My origin story involves crossing an ocean, and I’ve since leveled up to corporate programmer by day, household referee by night, and travel-obsessed artist in whatever moments are left. My three boys are my greatest masterpiece-a chaotic, energetic triptych that spends most of its time on a hockey rink. They keep me busy, proud, and caffeinated. Travel is my creative fuel, and painting is my therapy. After decades of dabbling, I’ve gone from “occasional hobbyist” to “woman on a mission” in the last three years—my brushes are now as busy as my schedule. I work in acrylics and oils, turning everything I love—landscapes, flowers, the sea, my chaos—into colorful evidence on canvas. I’ve even braved a few art expos (without hiding behind a potted plant!), and it’s been a joy to share my work and meet fellow art lovers. Each painting is a little piece of my world. I hope it makes you smile, pause, or see something beautiful on your own every day. We are especially excited to be a sponsor of the very first Warren Restaurant Week! Be sure to pick up a Restaurant Passport Book from the Warren Township Library, visit participating restaurants, get it stamped, and enter for a chance to win prizes. Our Wine & Dine Directory highlights dining destinations throughout the many communities we serve, encouraging readers to explore and support local restaurants all summer long. Summer is also the perfect time to refresh your home, complete projects, explore camps and tutoring programs, and discover new local services. Whether you are dining out, planning summer activities for your family, or looking for trusted local professionals, we hope this issue becomes your guide all summer long. Our cover art is an oil painting by Alla Levit, entitled Vanitas: Abundance Beneath the Light of Eternity. She was inspired by the Flemish old masters’ use of “luminous glazes, patient layering of light and quiet symbolism.” This piece draws you in with its soft, inviting colors and play of light on the fruits, leaves and wine glass. Alla points out, “what appears as a simple harvest becomes a meditation on grace, reminding us that all earthly richness exists beneath a higher truth.” America turns 250 this summer! To help you celebrate this milestone, our latest Family Adventures column features an extensive guide by Joanne Kleinle. The article includes a curated list of places to visit and ways to celebrate, all while incorporating fascinating historical context. We invite you to read the full column to start planning your commemorative trips and activities. Happy 250th, America! For endless ideas of summer activities, please read our Somerset Spotlight column. It was put together by the Somerset County Park Commission, and it is chockfull of ways to enjoy nature, stay active, and connect with your community. Be sure to take part in the diverse range of programs o ered through Labor Day. Discover the best spots for hiking, biking, and golfing, and start planning for various summer events and festivals. The column also features several parks available to rent for private parties or special occasions. Be sure to get out and enjoy all Somerset County has to o er! Most importantly, we encourage everyone to continue supporting local businesses. When visiting our featured advertisers, please let them know you discovered them through The Connection Magazine. #TellThemWeSentYou! THE WARREN-WATCHUNG CONNECTION PAGE 8 JUNE/JULY/AUGUST 2026 theconnectionsnj.com hen Knee Pain Lingers Longer Than It Should Many patients come to Performance Ortho with the same concern: their knee pain has not improved, even after weeks or months of rest, therapy, or injections. What starts as a minor issue can gradually become a daily limitation, affecting how you walk, exercise, and move through life. Chronic knee pain is rarely just about overuse or aging. In many cases, it is a sign that the underlying problem has not been properly addressed. Without the right approach, symptoms can continue to return, creating a frustrating cycle of temporary relief followed by recurring discomfort. Common Signs Your Knee Pain Is Not Resolving Persistent knee pain often presents in ways that interfere with normal activity. Patients commonly report: • Dull, achy pain even at rest • Increased discomfort during walking, climbing stairs, or exercise • Ongoing reliance on pain medication for relief Stiffness, weakness, and difficulty bearing weight are also common. Over time, these symptoms can worsen if the root cause is not treated effectively. Why Traditional Treatments Often Fall Short Conventional treatments like physical therapy and cortisone injections can play an important role early on for acute pain relief. However, they are often designed to manage symptoms rather than repair the underlying issue, which is frequently joint degeneration or chronic tendon damage. This is why many patients experience short-term improvement, only to have the pain return weeks later. At Performance Ortho, the focus is different. Care begins with a comprehensive evaluation to identify the true source of pain. From there, a personalized treatment plan is built to restore function and promote long-term healing. Focused Shockwave Therapy: A More Targeted Approach to Knee Pain Relief One of the most effective non-surgical solutions we offer is Focused Shockwave Therapy. This FDA-cleared treatment uses high-energy acoustic waves to stimulate the body’s natural healing response within the knee. By increasing blood flow and activating cellular repair processes, Shockwave Therapy helps address damaged tendons, ligaments, and joint structures at the source. It is particularly effective for