Editorials... As we embark on summer and the school year comes to a close with graduation season approaching, we are thrilled to bring you a special June issue of the Warren-Watchung Connection. This issue will honor the achievements of the talented students in our community. We have chosen stunning artwork created by students from our very own local school district on the cover. Their artwork serves as a visual representation of the creativity and potential that exists within our local young adults. In addition to highlighting these remarkable students, we want to make your graduation celebrations even more memorable. We have curated a selection of local restaurants that are perfect for hosting graduation dinners, parties and other celebratory gatherings. The businesses in our community are the heart and soul of our neighborhoods, o ering unique products, services and experiences that you won’t find anywhere else. We encourage you to support these local gems and discover the hidden treasures they have to o er. In keeping with student achievement and graduation as this issue’s theme, we have chosen student- writer Maxwell Silver’s article as our Teen Voice column. It is apropos for the June issue as he discusses the highs and lows of transitioning from middle school to high school. All rising freshmen will benefit from and relate to his reflections and anticipations. Gentlemen, your “Summer Style Scoop” is here! David Marzano, manager of Adams Fine Clothing & Tuxedo writes about the must-have basics for summer in our Fashion Flash column. Find out the top trends this season for shorts, polos, sports coats and trousers! This issue’s cover was painted by Maddie Archbold, a senior at Watchung Hills Regional High School. Looking at this lovely house makes me want to move right in! Maddie was inspired to paint this piece from a trip to New Orleans. She says, “Walking around the streets of uptown, I was able to admire a lot of the Greek revival and Italianate style architecture.” The southern live oak trees lining the streets there were her motivation for including greenery in her painting-titled, White Italianate House. When you visit any of our featured businesses, please let them know that you discovered them through our magazine. By doing so, you not only support these local establishments, but also help us continue to spread the word about their exceptional products and services. Trust us to be your go-to resource for all things local and small business-related. Please join us in celebrating the beginning of summer and the remarkable local businesses that make our neighborhood shine. Wishing you a summer filled with warmth, joy and countless memories. Shapiro Financial Group is not a registered broker/dealer and is independent of Raymond James Financial Services. Asubstantial portion of today’s and future wealth is in individual retirement accounts, commonly referred to as IRAs. IRA accounts have grown, via annual contributions, rollovers from qualified plans, and compounding of investment returns. IRA accounts are titled in the name of an individual or as a beneficiary IRA. These accounts are never titled in joint ownership. IRA owners should pay particular attention to the beneficiary form attributable to the account. The beneficiary form will determine how the assets of the account are distributed, in the event of the account holder’s death. Although IRA assets are included in a decedent’s estate, IRA accounts are not administered by will or trust but rather by the beneficiary form. It is important to review your beneficiary form for life events and best to name both primary and contingent beneficiaries. There are 2 primary types of IRAs-traditional (deductible), which is funded pretax, and Roth, which is funded post-tax. In simple terms, an individual who contributes to a Traditional IRA receives a current tax deduction for annual contributions and the amounts grow tax-deferred. Distributions are taxable when taken. In contrast, Roth IRA contributions do not provide a current tax deduction, are viewed as utilizing after-tax dollars, and grow tax-deferred. However, Qualified Roth distributions are not subject to income tax. IRS rules for Qualified Roth distributions include distribution after 5 years and attainment of age 59 1/2. Hence Roth IRAs are characterized as tax-free growth. For 2024, annual IRA contribution limits are $7000 plus an additional $1000 for those 50 and older. If covered by an employer-sponsored plan such as a 401(K), you will be subject to limitations on annual IRA contributions. However, annual contribution limits to employer-sponsored plans are greater. Most 401(K) plans provide an employee option to contribute pre- or post-tax dollars. For 2024, employee contribution limits are $23,000 plus an additional $7,000 for those 50 and older. The selection of Traditional IRA versus Roth IRA, or pre-tax vs. post-tax, is a complex calculation. Further eligible individuals have a taxable option to convert traditional IRA assets to Roth IRA assets. At Shapiro Shapiro Financial Group we share a unique ability to carefully evaluate these choices for our clients. In