This can include simply restoring the soft, luxurious feel of the leather, repair- ing any small tears and, if faded, adding color. Customers appreciate our leather restoration service because they wish to preserve their existing furniture, which was so well made, rather than invest in new furniture. The above pictures are the before and after of a pair of recently restored, 23-year old, nubuck leather chairs and ottomans. Nubuck leather is leather in which the exterior surface has been sand- ed to provide a textured, suede-like appearance. In this case, the ani- line, nubuck leather was severely faded from age and sun damage. As well, the leather had become stiff and uncomfortable from dehy- dration. The customer had recently repainted the room navy blue mak- ing the faded color much more noticeable. The products we use are the same products used by tanneries and are superior to off-the-shelf formulas. Our softeners, for example, do not contain silicone, which can actually hasten the deterioration process. Our dyes are individually mixed for each job and exactly color matched by a local artist. We thoroughly vacuumed and then cleaned the upholstery with a neu- tral pH, leather cleaner. After dry- ing, we applied several coats of sof- tener to replace the lost proteins and collagens, which had been lost over the years. This made the leather nice and supple and pre- pared it for taking color. We then re-dyed the leather in order to bring back the original color of the upholstery. The upholstery will now last many more years. It is restored yet its aged beauty has been preserved at a significant cost savings over new.
