Family & Divorce Law You know you should be in the gym but you have no idea what to do. You’ve probably thought at least one of the following at some point: • “Is my form good enough to perform certain exercises? Will I look stupid? Are people watching?” • “How much weight should I use?” • “Should I even use weight?” • “How difficult is this supposed to be?” • “Should I do circuits?” • “How many times should I repeat the exercise?” • “Which muscles do these exercises work? Should I even be working these muscles?” • “Should I even be lifting weights if I just want to get lean and toned?” • “How the *&%^ do I set up this machine?” These stressful questions seem to be the reason most of us never attend a gym. However, we are bombarded with the above questions that cause enough stress to have us wish we were back in our comfort zone … on the couch watching television. Being intimidated in the gym is a real thing - so real that the combination word of “gymtimidated” was invented. You probably won’t enjoy coming to the gym until you feel confident. You probably won’t feel confident until you feel comfortable. Here are 6 steps to help take you from “Gymtimidated” to “Gympressive” 1. Ask for Help- Any trainer or gymowner should have no problem assisting you in your journey from having no clue to being competent. A lot of gyms offer complimentary sessions. If not, hiring a trainer for a session or two is a great investment in your future health. 2. Show Up- If you are currently not attending the gym at all, showing up just once a week is a huge step in the right direction. Work your way up to your desired weekly attendance slowly but you need to just start with what’s not overwhelming for now. 3. Perform Enjoyable Exercises- Most of us with minimal experience like to do what we have been told is most effective. The most important first step is to enjoy what you’re doing. Don’t stress yourself over things like how much cardio vs. lifting weights you should be doing. 4. Keep Workouts Short- Most of us try to make up for years of lost time in the gym in a few sessions. This drastic increase in activity of going from nothing to everything can have tons of negative effects and if the sessions are time-consuming it will be seen as a lengthy chore that inhibits your ability to get other things done that are also important. Get in and out in thirty minutes, over time we can increase this. 5. Simple Exercise Selection- Choose 4-6 total exercises that you want to perform. When starting off and trying to create a habit, do your best trying to stick to these. The exercise boredom bug shouldn’t hit you yet considering you’re just learning. Improving on these few exercises should be stimulating enough to keep you showing up at first. Pratt Performance Systems helps busy adults achieve amazing results through Small Group Personal Training, an expert coaching staff and a fun gym environment. prattperformance.com/ 6 Steps to Help Take you From “Gymtimidated” to “Gympressive” Being intimidated in the gym is a real thing - so real that the combination word of “gymtimidated” was invented. FRE EMAN, VMD, MS Several generations ago it was common to feed pets leftovers from the family dinner table as their sole diet. However, as our understanding of veterinary nutrition evolved, commercial pet foods were designed to provide a more complete, balanced, and consistent diet for our pets. It also became apparent that dogs, cats and humans all have very different nutritional needs. Dilated cardiomyopathy (DCM), a serious type of heart disease that leads to heart failure and death, was one of the first medical conditions caused by nutritional deficiency to be identified in dogs and cats. Taurine deficiency in pet food was discovered to be the cause as it was discovered that dogs and cats need significantly more taurine in their diets than humans. Recognition of this and other variations in species’ micronutrient requirements led to the development of the Association of American Feed Control Officials (AAFCO), who along with the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), ensure that commercial pet foods meet the minimum nutritional requirements for each species. For years following, diet-associated DCM cases were seen only in pets fed home-cooked or other non-mainstream commercial diets. Inmore recent years, consumers have a preference for pet foods that look more appetizing to people, as well as more natural and organic to avoid antibiotics and pesticide residues. They also prefer grain-free foods to avoid gluten intake for the treatment of allergies and as a means to avoid corn - a food that is known to be genetically modified. These consumer preferences have resulted in major changes to the pet food industry and huge growth in the sale of raw diets, smaller boutique brand pet foods, and grain-free diets. But cats and dogs are not small people and dietary tolerances differ. For instance, chocolate and grapes are toxic to dogs, but not to humans. And while food allergies are not uncommon in dogs and cats, the most common food allergens for them are not grains, but are actually the most common protein sources used in pet food – chicken and beef. In July 2018, the FDA published its first warning about diet-associated DCM in dogs after veterinarians were reporting a higher incidence of the disease in dogs fed boutique and grain-free diets. In June 2019, the FDA updated its warning and provided data about the number of reports, breeds affected, and the pet food brands most involved (this information is available online). This data reported that 