part, we will consider participants’ needs, current and projected tax rates, asset allocation, age, net worth, and beneficiary. A well-constructed retirement plan potentially includes 2 buckets of retirement income, both taxable and nontaxable. Traditional IRAs are subject to Required Minimum Distributions (RMD). Beginning in 2023, the SECURE 2.0 Act raised the age at which you must begin taking RMDs to age 73. If you have already started taking RMDs, you will continue. Traditional beneficiary IRAs have separate distribution rules. RMDs are calculated using IRS tables which increase with age and are applied to prior year-ending balances. Traditional IRA distributions are taxable and should be well-planned. If you are philanthropic, you can donate your RMD up to $100,000 to charity, effectively reducing your taxes by lower adjusted gross income. We carefully calculate and monitor RMD administration for our clients. Traditional and Roth IRAs have grown to represent a sizable portion of investors’ wealth and retirement income. At Shapiro Shapiro Financial Group, we utilize 80 years of experience and the depth of Raymond James resources to construct personalized strategies for the current investor and generations to come. As a boutique firm, we provide personalized service to our clients. We believe that efficient tax management can add meaningful longterm returns. If you can benefit from professional investment management along with advanced financial planning, I invite you to contact me directly. I welcome the opportunity to help you and your family prosper. Morgan Sena Makeup Artistry. Professional makeup artist Morgan Sena provides personalized makeup applications and tutorials to clients looking to enhance their look, try something new, or pull off a stunning edgy look. She also does costume special effects. Morgan first became interested in makeup artistry while training as a dancer in middle and high school. Dancers often wear stage makeup to help their facial features stand out while performing and competing. Morgan loved this aspect of dance performance. She started playing with makeup more and more and began doing makeup as a freelance artist. Her focus was helping girls do their makeup for formal events like proms so they could look and feel their best. After high school, Morgan received a degree in sociology from Fordham University in New York, but her heart led her in a different direction professionally. “I felt called to do makeup artistry,” she says. So, Morgan started a new course of study after college: the Master Make-up Artistry Program at Makeup Designory in New York City. This six-month program helped Morgan refine her skills in all aspects of makeup artistry, including bridal, special effects, film, television, and fashion. She also learned to create the perfect looks for professional photoshoots and headshots. One unique aspect of her training was working in a laboratory to create small and large prosthetics for special looks, which comes in handy when clients want unique looks such as wounds, scars, and special features for Halloween or cosplay. “The program solidified my desire to become a makeup artist,” says Morgan. Since her training ended, Morgan has been working with clients to achieve their desired look for weddings, proms, special events, photoshoots, and more. She can also accommodate groups such as bridal parties and travel to clients throughout the tri-state area. Morgan recommends new clients schedule an in-person consultation before their big day so she understands the look they’re going for and where clients will be photographed (such as indoors or outside in natural lighting). “I want to understand all their preferences such as what kind of foundation they like or how toned down or dramatic they want their eye makeup to be,” she explains. “We do a trial look and take our time walking step-by-step through each area so I achieve their desired look.” Morgan is careful to load her kit with makeup that works for people with allergies and sensitivities, and she uses special setting products to ensure the makeup applications last throughout an event. Bookings at least 60 days before an event are recommended. Morgan also loves working on tutorials for clients looking for tips and tricks for their beauty regimen. She can offer both product recommendations and application advice. “It’s fun to help people. I enjoy assessing their skin type and making skincare and makeup recommendations. It builds a connection between the client and me.” To learn more about Morgan Sena Morgan Sena Makeup Artistry and see Morgan’s portfolio of beauty, fashion, and character makeup applications, visit MorganSenaMUA.com. SHOPPING, BEAUTY & EVENTS PAGE 25 theconnectionsnj.com NEED HELP? WE'LL DRESS YOU. Dress up or dress down. That's your business. Dressing you well, that's our business. Adams Fine Clothing & Tuxedo 1275 Springfield Ave. New Providence, NJ 07974 908-665-0800 www.adamsfineclothing.com Allow us to make the difference! We offer both In-Stock and Custom Made Suits, Shirts and Jeans for Men. After a dreary April, it’s safe to say the summer sunshine is