patients whose pain has not improved with rest, therapy, or injections alone. Many patients notice meaningful improvements in pain, stability, and mobility early in the treatment process. When appropriate, Shockwave Therapy can also be combined with regenerative medicine options such as platelet-rich plasma or other biologic treatments to support longer-term outcomes. Dr. Mejia explains, “Persistent knee pain is often a sign that the body has stopped healing efficiently. Our goal is to restart that process in a targeted way so patients can recover function, not just manage symptoms.” Who Is a Good Candidate for Shockwave Therapy? Shockwave Therapy is often a strong option for patients who have been dealing with knee pain that has not responded to conservative care. It is especially beneficial for those looking to avoid surgery and return to activity safely. Patients experiencing chronic tendon irritation, early joint degeneration, or lingering pain after injury are often ideal candidates. A proper evaluation is essential to determine if this treatment is the right fit. Benefits of Shockwave Therapy • Covered by Medicare and most insurances • Precise and targeted treatment • Non-invasive with no downtime • Designed to reach deep tissue structures • No reliance on medications or injections Next Steps Performance Ortho specializes in non-surgical, evidence-based treatments designed to help patients move better and live without pain. If your knee pain is not improving, it may be time to explore a more advanced approach. We offer no-cost insurance verification and transparent pricing to make your care experience as simple as possible. Meet Your Expert: Dr. Joseph Mejia Dr. Mejia specializes in interventional pain management and non-surgical orthopedic care. His approach focuses on identifying the root cause of pain and delivering targeted treatments that restore mobility and improve quality of life. At Performance Ortho, he works alongside a multidisciplinary team to ensure patients receive comprehensive, personalized care. Shapiro CPAs’ caring and experienced team guides clients to a stress-free tax seahe first taxes date back to ancient civilizations, such as the Sumerians, who recorded taxes on clay tablets. Perhaps taxes are as old as writing itself. Today, the IRS processes over 160 million individual federal tax returns annually, and the vast majority (over 93%) are filed electronically. Why are taxes so hard to understand? In 1913, the US tax code was 400 pages; now it is estimated to be 70,000+ pages. Albert Einstein is credited with saying, “The hardest thing in the world to understand is income taxes.” Benjamin Franklin coined the famous term “In this world, nothing is certain, except death and taxes.” War and taxes have always been linked to each other. President Lincoln enacted the first US income tax in 1862 to fund the Civil War. Historically, income tax rates have been raised to pay for conflict. In searching the Shapiro CPA archives (pictured), I found this 1938 personal income tax Form 1040(A). This may have been the first year our firm prepared tax returns since it was founded in 1937. One page and color-coded. The tax rate was 4%, prewar and prior to large social programs. Contrast that to top tax rates of 90% to fund WWII, 70% in the 70’s, falling to a low of 28% under President Reagan and hovering between 30-40% since. Of course, there are all sorts of taxes, not just personal income tax. There’s Sales Tax, VAT, Property Tax (NJ viewed as highest in the country), Excise Tax, Gas Tax, Estate-Death Tax, Corporate Tax, Tolls and Tariffs. What’s next...Tax on Tax? Perfect for: Family Outings Group Beach Trips Festivals & Boardwalk Fun Never Lose a Step at the Beach Again DD o ig n . ’t JF ui nsdt. www.flipflopfinders.com chose to donate my last Bug and Bus, it wasn’t a casual decision. It was personalbecause the cause was personal. Personal because my mother, father and their parents were Holocaust survivors hoping to escape, survive and thrive via a new lease on life in the US. After immigrating to Cincinnati, Ohio, their hopes were to settle into a new land, build a family, enjoy and age in place in their own home. This all required more than hope; it required real support, care, coordination, and resources to Enter Jewish Family Service. JFS was there and remains there for my family and hundreds of families like mine. eeing my two Volkswagens, a convertible Bug and a Bus, shining in my garage and driveway was something I took great pride in. They had become things I no longer drove every day; they were things I preserved. Restored carefully over time, they represented patience, craftsmanship, and a deep appreciation for history. They were part of a collection I had poured years into and never imagined parting with. They were the last two in a line of collected VWs, going back to my grade school days when one of my favorite teachers introduced me to her red Beetle. Then, my Sephardic (Jews of Spanish heritage, in our case, Greece) father surprised us with a shiny new red Beetle, and my Ashkenazic (Eastern European Jewish, in our case, Germany) grandmother almost “had a cow!” Between that first Beetle to the last Bug and Bus I owned, there were four other VWs at one time in the collection. So, when I deal with life’s challenges. These challenges would have been overwhelming for any family. Enter Jewish Family Service (JFS). JFS was there and remains there for my family and hundreds of families like mine. They understand more than just aging; the team at JFS understands the unique needs of Holocaust survivors and other vulnerable individuals. They help people like my parents