He chose "Fine Arts Honors" as an elective this year to focus on art and balance academic stress by creating art, which he has loved doing since childhood as a hobby-turned-passion. He enjoys using any available mediums to create art, varying from acrylic and watercolors to charcoal sticks and digital art. Free time is usually occupied by new ideas, scrambles of original characters on notebook paper, and hastily written notes for a future "E.D.E.N." project that he hopes to release into the far future. Allan aims to continue his dream in college and push his art career to better heights, with a simple objective to make others around him seen or happy. He has taken steps to achieve this through obtaining two Scholastic Art Award "Silver Keys" and four Honorable Mentions, which would not be possible without years of support. He is very grateful for the opportunities that have shown up for him, and people and teachers who helped facilitate artistic growth. It’s hard to believe that summer is already coming to a close. It always seems to go by much too quickly, especially for me, since summer is my favorite time of year! While I’m never quite ready to say goodbye to the long, warm days, there is something special about the arrival of fall. The days grow shorter; the air becomes cooler, and the thing I look most forward to about the season is that first crisp scent of autumn in the air. Many believe this diagnosis means their knee is beyond help and replacement surgery is their only option. For the first time in their marriage or relationship, a man and woman may recognize that even if they are the same age, health or habits may have a huge impact on their lifestyle as a couple. Since I have experience with guiding the aging, friends have asked me to accompany them as they look at facilities for their loved one. It is such an emotional time for them that they recognize it may be difficult to honestly judge a facility. I am most anxious to support them, since another pair of eyes and ears can make a big difference when making this important decision. I always begin by explaining that for many, there is no magical age or stage when it is clear the move to a facility is indicated. For some, it will be as memory issues show themselves. Or there are mobility difficulties that make it impossible to experience life outside of the home. Or perhaps there is a degenerative disease that has reached a crisis point. It is also important for me to point out that there are stages for facilities and one size does not fit all. Independent living is a good choice for one with the ability to make their meals, be able to do their own shopping either by driving or on a transport, be responsible for their personal hygiene and their clothing and bedding, and interface with their medical team. The very name, independence, identifies that there is less provided by the facility beyond a place to live socially and communally. Assisted living is a great choice for one who is unable to handle some or all of those challenges. Meals provided with others, medical care on site, laundry service provided, someone to assist at any time of day or night, perhaps an aide, socialization and activities are all line items in assisted living facilities. The socialization is key for those in need of assistance, and since we eat with our eyes, attractive and healthy meals are extremely important. I stress this and recommend dining with the residents when making a decision, since not only the residents but their family, from time to time, will be dining. Nursing or sub-acute care relies upon skilled medical staff and is guided by medical necessity. Physical, occupational and speech therapy may be offered, and a program designed to meet the patient’s medical needs is created upon entry. Looking for a facility that is bright and cheery, with engaging and caring staff, may go a long way in offering confidence that the patient or family member will not fall into depression. These are life-altering decisions not only for the patient but their family, and change always has the potential to be difficult. This decision is one that is more so than almost any other. I encourage anyone facing this to reach out to family, friends, clergy, others who have had similar experiences, or medical professionals to gather information. Sit with the decision, visit and revisit if necessary, and recognize that at the end of the day, doing what is best for those we love at this time of life looks very different than any other, but done out of love, it is the right thing to do. In fall, when the traffic has died down, the sand has cooled, and the crowds have headed home, it is the perfect time to pack up your family and friends and head back down to the Shore to explore the historic lighthouses. A great way to plan your adventure is to participate in the annual Lighthouse Challenge, which is held on the third weekend of October each year. This year, the Challenge includes sites on the Atlantic Coast from Sandy Hook to Cape May and the Delaware Bay and River Coast from Cape May to Paulsboro. Eleven lighthouses, four light saving stations, and one museum participated. Although the sites are open to everyone, if you pay a small entry fee of orget about what the calendar says. Labor Day might have passed, but there are still miles of gorgeous shoreline that we have in New Jersey. Without the traffic or the crowds, fall is a great time to explore the historic lighthouses that pepper our coastline. They are open every day, but if you are up for a challenge, pack up the car and spend the weekend of October 17th and 18th as part of the annual Lighthouse Challenge. Summertime at the Jersey Shore is filled with lazy days on the sand, frolicking in the surf, boardwalk rides, games, and, of course, funnel cake. There is not much time to appreciate the tall structures that have illuminated and protected the beaches for $10 you can join the Challenge and collect a souvenir at each site you visit. If the idea of visiting historical sites seems daunting to you because you have young children, do not fret. The website has a page on “How to Do the Challenge with Kids and Survive” that was created by a mom and preschool teacher. It includes creative ideas like keeping a total number of steps at each lighthouse, then adding them up and competing to see who can come the closest at guessing the total. Another idea is to come up with fun questions to ask the volunteers, like how many bricks the lighthouse is made of or what some shipwreck stories are. (Kids love a good shipwreck story!) Of course, another idea that always works is having food in the trunk and opening it up for “trunk snacks” after each tour. Allowing the kids to snack between sites makes the time in the car go much more quickly! These and more ideas are included on the website below. They will keep your kids engaged, energized, and learning while, most importantly, having a fun family day, This year the Challenge is celebrating America 250 and honoring Sandy Hook Lighthouse, which was the only New Jersey Lighthouse standing during the Revolution. Each participant will be given a map of colonial NJ with pockets on the map where each site is located. You can collect a wooden coin at each site visited to complete your map. The lighthouses at Sea Girt, Barnegat, Barnegat Light, Navesink Twin Lights, and more are all participating in the Challenge, but they are open to the public and host tours and special events throughout the year. I enjoy it all year round, not just the cool months. Making different soups each week provides great variety. Each batch makes enough for 6-8 servings. Slow and long cooking, then overnight in the fridge for best flavor. Soup is always best the next day. Leftovers are apportioned into pint-size containers for freezing. Ten minutes in the microwave and provides a healthy, hearty, home-cooked meal. However, the microwave makes the bowl too hot to handle. So, rather than grab potholders, I use a soup bowl cozy. It’s amazing and fits the bowl perfectly! My favorite is crocheted in cotton yarn using single crochet. Here’s how to make one yourself.