finally here. One of my favorite things about the summertime is seeing guys throw some color and personality into their looks. But with great style power comes great style responsibility. Most of the time guys wind up overdoing it, looking like a waiter at Margaritaville and not a stylish man ready for summer. So let’s break down the dos and don’ts of summer style so you can start relaxing and stop being mistaken for a tropical waiter…. Shorts: Anything but Basic Every August we select next year’s seasonal merchandise. And for 2024 we didn’t buy a single pair of khaki shorts. Why? Because every guy already has them, and let’s not beat around the bush-they’re just your work pants cut in half. Shorts are a casual clothing item and casual situations are the perfect time to make a playful statement. By keeping the rest of your outfit simple and then pairing it with a pastel pink, lilac, or sky blue short, you have a killer summer outfit that doesn’t veer off course to “Overkillville.” Polos: Playing with Patterns The polo shirt is the king of summer shirts. Wear it with your swimsuits or wear it with your actual suits! There’s nothing they can’t do. While solid polos are always a no-brainer, don’t be FASHIONFLASH Summer Style Scoop By David Marzano Manager, Adams Fine Clothing and Tuxedos afraid to throw on a printed polo with a summer theme. Nothing gets you in the summer mindset like surrounding yourself with palm trees, daiquiris, and tropical birds, both on your polo and all around! Sport Coats: Easy, Breezy Beautiful This is the fourth article in my style series and every time I have the same thing to say about sport coats. Soft. Unconstructed. Comfortable. By wearing a soft, lightly canvased, half-lined sport jacket this summer you’ll look cool and confident instead of sweaty and uncomfortable. Our favorite colors this season are medium blue, lilac, and berry red. Trousers: Trying Something New Khaki and grey trousers are great colors-don’t get me wrong. I’m in them at least once a week. But summer is the time to embrace color and donning a tastefully colored pair of pants is one of the best ways. A sky blue or cream trouser would complement your navy blazer and have you looking like you just got off your yacht. On the casual spectrum, try a dusty pair of jeans in a pale orange or lilac. Just make sure you get them hemmed to show off your socks (or lack thereof). For more information, please stop into our store and see for yourself how good you can look. THE WARREN-WATCHUNG CONNECTION PAGE 28 JUNE/JULY/AUGUST 2024 theconnectionsnj.com 908-756-0017 www.HigginsFuneralHome.com 752 Mountain Boulevard Watchung, NJ 07069 Stephen Szczubelek, Mgr. NJ Lic. No. #4446 Mark your calendars! This summer isjam-packed with great opportunities to expose your family and friends to the arts - for free! Whether it is comedy, musicals, or dancing and live music under the stars- it is right in your backyard and a wonderful way to enjoy a summer evening outdoors with family and friends. “Without our traditions, our lives would be as shaky as a fiddler on the roof!” So says the beloved family musical, Fiddler on the Roof Fiddler on the Roof. One tradition that is going strong is the Plays Plays in the Park at the amphitheater in Pleasant Valley Park in Basking Ridge. In its 37th year, this long-standing tradition of presenting open-air theater free of charge is continuing with Trilogy Repertory Company’s productions, Fiddler on the Roof Fiddler on the Roof and Shakespeare in Shakespeare in Hollywood. The series is funded by donations, Bernards Township Parks and Recreation, and a grant from the Somerset County Cultural and Heritage Commission. Fiddler on the Roof will be performed on July 11, 12, 13, 18, 19, and 20. This classic musical is sure to enthrall people of all ages with its endearing story set in a Jewish village in pre-revolutionary Russia. A poor milkman, determined to find good husbands for his five daughters, consults the traditional village matchmaker. His daughters have their own ideas on the subject. Its messages about struggle and tradition versus change are still relevant today. What will really captivate the audience, though, is the music. Songs like “Matchmaker, Matchmaker,” “If I Were a Rich Man” and “Do You Love Me?” will have you smiling, tapping your feet, and humming the tune for days afterward. No one does it better than the award-winning Trilogy Repertory, with its talented cast, live orchestra, and the direction of Jaye Barre. On July 26, 27, and August 1, 2, and 3, the fun will continue with Ken Ludwig’s Shakespeare in Hollywood. Produced by Peter Curley, this hilarious farce is a tale that finds two characters from Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream, Oberon, king of the fairies, and Puck, his right-hand man, lost in time on their way back to the Arden forest. They find themselves smack-dab in the middle of a Hollywood set in the 1930s. As Puck would say, “Lord what fools these mortals be!” as chaos ensues including mistaken identities, mismatched couples, romances gone awry, and a dizzying swirl of characters running amok - all making for