settle and remain in the home they fought so hard to build by providing care, stability, and peace of mind. When I looked for a meaningful way to give back, I kept coming back to my VWs. They weren’t just collectibles-they were pieces of history for me and articles of value that could be transformed into real impact. Through the JFS car donation program, those vintage vehicles were converted into funding that directly supports families like mine. The proceeds help provide home care, transportation, and essential services, making it possible for others to age in place with the same dignity my parents were given. I don’t see my VWs as something I lost, although there was a tear or two in my eye as I watched them being pulled away. I see the donation of my VWs as paying it forward. As someone who was raised by Holocaust Survivors who were helped by JFS, the opportunity to donate cars that originated during the time of Hitler’s Nazi Germany is truly a full circle. The funds received through this donation were used to provide support for people whose stories deserve to be honored. The process for donating couldn’t have been easier, with one phone call or click of a button, a seamless pick-up is scheduled. If you have a vehicle or property you are considering donating, call 877-JFS-4-CAR or visit jewishfamilysvc.org/donate--vehicle-donation.php. This tax-deductible donation will make a lasting impact. Jewish Family Service of Somerset, Hunterdon and Warren Counties is a nonprofit social service agency working to improve the overall quality of life for individuals and families of all faiths and backgrounds in our tri-county community. JFS supports older adults, promotes mental health, connects youth and families, and answers urgent community needs. McDonough, a truly extraordinary gentleman. This momentous occasion is made possible by the service, unwavering patriotism, and inconthose who have served, my profound gratitude for them transcends the limitations of mere words. What follows is a small glimpse into the life of an altruistic Renaissance man who inspired my John E. McDonough, a decoratedVietnam veteran, and Sergeant in the United StatesAir Force, chose to enlist even though he had earned a full football scholarship to Oklahoma State University, which would have exempted him from the draft. During his time “In Country,” he was stationed in three renowned hot zones: Saigon, NhaTrang, andAn Loc. To cope with the daily weight of war, John trained inTae Kwon Do in the evenings with the Korean ROCArmy, our allies, and achieved his black belt in just one year—an impressive accomplishment, given that it typically takes at least three. He consistently went above and beyond to support and protect the men in his unit, the 21stTacticalAir Support Squadron, even at great personal risk.Years later, I received a call from one of his fellow airmen who told me that John had saved his life.True to his nature, John had never mentioned it. His humility was as exceptional as his courage. Citations, theAir Force Outstanding UnitAward with a “V” device for valor, and the Republic of Vietnam Gallantry Cross with Palm. In 2008, following his untimely passing, John was posthumously inducted into theVietnam Veterans Memorial in Holmdel, New Jersey, where a poignant photograph of him from his time in Vietnam remains on permanent display. The contributions of our former servicemen and women are immeasurable. Debts that can never be repaid. We may not all agree on our nation’s policies, however, after having the privilege of working alongside veterans for more than two decades, I graciously request we unite on this: the kindness, compassion, and dignity they have so rightly earned. On any given night, there are approximately 40,000 homelessVeterans sleeping on the streets in the U.S. Proceeds from fundraising will be used to supply permanent housing for our homeless Veterans at no cost to them. Kindly join us in honoring those who served to protect our great nation and our freedoms. Our Veterans should never have to sleep on the streets or go hungry. Please consider joining us! It describes the dedication of our farmers-then and now. FFA stands for Future Farmers of America (not to be confused with the FAA or Federal Aviation Administration, which regulates our hot air balloons). This youth group is molding not just our future farmers but future leaders through agriculture education in our local high schools. Check out how the local programs come together in the FFA building. Help with the 4-H and FFA fundraising efforts by supporting sales of plants, ice cream sandwiches and milk shakes, produce and activities. The Fair is a place where local farmers display antique tractors, animals, hay and more. Locals enjoy participating in the various tractor and truck pulls for spectator viewing. Other main arena events include Bullride Mania Rodeo, Demolition Derbies, and the Action Sports Show featuring BMX, FMX, and MC stunts showcasing some of the most skilled riders in the world! Many also display canning, handwork, arts and crafts. The Hot Air Balloon Festival has been a favorite addition since 2001. Watch balloon launches, take a tethered ride or full flight and appreciate the beauty of Warren County’s stunning farmland from the air. Access to view the balloons is included in the low Fair admission price: $10 for adults, $5 for children ages 6-12, and free parking, making it one of the most affordable events around. The Traditional Arts Expo and Quilt Display will have a red, white and blue theme. Celebrate this iconic American folk-art tradition in the Expo building where over one hundred quilts will be on display.
