A blank page or canvas. His favorite. So many possibilities.” That is the last line in Stephen Sondheim’s celebrated musical “Sunday in the Park with George” about the impressionist artist Georges Seurat and it perfectly conveys the attitude Robert Alan “Bob” Waltsak has towards his art because for Mr. Waltsak it is not so much the finished picture that gives him satisfaction but the process of painting. Never one to dwell on a painting he has completed, it is that blank canvas, the next painting that excites him. Success for Waltsak is not measured by awards won or paintings sold, but whether he was able to, as he tells it, “achieve nature” in his painting, but nature is fleeting, the light changes, the mist dissipates, what does he see now? Mr. Waltsak grew up in Newark, NJ and at an early age gravitated to the arts, study- ing at the Newark School of Fine and Industrial Art, The School of Visual Arts in New York, and later at the Ridgewood Art Institute where he remains a popular fix- ture. Waltsak’s award-winning paintings are held in numerous private and corpo- rate collections and have been exhibited at the Hastings on Hudson Museum and at the Ridgewood Juried Art Show. He has been represented by galleries in New Jer- sey, New York, and Connecticut. While painting landscapes is Waltsak’s avocation, his vocation has been the fur- niture building business. Bob owns the Woodworker, a cabinet making company in Wayne, NJ where he is assisted by his son Josh. Some of Waltsak’s furniture work has made it to the Broadway stage in the productions of “Wicked” and “For- tune’s Fool.” But it is upstairs in his painting studio at the Woodworker where you will most likely find him these days with a blank canvas and his brushes and paint ready.