laugh-out-loud fun for the whole family. These shows are presented on an outdoor stage in Pleasant Valley Park. They begin at 8 pm. Seating is on a first-come, first-served basis, on a sloping lawn in front of the stage. Bring lawn chairs and blankets, snacks, and bug spray (this is New Jersey in the summer after all!). Although the park is well-lit, it is helpful to have a flashlight for when you are exiting, and, if you have little ones, glow necklaces help to make them easy to spot!! How about live music? If you love live music, you do not have to pay a fortune for tickets at PNC or MetLife. Check your town’s Parks and Recreation website. Most towns sponsor live music from really talented cover bands. If your town does not, chances are that one of your neighboring towns does. These open-air concerts are a great date night, get-together with friends, or a place to let the kids run around, dance, and burn off some energy before dropping into bed! Like the Plays in the Plays in the Park, you should come early with your own chair or blanket and bring your own refreshments. Although there might be an ice cream truck stopping by, there are not likely to be any other vendors. Check with the sponsoring Parks Department for details. So scope out dreamy, midsummer entertainment offered by our local towns. Young or old, single, part of a couple or a family, you should get out there this summer and enjoy our area’s tradition of free outdoor theater and music! Free Shop at Home Service Day or Evening One of the components of home design and renovations that I’m asked about most is tile. Which material is best? How should we finish the edges? What size should we use? What’s new and trending? Tile was originally ceramic. It was made by hand of clay, talc, sand, and sometimes natural fibers, but it scratched and fractured easily and absorbed moisture. Natural stone tile is inherently beautiful, but it has to be sealed and is hard to clean and maintain. Porcelain tile is made of clay, sand, and feldspar. It is processed under high pressure and high temperature which produces a consistent and durable product. Porcelain tile resists scratching, water absorption, and cold temperatures. It can be manufactured in a huge variety of colors, textures, and sizes. For these r e a s ons , porcelain is the best option for the majority of homeowners. Trending today in both wall and floor tilemarketsaresuper-sized tiles that are 24” x 48” and 48” x 48”. These larger tiles create a fabulous look that’s a breeze to maintain with fewer grout lines than a standard application. They are available in stone, concrete, and ribbed wood looks that produce an incredible spa feel in contemporary bathrooms. Linear drains in showers are also trending. These drains can use larger floor tiles and, unlike a traditional center drain, allow the shower floor to be pitched in just one direction. A shower floor with a traditional center drain requires the floor to pitch to the drain in four directions for proper drainage. This requires a very small mosaic or 2” floor tile for flexibility. If considering a linear drain, consider that specialized saws are needed to cut oversized tiles. If you love this option, be sure to discuss this with your installer before ordering. Many tile contractors don’t have the capability of cutting them. Another top trend according to Christine Kohl, the owner of The Tile Lady in Berkeley Heights, is modular patterns in floor tile. To create this look, you purchase one tile design in a variety of sizes (for example 16” x 24”, 16” x 16”, 8” x 16”, 8” x 8”) and allow designers to create multiple patterns, adding interest and originality to floors. Hexagonal tiles continue to be wildly popular, too. Always timeless and classic is the look of Carrara~that familiar creamy white marble with gray or beige veining. Available as natural stone, Carrara can be expensive to install and requires sealing every year or two. There are, however, many excellent, realistic-looking options on the market in porcelain, which mimic real stone but are less costly, and easier to maintain and install. A new trend that’s moving east from the west coast is Terrazzo~both with natural stone and in porcelain alternatives. Terrazzo originated in 16th century Italy to repurpose the marble chips left from sculpting and building and consists of a composite material inlaid with varying sizes, shapes, and colors of marble. Wall tiles were traditionally sold with matching bullnose pieces to finish off the edges of the application. Schluter strips are a stylish, clean, and affordable alternative. They are simple metal edge brackets that are available in rounded, square, or flat profiles and in a wide array of finishes. Al though not for every application, S c h l u t e r strips save installation time and eliminate the need for bullnose or finish tiles. Finally, remember that tile should always be installed by a professional installer who has the proper tools and expertise for your project. With a professional, you’ll have a safer, faster, higher quality installation as well as peace of mind. Ready to talk tile? I’d love to talk with you!