90% of the diets fed to affected dogs were advertised as “grain-free” and 93% used peas and/ or lentils as the grain substitute. Research is still ongoing to better understand the mechanism behind the changes to the heart muscle that occurs with these diets, but it does not seem to be due to taurine deficiency. The good news is that these changes are reversible, particularly if the diet is changed before serious heart muscle remodeling and heart failure have occurred. Thus, the general consensus amongst most veterinarians is that diets containing peas, lentils, or other legumes as the major carbohydrate sources should be avoided. Concurrently, there are also many pet owners who prefer to home-cook meals for their pets. However, even for veterinary nutritionists, it can be difficult to properly balance homecooked diets to ensure all of the necessary vitamins, minerals, and micronutrients are included. Chicken and rice-based diets, although commonly recommended as easily digestible diets for short-term feeding in pets with stomach upset, are notoriously nutritionally deficient, especially in iron and calcium. Feeding a primarily AAFCO-approved commercial diet with a smaller portion of home-cooked ingredients and a pet multi-vitamin may be the compromise for pet owners who still wish to home cook for their pets. Veterinarians recognize that each pet has different dietary needs based on their age, activity level, and the presence of any concurrent medical conditions. As such, pet owners should consult with their veterinarian when deciding upon what diet is best for their pet. At KIND Veterinary Care Center, we are committed to providing exceptional and compassionate lifelong care for our patients. As a full-service veterinary hospital, we offer comprehensive and convenient medical, dental, and surgical services with a personal touch. Food For Thought: Choosing a Healthy Diet for Your Pet Dilated cardiomyopathy (DCM), a serious type of heart disease that leads to heart failure and death, was one of the first medical conditions caused by nutritional deficiency to be identified in dogs and cats. Taurine deficiency in pet food was discovered to be the cause as it was discovered that dogs and cats need significantly more taurine in their diets than humans. PETS’ HEALTH By Andrea S. We love their red blend made up of Petite Sirah, Carignaine, Barbera, Mouvedre and Zinfandel. This is no run of the mill red blend. On the nose, it opens with an explosion of dark fruits, cinnamon, rose petals and thyme. On the palate there are flavors of dark plum, blackberries and blueberries with a dense minerality, well integrated oak and balanced acidity. It's full of character, structure and great depth of flavor. A very impressive offering, way over delivering at this price point. Delicious standing alone or a great match with barbeque. Gregory Sutton is the owner (franchisee) of this location, but there are over 1,150 stores nationally. Sutton has an accounting and hospitality background and has been with the company since August 2020, as it took about two years for this location to come to fruition. “At our grand opening, there was a line outside of 100 people! The first 50 guests at 8 a.m. received free smoothies for a year (once a week), which created a lot of local buzz!” he proudly recalled. An exciting part of his day has been to look up and see loyal customers popping into the store, sometimes 3-4 times a week and becoming Tropical fanatics. Seeing their smiling faces as they try new items on the menu has been rewarding. “Repeat guests are good to us and we are building quite a following,” he said. theconnectionsnj.com HOME & DESIGN PAGE 26 Fair Street Interiors fairstreetinteriors.squarespace.com 908-334-1953 Design for Interiors & Home Modifications One of the biggest decisions clients face in renovating or remodeling is what to do with their floors. There are a lot of options today. Let’s take a look at some of the market’s most popular wood and wood-look alternatives Hardwood floors remain the gold standard in both desirability and price. Organic, timeless, classic and extremely long wearing, hardwood gives warmth and character and adds value to your home. Real wood is cured, planked, kiln dried and milled into interlocking planks of varying widths and lengths which must be professionally installed. Varieties are almost endless: cherry, walnut, teak, hickory and oak provide different grain patterns, textures and colors. Every floor is one of a kind. However, wood floors will scratch and are not waterproof. Wet spills must be wiped up promptly. Scratches can be minimized with felt furniture protectors. Over time, natural wood will compress and expand, which may cause creaking and even gaps. Hardwood floors can be sanded and restained, making this a highly sustainable flooring option. Properly maintained wood floors, swept clean and occasionally damp mopped with a specified cleaning product, can last well over 100 years. Luxury Vinyl Planks (LVP) is a very popular up and coming alternative. The product is made of PVC resins that are melted and combined with fungicides and stabilizers, then stamped with a high-res photographic film image which looks like stone or wood. It’s then heat pressed into strong, resilient sheets and cut into rectangular strips which interlock when installed without glue. Installation is simple and quick. Water resistant, durable and affordable, styles are endless, mimicking stone and woods beautifully. Easy to maintain, LVP requires only a good sweeping and occasional damp mopping. Be mindful that not all