well as boutiques, but a 15-minute walk into town gives you much broader and less expensive options. There is plenty to do in Banff itself, including all levels of hiking, mountain and road biking, rafting on the bright green Bow River that flows throughout the National Park, and gondola rides to the top of Sulpher Mountain where the snow-capped peaks are everywhere you turn, and so much more. Wildlife can be seen here, as well as in other locations in the park. We found ourselves just feet away from a large elk on the path behind our hotel on the first day. Other wildlife we saw on our trip includes marmot, bighorn sheep, moose, hummingbirds, a black bear and a grizzly bear family. However, to really capture the immense beauty of this area, you must spend some time in the Lake Louise area. It’s a 45-minute scenic drive from Banff, or you can stay in the majestic Fairmont Chateau Lake Louise which, you guessed it, was modeled after a French chateau. Arriving at Lake Louise is like jumping into a postcard. The clear, blue, glacial lake is surrounded by snow-capped mountains, offering jaw-dropping views, which can be seen from the easiest walks around the lake to the most difficult hikes up to the top of the peaks. One of my favorite hikes was the Plain of the Six Glaciers hike, a two-hour climb rewarded not just by the view of six glaciers and the back of Lake Louise, but with a homemade lunch at the historic tea house perched at the top of the trail, run by generations of a family that opened it in 1924. Canoeing on the lake is also a popular, and very Canadian, activity. We drove about 20 minutes to take out a canoe on Lake Moraine, which was a deep turquoise color and less populated than Lake Louise. Popular activities in this area include white water rafting on the Kicking Horse River, with rapids ranging from class III to VI, horseback riding, kayaking and canoeing, glacier skiing for those who dare (and are in shape to climb up and ski down), multi-day hiking, and helicopter sightseeing. We arranged a heli-hiking expedition for an entire day, led by a certified heli-hiking guide. A helicopter flew us to the top of a mountain, which felt like landing on another planet. Over the course of a few hours, we made our way across the mountain and down towards a small lake surrounded by shrubbery and wildflowers. We stopped for a delicious, homemade lunch and took time to enjoy the magnificent views and breathe the cool, fresh air. Our helicopter was waiting for us and swooped us up, giving us a tour of the area from above before landing. Had we stayed more than a week, we would have traveled further into British Columbia to Jasper National Park, filled with more pristine glacial lakes, mountains and waterfalls to explore. Still, in one week, we managed to fit in a variety of activities, take a multitude of pictures and just relax and take in one of the most beautiful areas I have ever seen. Whether you come for rigorous hiking, outdoor adventures, excellent golfing or just a beautiful place to unwind, the Canadian Rockies have it all. ADVENTURES FAMILY 3 +

I am pleased to continue this column, dedicating it to the memory of Robin Fand, the founder of The Connection Magazines. I am not a Wordle player, but my wife caught the bug. First, it was the original Wordle, where you have up to six attempts to guess the daily five-letter word. With each guess, non-used letters are displayed in gray. If a letter is contained in the word, it is shaded green or yellow. If the letter is in the correct position, it is shown in green, in the wrong position, yellow. As you would expect other games have emerged, like Wordle2, with six letters, which you can play twice a day, and Quordle, a similar game with four words and nine guesses. No doubt, Robin would have enjoyed the emergence of all these puzzles. In fact, ‘robin’ was the Wordle word one day in February, earlier this year. My wife showed me the outpouring of social media postings for Robin on the day ‘robin’ was the 5-letter Wordle of the day. Robin’s sister, Lori, sent a Wordle link to Robin’s husband, Ben, and suggested he play. He did so for the first time on the day ‘robin’ was the word. Ben reported to me that he felt Robin smiling down as he solved her name. Here is how I would have liked to have seen the Wordle solved for Robin and robin. Perhaps one of the millions of people that play the game did it this way. WORDLE MANIA By Dan Rosenberg In fact, ‘robin’ was the Wordle word one day in February, earlier this year. Lose up to 20-40 lbs. in 40 days LOSE THE FAT AND KEEP IT OFF! Did you know that your largest organ is actually your skin? What are you doing to take care of it? O.N. Esthetics Salon & Day Spa can help you in this area as they specialize in full-body skincare and have many other personalized services in their new mini salon that just opened in March of 2022. The salon was started and operated by Olga and Olessia (a mother and daughter team). The business began in New York and then made its way to New Jersey, cultivating a diverse “New York” feel and experience. The team has 13 years of industry experience to offer their customers. It was definitely a lifelong dream for Olessia’s mother (the manager) to open her own salon. Olessia thought her own interest in learning new things and her good makeup skills would be a perfect combination for opening up their own business. She said they wanted to be able to make their own rules and use their creativity to do things the way that they want to. The mini salon with a modern and friendly feel features services for skincare such as signature facials, deep cleaning, and anti-aging. For body, they specialize in waxing, ultrasonic body treatments, and aromatherapy; there are many add-ons available for personalization and special needs. In addition to skincare, they provide a nice choice of services for hair and nail care with a variety of menu options to choose from. All services are listed on their website at www.onesthetic.com. The salon is focused on treating customers with a more personal, individualized approach and makes it a point to be totally inclusive and market their salon to everyone, including men (so it is considered a unisex salon). If you are loyal to brand names, it may be helpful to know that some of the brand names that the salon uses are Bioelement and Dermalogica for skincare and Redken and Chi for hair care among others. A popular service that tends to bring people into this salon is facials according to the owner. The salon has goals for the future and hopes to expand as they become busier. They want to hire some new employees and focus on retail and skincare. Although they noted it is a learning process since they’re fairly new, they are willing to open up more locations down the line. They want their customers to have long-term beauty goals as well and would love to help you get that process going. The next time you are in Watchung and need some rejuvenation whether it be skin, skin products, or maintaining hair and nails, look to O.N. Esthetics Salon & Day Spa to assist.