LVP is UV resistant~ some brands may fade in a sunny area and it lacks the texture of real wood options. Laminate flooring is attractive, easy to install and durable. Until LVP came along, laminate was hugely popular. This all man-made product consists of a stable fiberboard base with high definition imagery of stone or wood bonded on top, sealed with a transparent wear layer. It’s a heavier product than LVP, installed as a floating floor with interlocking edges. Over the years, graphics have improved considerably and laminate is usually now sold with 5-10 images on the planks in a carton, either in squares to mimic stone or in planks to look like wood. This means there is replication when the flooring is installed, not unlike LVP. Laminate floors typically resist scratching and provide a consistent look over large areas. These floors, however, cannot be refinished and without a high quality sound-absorbent underlay, they may sound hollow. Maintenance is as with other flooring~ sweep and damp mop. Spills must be wiped up promptly. Engineered hardwood is made by bonding a layer of real hardwood onto a substrate of high quality plywood and finishing it with a strong top wear layer. Installation is nailing and/ or gluing and must be done by a professional. It looks great~ what meets the eye is real wood, however, the engineered product can be as expensive as real hardwood. It can be sanded and refinished at least once, depending on the thickness of the upper layer. This product provides superior stability, texture and a huge variety of styles. Depending on the application, it can be a better solution than real hardwood. Be sure to work with your designer, architect, contractor or flooring professional to find the best solution for your home. Main St. Mendham, NJ 07945 Tri-County provides partial scholarships to children in northern NJ so they can attend safe, quality, values-based independent schools where they thrive. “I grew up in a small apartment in Paterson, NJ with my mother, who came to America from Peru when I was small. My mother wanted to give me the opportunity of a safe, quality education, but she knew that would not be possible in the Paterson Public Schools. If it had not been for Tri-County’s Scholarships, I would never have been able to receive the education and self confidence I developed at St. Gerard School and DePaul Catholic High School. I am currently on full scholarship at DeSales University where I have earned a 4.0 GPA, and plan to become a lawyer. I am grateful to Tri-County for helping me to become the person I am today.” —Jesus Delgado, Junior, DeSales University, past Tri-County Scholarship recipient Forty-one years ago, Tri-County Scholarship Fund (TCSF) was founded to improve the lives of New Jersey’s most financially vulnerable children by providing them access to the superior and safer option of values-based K-12th grade independent schools. “We believe that every child deserves access to a safe, quality education regardless of their family’s zip code or income level, “ says TCSF President, Prudence Pigott. “In many poverty stricken zip codes, the public schools are trying, but not able to deliver an environment that encourages success. There is little in the way of a positive peer group, of character development, or educational excellence. Our parents seek a better option for their children, and Tri-County makes this dream a reality by awarding partial scholarships to better, safer schools.” The majority of scholarship students come from inner-city, single parent homes with an average household income of $30,000. 85% of scholarship students are racial and ethnic minorities. With a 41year proven track record, Tri-County points to a winning formula of shared commitment: TCSF provides partial scholarships, the partner schools offer discounted tuition, and parents sacrifice to pay their share. All are invested in the students’ success. As a result, the students feel believed in and make the most out of the educational opportunity. “By awarding scholarships and educational opportunity, Tri-County breaks the cycle of generational poverty,” says Pigott. “Providing access to a quality education makes all the difference. 100% of our scholarship students graduate from high school. They go on to college, successful careers, and give back to their communities. With this education, their lives are no longer pre-determined by zip code, poverty, family situation or race.” TCSF measures its own success by the numbers of happy, grateful and thriving alumni who are positively impacting their families and their communities – over 35,000 students since 1981. Tri-County’s largest fundraiser, the 41st Annual Awards Dinner, will be held Tuesday, November 1st at the Parsippany Hilton. This year’s Awards Dinner, an in-person gala, promises to be an inspiring event bringing together over 600 supporters to help children receive the life-changing gift of a quality, safe, values-based education. This year’s prestigious honoree is Juan C. Andrade, President & Chief Executive Officer of Everest Re Group, LTD. If you would like to help Tri-County pay tribute to Mr.Andrade and support the scholarship children through the Annual Awards Dinner, please visit: tcsfund.org/2022gala Over Forty Years of Changing Lives Through Quality Education — Measuring Success by Student Outcomes Forty-one years ago, TriCounty Scholarship Fund (TCSF) was founded to improve the lives of New Jersey’s most financially vulnerable children by providing them access to the superior and safer option of valuesbased K-12th grade independent schools.
